Letter from the Publisher Dear Readers, We still find ourselves in a state of not knowing what the next few months will look like. Therefore, AutoUrge remains a digital-only publication and we are adjusting just like everyone else. As far as the future, we hope to eventually be back in print, however as long as our normal distribution channels are not operating at 100%, we will remain digital. We are looking at a new option that would be of interest to our readers, however, details to follow later regarding any new developments. In the meantime, we hope you enjoyed the new enhancements we have made to our online magazine. We found ourselves enjoying a little healthy competition in May with our “June Cover Car Contest”. Everyone seemed to enjoy submitting and voting for their favorite. In fact, we most likely will do this again for a future issue. Congrats again to Dustin Mazzio and his 1991 Nissan Skyline GT-R for winning. Dustin also receives a Remote Car Start from The Car Audio Shop. See his car and the 2nd and 3rd place cars in the pages to follow. Don’t forget the “Photo of the Month” contest. Submit your best photo at AutoUrge.com and we hope to publish a winner in the JULY issue. Plus, the winner receives a $100 A & G Auto Spa gift card! Please support our local advertising partners as they are ready to help you with your needs. If you own or manage a local automotive business,
we would like to discuss with you how we can possibly partner together to share how your business is handling the “not” new normal we find ourselves in at this time. Contact us anytime via email or phone. Contact info on page 5. We are hiring. If you love cars and have sales experience, we would like to hear from you. Part-time/Full time available. Email us your resume to submit@AutoUrge.com RE: ADVREP. We hear from someone every day about how they miss the interactions at local car events, and we could not agree more. If you have an event coming up, please share it for FREE on our Events Calendar at AutoUrge. com. We look forward to hopefully seeing everyone again real soon. Stay safe. Sincerely,
Ron Tucker Publisher AutoUrge a Two Lane Ventures Company, LLC

Car Care 4 Tips to Keep Your Car Looking Its Best This Season and will be targeting all of our vehicles. Bird residue can do a lot of damage to your car’s paint system if left to dwell. A bottle of diluted Opti-Coat No Rinse and some paint-safe microfiber towels are a great way to remove contamination from your paint.
4. Call Your Local Detailer If you encounter foreign contamination that you are uncomfortable removing (tree sap, hard water, etc.) do not be afraid to call your favorite local detailer. We are more than happy to diagnose the problem and help make your car look its best again. P.S. pringtime is the absolute worst time for car care enthusiasts due to the abundance of pollen, unpredictable weather and the return of migratory birds. It is near impossible to keep any vehicle clean for more than a day or two. If you follow these four guidelines, your car will stay looking better than ever despite natures attempts to sabotage your clean car.
1. Keep It Waxed Keeping your car waxed is the number one thing you can do to make your vehicle remain clean for as long as possible. Wax has anti-static and hydrophobic properties that will repel dirt, dust, and pollen.
2. Regularly Dust Your Interior

I always recommend keeping a couple of allpurpose microfiber towels and a bottle of mild cleaner in your vehicle at all times. A bottle of diluted Opti-Coat No Rinse works great for this, for it leaves no greasy residue behind and has a very pleasant smell.

