midst an environment with a Canadian dollar that is declining in value on international markets and an automotive industry that is raising vehicle prices, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. is celebrating the next significant step toward barrier-free international trade by announcing that – effective January 15 – the manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) of many Hyundai models have been reduced by up to $1,300. This move is made possible with the recent implementation of the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement (CKFTA). The price reductions affect a wide variety of 2015 model year Hyundai vehicles in the company’s line-up, from the Accent subcompact and Elantra compact, to the Equus full-size premium sedan and 7-passenger Santa Fe XL SUV. “Hyundai is pleased to pass the benefits of this significant free trade agreement on to consumers,” said Don Romano, President and CEO of Hyundai Auto Canada. “We wanted to take action quickly after the government took the first step toward removing the import duty. Hyundai vehicles have a well-known reputation for making advanced technology and premium features available to consumers at an accessible price.” Previous to the agreement, a 6.1% federal import duty was applied to the landed cost of vehicles manufactured in South Korea. The CKFTA eliminates the duty in three annual reductions, with the first being effective this month. Vehicles manufactured within North America are already imported to Canada dutyfree due to the existing North American Free Trade Agreement. “This is definitive proof that the Free Trade Agreement between Canada and South Korea delivers a true benefit to consumers,” added Romano. “We believe that eliminating international trade barriers empower consumers to make more informed purchase decisions by providing a clearer picture of the merits of a product. Pricing is obviously a major factor in that decision, so, by adjusting the prices of Hyundai vehicles, our customers will see just

New Scion iM on the way in 2015 Scion introduced the all-new Scion iM in April at the recent New York International Auto Show. The iM is the official name for the production version of the iM Concept car shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show last November. The new iM represents one of the two new models that Scion will bring to market in the next three years aimed at independently minded drivers. Scion say, the vehicles will bring exciting options for Scion’s youthful customers looking for vehicles to support both adventure and sensibility. Beyond the name, drivers can expect the production iM to carry forward some of the sporty looks and versatility displayed in the concept version. From its inception in 2003, Scion xB and tC coupe have proved very popular in North America. The most recent Scion is the FR-S sports car, which is also sold as a Subaru in Canada. Scion is keeping its card close to its chest on the full spec of the iM; however rumours on the Internet are rife of a body kitted version with 19-inch wheels and adjustable sports suspension. As with all Scions, a full range of dealer-installed accessories should be available for the iM. Engine and transmission may be a Toyota sourced 2.0-liter four- cylinder unit or bigger 2.4L engine hooked up to a six-speed-manual or automatic transmission. More details on both the production iM and sedan will be available in coming months.

Trio of GOOD DESIGN awards for latest Kia models

(SEOUL)– Kia Motors has received prestigious GOOD DESIGN awards for three of its most recent models, the Kia K900 (known as ‘K9’ or ‘Quoris’ in some countries), Soul EV and GT4 Stinger concept car, in the award program’s ‘Transportation’ category. Chosen by GOOD DESIGN’s jury of independent design professionals, industry specialists and design media, the three Kia models were evaluated on a range of criteria – innovative design, new technologies, form, materials, construction, concept, function, utility, energy efficiency and sensitivity to the environment. Soon-Nam Lee, Vice President of Overseas Marketing at Kia Motors Corporation, commented, “These three GOOD DESIGN awards cap a particularly strong year for the Kia Motors design team, which has picked up a number of prizes for its work on our latest models. The Soul EV and GT4 Stinger are two of the most striking and well-received designs we’ve ever produced, and the K900 appeals for its classic, yet thoroughly modern, styling and contemporary values of luxury. The GOOD DESIGN honors are testament to the team’s consistent design excellence.” The Kia design team, led since 2006 by Peter Schreyer, has won widespread acclaim for its striking and innovative work, and for contributing to Kia’s substantial global growth in recent years. Established in 1950, the GOOD DESIGN awards program – organized annually by The Chicago Athenaeum – celebrates design excellence across 25 different categories. Designers and manufactures in over 30 nations have won awards for contemporary design, and past recipients of GOOD DESIGN awards include everything from a paperclip to a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and NASA spacecraft.

High Performance Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution will exit in 2015: Last chance to buy one!

