Nothing beats the sight and scent of a beautiful, fresh cut Christmas tree. If you are the old-fashioned, nostalgic type person who looks for every opportunity to create new memories for you and your family, then Christmas tree “hunting” holds a special place in your heart. Donning your warmest winter coats, hats and scarves, filling a thermos with piping hot cocoa topped off with some of those mini marshmallows and maybe a little flask of peppermint schnapps for dad and mom, off to the woods you go. Don’t forget the essentials. Your saw to cut down your fabulous tree and some rope to tie it down. Oh, and don’t forget to check if you need a forest product permit. In Oregon the minimum charge is $5 and you must have it in your possession while harvesting and transporting your tree. Go to www.fs.usda.gov for more information. One thing I’ve noticed about most of the trees I’ve seen which people have “hunted” and cut themselves, is that they all look a bit Charlie Brown Christmas Tree-ish - cute enough, but a bit sparse in regards to fullness. If you want a self-cut Christmas tree with a more groomed look but you don’t feel like getting frozen toes and venturing too far from home, we are fortunate enough to live in the great state of Oregon where there are ‘cut your own’ Christmas tree farms in every county across the state. Check out www.pickyourownchristmastree.org to find the farm nearest you. The biggest advantage of buying a Christmas tree from a u-cut tree farm is that it’s still in the ground. That means it will last longer than one that has been cut weeks ago and shipped to retailers. Make sure to check for dead or browning needles which that means that it is already past it’s prime. Gently stroke a branch on the tree and if the needles are pliable and stay on the tree. If they do, you are good to go. When you bring home your tree make sure that you keep it away from flames, like the fireplace or other heat sources. Direct heat makes the tree dry out quicker which also makes them a fire hazard. When you have mounted your tree make sure you check it’s water level and water it often, especially in the first few hours, as it is acclimating to it’s surroundings and not being in the ground. Never let the water level go below the base of the tree. If you don’t want to put even that much effort into getting your fresh tree, there are Christmas tree lots on every corner the week following Thanksgiving. You can pick exactly which type of tree you want, whether it’s a Fir, Spruce or Pine, they have you covered. Along with the

romance of fresh-cut, pretty trees that smell of Christmas’ past, comes the maintenance. Not only do you have to water your tree daily, but you have to check for sap leakage on a regular basis and naturally, deal with needle clean-up. Needle clean-up is a daily chore unless you want a huge pile to cleanup when you eventually move the tree. Finally, another consideration when choosing a real tree, disposing of it. Some communities offer tree pick-up as a service or if you have a green bin for biomass, that’s a good way to get rid of it. If you don’t have or want to use either of those options, you can always leave it in your garden until spring to chop up for garden mulch or add it to your compost pile. Last, there is the easiest option and most economical, in my opinion, the good ole’ fake tree! Up until three years ago, my family and I had the same Christmas tree that my husband’s father had used for over twenty years; we had it for fifteen more years. Yes, it held nostalgia. My husband would ceremoniously pull it out of its original box and put it together just as he and his father had on Christmas’ past. Did it smell like pine? No, but the sights and sounds and even smells were there from childhood on for him and from our past fifteen years together for me. In the pictures can you tell it’s fake? No. It still holds all of our memories, the ornaments we inherited from his father and the new ones we’ve collected together. And when we had to finally retire the old tree, we had to get a new one. If you choose to purchase a fake tree, initially it can cost anywhere from $50 up into the $100’s. But when you look at the whole picture, it’s a one-time cost that you won’t have to pay for another 20-25 years. There is no sap, no watering, no needles, no maintenance. You don’t have to worry about fire hazards and you can basically stay in the warmth of your home to get it out of wherever you store it. Just set it up and you are ready to start making memories….or remember the ones from past Christmas’. Whichever direction you make, your tree doesn’t have to make or break your Holiday Season. It’s an accent to what Christmas should be all about, spending time with your family.