AUTOMOTIVE DISTANCING
ith the events of the last few months slowly working their way into our rearview mirrors, those of us in the automotive industry look forward to a low-speed acceleration that will return us to those events that get our hearts and minds thinking about cars once again. Many fairs, festivals, and car shows have been postponed or even canceled for the 2020 season, limiting our ability as automotive enthusiasts to share our trials, tribulations, and experiences. I have had several customers tell me of their disappointment in the inability to participate in these events, and they understand that once the opportunity
presents itself to partake in the revelry, it probably will not be the same. All throughout the industry personal interaction is increasingly becoming less and less. Automotive dealers are offering “no contact” services, for both repairs and vehicle sales. Detailing companies are coming to your home or office, and mobile repair companies are increasingly entering the market. Our expanded use of technology to stay connected also changes the automotive landscape. I know of a few car clubs that are holding virtual meetings, using the Microsoft Teams, GoToMeeting, or Zoom platforms, to keep up with what is going on and to continue some sort of business as usual. While there
are some pretty intense changes taking place in the world around us, there is still a need, and a desire, for the automobile. The basic form of transportation for some, and a true love for others, it is that independence that a car provides, a “distance” if you will, which will continue to bring us together. ■ Article by Gene Harris of Jim Miles Garage, LLC For more information, please visit www. jimmilesgarage.com Have a question or topic idea for Garage Talk? n May we ran a Cover Car Contest for the opportunity to be featured within and on the Cover of the June AutoUrge issue. Plus, the winner received a Remote Start from The Car Audio Shop. We had a great selection of vehicles entered and in fact, we look forward to contacting some of them for a future Readers’ Ride or even a feature! Thank you to ALL that submitted and voted! After a few weeks of voting via Facebook “Likes” on our FB page, we had a winner. It came down to the final hour to determine the winner, as it was a close battle. Enjoy the winner’s feature and we have also included a short bio on the 2nd and 3rd place entries.
---Winner--Dustin Mazzio’s of St. Louis, MO 1991 Nissan Skyline GT-R In May of 2017, Dustin purchased his car bone stock in AH3 Cherry Red Pearl. With the help of many friends and local shops, he set out to slowly build his car into a gorgeous show car that was also built for the back roads. Dustin wants to thank all those that played a part to get the car where it is today. Dustin describes to us: “This car is more than just a vehicle - it’s a tool that has brought people together. The St. Louis Car Scene is full of highly talented, incredibly caring, and all-around great people. This car was a ticket into that world, and I highly encourage all enthusiasts to patronize some of our great local small businesses and get to know the wonderful people in this car scene. Not only do I now have a strong network of subject matter experts I can count on - but I have made lifelong friends through building this car. That alone makes every penny spent on the automotive hobby worth it. Derek and Chris at AEP have put in countless hours in fixing quirks and glitches that come with a 25+year-old vehicle. Ahmed at Habibi Motorsports helped get the car legal and ready for inspection. Zach at Enthusiast Motorsports gave us a slick new tint. Steve-O at St. Louis Auto Detail made sure the car was ready for vinyl wrap and meticulously detailed and ceramic coated. Cory at Lucky Omen Garage has provided numerous tools and help whenever it is needed. Paul at Diode Dynamics helped source all the necessary LED bulbs needed to convert this car into this century.” Continued on next page.

Dustin shared with us a little history regarding the GT-R. “The R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R received the name “Godzilla” in the early 90s for its dominant racing heritage. In the All Japan Touring Car Championship, the Group A R32 Skyline was literally unbeatable – winning 29 races from 29 starts across four seasons of total dominance. It was one of the most advanced cars of its time, with auto-folding mirrors, one-touch electric windows, all-wheel steering and RWD-biased allwheel drive that had the ability to transfer up to 50% of power to the front wheels when needed. The car also only came in Right Hand Drive as it was only ever sold to the Japanese and Australian markets and was not available in the US until 2014 under the 25-year import law.”
When asked about his favorite thing about his car, Dustin remarked “I love the drivability of this car. It’s so raw, yet nimble. At a little over 300 horsepower, it’s not a high powered muscle car but is incredibly maneuverable and well planted. The clutch is way more forgiving than a Ferrari or a Lamborghini but has much more feeling than a Camaro or a Mustang. It is definitely a driver’s car and an absolute blast on the backroads. You also cannot beat the sound of the twin turbos spooling up and the GT-R’s unique “pew” sound of the wastegate at each shift. If happiness was measured in smiles-per-gallon, the R32 must be one of the most cheerfully efficient vehicles out there.” ■

