2015 KIA EARNS NHTSA 5-STAR SAFETY RATING

K

ia Motors America’s (KMA) all-new 2015 Sedona has earned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) 5-star overall safety rating. With its long list of standard safety features and robust body structure, the Sedona received a 5-star rating on the NHTSA front-impact, side-impact and pole tests. “NHTSA’s recent 5-star rating of the 2015 Sedona is a testament to Kia’s commitment to safety. The Sedona is all-new for 2015 and combines CUV-like styling, inside and out, with exceptional quality and the tremendous value our brand is known for,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning. “As families begin planning summer vacations in their Sedona’s,

they can feel confident in the engineering that went into their vehicle and that NHTSA has validated the product with its highest safety rating.” The 2015 Sedona is built on an all-new chassis with static torsional stiffness that is 36-percent greater than its closest segment competitor. Furthermore, 76 percent of the body is composed of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS), which provides exceptional rigidity, durability and crash protection for all occupants. Adding to its stout structure, the Sedona has been engineered to distribute impact loads evenly through the body with ultra-high-strength steel tubes installed in the A pillars.

Hyundai Launching Online Vehicle Service Scheduling

H

yundai customers nationwide will soon be able to use their computer, tablet, or mobile phone to schedule a service appointment for their vehicle at their local Hyundai dealership through an innovating system the company is rolling-out. The “Hyundai Car Care Scheduling” platform provides customers online access to their dealer’s service scheduling system and the ability to book an appointment at their convenience. “Hyundai has a long history of adopting the latest technology and bringing it to consumers, and this is an extension of that commitment,” said Annie Deslauriers, Director of Customer Services at Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. “By offering our customers the ability to schedule their vehicle service online, on their own time, Hyundai dealers are standing-out from the competition with this modern premium approach.”

Deslauriers adds this is part of the company’s on-going commitment to elevating the Hyundai shopping and ownership experience by exceeding customer expectations. “Delivering this level of flexibility completely changes the customer-dealer dynamic. More and more industries are moving toward online appointment scheduling, so it just makes sense for a progressive company like Hyundai to jump on this movement,” she said. The Hyundai Car Care Scheduling will allow customers to select appointments based on a preferred service advisor, place the service in their personal calendar, and schedule reminders by SMS or e-mail. Currently in the trial phase with 10 Hyundai dealers, the program will roll-out to participating dealers nationwide by the end of the year. Hyundai Car Care Scheduling will be provided to customers free of charge.

Refreshed For 2016, The New Lexus ES Fuses Striking Design

A

s the best-selling model in Lexus’ impressive lineup of luxury sedans, the ES has come to define the very essence of what a luxury low sedan should be. It was evident that this trend will continue when Lexus took the veils off of the exciting new 2016 ES at the Shanghai International Motor Show earlier today. The new improved ES features an exciting, sportier attitude, highlighted by elegant yet progressive exterior styling, improved luxurious interior construction and the new innovative available safety system, Lexus Safety System +. For 2016, Lexus designers have cast a daring new form with the refreshed ES. A commanding front fascia that features Lexus’s trademark spindle grille, framed in combination of accentuated brilliant satin chrome, gives the new ES a new sense of luxury and instantly distinguishes it from the crowd. Accompanying the grille is a pair of newly designed headlights, now equipped with LED projector technology, while iconic “L”-shaped arrowhead Daytime Running Lights (DRL) extend outside the headlight element for a distinctive look that links it with other Lexus models. The 2016 model takes luxury to the extreme with a collection of new interior colour combinations, including exquisite multi-colour themes that exemplify elegance. The seats are now offered in four different colours: Topaz Brown, Ivory, Moonstone and Black. Customers can choose from the 3 seat materials: leather,

premium leather, and NuLuxe. In addition, four styles of interior trim have been carefully selected to harmonize with the colour choice. First appearing in the GS and LS sedans, Shimamoku is a high-end finish of luxurious wood created through a multistep manufacturing process by highly skilled craftsmen. Furthermore, quilting has been added to the comfortable-yet-supportive seats. Additional trim enhancements to cabin-facing door surfaces and the center console unite the interior in upscale feel and design cohesion. Colour-matched upholstery appears along the center console as well, coupled with a new leather boot-enclosed gear selector. For the driver, a new, sporty steering wheel provides improved feel and view of the instrument panel. A larger 4.2-inchThin Film Transistor (TFT) colour multi-information display conveniently places vital vehicle and route statistics as well as multimedia information front and center. To further enhance control over the Remote Touch Interface (RTI), the 2016 ES adds “Enter” buttons on either side of the interface. Since its inception, Lexus has offered the quiet and smooth driving vehicles to global market. The 2016 ES upholds that tradition with a host of improvements to provide the driver with an exquisite driving experience.

All-new 2016 Optima sedan makes global debut

F

ive years ago the re-designed Optima debuted at the New York International Auto Show and introduced a game-changing intermediate sedan that catalyzed the brand’s design-led transformation. History was repeated when the all-new 2016 Optima, a symbol of the Kia brand’s maturation through continuous refinement and obsessive attention to detail, made its debut recently at the 2015 New York Auto show. Conceived under the watchful eye of Kia’s president and chief design officer, Peter Schreyer, with modern and instantly recognizable design cues, the Optima maintains its athletic identity but rides on a chassis that is longer, wider and stiffer for improved ride and handling and a more spacious cabin. Available with three engine choices, including a new 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that’s mated to a seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), the Optima is more confident than ever on the road. The all-new Optima’s roomier, more luxurious cabin features an impressive level of craftsmanship that will come standard across five trim levels – LX, LX+ Turbo, EX, SX Turbo and SXL (with optional equipment packages throughout) – when sales begin in the fourth quarter of 2015. The all-new Optima will be built at Kia’s plant* in West Point, Georgia. Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle’s launch date. The all-new Optima takes convenience to the

