2012 TOYOTA YARIS These photos of the upcoming Toyota Yaris provide a direct comparison between the old one and the new one. The new one will be about four inches longer than the current one with the majority of that extra space between the front and rear axle making it roomier for the passengers.

COvER STORY

Written by Lyndon Conrad Bell

F

eaturing a gorgeous engine note, scintillating acceleration, finely balanced handling, all-conquering brakes, and steering so communicative you’ll think it’s been to counseling to learn to get in touch with its feelings, porsche’s panamera is definitely all that. Offered in a variety of mechanical configurations, porsche claims five (soon to be six) models. The panamera and the all-wheel driven panamera 4 use a 3.6-liter direct injected V6 that makes 300 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 295 ft-lbs of torque at 3750. panamera S and the aWD 4S use a 4.8-liter direct injected V8 that makes 400 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 369 ft-lbs of torque from 3500 to 5000 rpm. The aWD-only panamera Turbo adds a pair of turbochargers to the mix to squeeze out 500 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 516 ft-lbs from 2250 to 4500. porsche also has plans for a hybrid panamera. That car will use the 329-horsepower V6 and 46-horsepower electric motor from the Cayenne hybrid. The engines are mated to porsche’s remarkable semi-automatic, dual clutch, direct-shift gearbox, labeled pDK (porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe). a brilliant transmission, it gives the panamera an unusual feel at throttle tipin, as if something is a bit sluggish, but underway, it operates beautifully. anyone who’s ever had the pleasure of piloting any porsche car will feel right at home in the panamera. The key goes to the left of the steering wheel, while five instruments face the driver with the prominent one being the tachometer. The steering wheel is sized perfectly and provides just the right amount of heft to

10

control the actions of the highly capable sports car. panamera is exceptionally stable at high speeds and so responsive to inputs from the throttle, brakes and steering you’ll think it went through basic at parris Island. This is a car that follows orders— and executes them with deadly accuracy. It can honestly be said panamera is the culmination of everything porsche has learned about building cars over the last 61 years. Comfortable, powerful, agile, luxurious, and in all probability exclusive—based on its looks (panamera can be said to be a lot of things, but universally beautiful ain’t one of them)—porsche has entered the luxury sedan segment on its on terms and elevated it to an entirely new pinnacle. pricing starts at $75,875 for panamera, $80,775 for panamera 4, $90,775 for the S, $94,775 for the 4S and $133,575 for the Turbo. (all prices include $975 in destination charges.) Hybrid pricing has yet to be announced.

Art and Shirley Goldstrom along with their daughter Sheri, continue their decadeslong documentation of eras in American history. They collect and organize artifacts of pop culture, restore classic

automobiles, and honor the long tradition of the hot rod. The breadth of their work and their collections were on display for all to enjoy. All proceeds from the event went to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association of Southern Nevada. This was truly a great event for a great cause.

JYD PROJECT: Findlay PREP WELCOMES JYD

JYD PROJECT: THE STUDENT SUCCESS INITIATIVE

T

he 2011 school year will kick off with a rather tall student embarking upon 50 Clark County campuses to challenge students to step up and take the 50/50 Challenge. Targeting 50,000 caring adults willing to sacrifice five dollars from five paychecks to fund a 50-school/50,000student motivation tour; the 50/50 Challenge is hosted by the Williams brothers—Jerome and Johnnie—founders of the JYD Project. Even while political figures, school board members and parents

work to implement much-needed solutions, more than 122 students drop out of Nevada schools each day. Of those that remain, a solid 50 percent qualify for

and motivation, the Williams brothers have spoken to more than 1.3 million students collectively. The Williams brothers refuse to just sit back and lament the fact that Las Vegas is tabbed “the nation’s dumbest city”. To participate, simply donate $25 (or $5/per paycheck from five checks), as well as challenge five friends and five co-workers to do the same. The goal is to raise Nevada’s number 50 ranking among American states in both education and student graduation. For more information, visit JYDProject.com.

heck out Fergie leaning on her Hummer H2. Posed on chrome and black Asanti 24’s with a set of Pirellis. AS2 has no complaints on her choice of wheels— they are looking good. Nicely integrated, the monogrammed drop-down steps are definitely a necessity for the diminutive pop star to use to climb into her big Hummer. And while we applaud those touches, Hummers have had their play. We ain’t mad at you though Fergie. But we do have to ask; what’s next?

PERFORMANCE

T

he OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational was an invitation-only event that took place this year on Saturday, November 6 – right on the heels of the leading specialty automotive trade event, the SEMA Show. Held at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, the event was created to challenge the finest street machines in the world—in order to showcase the quality, performance and talent of the country’s top builders, performance parts manufacturers and car owners. The new Road Rally, sponsored by Detroit Speed & Engineering, Vintage Air and Pro-Touring.com, started with the close of the SEMA show floor on Friday, November 5. The route took finalists on a ‘Vegas-style’ rally ending at the location of the Invitational track. “This year’s event once again exceeded our expectations in terms of excitement, the

30

level of performance and design, and the involvement of the entire performance industry,” said Cam Douglass, director of Marketing and Product Development for OPTIMA Batteries. “From muscle cars, to hot rods, to imports and street trucks, we had the hottest cars in the world out on the track showing these vehicles really can do what they are built for.” The entire event, from the pre-SEMA builds to the awards ceremony, was shot for a national TV show, which will air in early 2011 on a national cable network. For more information visit http://www. optimainvitational.com/. Mark Stielow and his highly-modified and beautifully executed 1969 Camaro came out on top—winning the coveted title of OPTIMA Batteries Ultimate Street Car of 2010.

WORDS OF WISDOM

S

ometimes I get frustrated watching certain ministers and teachers of the Gospel. Many times there is too much hype attached to sermons. Emotions, commercialism, marketing strategies, and the like turn me off. Not to put anyone down, but sometimes we miss much in the body of Christ following selfish ministers focused only on money, prosperity, sales, and self promotion. In the process, the Gospel gets twisted. You see, in order for a person to sell himself, he must turn the Gospel into a feel good message. The consequences of sin won’t be preached, because that doesn’t prosper the preacher the way feel-good sermons do. The topics

that generate money are prosperity, breakthroughs, coming out, and going to the next level. Meanwhile, the truth of the matter is your breakthrough, your coming out, your prosperity, and your money will all be held up if you are not living right. The Bible holds the answer for every question we may face. The Word of God does not need our help. Many people read Christian books instead of the Bible, feeling there is a formula or pattern to follow—but there is not. Everything you will ever need is in the Word of God. Rather than trying to plug a hole in your life with feelgood sermons and daily guides to living, all you ever really need is to read the Word.