S

ad news as the legendary turbocharged, all-wheel-drive 291 hp Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution will be out of production in 2015 after a fabled run and gaining many fans. Already phased out in other markets, Evo production will finally come to an end in June 2015. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution or “EVO” as it is affectionately known has a global cult following as a under the radar modern day muscle car. The 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X will be the last of its breed, as Mitsubishi now looks to focus its attention on more fuel-efficient offerings. Over the years, the Evo’s stealth looks combined with a turbocharged 2.0L four cylinder engine, ActiveAll-Wheel Drive, responsive transmission and light tuning delivered per-

formance on a par with many sports cars in its day and more than surprised owners of BMWs and Porsches at the stop light Grand Prix! Web reports say the final goodbye version may be a special edition with a manual transmission, extra horsepower and tuned suspension and other performance parts. The unique model will cost more than the current Evo GSR, which retails for $35,305. Mitsubishi may develop a new performance model, but there is no word on what model it will be based on. No pricing information on the final 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X has been released, but it probably won’t be much different from the 2014 Evo X, which is currently being offered at a base price of $41,998.

Subaru Rally Team Canada prepares for 2015 Canadian Rally Championship

S

ubaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) is excited to announce that seasoned veterans Antoine L’Estage and Alan Ockwell will join Subaru Rally Team Canada (SRTC) in their quest for their 11th Canadian Rally Championship for Marques during the 2015 Canadian Rally Championship (CRC) season. Hot off the heels of a highly successful 2014 CRC season, L’Estage created history by becoming the first driver to win every CRC event in one year and capture the driver’s championship, while Alan Ockwell, who co-drove with L’Estage from the second CRC event forward, won the co-driver title for 2014. The extremely experienced pairing will be behind the wheel of the SRTC 2015 Subaru WRX STI with anticipation of being the quickest car, driver and team to ever compete in the CRC. Subaru was awarded the North American Rally Cup for Marques in 2014 from the combined results of SRTC in CRC events and Subaru Rally Team USA in the Rally America Championship. L’Estage is a 7-time CRC driver champion, while Ockwell is a 3-time CRC co-driver champion. L’Estage is also a 7-time winner of the North American Rally Cup. Ockwell has won two other CRC co-driver titles with SRTC in 2008 and 2009, making his return to SRTC reminiscent of that

success. “I’m delighted to be given such an opportunity,” said Antoine L’Estage. “I cannot wait to start working with Subaru Rally Team Canada and Rocket Rally Racing.” Subaru Rally Team Canada will continue to be managed in cooperation with Rocket Rally Racing (RRR) and Patrick Richard, based out of Squamish, BC, for the 2015 season. The SRTC 2015 Subaru WRX STI was developed from the ground up at the RRR facility using state of the art equipment and materials. “Rocket Rally is proud to have enjoyed so much success with Subaru Rally Team Canada over the years and I am happy that Antoine and Alan will join us to go after another manufacturer championship this season,” said Patrick Richard. “Between Antoine and myself, we have won 11 of the last 12 driver championships in Canada. With this strong car, driver and team combination for 2015 we have set ambitious goals for ourselves - we hope to be breaking stage records everywhere we go.” The 2015 CRC season kicks off on February 6th at the Rallye Perce-Neige Maniwaki, in Maniwaki, QC, marking the 50th anniversary of the event.

The story behind AMG:

Specialist tuning division turns Mercedes- Benz into Super Cars

E

ver wondered what those three magical letters AMG stand for on the back of those cool- looking and uber expensive Mercedes-Benz? Mercedes-AMG GmbH, commonly known as AMG, is the high performance division of Mercedes-Benz. AMG independently engineers, manufactures and customizes MercedesBenz vehicles and is based in Affalterbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. AMG was originally an independent engineering firm specializing in performance improvements for Mercedes vehicles and started off by designing and testing racing engines. It expanded its business into building custom road cars based upon standard Mercedes cars from the late 1960’s. The letters “AMG” stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach – the firm’s founders. AMG models command a premium and are typically the most expensive and highest-performance of each Mercedes-Benz class. AMG is basically the in-house tuning firm for Mercedes- Benz and offers upgrades to engines, bodywork, transmissions, interiors and suspension, brakes and handling components. AMG models typically have more aggressive looks, a higher level of performance, better handling, better stability and more extensive use of carbon fiber than their regular Mercedes counterparts. It is rare to find any AMG model built identically. AMG variants are usually badged with two numerals, as opposed to regular Mercedes-Benz vehicles, which have three. Typical AMG performance enhancements, which could all be custom ordered by the buyer, include increased engine displacements (5.2 litre, 5.4 litre), with high-performance modifications included ported and polished heads and intake manifolds. lightened valve trains. more aggressive camshafts, more powerful fuel delivery and turbocharging options. Distinctive AMG wheels are often coupled with an AMG performance suspension packages and high-performance brakes. AMG body kits from subtle front spoilers, to more aggressive body modifications. Other

