Hyundai Introduces Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept Hyundai revealed its innovative Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept. This fresh concept reflects a completely new interpretation of truck utility for the Millennial generation who now represents the second-largest population of car buyers. Modern urbanization is underway around the world, and the trend is strongly felt by young adults who face tighter parking on streets and parking garages, and increasing congestion overall. With their active social and community life, these “Urban Adventurers” bring a pioneering spirit to make their neighborhoods a better place to live and work. They need a vehicle versatile enough to accommodate both passengers and gear, while being efficient enough to fit into their unique urban lifestyle. Santa Cruz doesn’t focus on all the same attributes as traditional pickups. It was designed to meet these Urban Adventurers’ desire for expression, efficiency, and manoeuvrability. Hyundai designers created a unique, bold design that conveys their lifestyle, with a cascading, fan-like front grille, an aggressive side-profile rake, oversized wheels with center-locking hubs, and highly-contoured cargo bed forms. The wheel arches, roof, and bed rails offer convenient tie-down cleats for securing cargo of all shapes and sizes. For ease of access to the rear seats, the concept features convenient, rear-hinged rear doors which integrate seamlessly with the front door design. Efficiency is a key attribute of its advanced powertrain, with a 2.0-litre Turbo Diesel powertrain delivering 190 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, while achieving fuel economy of 7.8 L/100 km. Santa Cruz also offers Hyundai’s

HTRAC all-wheel drive system for all-conditions confidence. The concept is purposefully compact, making it ideal for navigating the urban jungle or a tight parking spot that most pickup drivers often have to pass by. Santa Cruz not only offers typical CUV driving character, its versatile cargo bed also provides separated storage for all the bulky or dirty gear the day’s activities require. During the work week, gear stays securely locked in the back, under an integrated, rigid tonneau cover that conveniently retracts out of the way when not needed. The modern lifestyle of the Urban Adventurers might sometimes call for even more cargo room. To answer that need, Santa Cruz offers an innovative tailgate extension. When fully extended, Santa Cruz’s bed length is comparable to a mid-size pickup, providing the ability to carry much more than its compact footprint would suggest. Santa Cruz was not designed as an alternative to a truck, so towing, payload and ground clearance were not primary goals. Rather, it’s intended to attract CUV and sedan buyers who are seeking greater utility, without the compromises that traditional trucks often require. With the pickup truck share of the industry down over five percent in the last 10 years, there is a need for a vehicle that more closely matches these morphing lifestyles of young adults. Santa Cruz is for the growing population who sees and pursues the world differently, those who want all the traditional attributes of a small CUV, but need the day-to-day versatility of an open bed. It’s the crossover truck that meets the unspoken needs of Urban Adventurers.

ICBC invests $130 million to make B.C. roads safer

his year marks the 25th anniversary of ICBC’s road improvement program. Since 1990, ICBC has invested approximately $130 million in more than 5,000 road improvement projects and safety studies across B.C.

“By investing in our transportation infrastructure, we can significantly reduce the incidence of severe crashes, ensuring drivers, pedestrians and cyclists can travel safely and efficiently.”

Over the years, the road improvement program has evolved significantly. Successful partnerships, community investments and the use of innovative technology and tools have led to award winning projects and contributions that have helped advance the knowledge of the road safety engineering industry across Canada.

In 2014, ICBC invested approximately $3.8 million in the Lower Mainland and $7.7 million in projects and safety audits across the province.

In 2014 alone, ICBC invested $7.7 million in over 400 projects and studies – 122 of which focused on pedestrian safety improvements. ICBC invests $1.195 million to improve Surrey, Delta & White Rock roads You may have noticed the new pedestrian signals, crosswalks and protected left turn signals in the community. These are some of the 59 road improvement projects ICBC invested approximately $1.195 million in last year to make Surrey, Delta and White Rock roads safer for everyone. This year marks the 25th anniversary of ICBC’s road improvement program with over $130 million invested in B.C. roads since 1990. Over the years, the road improvement program has evolved significantly. Successful partnerships, community investments and the use of innovative technology and tools have led to award winning projects and contributions that have helped advance the knowledge of the road safety engineering industry across Canada. “Through the road improvement program, ICBC has been improving Metro Vancouver streets for more than 20 years,” said Stephanie Cadieux, MLA for Surrey Cloverdale.

