Whether you are just getting ready to plant flowers to beautify your home, to sell it, or cultivate the ground to plant fruits and vegetables for your family, right now is a perfect to get a little dirt under your nails.

Spring time is almost here! The earth starts waking up from its winters rest, we start seeing signs of spring with our bulbs poking through the earth, the beautiful melon color of the quinces start to show through and it’s time to start digging in the garden and prepping for our planting. Whether you are just getting ready to plant flowers to beautify your home, to sell it, or cultivate the ground to plant fruits and vegetables for your family, right now is a perfect to get a little dirt under your nails. If you didn’t dig out all the dead plants after the last production of tomatoes and jalapenos, first things first. You will need to pull out all of those dead plants and weeds. Fortunately the earth is so soft right now it’s a breeze and you can just pop those right into your green bin to

send to bio-mass. Now, you need to test your soil which will reveal its pH, phosphorus, lime, potassium, soluble salts, soil texture, and more. You can find a test at any garden store or even at Fred Meyer (that’s where I got mine). A very high or very low soil pH may result in plant nutrient deficiency or toxicity. Microbial activity is the best and plant roots absorb nutrients best when the pH is in the 5.5 to 7 range. Along with pH it’s really important to know your nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium levels. Why, you may ask? Well, Nitrogen promotes strong leaf and stem growth and dark green color, such as desired in broccoli, cabbage, greens and lettuce, and herbs. Add aged manure to the soil and apply alfalfa meal or fish or blood meal to increase available nitrogen. Phosphorus, promotes root and early plant growth,

including setting blossoms and developing fruit, and seed formation; it’s important for cucumbers, peppers, squash, tomatoes—any edible that develops after a flower has been pollinated. Add (fast-acting) bonemeal or (slow-release) rock phosphate to increase phosphorus. Potassium promotes plant root vigor and disease and stress resistance and enhances flavor; it’s vital for carrots, radishes, turnips, and onions and garlic. Add green sand, wood ashes, gypsum, or kelp to increase potassium. It improves structure, slowly releases nutrients, and increases beneficial microbial activity. So, add any amenders that you may need to balance your nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, then add what you need to increase your organic matter to get the proper soil pH. You do this by mulching with compost or shredded leaves, or by digging or tilling them into the top several inches of the soil.

To maintain healthy soil, make adding organic matter part of your yearly garden activities. Now, that your garden plot is ready for planting we can get our seeds started. There are some vegetables that can be directly planted into the ground in February. They are, snap peas, snow peas, shell peas, spinach, fava beans, early beets and early carrots. Then to get your seeds started, generally, the rule of thumb is to start your seeds 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost in your house or in a greenhouse.

Landscaping Ideas to Sell your Home! 1. If you have a lawn, clean it up. Of all of the landscaping ideas to sell your home, this is one of the most obvious. If you’ve been mowing regularly to a height of about two inches, you should have a nicely maintained lawn. 2. Clear and fix driveways, sidewalks and patios. Potential homebuyers notice things like dirty paving, moss-covered sidewalks, and cracked concrete. If needed, pressure-wash driveways, patios, and sidewalks before putting your home on the market. 3. Keep leaves and other debris picked up. Don’t force a potential homebuyer to walk over grass clippings, leaves, branches or pine cones. 4. Let color help you when selling a home. Colorful flowers generally create an attractive landscape, but yellow can be especially helpful as it may encourage a buying mood, so plant yellow flowers near the entryway. 5. Put lights on timers. You can’t be home all the time and you want your home to look warm and welcoming whenever prospective buyers drive past. Put indoor and outdoor lights on timers. Inspect the outdoor lighting around the door. Is there enough light to make it feel inviting and safe? If not, get the fixtures changed or have new ones added. 6. Prune deciduous shrubs and trees. In winter, while deciduous trees and shrubs are dormant and without leaves, is the best time to prune. Don’t let overgrown vegetation block the windows or path to the entrance. Cutting back shrubs and tree limbs will let the sun inside and showcase the exterior of your home. Be cautious, though, and don’t overdo it!

Another way is to plan on setting out sturdy seedlings in the garden when night temperatures stay in the mid-50 degree range both day and night and count back 6 to 8 weeks from then. Plant seeds for transplants in a homemade mix containing equal parts of sand, loam and peat moss, or purchase commercial potting or rooting mediums that are soil-less and sterile such as mixtures of perlite, vermiculite and organic materials. Fill the desired container with a lightly moistened soil mix. A four-inch flowerpot may be seeded with 18 to 20 seeds. Cover the seeds with onequarter inch of soil. Then label the pot and place it in a plastic bag. Tie the bag so moisture does not escape. No further watering is needed until the seedlings appear. Keep the germinating seeds at room temperature (68-75 degrees). As soon as plants emerge, remove the bag and expose the plants to maximum light. After germination, keep seedling pots at lower temperatures (55 degrees at night, 65-70 degrees during the day). Unless the soil mix was fertilized previously, weekly applications of a soluble plant food are When your seedlings get their first true leaves, it’s time to separate them. Carefully loosen the soil around the roots with a dull knife blade. Place each plant in a three-inch pot, or space six to eight plants in a larger plastic or pressed paper container.Uniform watering and fertilizing, and at least 12 hours of sunlight daily, will produce a stocky transplant with good production potential. About 10 days before transplanting to the garden, expose the plants to cooler temperatures and slightly less water. Leave the starts out all night the week before transplanting. Avoid frosty periods. Three days before transplanting, water your started plant well with a complete soluble fertilizer. When setting transplants in the garden, use plenty of water around the roots to be sure they have good contact with the soil.