options included Recaro seats, special AMG steering wheels, special instrument clusters, color coding chrome delete option (All chrome trim can be colour-coded or painted satin black). Customer can also order; in –car refrigerators, decorative shift knobs, custom hi-fi stereo systems, custom upholstery and enhanced interior wood, carbon fibre, leather and aluminum trim packages. AMG also does consultancy work – for example providing engines for the ultra high performance cars as Zonda and Huayra and Pagani, and have also worked with companies such as Aston Martin in technical partnerships. All AMG engines are entirely built by one of 50 dedicated AMG engine builders who fit each engine they produce with an engraved plaque depicting their signature. As part of the official Mercedes product line, the AMG models are sold side-byside with regular production models, unlike those offered by other Mercedes tuning firms such as Brabus. In recent years, one of the most exclusive AMG lines is the AMG “Black Series” models. The Black Series treatment is only available on 2- door vehicles, and modifications include major weight reductions, special seats, higher horsepower engines, and significantly greater overall performance. Black Series models are known as street legal race cars. The SLS AMG Black Series was tested by America’s Motor Trend magazine and found to have a 0-60 time of 3.2 seconds, and a quarter mile time of 11.1 seconds at 129.8 mph. Recently Mercedes-Benz has revealed the first official details on its latest sports car, called the AMG GT. The standard AMG GT will produce 456 bhp from its V8 engine. This allows for a 0-62 mph sprint time of four seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 189 mph. Meanwhile, the AMG GT S offers 503 bhp and has a quicker 0-62 mph sprint time of just 3.8 seconds. The limited top speed is slightly increased 193 mph. The Mercedes AMG GT will be launched in April 2015.

esigned in the US and built in Italy, the 2015 Jeep Renegade is a very different kind of Jeep. Redesigned more as a sporty SUV without the retro touches of the iconic Jeep brand – somehow Chrysler/Fiat have managed to pull off a stunning little contemporary small SUV/Crossover that will appeal to the masses not just Jeep fans. However despite the Renegade will still have Jeeps legendary off-road prowess. Base models will be front-wheel drive, but full-time 4x4 (“Jeep Active Drive”) will be available on all models. A rear axle that disconnects when not needed for traction promises improved fuel economy. The range-topping Trailhawk edition is built for serious off-road duty, featuring a taller ride height and clearance, 17-inch wheels, hill descent control and a 4WD system with lower gearing designed for rock crawling. All 4WD models offer SelecTerrain dynamic modes that optimize traction for snow, sand, mud and rocks. The Jeep Renegade will also offer a choice of four-cylinder engines: a turbocharged 1.4-liter rated at 160 horsepower or a larger, non-turbo 2.4-liter good for 184 hp. The smaller engine comes with only a six-speed manual transmission, while the 2.4-liter pairs with a nine-speed automatic, similar to that on the Jeep Cherokee. At about 16 inches shorter and 2 inches narrower than the Cherokee, the Renegade becomes the smallest Jeep in the lineup. However it will offer many of the same features found on High spec Jeeps, including a smartphone-integrated infotainment system with 5- and 6.5-inch touchscreens, a 7-inch configurable gauge display, and driver aids that include a rearview camera, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning and forward collision warning Jeep boasts “70 advanced safety features” in the 2015 Renegade. Interiors will be as equally cool with color keyed detailing around the cockpit and on the center, floor and door consoles. The 18.5 cu.ft. of interior storage space expands to 50.8 cu.ft. With rear seats folded flat, A “My Sky” removable sunroof affair with roof panels are made of honeycomb fiberglass polyurethane will stow neatly into the vehicle’s cargo area. The 2015 Jeep Renegade will hit dealers in January of 2015. Jeep has not announced pricing, but the Renegade will compete with models ranging from the Kia Soul and Nissan Juke, with a base price of nearly $20,000.