“Safe roads keep people and industry moving,” said Gordon Hogg, MLA for SurreyWhite Rock. “I am happy that the ICBC road improvement program is working to ensure safety on the roads in our region.”

“Sharing the road is a responsibility for everyone,” said Scott Hamilton, MLA for DeltaNorth. “ICBC’s road improvement program delivers solid results, improving road safety for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers.” “We’re proud of the thousands of road improvements and studies we have contributed to communities across B.C. over the last 25 years,” said Lindsay Matthews, ICBC’s director responsible for road safety. “Safer roads mean fewer crashes which also translates into lower claims costs. We’ll continue to invest in road safety initiatives that help us keep rates as low as possible for customers.” ICBC also works with communities to make sure road safety issues are considered in the planning of roadways and managing traffic and participates in engineering safety studies. All proposed road improvement projects are assessed based on their ability to make roads safer. The most recent evaluation of the program found that over a two year time period, overall, for every dollar invested, ICBC and its customers see a return of five times the investment. If you have a suggestion for making a road or intersection safer in your community, contact your local municipality or make your suggestion through icbc.com.

Wise up and Drive carefully! Say No to Distracted Driving Police targeting distracted drivers in March

T

he B.C. government, ICBC and police have launched a month-long distracted driving campaign. While most B.C. drivers are leaving their phones alone, some still aren’t getting the message.

The authorities say, distracted driving is the second leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C. with an average of 88 people killed each year. That’s why police across the province are cracking down on distracted drivers in March. Community policing Cell Watch volunteers will be roadside reminding drivers to leave their phones alone and ICBC road safety coordinators will be visiting community events with a driving simulator that the public can try. Customers can pick up a

decal to display on their vehicle at ICBC driver licensing offices and participating Autoplan broker offices to take a stand against distracted driving and encourage others on the road to do the same. The campaign also includes television and radio advertising as well as social media. Many studies have shown that distracted driving is still a major problems due to the proliferation of personal devices such as cellphones, tablet computer and portable MP3players. In-car use of which, increased drivers chances of getting into a crash when engaging in visual-manual subtasks (such as

reaching for a phone, dialing and texting) associated with the use of hand-held phones and other portable devices . Recently released results from a new Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) naturalistic driving study continue to show that distracted driving is a tangible threat in the following ways: • Text messaging, browsing and dialing resulted in the longest duration of drivers taking their eyes off the road.

AUTO TRENDS WEEKLY • Text messaging increased the risk of a crash or near-crash by two times and resulted in drivers taking their eyes off the road for an average of 23 seconds total. • Activities performed when completing a phone call (reaching for a phone, looking up a contact and dialing the number) increased crash risk by three times. There is no direct increased crash risk from the specific act of talking on a cell phone. However, visual-manual tasks (locating the phone, looking at the phone and touching the phone) are always involved when using a hand-held cell phone. This makes the overall use of a hand-held cell phone riskier when driving. Even portable hands-free and vehicle-integrated hands-free cell phone use involved visual-manual tasks at least half of the time, which is associated with a greater crash risk. In B.C. Suzanne Anton, Attorney General and Minister of Justice said, “Distracted driving is a significant concern for B.C. road safety – and one to be considered as seriously as impaired driving or excessive speeding. Last year, government added three penalty points to the $167 fine for talking on an electronic device, and as we monitor the impact of this action, may consider further sanctions to combat this dangerous driving behavior. I encourage British Columbians to talk with family,

clists.”

