HOME&LIFE Decorating Your Home for the Holidays

We all know the Christmas holidays can be an expensive time of year. Whether it’s giftgiving, get togethers or holiday travel, the costs can quickly add up. That’s why it’s good to know that decorating your home for the season doesn’t have to be expensive. By bringing the beauty of the outdoors in and using what you already have around, eyecatching and festive arrangements can be made in minutes for very little or no money at all. Here are a few ideas to help you get started. • shop your yard! Pine tree branches, red berries and rose hips are easy to find at this time of year and add colour and scent to your home. Holly branches too are the quintessential holiday decor! Whether arranged into wreaths, stuck into vases or window boxes or tied with a pretty ribbon to make a swag for your door, there are no limits to the delightful ways greenery can add a seasonal touch to your home

• in the same vein, pinecones are naturally beautiful and look great with greenery or on their own. Dip them in a bit of gold paint, glue and glitter, or spray with artificial snow for a particularly festive look

• make a beautiful table centrepiece by removing the core from an apple and placing a candle inside. Or place a fresh wreath of greenery on the table, put a pretty bowl in the middle and fill it with plump red apples or pomegranates • put out bowls of holiday candy in pretty stemmed glassware to beautiful effect! • fill a glass vase or hurricane lamp with beautifully coloured monochromatic Christmas ornaments for a touch of elegance • popcorn garlands and paper snowflakes made with the kids are fun and attractive! Hang the snowflakes at different heights using string or fishing wire and you’ll have your own snowfall! • suspend shimmery decorations like silver baubles and ribbons from a chandelier: when the lights are on the effect will be stunning

Light Up the Night Event: new event to Downtown Duncan! Celebrate the Winter Solstice and the return of longer days at ‘Light Up the Night’. Glowstick giveaways, Christmas carols, shops open late and a professional Fireshow finale by Vesta Entertainment on City Square stage. The fun gets started in Downtown Duncan 6 pm. FMI downtownduncan.ca or 250.715.1700 Live Music: ‘Gals Who Write Songs’ is a fun musical evening at the Duncan Showroom featuring Beverley McKeen and 3 singer/songwriters

From Vancouver Island, Canada, Country Singer/Songwriter Beth Marie Anderson has accomplished much in her young years. She has had several of her songs cut by artists all over North America, including Grand Ole Opry Performer Sherry Lynn, and has had song holds with major label artists including LeAnn Rimes, Sarah Evans & Pam Tillis. Beth has recorded three albums in Nashville and was nominated for multiple awards in B.C including “Song of The Year” at the Vancouver Island Music Awards in 2012, “Female Vocalist Of The Year” at the 2nd Annual Barebones Music Awards in 2013, and “Album of The Year’ with the British Columbia Country Music Awards, 2015. Beth has shared the stage with Canadian Superstars such as Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Johnny Reid, Michelle Wright, Patricia Conroy, Trooper, Jessie Farrell, and English/US hit songwriter Roger Cook. Beth was selected as the only Canadian ‘Emerging Artist’ at Nashville’s 2013 CMA Fan Fair where she did four days of 8 hour meet & greets, saw over 3,000 new fans and performed at select venues including the legendary Bluebird Café. In her younger years Beth was a lead in the Musical ‘Honk Jr’ with Bard To Broadway, sung in the chorus of many Operatic Productions with the Vancouver Island Opera Company including ‘La Boheme’ and Die Fledermaus, and other musicals through the Echo Players Theatre Company. One of Beth’s passions is teaching and inspiring youth, so in 2013 she started speaking at elementary, middle and high school kids about her journey, how being unique is a blessing, and inspiring them to dream big and chase their dreams through life’s obstacles. In 2014 Beth was selected to be the Music Director at the Tim Horton’s Children’s Camp in Kentucky (for under privileged children) for 4 months. Beth taught guitar, vocals, mandolin, drums and recorded music with the kids. Also in 2014, Beth was selected as an International Finalist in the ‘NewSong International Songwriting Competition’, beating out thousands of Artists all around the world for 1 of the 10 spots. 2015 has been a whirlwind full of opportunity for this young singersongwriter. Beth’s song ‘Sunday

