HOME&LIFE Time for Spring Cleaning!
Among the many ‘rites of spring’ there are perhaps few as satisfying as throwing open the windows and cleaning the house top to bottom. After a cold, dark winter of closed windows, muddy boots, wood-burning stoves, dust and dander, spring cleaning signifies the return of warmer weather and spending time outside. Here are a few tips to help you freshen your home.
• A good airing will reduce the allergens and
germs in mattresses, even if you can’t lug them outside. Sprinkling baking soda on a mattress, letting it sit a short time, then vacuuming it off can freshen it too.
• When dusting pay special attention to switch
plates and the outside edges of doors, where people tend to grab.
• When
washing bed linens, wash them in order of what goes on the bed first. If you’re switching over to lighter quilts, wash the winter bedding before putting it away, because moths and other insects are attracted to body oil, perspiration and perfume.
• When
cleaning heavy drapes, use the

upholstery attachment on your vacuum or have them dry-cleaned; light drapes can go in the dryer on the fluff cycle with a dryer sheet. Wipe wooden blinds with a damp cloth. Warm water mixed with mild dishwashing liquid good for most metal and vinyl blinds.

and shampooing carpets, and sweeping and mopping floors can make living spaces feel fresh. Don’t forget to dust those lamps, countertops, books and shelves first!
There are any number of great natural cleaning products on the market that are safe for people, pets and the environment. Brands like Seventh Generation and Mrs. Meyers produce all-purpose cleaners, glass and surface cleaners, shower cleaners, tub and tile cleaners, furniture polish and more. Sometimes, however, the purest, simplest, most effective cleaners are items you already have in the house! Lemon juice and vinegar are great for cleaning windows and cutting through grease, and vinegar is useful for preventing mold formation. Ordinary table salt or sea salt is great for scrubbing and scouring touch dirt and grime. And baking soda is fabulous for scrubbing, scouring, cleaning and deodorizing.

PET TIP Veterinary Rehabilitation...
Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital
Veterinary Rehabilitation is Coming to Nanaimo The team at Applecross Veterinary Hospital is thrilled to announce the opening of the Nanaimo Animal Rehabilitation Center next door to our clinic. Our dedication to quality veterinary medicine will be extending into physical rehabilitation
and acupuncture. Stay tuned for our opening date, but we will be starting to see patients very soon!
What is animal rehabilitation? Animal rehabilitation is the veterinary equivalent of human physiotherapy. Certified rehabilitation practitioners are skilled in manual therapies; including massage, controlled stretching and therapeutic exercises. With the use of treadmills, physioballs, wobble boards, cavaletti poles, among many other tools, rehabilitation practitioners are able to help their patients build up strength and heal their injuries in a controlled environment. The use of other modalities; such as therapeutic laser, electrical stimulation and therapeutic ultrasound; aid in providing pain relief and speeding up recovery. This may sound like the veterinarians and their team will just spend their day playing with animals and fancy toys. Well that’s not all wrong. It is so gratifying to work with our patients and see the remarkable improvements that they can make during their rehabilitation. Animals love coming for their rehabilitation sessions. What’s not to love? Each session starts with warm compress and massage to work out the tight muscles and stiff joints. The animals then get to have some fun going through obstacle courses, challenging themselves on physioballs and wobble