Scott Hamilton, MLA for Delta North on behalf of Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure “When you’re distracted behind the wheel, you react slower, and you run the risk of not seeing something incredibly important, such as a child darting out onto the roadway unexpectedly,” said Scott Hamilton, MLA for Delta North. “In fact, you’re four times more likely to crash if you’re using your phone while driving. Leave your phone alone when you’re on the road, pay attention to your surroundings and watch out for pedestrians and cy-

Chief Officer Neil Dubord, Transit Police and Chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee said, “We’ve seen first-hand the tragic consequences of driving distracted of all types, that’s why police will be cracking down on drivers who are putting themselves and others at risk.” Lindsay Matthews, ICBC’s director responsible for road safety said, “Distracted driving is a growing concern and causes most rear-end crashes in B.C. that result in injuries.” She added, “Some drivers still aren’t getting the message – every call, text or tweet can wait. Safer roads and fewer crashes will also help reduce claims costs and insurance rates.” Mark Ordeman, WorkSafeBC’s industry manager responsible for transportation and road safety said, “Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of worker deaths in British Columbia, with distracted driving playing a role in so many police reported crashes, we know this danger exists for all drivers, including those who are driving for work. That is why WorkSafeBC is reminding employers that they need to have a distracted driving policy and provide their workers the support they need to follow the policy. When you’re behind the wheel, driving is your only job.”

Regional statistics*: •

Every year, on average, 30 people are killed in distracted driving-related crashes in the Lower Mainland.

Every year, on average, 12 people are killed in distracted driving-related crashes on Vancouver Island.

Every year, on average, 32 people are killed in distracted driving-related crashes in the Southern Interior.

Every year, on average, 15 people are killed in distracted driving-related crashes in the North Central region.

Kia Racing in 2015 Pirelli World Challenge Season

“2015 marks our fourth season competing in the Pirelli World Challenge. In that time, the series has grown dramatically and so, too, has the level of competition, so the team has their work cut out for them in defending the Manufacturer Championship,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of sales and marketing, Kia Motors America (KMA). “But Kia entered motorsports to showcase the quality, reliability and performance of our cars, and we’ve never shied away from a challenge. The team has worked tirelessly over the winter to maximize the Optima platform, and we look forward to an exciting season.” The Kia Optima is the only front-wheel-drive car in the GTS class, and that presents its own set of challenges to the team and drivers during each grueling 50-minute sprint race. Heading into the opening weekend at COTA, the team is confident they have found a good balance that is both more consistent on tire wear and easier for the driver to manage.

2015 Acura TLX - Redesigned Sports Sedan is all about technology and performance

- By Veeno Dewan

hooked up to a nine-speed automatic and is available with either P-AWS or Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). The base, well-equipped, four- cylinder TLX starts at a very surprising $34,990. The V6 with standard Tech package is priced at $41,690, while the V6 SH-AWD starts at $39,990. The 2015 Acura TLX V6 we tested had a very high tech looking interior with sumptuous black leather seats, wood trim detailing on the doors and center console and metal trim bits and pieces. The interior has gone very high tech with the gear shifter now replaced by center console mounted switches for the gears and parking brake. Most of the car’s interior functions are now operated by a central touch screen display system that I found easier and more logical to use than most of the Acura’s competitors.

T

he all-new 2015 TLX was designed to deliver a unique and compelling blend of sports-sedan athleticism and premium luxury refinement. With a new redesign inside and out and more technology and driver aids- the new TLX has firmly set its sight on the BMW,AUDI, Cadillac, Infiniti, Lexus and Mercedes competition in its crosshairs.

The base front-wheel-drive model, has revised 206-horsepower 2.4-litre 16-valve, four-cylinder engine under its hood, connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with torque converter. For handling ability, it comes with the latest iteration of Acura’s Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS). Meanwhile the TLX V6 offers a 290-hp 3.5L 24-valve V6 engines

Opt for the Elite package and you gain amazing technology that provides all the comfort, convenience and occupant safety you could imagine such as in a suite of technology known as “Acura Watch”, comprising of BSI (blind spot information), FCW (forward collision warning), LDW (lane departure warning), LKAS (lane keeping assist system), RDM (road departure mitigation), ACC with LSF (adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow) and CMBS (collision mitigation braking system). Mitsubishi’s new 2015 lineup – Plug in Electric Outlander coming soon!