MERCEDES - BENZ GLA 250:

New Compact Crossover has much to offer

-By Veeno Dewan

T

he 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 is a new Compact Crossover designed to complement the B-Class and the CLA line up. Whatever size of CUV model you need, Mercedes has you covered with its mid-size and large class GLK, ML, GL and G model series. Aimed as an entry level premium Cross Over, the GLA competes against such worthy CUV’s as the BMW X1, Audi Q3 Range Rover Evoque and the new Lincoln MKC. The GLA is based on the new Mercedes CLA sedan – although revised and stiffened for light offroad capability with a higher ground clearance. Designwise, the GLA is less clunky and boxy-looking than many of competitors and goes for a softer, more graceful and less aggressive look – not akin to a raised CLA with a high roofline. The GLA is a tad shorter, lower and wider than the competition and more aerodynamic. All Canada-bound GLAs will have the latest version of the Mercedes 4Matic all-wheeldrive system and a seven-speed dual clutch automatic The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLAs arrives as an entry level GLA 250 version with a 2 liter 208-horsepower four cylinder engine producing 250lbs.-ft of torque mated to a an seven-speed automatic and all-wheel drive system. The GLA also receives a new torque-on-demand rear axle combined with the latest version of 4Matic which is lighter and more efficient. The active rear diffs low weight, combined with a standard start/stop system, helps keep fuel consumption

low. The GLA interior is also not unlike the CLA with a neat clean look to it and high-grade materials dominate in the soft-touch plastics, brushed aluminum, polished wood and piano black accents. The dash is well-designed with a prominent flat screen display on top of the center dash and prominent metal finish air ball vent. Seats and ergonomics are particularly fine and there is ample room for four adults in the well- appointed cabin. The more expensive and high performance orientated 45 AMG model features a tremendous 355 horsepower from a 2.0-litre turbo engine teamed with a dual clutch seven speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive. In keeping with AMG ethos, all 45 AMG’s have upgraded suspension, brakes and steering special interior and exterior trim. Acceleration is quick as expected from the AMG model with torque at 332 lb- ft and a 0 to 100 km/h of less than 5

seconds. The AMG typically arrives with a plethora of AMG accessories and branding. The GLA 250 comes very well-equipped and has an attractive base price of $37,200. However pricing can rapidly goes North when you start adding options such as the premium package ($3,800) comprising such fancy goodies as a rear-view camera, panoramic sunroof, and a voicecontrolled navigation system. The 45 AMG (Base price: $50,500) offers an optional sport package on the 250 comprising of an upgraded sport brake system, 19-inch AMG wheels, an AMG styling package, and aluminum interior trim. Other AMG changes offer a performance-oriented version of the 4Matic system, revised steering and suspension, an uprated cooling system, sports exhaust and an AMG Speedshift version of the Dual Clutch Transmission. Diesel models that will be offered elsewhere around the world are not scheduled for Canada as yet. The 2015 Mercedes Benz GLAs are on sale at Canadian dealerships now. BUYING A NEW CAR: Advice for Newcomers to Canada

I

f you are new to Canada and thinking about buying a new car, the Canadian auto market offers a huge range of different vehicles to suit every need. For a newcomer coming from a country with a smaller automobile market with a narrower choice, this can be daunting as you begin your search. However, considering a new car is the second most expensive purchase after buying a home it is worth doing extensive research to determine what kind of vehicle will suit your needs. Here are some advice tips:

Do the Research Talk to the owners of vehicles you are interested in buying to get first-hand knowledge about the experience of owning a particular model. Do not be invested in brand loyalty too heavily as the quality gap between domestic and import brands have narrowed considerably in recent years. There are dozens of car magazines to research and plenty of Canadian automotive websites that are full of reviews and road tests of all types of vehicles. Things to consider once you have defined the type, class and price range of the vehicle you are contemplating, is: how it compares to the competition, cost, performance, features, fuel economy, warrantee, reliability, running costs deprecation and eventual resale value?

