January seems to be such a let-down after the excitement of the dinners, Christmas parties and family fun of the holiday season. I know all I would like to do is sit on the couch and be lazy, but why not take advantage of the winter slow down and get your house organized? Here are some of my favorite ideas I’ve found on the internet that take just a little effort and not a lot of money.

1. Use shoe boxes as drawer dividers. This tip is especially helpful in your undergarment and sock drawers.

3. Use space bags to store all of your bulky winter gear, not only do you save space but it keeps out the musty smells and pests that may sneak in during storage.

1. Clean up your junk drawer. I use old body butter containers, and plastic yogurt containers to put all of those tiny things we save for later use like rubber bands and bag ties, and then label them with a marker. They are just shallow enough for drawers and you will be able to find everything easily without having to go searching. 2. For recycling make sure you have a much bigger container than what you will think you will need. Office supply stores sell specially marked containers or you can pick up plastic trash cans and mark them yourself. Make sure you have a specially designated space so it doesn’t become an eyesore.

2. If you have a large enough closet, get a three tiered kitchen basket and hang it from a hook from the ceiling. You can use it to store belts, socks, purses or anything small that needs to be wrangled.

4. Utilize the space under your bed. Use shallow boxes to store seasonal clothes, shoes or even extra blankets. Make sure you have a long bed skirt to hide the boxes.

Office & Hobby Rooms 1. Of course when you need an instruction manual they are nowhere to be found. Put them into a three-ring binder or accordion folder so you always know where they are. If you want to go an extra step, you can add label tabs to see what you need.

3. Organizing the refrigerator is always a pain. Use transparent containers and bags to help with ease of storage while keeping an eye on what needs to be used before expiring. It doesn’t hurt to label drawers and shelves so that everyone knows what goes where.

2. Store square shaped games side-facing like books, so that you don’t have to upend everything just to get to one game.

3. Partition desk drawers to keep them organized. For deeper drawers, I’ve used cups for pens and markers. For shallow drawers pencil boxes and old check boxes.

1. Trying to figure out what to do with all of the extra ribbon you have from gifts you’re received? A handy idea is to stack your sets of sheets and pillowcases and then tying a ribbon around them. You won’t ever have to go looking for that matching pillowcase again. 2. Get plastic bins at the dollar store or even find them at yard sales like I did and group your medicines by category, such as: First Aid, Colds, and Medicine for Children, or whatever you want. I’ve also done it in my drawers for hair products, make-up and dental. 3. Utilize the space above your toilet. Install a cabinet above your toilet and you can store toilet paper and other toiletries that you use often.

4. For mail - put out a box or basket to keep it in one place, but keep it out in the open so that it doesn’t get forgotten.

Living Room 1. Hang your magazines and/or blankets. Use an old wooden ladder that you’ve refinished, or head to a local antique store for one. Not only will it keep your unsightly piles neatly organized but it can be a tidy and artsy focal point in your living space. 2. I don’t know how it is in your house but first thing that happens when everyone walks through the door is shoes come off and coats get thrown on the couch or floor. Solution: a basket or plastic container for shoes, coat rack or hooks or pegs on an empty wall for stray coats and