W

hen the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV arrives in Canada next year it will look (and drive) quite differently from the European model. Mitsubishi Motors expects Outlander PHEV will set the new standard for four-wheel-drive compact sport utility plug-in hybrids in Canada. For now, the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander compact sport utility, with its subtle styling update for a more daring execution up front, features a new, all-black front fascia and bumper produce a fresh, integrated look, complemented by restyled, silver skid plates and all-black mouldings that arch around the

Mitsubishi’s decision to offer two powertrains for RVR was born from the engineering team’s desire to strike a balance of fuel efficiency and power – as well as offering a broader choice to consumers. On highway driving, for instance, Mitsubishi RVR 2.0-litre 2WD achieves 7.3 L/100 km. For 2015, the Mitsubishi RVR has been named an IIHS Top Safety Pick for the fourth consecutive year.

and power rear windows. A hatchback with a functional, well-appointed, five-passenger interior, Mirage achieves leading fuel efficiency (5.3 L/100 km on the highway for CVT models) by way of its 1.2-litre, all-aluminum, and in-line three-cylinder engine. A sculpted, smooth aerodynamic hatchback design contributes to an impressive .28 coefficient of drag.

Mitsubishi Motors Mirage, the company’s newest model and one of Canada’s lowest priced subcompacts brings the starting MSRP of a new, 2015 Mirage ES to $9,998.

Meanwhile, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV The world’s first massproduced, all-electric car, Mitsubishi i-MiEV continues as a 2014 model with a new, lower price. Available in ES designation, i-MiEV carries a new, reduced MSRP of $27,998. New model year i-MiEVs will be arriving in March.

wheel well. Available with 2.4-litre, four-cylinder, or 3.0-litre V-6 MIVEC engines (six-cylinder power a rarity among compact SUVs in Canada), the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander offers Super All-Wheel Control – Mitsubishi’s sophisticated AWC system with added torque vectoring capabilities – essentially managing under/over steer and superior traction by providing torque to the front wheels on a left-to-right basis in addition to AWC’s front-to-back. The venerable Lancer SE AWC Limited Edition, featuring the 168-horsepower, 16-valve, 2.4-litre DOHC MIVEC engine, Lancer SE AWC Limited Edition is Canada’s lowest-priced compact sedan with driver-selectable 4WD. For 2015, the Mitsubishi Lancer has been named an IIHS Top Safety Pick for the seventh consecutive year. Meanwhile the top-of-the-line Mitsubishi RVR price lines (GT and SE Limited Edition) will feature a larger four-cylinder engine with 2.4 litres of displacement; the current 2.0-litre engine will continue with RVR ES, SE 2WD and 4WD price lines. The 2.4-litre, 16-valve DOHC, 168-hp, aluminum four-cylinder MIVEC engine is the same power plant available in Mitsubishi Lancer AWC models and arrives in RVR GT and SE Limited Edition as part of a mid-year model enhancement.

For 2015, Mirage is available with the “Plus Package” on ES price lines – inclusive of air conditioning, keyless entry, Bluetooth hands-free capability with voice control

Mercedes-Benz Metris mid-size commercial van makes its debut - Arriving in Canada later this year

T

he Canadian division of Mercedes-Benz Vans recently made its official debut of the Mercedes-Benz Metris at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis the Metris, which will be available in Canada starting in October 2015, is the Canadian and American sibling of the Vito, which will remain the mid-size commercial van name for all other global markets. The Metris is a right-sized vehicle with a unique combination of full-size van cargo capacity and payload but with the dimensions designed to thrive in urban environments. The Mercedes-Benz Metris is already strongly positioned as it offers up to 67% more payload and over 40% more cargo volume than other mid-size commercial vans currently available in Canada. The cargo van’s Canadian MSRP starts at $33,900 while the passenger van’s starts at $37,900. The Mercedes-Benz Metris promises to easily fit into underground parking garages in urban areas, and can also meet the needs of those who work out of their homes and have a need to garage the van. It also shares many of the functional and efficient characteristics of the Sprinter.