Know How the Pricing System Works • Before you walk into a new car dealer it is worth knowing a number of important information points so you can obtain the best price for your new vehicle M.S.R.P. - The Manufacturer’s suggested retail price, commonly known as the List price or “window sticker” is the price point new vehicle dealers work from. However this is nearly always negotiable except for high-demand cars that can sell more

than the list price and have waiting list of customers. • Dealer invoice price - This is the actual price the dealer pays the manufacturer for the vehicle and there is usually some variance in this. This margin is important as it tells the new car buyer how much profit the dealer can make on the sale of particular vehicle.

problems with vehicles in the warrantee period. Also buying from a dealer comes with all kinds of a consumer safeguards and protection.

Take A Test Drive

Good times to buy -There are different Canadian automotive website that show what manufactures and dealer are offering incentives and for what models. Slow sale periods in the winter, end of year inventory clearances, end of the month weekends and when dealers are clearing out previous year’s cars to make way for new models are always a good time to look and make a buying decision.

At the dealership the test drive in a vehicle that interests you is the first step and no vehicle should be bought without having first being driven ─ no matter how much you like the vehicle. A half-hour test ride in urban and highways roads will give a good idea of how the vehicle drives and feels. If you are planning to have a spouse or offspring drive the car, ensure he or she comes along for the ride. Bring the family along to test out the back seat room, use the controls, explore the features and be critically objective as well as subjective about the vehicle and how it will meet your needs for now and in the future.

Dealers offer a huge choice of models all under one roof, and have experienced staff who can help educate and make an informed decision on what vehicle would suit you best and what to buy. Dealers also have in-house finance departments that can offer ways to help finance a vehicle such as: No interest payments, low rate financing, attractive leasing rates and cash rebates that just some of the sweeteners that are offered to new car buyers. Also, don’t forget dealer have full service facilities, factory trained mechanics and will take care of any

No matter which option you choose- Lease or Buy, you will have a monthly, weekly or bi weekly car payment – for a few years at least, unless you are lucky enough to be a cash buyer. Buying a car means just that- usually putting a deposit on a car and getting a loan to buy it from a financial institution. You may be charged interest for borrowing that money- certainly with a bank. With a lease, instead of borrowing the full purchase price of the car, you are only borrowing the amount the car will depreciate

• Rebates, Incentives and special offers. - There are always special offers promotions, factory/dealer rebates and other incentives to increase vehicle sales at dealers. Be aware and research when manufactures and dealers are offering these programs and evaluate them carefully as you could make substantial savings.

over t h e term of the lease. For example with a three-year lease , on a vehicle and taking into account regular wear and tear (known as the “residual value”), then you only have to finance the difference between the purchase price and the residual value. This is the basic reason lease payments are lower than loan payments. Each method of paying for a new vehicle has its pros and cons. When you buy a car, at the end of the payment period - you own the car fully and it has some residual value and equity. The cons are that payments are more expensive then leasing and once

the vehicle is out of its warrantee period you are liable for any repairs or maintenance. In leasing, you have peace of mind in ownership, lower payments and hence better cash flow. Since leases are generally between two and four years, the vehicle you buy is almost always going to be fully covered by warranties. Once the lease is up, you can either walk away, or upgrade to a newer model. On the other hand unless you negotiate to buy the car at the end of its lease you will never really own the vehicle and so will not build equity.

Doing the Deal If all goes well on the test drive and you are ready to buy your vehicle, ensure you use all the research tools and information

you have to work out a price that takes into account factory and dealer offered rebates, discount and incentives. It is a good idea to have this information in a report to use as a negotiating tool when dealing with a salesperson. Depending on the dealer this can be a tricky stage as the salesman also has to ensure his company is making a profit and will try to push for the full MSRP. Buyers at a minimum should know the price the dealer paid the factory for the car and all the rebates available to them. This is where a few hours spent doing the research can end up saving you hours of negotiation and hundreds or thousands of dollars on the new car price. The art of the deal is to allow the dealer to make a reasonable profit as that is why they exist, but not all at your expense. If you feel the deal is not in your favour and your counter offers are not being accepted, be prepared to pull out quotes from other dealers for the same vehicle if you have them. Dealerships hate to lose a sale and will try their best to win and keep your future business. Hopefully armed with this information you will have bought your shiny new car and be prepared for many years of enjoyable motoring.