Shoes’ was the lead radio single for Canadian artist, Alessia Cohle, Beth received FACTOR funding to record music in the spring, and was again selected as the only Canadian Emerging Artist at the CMA Fan Fair in Nashville this past June. Beth had a busy summer showcasing at the SML Songwriting Festival in Virginia, recording and releasing her third studio album in Nashville, and writing songs for her upcoming Christmas Album in Winter 2016. Beth was thrilled to be selected in the ‘Unsigned Only’ Artist Competition (seeking the greatest unsigned act in North America) and made her way to Semi Finalist. Also this year Beth was selected to showcase during CCMA Week in Halifax, was nominated for ‘Album of The Year’ at the 2015 BCCMA Awards, and was selected to perform at the BCCMA Awards in Vancouver. Her latest adventure for 2015 will be her 16 date Christmas Tour of Vancouver Island along side the release of her Radio Christmas Single, The First Noel.

Christmas...

I am so excited to be touring Vancouver Island with my Christmas Concert! I love everything about Christmas ... the lights, the smells, picking out treasures for your family and friends, the music, the food, boots, scarves, I could go on and on. Writing Christmas music is one of my favourite things! I wrote my first Christmas song in 2011 (Merry Christmas To Me) and it was played on Apple Radio, was placed on 2 CD compilations for our troops - one Canadian, one American, and was recorded by Sherry Lynn, a Country Artist from the US who has performed at the Grand Ole Opry and sings with Crystal Gale (Loretta Lynn’s Sister). It was such a success over that year and 2012 that I decided to try my hand at writing more holiday songs and now have 12 originals in my catalogue. I had the chance to pitch one of my originals to Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood a few months ago which was an awesome experience, hopefully they like it and want to record it for their 2016 album! After selling out of my Christmas Shows in my home town of Qualicum Beach I decided to take the show on the road. I am thrilled to be playing in Duncan, I’ve never played there before and I’ve heard there are some amazing music supporters there and can’t wait to meet them at my show! I love creating a “living room” vibe at my concerts where you can feel apart of the music and magic. I perform songs that the audience sings along to, share stories behind my original songs and play classic holiday songs to get everyone into the Christmas Spirit. I am so excited to be sharing the stage with Darcy Philips who spends most of his time touring with Jann Arden when he isn’t teaching or writing scores for film and tv.

DEBT CONSOLIDATION VS. DEBT SETTLEMENT I am often contacted by clients wanting to know the difference between Debt Consolidation and Debt Settlement. In today’s column, we will explore the difference between the two: Debt Consolidation can often be an excellent way for a person, carrying too much unsecured debt, i.e., credit cards, lines of credit, overdraft, bills, student loans, etc. to consolidate all of their debt into one comfortable monthly payment, usually at a much lower interest rate than the current debt. Instead of open, revolving debt, this loan is structured into one fixed payment over a specific period of time. This loan pays off all the existing debt and significantly alters cash flow in a positive way and allows for much easier budgeting on a monthly basis. It is advisable, that once this loan is in place, all but one credit card is cancelled along with the lines of credit. It is also recommended that his person attend Credit Counselling to avoid the trap of falling back into the same behavior patterns that created the problem in the first place. To qualify for this type of loan, one must have excellent credit and the income to qualify to make the monthly payment, among other requirements. It is not unusual to have the bank ask for collateral (car, motorhome, second mortgage) to secure this debt. A co-signer may also be required. If a person does not qualify for Debt Consolidation, then Debt Settlement may be an option to consider. In Debt Settlement, a Debt Consultant can make an offer to settle all of the unsecured debt, through a Trustee in Bankruptcy, to reduce all of the debt into one low monthly payment, at zero percent interest. This offer can be as low as twenty cents on the dollar, depending on the person’s assets, income and liabilities. This

offer is called a Consumer Proposal and is an alternative to Bankruptcy. A Consumer Proposal has a negative effect on the Credit Bureau whereas a Consolidation Loan does not. It is advisable that a person explore all of their options before deciding which option is best for them. Christopher Grew is a Debt Consultant serving families and businesses on Southern Vancouver Island.