Prevent the Headaches of Reassembly
T
his month I want to talk about something that is near and dear to me and keeps the work we do efficient and at a high standard. You guessed it, organization…. No matter what I write, or what classes I teach, or what shop I have been in, keeping everything organized and safely stored when removing parts from a vehicle is extremely important. So here are a few things we do in-house that maybe you can use to help your projects along and prevent the future headaches of trying to figure out where things go when it comes time to put it back together. The first thing is plastic shelves and panel racks. I prefer the plastic ones because we are removing interior panels that we absolutely do not want to be damaged and metal ends can scratch plastic and leather very easily. They are cheap and easily stored if you do not use them a lot. However, keeping all panels, seats, and products up off the floor and organized together can save a lot of time (and yes, money, some are VERY expensive to replace). Also, for you shop guys, if you do multiple vehicles, don’t mix them up and keep things separated for each vehicle. Next is baggies and bins for small parts. We use a lot of Ziplock
14
AutoUrge
JUN 2020
mobile electronics bags and also craft bins that close and lock (to prevent accidents) for all the small parts, clips, and other fasteners we remove so that the vehicle can go back together exactly as the manufacturer intended. Marking with a sharpie on the baggies and a dry erase marker on the bins ensures each part is labeled and will not be mixed up and going in the wrong place. I know this isn’t exactly electronics-related but it is a very important part of our daily job and I thought maybe it might help someone else out on their project(s). For a very small investment, you can keep everything much safer and organized and ensure everything will go back the way it was intended. I hope everyone is staying safe and using any extra time to get those rides ready for the eventual shows. Hope to see you there. ■ Thank you for reading, Brandon Green/ Owner The Car Audio Shop MECP Master Certified Technician www.thecaraudioshop.co Have a question or topic idea for Mobile Electronics? ast month we began a NEW feature of highlighting a past feature car and sharing never before published photos and/or new photos. This month we look back at the June 2018 issue and admire this stunning Rosso Andromeda Red 2004 Lamborghini Murcielago—owned locally by Naseer Ahmad. Naseer, an Army veteran, is no stranger to fast machines since his day job is an airline pilot and Helicopter Flight Instructor for Metro Air Support. In fact, last summer he received an ultra-rare opportunity to photograph his car in front of the Air Force F-22 Raptor at the Air Show. ith school out for the summer, many families are planning driving vacations. Adding pre-trip auto care to road trip plans lessens the chance of a roadside breakdown for all motorists and is even more important for those driving older vehicles, says the Car Care Council.
According to AAA roadside data, “vehicles 10 years and older are twice as likely to be stranded at the roadside, and four times more likely to require a tow.” The findings also show that the top reasons for requiring a tow are battery and electrical systems issues (23 percent), engine cooling system failures (11 percent), and tire damage that cannot be repaired or replaced at the roadside (10 percent). “The Car Care Council urges all drivers to make sure their vehicles are road-trip ready to minimize the chance of car trouble away from home,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “With the average vehicle age exceeding 11.5 years and the odds of a roadside breakdown much greater for those with older vehicles, a pre-trip vehicle inspection is especially important to help ensure a stress-free journey.” The non-profit Car Care Council recommends a vehicle check prior to departure to avoid the hassle and unexpected expense of car trouble away from home, including: Check the battery and replace if necessary. Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging. Excessive heat and overcharging shortens the life of a battery. Check the HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) system as proper cooling performance is critical for interior comfort. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation. The Car Care Council also recommends inspecting the brake system, performing a tune-up, checking and restocking the emergency kit, and fully charging cell phones before leaving home. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance, and repair to consumers. arque Smith of Wildwood, MO is no stranger to rare and/or collector edition cars. He comes from a family that loves cars and his father was a GM Service Instructor. Cars were a way of life growing up for Marque. In fact, he also owns a 1986 IROC-Z Camaro. Marque searched a long time for this car. Then 5 years ago he found it at a Ford dealer of all places, in the back of the building actually. GM only made 1677 convertible, V8, 45th Anniversary Camaros and we agree with Marque, “It is one of the best looking special edition packages GM has made”. The car is equipped with an automatic transmission and from the factory, the car had 426hp from the 6.2 L V8. The 45th Anniversary trim package includes the Carbon Flash Metallic paint, special wheels, special seats, H.U.D., unique stripes, and emblems. Like a lot of us, that wasn’t enough. Marque wanted to enhance the car’s appearance and performance while maintaining the ability to put it back

These enhancements included: Texas Speed long tube headers, Magnaflow Exhaust, Airraid COI, 20” MRR Z28 wheels and SLP Coil Overs. He then added various interior upgrades and embossed and extended the hood stripes. When asked his favorite thing about his car, he replied “The color, stripes, and being topless. And of course the power and sound.” We enjoyed learning more about Marque’s car. Visit AutoUrge.com for all the photos Marque sent us. Don’t wait for us to find you, especially now. What is the history/background of the club? The Original Corvette Club (OCC) of St. Louis was founded on July 21, 1979 - when the Corvette was still being assembled in the St. Louis plant at Natural Bridge Avenue and Union Boulevard. Incorporated in the state of Missouri March 28th, 1980. What need does the club fill in our area? The purpose of the club shall be to encourage ownership and to foster interest in the Corvette sports car; to encourage planned trips, social activities charities events for club members; and to promote and encourage careful and skillful motor vehicle operations on public thoroughfares Corvette owners who share and appreciate the same things tend to pull toward one another. This is understandable because they have a mutual interest in America’s number 1 sports car, the “Corvette”. That tendency is particularly noticeable in groups during everyday life. Instead of taking a chance on drifting together from time to time, individuals organize into formal groups called clubs. One such club is the Original Corvette Club (OCC), which has a mutual meeting place, a set date and time. How often do you meet? We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm at Jilly’s Café and Steakhouse 1630 Gravois Road Does your club/org have a main event each year? We have numerous events. Our club members participate in and enjoy many local, civic, charitable, and just plain fun activities all year long. Over the course of each year, we participate in several civic and school parades, car shows, fun runs (winery runs, scavenger hunts, poker runs, etc.). We plan several trips each year to various locations that interest our members, being on the open road is the fun part and socializing with other members, also, other corvette clubs around the country.