2015 Lincoln MKC:

FRIDAY Jan 16, 2015 11 www.swmediagroup.ca

New compact luxury SUV is very impressive

I

n many eyes the new Lincoln MKC is one of the best looking new premium SUV’s to enter the markets recently. Sleek, tightly styled, bold and sporty. It is impressive from any angle. With it rakish profile, split-wing signature grille and full width it looks unique and unmistakably classy. Starting at $39,940 in Canada, the 2015 Lincoln MKC arrives as a full five-seater with all the luxury and technology you could want. Power comes via a pair of refined EcoBoost engines — either a standard 2.0-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder turbocharged engine delivering 240 hp and 270 lb/ft of torque or an optional 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder turbocharged producing 285 hp @ 5,500 rpm and 305 lb.-ft. of torque @ 2,750 rpm. Canadian models are sold only with all-wheel drive. Entry MKS models come very highly equipped with the Premiere Equipment Group, while the Select Equipment Group ($2,260) adds ambient lighting, 10-way power front passenger seat, a wood trim package, LED turn signal indicators on auto-folding side mirrors, tonneau cover and 18inch aluminum wheels. Our tester was equipped with the full equipment spec comprising of: Hands free lift gate, BLIS safety system with cross traffic alert system, climate package panoramic vista roof with power shade, power tilt/telescoping steering column, heated and cooled front seats, voice activated navigation system, heated steering wheel and auto high beams. Also in the standard features list are: Power door locks, win-

dows and power mirrors, climate-controlled air conditioning, AM/FMCD player with nine speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, navigation system, Multifunction steering wheel controls, adaptive cruise control with collision warning, 10-way adjustable driver’s seat, 4-way adjustable passenger seat, heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, hands-free foot-activated automatic rear tailgate, auto headlights, dual front air bags, dual front side air bags, side curtain air bags, driver’s knee air bag and Anti-lock Braking (ABS). Also included was the Technology Package ($2,250) that includes a parking assist system, adaptive cruise control, a forward sensing system and lane keeping system. The optional

EcoBoost package ($1,959) included 19-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels with 245/45R19 tires. A fabulous upgraded audio system ($995) rounded out the option list. Our tester also came with a White platinum Tri coat paint ($600) and Ebony premium leather trim and looked very up-market. The interior of the MKC is well up there with the best from Germany in terms of materials, fit finish and design. There is a flair and air of confidence in the seamless transitions from dash to door and center console and the top-grade materials that fuse wood accents, soft leather, and high quality plastics.

2015 Honda CR -V

Our tester was the fully loaded Touring priced at $35,790 which adds all-wheel-drive and more shiny trim on the outside along with Standard Touring spec featuring: Alloy wheels, Hill start assist, lane departure warning (LKAS), tire pressure monitoring system, stability assist with traction control, cruise control, air, blind spot monitoring, proximity key with push button start, text message function, 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat memory position, heated front seats, 7 speaker audio system, HondaLink, Bluetooth, MP3, Siri Eyes Free compatibility, Sirius XM, Navigation, cargo tie-down. The CRV’s cabin still has its bases covered with its large windows and excellent visibility, a good step in height and the roomy ambience front and rear that is so well liked. Improve-

ments include more a soft-touch dash with faux stitching, and soft textures materials instead of hard plastics, better and more attractive looking controls and instrument dials and HondaLink telematics interface. Seating and ergonomics remain good front and rear and the CR-V seats five people in comfort. Interior flexibility is outstanding with the neat convertible rear seat that tucks and tumbles into the floor with a simple tug pull – leaving a true flat cargo space. The rear hatch; which can also be ordered with a power function is well-sized with a decent rear load height for cargo. On the road, the CR-V benefits from the new 2.4-litre, which has an increase in torque to 181 pound-feet from 163 gives the CR-V quicker responses from traffic lights and for highway passing. The continuously variable transmission can sounds strained when pushed hard, but is way better than most CVT units out there. In everyday situations the CVT makes good use of the extra torque and is well matched to the engines rev output. The retuned suspension and supple handling make for a comfortable, no-drama ride for all occupants. This is no outright sportiness in the CR-V and handling is benign and undramatic at best. The CVT does endow the CR-V with excellent fuel economy and a Natural Resources Canada fuel consumption rating of 8.6/6.9/7.8 L/100 km (city/ highway/combined) for the front-wheel-drive model and 9.1/7.2/8.3 L/100 km for Real Time AWD models, To sum up the Honda CR-V continues as one of the best compact CUV’s on the market due to its practicality, reliability, stellar fuel economy, and good overall value and resale. There are few cons to speak of – there is no V6 version or a larger engine option for towing, but that’s not a deal breaker here. This is an excellent family CUV that goes straight to the top of the list in this segment 2015 Honda CR-V priced from the $25,990 - $33,790.

