The idea of wine storage may evoke images of a vast cellar filled with dusty bottles of priceless vintage Bordeaux. But anyone with a few bottles on hand at home can benefit from learning about proper wine storage. The best place to store wine in your home isn’t necessarily a particular room, but rather wherever the storage conditions are optimal. Wine should be stored in an area that is cool, but not cold (45-65 degrees Fahrenheit); humid, but not too humid (50-80% humidity); and relatively dark. Temperatures above 70 degrees could cause the wine to “cook,” which affects its flavor and longevity. When wine is stored below 45 degrees or in too arid a location, the cork may become dry and allow air to enter the bottle. Too much humidity, on the other hand, can lead to mold, while too much sunlight can cause the wine to age too soon. These rules apply if you’re planning to store wine as briefly as a few days or as longterm as a year or two. Ideally all wine should be stored in a cool dark place and get no higher than 70 degrees, but if it gets a little warmer don’t worry, as long as you drink it within a few years of bottling, you are safe in keeping its integrity. Of course white wines are best when they are enjoyed nice and cold, but it can get too cold, and wines should not be stored in the refrigerator long term, maybe a couple of months at the most. Any serious collector worth his tannin will want to purchase a professional quality wine cooling system, which can cost upwards of $1,000. But what’s the solution for storing wine when it comes to the casual wine drinker? The easiest thing to do is just buy a wine cooler. Wine coolers should be set to 54-58 degrees if you are storing reds and whites in a single refrigerator, though there are dual wine coolers that can store wine at two different temperatures. in the bucket. If you are lucky enough to have a nice cool basement, it would be the perfect place for your wine. Just add a few wine racks and you are done. If you don’t have a basement, don’t worry, if a small closet can easily be turned into a mini wine cellar and you can make it as simple or as extravagant as you want, adding drawers for storing wine keys and other accessories and racks for your glasses. If you cannot justify converting the storage space into a wine cellar then tuck racks under the wasted space under your staircase, add a door as elaborate or simple as your decor allows for and you suddenly have a design focal point. An extra cupboard in your kitchen can work well too, as long as it’s not by an appliance. As for where to find bigger wine racks, there are many websites where you can buy simple racks in a variety of colors and materials for a reasonable price. The pros advise storing a wine bottle on its side so that the wine comes in contact with the cork, thus preventing the cork from drying out. Bottles with screw-top closures or plastic corks, as well as sparkling wines (which keep corks moist due to pressure inside the bottle) can be stored vertically, though horizontal storage is often more compact and practical. Wine storage racks are easy to come by at most home décor shops or wine stores. If you tend to

store more than a few bottles at a time, and have the space and funds to spare, consumer-grade wine coolers start at about $300. If this all just seems too much for you and you just want to scrap the idea of storing your own wine, there are always wine storage cellars like SOS Southern Oregon Wine Storage in Medford, Oregon.