Holiday Travel and Road Safety ‘Tis the season for friends and family to gather together for Christmas cheer. The roads are busy, the weather often challenging and the hours dark. But a little preparation before making your car trip can help ensure a safe arrival and happy holidays. As much as possible make sure your vehicle is roadready before heading out. Have the proper tires on for where you are heading and keep your gas tank at least half full at all times. Check the forecast and road conditions before you go and hold off travelling for a day or two if the conditions are dangerous and your trip is not timesensitive. When you do head out be sure to tell someone where you are going and the route you are taking. Have a safety kit with you in the car. This can be homemade and should include such items as energy bars/snacks, a fresh supply of water in a plastic bottle, and any necessary medications.

inside a deep tin can. Don’t forget some matches or a lighter! If you have a cell phone make sure it is charged before you go. And a windup flashlight is always a good idea if you have one handy. If you do encounter bad weather and get stranded far from help it’s considered safest to stay in your vehicle: your vehicle offers shelter from the elements and it’s easy to get disoriented in a storm. As much as possible use the candle and your extra clothes to stay warm: don’t run your car continuously and make sure your tailpipe isn’t blocked by snow. Be sure to keep a window open a tiny bit for fresh air. For more winter driving tips visit the Canada Safety Council website. Happy and safe holidays!

Also a supply of extra socks/hats/mitts, a blanket or sleeping bag, and a small candle like a tea light

YOUR FITNESS NOW How to get started on a fitness journey when you are really unfit. I didn’t start out being fit. I knew that I wanted to start exercising but just couldn’t seem to muster up the strength to start in the beginning. I couldn’t tell you how many times I would tell myself “today is the day” and then tell myself in the next sentence “tomorrow is the day!” As a young adult didn’t really seem to me as gratifying in anyway… Like who would want to get sweaty and tired for really nothing. (obviously not know ing the endless benefits) Here are some simple tips on how to start your daily exercise habits, no previous experience necessary:

1. Start Small

No need to commit yourself to 6 day a week regime with 2 hour workouts if you haven’t trained in a while, if ever. It could be a small gym routine online (I have a youtube account under Erin Crawford with plenty of FREE at home workouts with no equipment necessary), some stretching, yoga or a small walk in the great outdoors. Doesn’t really matter for how long you commit yourself as long as you try to set a daily habit. Could only be 5 minutes.

2. Comfortable workout clothes

It’s not necessary to get tons of workout gear and spend a ton of cash. Just wear some comfortable clothes to workout in. Every evening before you go to bed, lay out your workout gear to either bring with you to work, or put on as soon as you get up in the morning. I find it to start ideal to workout in the morning so nothing mid day that can mess with you establishing your new habits.

4. Listen to your favorite music to pump you up!

Nothing like some great beats to workout to or to get you into the mood of training. It sometimes seems like the time flies by before you know it. Happy Holidays From Body Tempo Health and Fitness Erin Crawford, Owner Body Tempo He alth and Fitness Inc. Personal r Expert and Lifestyle Coach Pre and Postnatal Training Specialist

10 WEEK CHALLENGE START DATE: JANUARY 12TH, 2016 Fun, fat burning and strength building workouts for all fitness levels from advanced to beginner. Only 10 participants in this challenge. Homework assigned - weekly workouts to continue success out of class.

3. Record in a workout log

After or during each workout write down what you did. Somethings could include, how you felt that day, exercises, weight lifted in each exercise, time of day, how long you trained for. Taking progress photos are helpful too. Its so crazy how you can change and not even notice it in the mir ror. Be measureable and accountable. There are nothing like facts to keep you on track.

*$100.00 deposit required towards your fees. Limit 10 participants per class.

As the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular Producer and Creator Katy BowenRoberts heads into her ninth season, she took a moment with us to reflect on the production and its journey thus far. “It feels like only yesterday that I was sitting cozied up by a wood burning fire with a pint of bitter, a few creative artistic friends, a napkin and pen and an outpouring of ideas that would soon become a seed for the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular”.

In a small country village outside Norfolk, England, Katy found herself dreaming up this singing and dancing extravaganza. “Audiences leave buzzing night after night and when I hear them cry, ‘my Christmas has officially begun’ I know that we have succeeded.” “Not a day goes by throughout the year that I don’t think about this show. Some

weeks I put in just a few hours. Others, the hours are endless and full of big decisions and exciting opportunities. There is always something to work on”, says Katy.