Festival Nanaimo turns 2 and in one year it has grown to over 60 fun-filled activities happening in Nanaimo from March 1 - April 3, 2016. It is not your typical festival model because it happens over 33 days with a host of activities showcasing Nanaimo, including: Festival Nanaimo Signature events, concerts, visual art, exhibits, dance, runs, walks, pub crawls, St. Paddy’s Day celebrations, cycling tours, a boat show, Dine-Abouts, Whisky tasting, Spring Break activities, Easter weekend events, a Nanaimo Bar Sunday on March 20th and PirateFest and the 1st Nanaimo Food Truck Festival on April 2. Check out all the Festival Nanaimo events at www.festivalnanaimo.com One of Signature Events for Festival Nanaimo this year is the world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra big band coming to Nanaimo for two shows. Kerilie McDowall shared her thoughts on this internationally acclaimed band. As a guitarist and a genuine jazz aficionado, some of my happiest childhood memories resurfaced when I heard that the world famous swing big band, the renowned Glenn Miller Orchestra, will perform at The Port Theatre on March 21st and 22nd at 7:30 pm as Signature Events at this year’s Festival Nanaimo. For the past
15 years I have volunteered as a Vancouver Island jazz and improvised music radio/ podcast host and producer at CHLY 101.7 FM. Over the years I have presented many thousands of recordings to the public and I strongly feel that the music of the Glenn Miller Orchestra is still, after seven decades, the type of timeless music that can’t be surpassed.
With over 1700 songs and 300 performances per year delighting global audiences for six decades, the current Glenn Miller Orchestra band is led by vocalist/bandleader Nick Hischler. This band is in high demand with audiences of all ages, and is a favourite amongst musicians. Miller died in 1944. Miller’s estate reinstated the band in 1956 and The Glenn Miller Orchestra is now returning once again to our proud city. The orchestra performed in Nanaimo in 1962 with former bandleader Tex Beneke. Other past Glenn Miller Orchestra bandleaders within the past decades include: Buddy DeFranco, Buddy Morrow, Jimmy Henderson and Dick Gerhart. Historically, trombonist Glenn Miller became the musical director for Tommy Dorsey’s band with brother Jimmy Dorsey in 1934. Only later did Miller become a bandleader of his own orchestra. The original 1937 Glenn Miller Orchestra was unsuccessful, but in 1939, the band’s popularity became enormous with multiple hit records and tremendous box office sales. In
1941 the band had more top song hits in one year than anybody in the history of the recording industry - popular and beloved bandleader, composer, and trombonist Glenn Miller and his Glenn Miller Orchestra were the #1 top dance band in the USA.
For myself, thinking of Miller is a blast from the past. Thoughts of the Glenn Miller Orchestra take me back to happy days spent as a seven year old child on my father’s speedboat in Kingston, Ontario in the early 1970’s. My father would bring out his 8 track tapes and instruct me to choose my favourite songs
from his music collection to play on the boat while we cruised around the Thousand Islands in Ontario. I always chose Glenn Miller over Elvis from my Dad’s music collection because I was absolutely in love with the ecstatic and fun melodies and popular smash swing hits like In the Mood, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Tuxedo Junction, The American Patrol, A String of Pearls and the big band’s popular theme song Moonlight Serenade. I cannot wait to hear this world famous big band in concert LIVE in Nanaimo! By Kerilie McDowall

A Helpful Print Hint I get many clients coming in that have dried out inkjet cartridges. These little guys can get pretty expensive and you want to use every drop of ink they have in them before replacing them. Here is a great hint to keep them going after they have dried out. In a small tea saucer put in very hot water about a ¼ inch deep or so and squirt some window cleaner in the water, one or two squirts will do. Now remove the dried cartridge and put the business end into the hot water until the ink starts to show in the water, about a minute or two, then remove it from the water and dab it on a paper towel, make sure you dab not rub. You will see some ink on the paper towel. When the cartridge is no longer wet with water place it back in the printer. You now have a usable cartridge again. Good luck and happy printing. YOUR FITNESS NOW Meal Prep to a Healthier “You”
I am sure by now you have heard about the benefits of taking on a meal prep routine. This type of planning can mean cooking all of your food for the week. Or it could also mean preparing and planning what you would like to eat for your breakfast, snacks, lunches and dinners.
Here are some great reasons why I believe it can be beneficial to start Meal Prepping:
Personal training
u Cut down the costs of your grocery bill. Fewer grocery
store visits also means less unnecessary purchases. Ever grab extra items that aren’t on your list….no me either. u Lest trips to the store means less trips to the gas station too! u If you are starting a new healthy regime it’s easier to stay on track. u Saves you huge amounts of time. If you think about much time day to day you spend preparing food or gathering food. You spend at the very least 45 minutes daily. So that’s approximately 5¼ hours a week. If you spend 3 of those hours (I am being generous with that) planning and preparing your food in one day you are actually utilizing your time more efficiently. We have now established how meal prepping can actually save you time, money and your health. I know I like saving money and time and especially your health!
Here are some easy tips and tricks to meal prepping for a beginner:
u Plan out what you would like to eat for the week and
make a list. Only buy what’s on the list. Include what you would like to have for snacks, dinners, lunches, breakfast, etc. u Sunday is a great day to cook and prepare your meals. Plan to get up early and have it all done before 10am so you can get out and enjoy the day. u You can have many things going at once. I typically cook
something on the stove top with 2-4 dishes in the oven.
u Prepare veggies to be cooked throughout the week. Pre-
chop items so they are ready to go. If you don’t already utilize meal prepping I encourage you to just try it this month. See how this can encourage healthier eating habits and save you time and money. Have a happy and healthy month!
