WITH LATEST ENTRANT, PICKUP TRUCKS ARE GOING ELECTRIC A new electric pickup is coming from a Ohiobased manufacturer even as Tesla gears up to make its own. The advent of the Workhorse W-15 shows that while most people haven’t exactly embraced electric-powered vehicles — they make up less than 1% of overall vehicle sales — there remains a potentially strong market among service companies that operate fleets of pickups. Workhorse Group, a Loveland, Ohio, company that has been making medium-duty electric vans, says that with a range of 80 miles per charge, the W-15 will meet the needs of a wide range of companies, from electric utilities to plumbing contractors. And, in a likely key difference from the Tesla pickup on the horizon, the W-15 will have a backup, 3-cylinder gas motor to let it drive longer distances in a pinch. The W-15 will be built in Union City, Ind., with a pricetag of $52,500. The pitch to prospective buyers will that they can then save dramatically on maintenance and gas, effectively cutting the price of the trucks.
Workhorse Group said in March that it had received 2,150 “letters of intent” to buy the W-15 truck from major utilities and energy producers like Duke Energy, Portland General Electric, the Southern California Public Power Authority, Clean Fuels Ohio. It says it also has one from the city of Orlando, Fla. On Tuesday, Workhorse said it was entering into a 10-year “strategic partnership” with corporate vehicle provider Ryder System to become the distributor and service source for the truck. The trucks are likely to become part of Ryder’s rental fleet, says Scott Perry, chief technology and procurement officer for Ryder. “I think electric vehicles in general are gaining more and more recognition,” Perry said.”There is a lot more interest by fleets.”

According to the Automotive News Data Center, U.S. sales of compact sports cars are up 3.4 percent in 2017, while overall car demand is off 12 percent, including an 11 percent slump in April. Truck sales, including crossovers and SUVs, have increased 4.4 percent so far in 2017.
2017 MITSUBISHI LANCER ADDS LIMITED EDITION TRIM The 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer Limited Edition goes on sale later this month for $20,660. Slotting just above the base ES 2.0, the Limited Edition features black treatments to the 16-inch wheels, roof, upper front grille garnish, fender garnish, and door mirrors. A Limited Edition badge and a sunroof are also included. More interesting is the custom black-and-red interior. Inside the cabin, you’ll find sport seats and red stitching on the steering wheel, shift knob, brake lever, arm rest, and door trim. A black headliner, gloss black accents, and aluminum pedals complete the look. Under the hood sits a familiar 2.0-liter inlinefour-cylinder engine producing 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. A CVT is the only available gearbox on the Limited Edition trim. The Limited Edition Lancer will be available for the rest of the model year, and that’s it. Earlier this year, Mitsubishi confirmed it would discontinue the Lancer in August. The big winner among small sports cars this year is Mazda’s MX-5 Miata, which, after a redesign, got off to a slow start last year but is now showing signs of life in the showroom. A new model with a retractable hardtop was recently added. MX-5 Miata sales in April totaled 1,319, down from 1,345 sold in March, but up sharply from the 929 sold in January and 1,108 sold in February. Overall, MX-5 Miata deliveries are up 35 percent this year in the U.S. The MX-5 Miata’s sibling, the Fiat 124 Spider, is also selling in steady volume, albeit in small numbers. U.S. sales of the roadster started the year at 240 sold in January and grew to 465 in April. Even the BMW Z4, which went out of production in August, has seen U.S. sales rise 42 percent this year, though monthly volumes have been small. And sales of the Toyota 86, a successor to the Scion FR-S, are up slightly. In March, Chevrolet’s Camaro galloped past the Ford Mustang for its first monthly win of the year. Camaro outpaced the Mustang in April, 8,737 to 8,063, but Mustang, which is no longer offered with a V-6 model, still has a comfortable lead for the year. Ford’s pony car is nearly 6,500 units ahead of Camaro. Still, the midsize sports car segment -- Camaro, Mustang and the Dodge Challenger -- is off 16 percent this year heading into the key spring and summer sales season. TEXAS CAR DEALER LEVELED BY 140-PLUS MPH TORNADO A car dealership in Texas was swept away Saturday night during a tornado, reported an NBC affiliate in Dallas-Fort Worth. Interstate 20 Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Canton’s showroom and maintenance facility were flattened by the storm. Dozens of cars on the interstate were reportedly overturned. Owner Randall Noe told NBC DFW-Channel 5 that the dealership was evacuated by the general manager about five minutes before the tornado struck. “The crew here, the general manager, asked everybody to leave and go home because sky turned green, he said, they could start hearing the howling noise,” he said. “They did get out.” At least four tornadoes struck the surrounding counties, two of which exceeded winds of 140 mph, earning a “strong” tornado intensity rating, the National Weather Service said in a statement. Several National Weather Service survey teams were deployed Monday to further assess the damage. Robert Wardell, parts and service director at All-Star Ford-Canton, said his dealership sustained no damage while the Interstate 20 business -- just up the same street -- was, “wiped out completely.” Search and rescue from the tornado is almost complete, according to City Secretary Debra Johnson, and a station for volunteers has been established at a local fairground. “We’re just trying to make whatever recovery efforts we can, as soon as we can,” Johnson said.