The show has grown over the past nine years into a production that is unique and has become a special holiday tradition for thousands of people annually across central Vancouver Island. This year’s singing and dancing spectacular includes hits by the Beach Boys, a Rock of Ages medley, Bobby Darrin songs, songs from Grease and Moulin Rouge, a Canadiana set as well as many more classical hits and Christmas favourites. Two weeks before the show opens, a cast of 14 professional singers, dancers and musicians will begin an intensive two-week rehearsal period in preparation for opening night. “It takes a year of planning to bring this show to the stage but it’s worth every minute” says creator, Katy. “Audiences leave buzzing night after night and when I hear them cry, ‘my Christmas has officially begun’ I know that we have succeeded.” The show is fast moving and colourful with dazzling costumes, lights and sequins. It takes you on an emotional journey through a wide variety of music and dance from rock & roll to Broadway, jazz and classical, all interwoven with touching readings and stories, including

an audience sing-along, a Christmas Quiz and youthful energy and talent to take you on a journey to another world. There are 17 performances in three different venues (The Cedar Community Hall, The Port Theatre and the Sid Williams Theatre) running from December 4th – December 20th. Please visit www.yellowpointchristmasspectacular.ca for more information. It’s quickly becoming a tradition for audiences across Vancouver Island. It is a favorite among bus tour groups, staff parties, family and friend reunions, and festive celebrations.

WO: You are such a ringer for Johnny Cash. Was it always that way even before you started doing your tribute to Johnny Cash: ‘Almost the Man in Black’? DJ: Yes , but more of a casual fan in past. When “Hurt “ first hit the radio I was blown away by it, such emotion. A few yrs later “Walk the line “the movie really made me aware of his story. Big fan from that point on. WO: What has been your highlight show so far? DJ: Trois Rivieres Quebec in 2012 still the biggest and most exciting, 10,000 plus people, quite the experience. There has been many great shows with as little as 30 people to hundreds. It’s the magic that happens , interaction with the crowd , it’s not necessarily the size of the crowd . WO: You did the voice tracks in “My Father and the Man in Black” the documentary about Johnny Cash his manager and the manager’s son – did you learn a lot about Johnny Cash working on the movie? DJ: Absolutely. The filmmaker Jonathan Holiff told me countless stories about Johnny Cash and his manager Saul Holiff. The film reveals good and bad events in Johnny’s journey, it was a great experience and was very fortunate to have been offered the role. WO: We hear acting has become an interest of yours...is that true? DJ: I’ve been working with Jacqui Kaese from Spotlight academy. There’s a lot more to acting than I ever thought. It’s been a lot of fun and perhaps I’ll pursue some more voiceover work in future and or possible roles. For now my focus is The Man in Black. WO: Your daughter Max is in plays with you sometimes. How does it feel as a dad to see one of your children take an interest in music? DJ: Max is amazing. She writes her own music and has raw natural talent. I hope the best for her in the biz . She has sang many times with us as June Carter. My hope is that she can have success in the biz , it’s a long hard road with far fewer venues than in past. Today it’s about online fame not necessarily touring... She’s already making a mark and is not even 17 so we’ll see.

A charming seasonal production is taking centre stage at Chemainus Theatre Festival this holiday season, and you’ll want to put it on your wish list! Based on the motion picture of the same name, ‘Elf: The Musical’ invites you to see the world through the eyes of a child. With it’s modern take on festive music, energetic dancing, physical comedy, and a charming story of finding the place where you belong, ‘Elf: The Musical’ is sure to please. When Buddy the Elf discovers he’s actually an ordinary human, he has just one wish – to discover his true identity! Off he goes on a solo journey from the North Pole to the big city. But finding his father, and reuniting his family, brings more surprises than a Christmas morning! As Buddy encounters skeptics, scrooges, and people on the naughty list, he realizes that his greater purpose is to bring back the holiday spirit! It will take every elfish trick he knows, maybe a miracle, and a lot of holiday cheer for his plan to work.

Don’t miss what is sure to be a family favourite this holiday season! Get your tickets now at chemainustheatrefestival.ca or call 250.246.9820