next level with a long list of technologies across the various trim levels. Standard on every Optima is a rear-camera display [vi] while SXL trims offer an available 360-degree Camera Monitoring System8. Available driver-aid technology, including Advanced Smart Cruise Control (SCC)8, Blind Spot Detection (BSD)8, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)8 and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)8 – which, under appropriate conditions, will bring the vehicle to a complete stop to potentially avoid a collision or reduce damage – makes the task of driving easier and more convenient. Also available for the first time on any Kia vehicle are Bi-function HID headlights with Dynamic Bending Lamps (DBL) and intuitive High Beam Assist (HBA), which recognizes oncoming traffic and automatically switches the lights to low beam until the opposing vehicle has passed. The all-new Optima is available with three engine choices, striking a performance balance between sportiness and fuel efficiency. Two power plants carry over from the previous generation, the 2.4-litre GDI four-cylinder, standard on the LX and EX models, and the 2.0-litre GDI turbo engine, standard on the SXL and SX Turbo models. While the engines have yet to receive EPA certification, the 2.4-litre is estimated to produce 185 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 178 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. The 2.0-litre turbo is expected to generate approximately 247 horsepower at 6,000

he newly founded BMW Startup Garage sets out to tap directly into the potential of particularly innovative startups. With the BMW Startup Garage, the BMW Group is continuing its successful collaboration with startup companies. The combination of the strategic and global planning clout of a large corporation with the culture of ongoing innovation, creativity and venturesomeness that marks out successful startups has already proved a winning recipe. In addition to the BMW Startup Garage, the venture capital company BMW i Ventures also fosters the exchange with young enterprises developing innovative solutions for urban mobility. The BMW Group has, moreover, joined forces with the Centre for Innovation and Business Creation – UnternehmerTUM – at Munich’s Technical University in order to set up the “TEchFounders” accelerator programme for technology startups. The Accelerator Programme introduces the BMW Group to innovative technologies, products and services at a very early stage, with the option of working together with the startup teams. One team headed by innovation managers Gregor Gimmy and Matthias Meyer has just come on board the BMW Startup Garage. Gimmy explains why: “It was time to ask ourselves how our company can tap into this potential in an efficient way.” The BMW Group has always actively sought new, path breaking technologies, but until now it has been difficult for startups to present their

ideas to the company – the internal processes and procedures of a major enterprise can be quite daunting to fledgling companies. With its slimmed-down, efficient processes, the BMW Startup Garage now allows for swift and flexible collaborative projects. That way more startups can be identified and integrated more rapidly. Any interested startup companies can apply online to the BMW Startup Garage. The selection is then made directly via the BMW Startup Garage in close consultation with the innovation management team and the relevant departments of the BMW Group. Selected startups subsequently undergo a special programme lasting several months. At the core of this programme is the development of a functional prototype with an application relevant to the BMW Group. Startups also receive assistance in building up their network within the Group and in drawing up a business plan. In principle, any startup anywhere in the world can apply. And the scheme is not restricted to companies in the automotive sector, but extends to technologies that can be transferred to automotive engineering applications. However, applicants must meet a number of requirements as well: “We’re looking for good startups and not good inventors,” explains Matthias Meyer. “Anyone thinking of applying needs to bring along not just a great idea but a great team as well. After all, only a top-flight team can make ideas work successfully.”

Auto Crime Enforcement Protect your vehicle, “Treat your keys like cash”

F

or most British Columbians, personal vehicles are a trusted and necessary part of daily lives. You use them to run errands, get to work and for personal travel. Car thieves are no different, except they want to use your car too. April was Auto Crime Enforcement Month in B.C. and the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT), the provincial government and Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) are encouraging vehicle owners to help protect their property and “Treat your keys like cash.” “Our call to action – Treat Your Keys like Cash – is a reminder to all vehicle owners to be vigilant about safeguarding their vehicle keys, fobs and personal property,” said Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton. “We all need to do our part to help IMPACT and other police agencies to protect the gains we’ve made in reducing auto crime since 2003.” “Unfortunately, after 10 years of declining auto thefts in British Columbia, we’ve seen the number of thefts increase in 2014,” said Inspector Peter Jadis, Officer in Charge of IMPACT. “Auto Crime Enforcement Month is an opportunity for us to remind people about the importance of protecting their vehicles.” Inspector Jadis explains that vehicle security technology has evolved over the past 10 years and car thieves know that it’s extremely difficult to steal a vehicle without the keys, which is why they’re looking to steal keys themselves.

“People will leave their keys, smart keys and valet keys in desks, lockers, or even in the console of their vehicle. This defeats the built in security features and allows thieves to simply drive away. This is why we’re encouraging people to treat their keys like cash and protect them accordingly,” said Inspector Jadis. In addition to protecting vehicle keys, vehicle owners are encouraged to take additional safe guards to protect their vehicle. These include: •Do not leave your vehicle unattended while it is running •Do not leave your smart keys, valet or emergency keys in the vehicle while it’s unoccupied •Remember that your vehicle is a display case for thieves. Items that you overlook as trivial such as loose change, bags, garage door openers and mail may have value to a thief. Keep items out of sight and secure your vehicle when you leave it •Use an anti-theft device such as a steering wheel lock or an after-market immobilizer, especially on older model vehicles “With auto crime on the rise in B.C., we’re urging customers to keep their keys secure at all times, lock their vehicle whenever it’s unattended and remove electronics and other valuables,” said Lindsay Matthews, ICBC’s director responsible for road safety. “We’ll continue to invest in auto crime because less crime benefits everyone and helps control claims costs and keep rates as low as possible.”
