What if “architecture collides with music as a connector to revitalize an underutilized district in Shum Wan Temporary Industrial Hong Kong?”
An experimental project challenges capitalist-driven urbanization. by reimagining Shum Wan as a harmonious space where architecture, music, and cultural heritage connect generations and enrich community life.
Temporary Shum Wan Industrial District .Once a vibrant center for fishermen and industrial workers, the district now faces numerous challenges, including unregulated settlements, unlicensed food establishments, inadequate sanitation, and a lack of waste management. Despite its current state, the site holds valuable remnants of Hong Kong’s history, with deep-rooted ties to traditional fishing villages and the legacy of its industrial working class, both of which are at risk of being lost amid a declining craftsman industry. Simultaneously, Hong Kong’s underground music scene faces significant challenges, struggling to secure affordable venues and cultivate connections within the local community.
This project proposes an adaptive reuse approach, repurposing existing materials and structures on-site to establish spaces for collaborative workshops, music festivals, pop-up events, and cultural programming. By transforming Shum Wan into a dynamic cultural hub, the project seeks to foster social cohesion, preserve the district’s historical identity, and draw public attention to the endangered craftsman trades. Through this reimagined use of space, the project aspires to reveal the site's overlooked cultural significance, promoting awareness and active engagement with Hong Kong’s heritage.
This project envisions Shum Wan Temporary Industrial District as a dynamic cultural center, where music, craftsmanship, and communal activities foster intergenerational connection and cultural preservation. By revitalizing Shum Wan’s industrial landscape with spaces that cater to both artistic expression and traditional crafts, the design prevents isolation and ensures that Shum Wan remains an inclusive, supportive space for generations to come. Through the adaptive reuse of bamboo, affordable creative spaces, and innovative community programming, Shum Wan transforms from a neglected site into a thriving community where young and old find meaning, connection, and shared purpose. Ultimately, this project preserves Shum Wan’s historical identity while allowing the district to grow as a place of continued cultural exchange. By fostering a space where each generation can connect and contribute, the design ensures that Shum Wan becomes an active part of Hong Kong’s community fabric, where cultural legacy and community bonds strengthen, enriching the city’s heritage for years to come.

The Limitless delicately brings in nature to provide a fresh and healing environment for the local artists, so as to increase the inhabitants quality of life. Furthermore , it was obligated to awaken the value of craftsmanship in this advanced world by integrating the exhibition spaces , business opportunities in the site. The master plan is formed with an apartment , fashion academy and pottery manufacturing. These buildings surround the inverted exhibition factory .
The artists are working and living with this heritage - the forgotten site. To emphasize on the unremembered, the buildings are structured with avant-garde tectonics (the extravagant roof canopy and truss facade ) as a principle - “ Creativity should be bold and limitless.” The architectural reference to the Dutch pavilion. The scheme arranges the natural in between the main working spaces. At ground level it allows for visibility and accessibility, whilst the third level, the “nature” and cultural events populate in between the fashion academy and pottery manufacturing, fabric dying workshops .It exists as a monumental multi-level park that takes on the character of a happening. The evolving technique makes the fast fashion industry grow. Fast Fashion forms a toxic system of overproduction and consumption, and it has made fashion one of the world’s largest polluters. Fast fashion’s negative impact includes using cheap, toxic textile dyes—making the fashion industry one of the largest polluters of clean water globally, right up there with agriculture. But even “natural” fabrics can be a problem at the scale fast fashion demands. Conventional cotton requires enormous amounts of water and pesticides in India and China. This results in drought risks and creates extreme stress on water basins and competition for resources between companies and local communities.
Introducing Kombucha Flab, a unique concept that combines a Kombucha Brewery Factory and Sewing Cafe. At Kombucha Flab, we utilize the waste produced during the Kombucha fermentation process, known as SCOBY, to create fashion products through sewing with old clothes donated by the community in the District Docklands. The clothes off cut will send to textile brick maker space to turn the off cuts to bricks , or insulation in the building.See This initiative serves as an activism to promote biodegradable fashion and address the excessive local fast fashion industry.
By repurposing materials and encouraging sustainable practices, Kombucha Flab contributes to reducing textile waste and fostering a culture of environmental consciousness within the community. Join us in our mission to promote eco-friendly fashion and make a positive impact on our environment.
The Biodegradable “Fast Fashion”
Kombucha SCOBYs primarily consist of cellulose, a carbohydrate that is indigestible for humans. Nevertheless, they contain minute quantities of essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and organic acids, which are produced during the fermentation process. These nutrients comprise vitamin C, various B vitamins, acetic acid, lactic acid, and gluconic acid. Furthermore, it is pertinent to highlight that once discarded, SCOBY leather undergoes natural decomposition, ultimately enriching the soil with valuable nutrients. This biodegradable attribute distinguishes it from materials like cotton, which may persist in landfills indefinitely without undergoing decomposition.
The End Of life Of Scoby Ceiling
Users can detach the ceiling SCOBY after 1-5 years, once it begins to partially dissolve. They can then remove degraded portions and replace them with new sections using the folding double shaft module system.
Combining biodegradable expanded cork board and recycled textile bricks and increase the wall thickness to 300mm between the vertical garden and the sewing workshop to reduce the hot and cold transmission. S02 Insulation