At the time of its scheduled launch in October 2015, all Mercedes-Benz dealers will sell and service the Metris. This new innovative mid-size commercial van will be available with a powerful 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine with 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, mated to a refined, efficient, and robust 7-speed automatic transmission with rear-wheel drive. This powertrain application, with optional ECO start/ stop, was developed specifically for the Canadian and American markets to meet the needs of the mid-size commercial van segment, and will come with a service interval of up to 25,000 kilometres. Safety features are a given for any Mercedes-Benz vehicle, and the Metris will feature 6 airbags for the cargo variant and 8 airbags for the passenger variant. All models will feature standard ATTENTION ASSIST, Crosswind Assist, and load-adaptive ESP. Optional safety features will include Active Parking Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, PARKTRONIC, Collision Prevention Assist, Blind Spot Assist, and a rear view camera. Many of the car-like interior features include premium touches and overall fit and finish. Large cupholders have also been added to the centre console to meet North American customer needs on long-hauls or local driving. To put the promising future of the Metris into context, the Canadian sales of the full-size Mercedes-Benz Sprinter continue to be brisk. In 2014 alone, a total of 4,077 Sprinters were sold for an increase of 19.1%. Model year 2014 brought a complete redesign, the addition of a 4-cylinder BlueTEC clean diesel powertrain to complement the existing V6, and safety and infotainment upgrades. The 4-cylinder BlueTEC now proudly upholds the SULEV designation. This is a first for a diesel engine worldwide and underlines the brand’s Green Leadership. Model year 2015 is even more exciting for the Sprinter with the addition of Crosswind Assist as a standard feature on all 2500 models not to mention the increased service intervals of up to 30,000 kilometres. The Sprinter 4x4, the latest addition to the Sprinter product line up, and the only 4x4 commercial van in Canada, has arrived and now provides the security of four wheel drive when the job calls for difficult driving conditions.

2015 BMW 435i Gran Coupé Two door styling - five door versatility paint and speed limit info. Our version of the 435i Gran Coupé tested was also equipped with the M Performance Package; ($1,900) an optional offering with upgraded M sport brakes, adaptive M suspension, variable sport steering and light 19 inch alloy double spoke wheels. Interior wise, the Gran Coupé has the no- nonsense, slightly stark, fastidious neatness of the other BMW 3 and 4 Series cars. There is a driver focused dash and the fat, sporty three-spoke, steering wheel with the paddle shifters mounted behind the wheel. Instruments are neat, clear and legible whist the major controls and buttons are all ergonomically placed for good hand placement and within easy eye line. BMW’s driver-oriented centre stack console features a bright screen for the major climate and entertainment function and works great with well-sorted BMW Drive rotary controller that has been steadily refined over the years to a point where it is easy and delightful to use. Seats, trims, doors panels and all interior surfaces are

composed of high grade, well-made finished material and provide excellent cabin ambience and driver/ passenger comfort. Well it is a BMW after all! The Coupé wide opening rear hatch also adds some extra versatility as trunk volume is 480 litres with the 40/20/40-split rear seat up, With the seat backs folded down, cargo capacity increases to a very usable 1,300 litres. The Smart Open function, included as part of the Premium Package, automatically opens and closes the tailgate via foot movement underneath the rear bumper if the drivers or occupants arms are full. On the road, the BMW 435i Gran Coupé is as entertaining and quick as you would think it would be. The automatic transmission is smooth fast and well matched to the refined thoroughbred six cylinder engines. The all-wheel drive system is flexible and well integrated distributing 60 per cent of engine torque to the rear wheels in high-traction conditions, and automatically apportioning torque forward when the road and driving conditions change. With the M

Performance parts fitted, the BMW certainly has an increase in performance with big, string brakes and a well-damped suspension. The Gran Coupé certainly handles good with imperceptible body roll and a firm, planted surefootedness through corners. The transmissions Eight-speed automatic/all-wheel drive format delivers a Fuel economy figure of (litres/100 km): 11.8 cities; 7.8 highway; 10.0 combined. There is not a lot to complain about. The Gran Coupé is different in looks and character than the normal 3 Series and so you pay a somewhat painful premium for that, at a starting price of $55,600. Of course, the “must have” option will make your eyes water, but this car just begs to have all the bits and pieces; particularly the “M” shiny stuff to make buyers feel good. It really does the car justice in the performance stakes. A truly wonderful car to own and drive. 2015 BMW 435 Gran Coupé Base price: $55,600; as tested: $65,645