Driver ergonomics are good with well-cushioned heated and cooled seats and decent enough ergonomics. The dash instruments and touches controls for the major features are easy to use with the latest version of Ford’s Sync system proving easy to use. Note ─ there is no traditional clunky shift lever for the transmission – instead one uses a row of vertical push buttons on the left side of the centre stack for drive, reverse and park modes. Simple, elegant and frees us center floor console space. The rear compartment features the same high quality ambience of the front cockpit and seats three passengers. A foot activated rear tailgate accesses a roomy cargo area. On the road, the 2.3 Ecoboost four cylinders is a well- matched power unit for the compact sized MKC. With 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, the MKC is delightfully spritely when hooked up to the six-speed automatic gearbox. The Ecoboost delivers excellent acceleration and passing power in a smooth, refined manner. Handling is also good with a planted, stable and very composed feel around corners thanks to stiffer sway bars and sus-

pension springs and adjustable dampers. Quick highway lane changes and fast cornering are accomplished with aplomb. The fuel efficient 2.3 liter Ecoboost engines delivers a Natural Resources Canada fuel economy figure of (L/100 km) 12.9 city, 9.2 highway To sum up, Lincoln has hit a home run with Lincoln MKC. It looks incredibly good with a heft of design and interior cabin as good as a Mercedes, yet is not conservative or stuffy. I do see the MKC appealing to younger buyers who want stylish looks, lots of technology and features in an iconic American brand. The Lincoln MKC deserves to succeed and has my vote for sure. Well recommended. 2015 Lincoln MKC – Base Priced from $39,940. Price as tested $55,920 including options, destination and delivery.

The cabin is quite roomy front and rear and with the back seats upright, the Soul can accommodate 19.3 cubic feet and a generous 53.4 cu. ft. with the 60/40-split/folding seats down. Other standout features include a flat load floor a wide square tailgate opening that allows for easy loading and unloading. On the road, the tall high cabin and upright windshield mean driving visibility is excellent and good clear, highsightlines mean parking and urban resolution graphics driving is easy. The addition of two and has a wonderfully intuitive interface. Also standard is GM’s OnStar service, which includes automatic crash notification, anlitres emergency asper 100 kilometres in the current sistance button, remote door unlock and stolen vehicle assistance. model compared to the 8.7 L/100 km Rear parking sensors are optional on the LS and LT. A rearview camera is also optional on the LT, as is an Advanced Safety package with forward collision alert, a lane-departure warning system, rear cross-traffic alert and blindspot monitoring. All of the above items are standard on the LTZ. Optional for the LTZ is automatic braking for frontal crash mitigation that’s bundled with the adaptive cruise control. Note ─ in US government crash testing, the Impala received a perfect five stars for overall crash protection, including five stars for total frontal-impact and five stars for total side-impact collisions. The US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Impala its highest possible rating of “Good” in the moderate frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests. The Impala is a pleasing performer on the road with the four cylinder engine proving decent enough; although my preference would be for the bigger V6 engine with 305 horses and the ability to accelerate faster and cruise smoother. The cheaper four cylinders is still a good engine, however a car of this size needs a power-plant that has some extra grunt in reserve in my opinion. The long-legged Impala’s large wheel base and supple suspension allows for a smooth ride and the interior is hushed and also pleasingly quiet thanks to extra sound insulation. There is nothing really too negative to say about the Impala – the few minor improvements for the 2015 model year make it better than ever.
