COVER STORY
Family Man’s Sport Sedan Written by Lyndon Conrad Bell
T
he question that led to the development of the outgoing Dodge Charger model went something like this; “OK, so we’ve got this great platform we’ve inherited from Mercedes that’s doing well as the Chrysler 300. We’re thinking it’d be good for Dodge to have a large car too. What can you come up with?” Problem was, the people working on the car only knew they were working on a large sedan for Dodge. They didn’t know it was going to be called a Charger. That decision came after the car was done and
10
the resulting car looked nothing like a Charger at all. This time though, they knew they were doing a Charger—and it shows! The new design bristles with heritage cues from the iconic Chargers produced between 1968 and 1970, both outside and inside the car. Yet, the 2011 Charger also projects a fresh, contemporary appearance. The new
Charger’s interior is also miles ahead of the one it replaces. Still businesslike in every respect, the extreme austerity of the previous edition has been unapologetically left behind. Two engines are available at launch, a 292-horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, and the 370-horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI V8. Both engines are smooth, tractable,

and provide more than adequate power. We drove the V6 up the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco and found it to be well mated to its six-speed automatic transmission, though manual shifts could respond with a bit more alacrity. We sampled the V8 as well and found everything we liked about it before to still be true. Its mellow burble, exceptional thrust and
abundant torque all combine to fulfill the promise of the Charger’s new exterior styling. In other words, the 5.7-liter Charger is fast. With the 5.7, Dodge claims a six second 60. And it handles too. We kept pushing the Dodge deeper and deeper into curves in an effort to get it unsettled. Eventually, of course we did, but only when we got into a corner way too deep—with way late braking. The
Charger then succumbed to a mild plow, but nothing we couldn’t immediately correct. Chassis folks—job well done. The Charger feels like a car half its size, displaying the agility and adhesion we’ve come to expect from the finest sports sedans. Dodge reps proudly proclaim the 2011 Charger is a car an enthusiast can be proud of, that does family duty too. We’ve heard this before; sometimes it works— sometimes it doesn’t. In this case, it does. And, after experiencing the new 392 engine Dodge has dropped into the Challenger for its SRT8 applications, we’re waiting with baited breath for a chance to dance with a Charger 392. (Ya gotta know it’s coming…) 2011 Dodge Charger pricing starts at $25,995 (including destination).

Rose has also made cameos in music videos such as Ludacris’ “What Them Girls Like”, Young Jeezy’s “Vacation”, Mary Mary’s “God in Me”, and Nicki Minaj’s “Massive Attack”. Most recently, in 2010, she appeared in Russell Simmons’ reality show about his two assistants, Running Russell Simmons. All this activity generated significant rewards, among them, a beautiful 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo, dressed in Brilliant Black over Nero Perseus (that’s black on black y’all…). The interior features Alcantara inserts, Piano black wood trim, and a suede steering wheel. We think this car matches Amber perfectly, though it does beg the question whether she or the Lambo has the most vivacious curves. by Jerome Williams

rop dead gorgeous is far from a typical selling point when it comes to hybrids and plug-in electric cars. However, that may be about to change. Many automakers showcased cars with green technology, but several rolled out unabashed sports cars that touted sassy looks and heart-stopping performance. These sleek and sexy green vehicles made the biggest splash at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell Concept Mercedes-Benz unveiled the SLS AMG E-Cell prototype, a bad-boy supercar painted acid yellow with gullwing doors and four electric motors. For the production model, Mercedes expects to install a lithium-ion battery pack with a range of about 130 miles. Base price is expected to be $250,000. When the car becomes available in 2013, it will feature the equivalent of 526 horsepower, a top speed of 155mph, and a four-second 60.
14
Porsche 918 RSR Concept Heads also turned toward the Porsche 918 RSR, a lowslung hybrid racing car with two electric motors and an electric flywheel that captures energy during braking. Porsche announced plans to build a street version of the 918 earlier this year. Li-ion Inizio Concept “We’re all working together to create a paradigm shift,” says Steve Goldberg, media relations director at Li-ion. “And that not easy to do.” Newcomer Li-ion’s electric Inizio is a sexy roadster, reminiscent of a Lamborghini. Capable of speeds up to170 mph and a 3.4-second 60, its battery pack is good for a range of 150 miles. Yours for a cool $139,000 it’s not exactly an economy car, but that’s not the point. he 2011 Consumer Electronics Show will be remembered as the year mobile took over. no one was talking about who had the biggest HDTv, it was all about tablets that could do no wrong and super-phones so powerful they can double as laptops. To make this possible, AmD and Intel’s new platforms combine the CPU and graphics card on a single chip. Our Ten Best of CES Award Winners represent the most innovative products among dozens we saw at the show, from dual-core handsets and 3D camcorders, to Android for your car.
#1: RIM’s Seven-Inch BlackBerry PlayBook
This tablet is one of the most anticipated devices of 2011, having won the JYD vote before anyone even had a chance to play with one. Today, RIM announced the Wi-Fi only version of the slate will start selling this spring at an undisclosed price RIM says will be “competitive” with other devices. No word yet on which retailers or carriers will sell the Wi-Fi only PlayBook. What is clear though is the company has really focused on multi-tasking. Unlike Android, the BlackBerry Tablet OS has task-closing built in.

Jyd PROJECT: CElEBRITy gARAgE: lEBROn “KIng” JAMES
Lebron James just picked up a new car to add to his fleet of cars in Miami. This time he picked up an all white 2010 Camaro SS. The car is completely white except for the gloss black emblem, the tinted windows, and a thin black pinstripe racing stripes. I like the idea of going all white on a Camaro, I have never seen it done before. The all white multi spoke wheels also look good on this car. I love the staggered lips on the wheels. The only thing I would have changed would be to add either a flat back or solid color in the racing stripe outlines. I think it would give this smooth ride an even bigger bark!!! All in all, the “King” definitely has good taste in his cars and this is no exception.

You’ll enter through the hotel’s flower-filled conservatory and drink in the natural stone floor, wood-paneled ceiling and rusticity of the place. Chef Michael Mina’s creations are stunning -- an exquisite caviar parfait, tempura prawns with a light truffle cream, sea bass marinated in Japanese miso, a rich lobster pot pie that turns the tables on traditional Yankee frugality. WORDS OF WISDOM
There is no difficulty that enough love will not conquer, no disease that enough love will not heal, no door that enough love will not bridge, no wall that enough love will not throw down, no sin that enough love will not redeem. It makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble, how hopeless the outlook, how muddled the tangle, how great the mistake. A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all. If only you could love enough, you could be the happiest and most powerful being in the world.
~ Emmet Fox
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
