The main difference between the normal Toyota Prius and the PHV is that you can recharge the PHV battery forma household electric outlet allowing it to travel around 25 kilometers on electric charge alone using no gas.

The Prius is powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder Hybrid Synergy Drive gas engine rated at 98 hp at 5,200 rpm with 105 lb-ft torque at 4,000 rpm. The electric motor is rated at 80 hp/153 lb-ft electric motor which charges a powerful but lightweight lithium-ion battery pack. Transmission is via a two speed CVT unit driving the front wheels.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid is ready to go with a full charge in as little as 90 minutes when connected to a 220v dedicated socket or 3 hours when connected to a 110v dedicated 15 amp socket – and automatically switches to its full hybrid gasolineelectric system once the electric power gone so “range anxiety” is eliminated.

Note, battery range will vary depending on conditions such as hilly terrain or in colder conditions when the battery is under more pressure and of course how much ancillary equipment such as AC, heaters, seat warmers, defrosters, audio equipment get used. Still judicious drivers can monitor all this use via a display in the instrument panel.

Fuel efficiency is predictably impressive with the Prius Plug-in Hybrid’s Electric Vehicle range – up to 25 KM in city driving on battery alone. So it entirely feasible you can magically use no gas at all if you stay within this daily commute.

The Prius Plug-in is also capable of driving on electric power alone (or EV mode) up to 100 kilometres per hour. Toyota Canada says the Prius PHV has fuel consumption rated at 1.75 litres/100 km. CO2 emissions come in at 41 g/km, which is simply an amazing number.

On the road the Prius plug hybrid feels no different to a normal Prius. It offers benign handling and a comfortable ride and feels stable and safe.

Available through Toyota dealerships across Canada at a suggested starting price of $35,755 the Prius Plug-in offers the lowest starting MSRP of any plug-in hybrid in Canada. Highly recommended.
