Publisher’s Note
Well folks MMI - Mr. & Miss Model International is done. I am honored to have Whskywolf Oakleaf as our new Mr. MMI and JonelleDevonshire as our new Miss MMI. MMI 2018 was great, but truthfully, I am glad it is over, as I am every year, that is until the next one in 2019. So, readers who are mad about fashion and love the best challenges on the grid, keep an eye out around December for the MMI 2019 press release. You do not need to be a model to enter! I would like to take this opportunity to just let the good people of Second Life know that if I have an issue with anyone I promise that I will let that person know. My motto is dont listen to idle gossip, and if you feel there is an issue just ask me. When we listen to others and don't hear it from the person themselves then we are also sucked right into the crap and will become part of the gossip mongers. Also just know that I support all of Second Life unless given a reason not to, and if that is the case, the people or places involved will be left without a doubt on why I don't

Editor’s Note
I participated in a Facebook post last night that I picked up from a friend's feed in which participants were asked various questions about themselves to share. One of the questions was "what is your favorite season?" I immediately thought of springtime in the Shenandoah Valley and almost wrote spring as my answer. But then I remembered spring at 10,000 feet (3.04 km) above sea level in the high country of Colorado, where often residents endure four feet of snow until June, a VERY different picture all together, and I went eewww. So, ultimately, I ended up naming each of the seasons individually based upon my experiences in the states in which I've lived. LOL. But I do love spring in places like Shenandoah because like the picture at the top of this editorial letter, it's full of flowers, and green, and birds and it's like nothing you've ever seen, at least in my mind.

Also, on page 96, one of my favorite articles in this issue, is about my amazing, beautiful, talented SL mother, Her Majesty Queen MaiaCer Lysette. I have truly met no one else like her in ten years of being on SL. Please be sure to read Karin Deutmann's interview with her. As I was laying it out in the magazine, it had me singing in my head, "Mother Tell your children not to walk my way Tell your children not to hear my words What they mean What they say." Not because of mom, just because I love Danzig. LOL.

Many things in SL can be classified as "experiences." We even have experiences we can accept that make our avis travel, interact and receive things from other experiences - a very meta concept in and of itself! And one of the most interesting experiences on the grid, is the Mr. & Miss Model International (MMI) competition - a competition that has the word "Model" in the title but is not only for models, an experience that is not just one time, but spread out over several months. A multi-layer experience, some shared, some only for the contestants, and some only for the Owner/CEO and COO of MMI. Let's investigate the experience that defies easy definitions and pat classifications. THE SHARED EXPERIENCE: The MMI 2018 Final Show This show, the grand culmination of all the planning, competing, learning, and growing, took place on March 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. SLT. The contestants were: **Ladies**: HRHeather Jazztone (LeAnn) JonelleDevonshire Noreen Barineaux Sheva St.Claire **Men**: Herb Carnell Zakros WhskyWolf Oakleaf This was a fashion show and competition like no other. The pre-event music was provided by live singer Bubbles 'BuBu Quinn' Song (Trinity Ermintrood), a very talented singer with a gorgeous voice, and Brice Meda, DJ, who provided the

perfect music for the event itself. The set was built by Cyberdawg Foxclaw and Ava Jhamin and fit perfectly with the various rounds. There were 3 rounds formal wear, slumber party, and avant garde (picked from a box of items), and each contestant had a story for their looks - the script wasn't provided for them, and it allowed the contestants to show not only their styling prowess, but also the rationale behind each of their choices. The show truly defies description and so, a good look at the pictures would be far better to show just how unique and original this show,

and its contestants were. At the end of the three rounds, the winners were announced: Jonelle Devonshire became the new Miss MMI and Whsky Oakleaf the new Mr. MMI.

well. I made several new friends and enjoyed helping them when they asked for my opinions. It was a long road but, in the end, I enjoyed it very much. Whsky: MMI was a learning experience and very different from previous pageants in which I had participated. I met a lot of wonderful people and have made friends. Noreen: Stress - stress - stress BUT fun fun - fun! The stressful part was fighting the lag at shows and to keep the time limits between RL work and the time difference of being in Europe. The fun parts were

What was your experience with MMI like? Sheva: It was quite the learning experience for me in many ways. I really had no clue about pictures, and now I have grown so much in that area, and learned more about styling as
the different stylings, meeting new and interesting people, and learning a lot about myself. Jonelle: It was challenging and involved a lot of work. I enjoyed the time I spent as a contestant and loved meeting all the new models. I look forward to working with them all in the future. 2. What training and skills did you draw from to help you compete? Sheva: I think I used a lot of styling skills mostly I learned more about posing and photography as I went along, but with styling I was pushed to the limits. from the modeling schools I attended. But we also had workshops offered by MMI to help contestants with the contest. Noreen: The styling training with Ava, being self-confident about my abilities, and developing a better eye with each photograph I took.
3. What does it mean to you to have participated in the MMI competition? Sheva: I feel I have grown in so many ways. It was truly a learning experience, and taught me more about how to take criticism and to use the feedback to improve on specific problem areas.
Whsky: It means a lot to me. At first, I really hadn't given much thought Jonelle: I have graduated from four to participating, but my wife, Liberty modeling schools. I've had personal tutoring in style. I've done many runway Lighthouse along with Ava Jhamin, encouraged me to do it. I am very happy shows and castings, and I successfully styled my way into the Fantasy Angels. I I did. Jonelle: After my experience doing Miss Virtual World as a brand new model, I realized I had a lot of work to do to bring my skills up to the standards of the best models on the grid, and I wanted to join their ranks. I worked hard to improve my skill set in the interim two years, so I chose to start with a contest that I knew would be scrupulously fair. I was told by a friend about MMI, so I decided to join the contest with an eye toward
gaining more competition experience and some new friends. 4. What advice would you give next year's contestants? Sheva: My advice, don't do any other shows or castings during MMI. You will need the time to do this, it's not easy but it is so worth doing. Also, expect it to cost a bit. I can't even tell you how much I just spent to get things as close to perfect as I could. I don't regret anything."

Whsky: Manage your time efficiently. MMI is very time consuming and you have deadlines to meet every week. If you cannot multi-task, then make sure MMI is your focus if you wish to do well in it. Noreen: Never give up - ask other contestants and most of all: HAVE FUN with what you are doing! Jonelle: Don't go into a big competition until you are sure that you are really prepared. A vast inventory is necessary to compete because you never know what the challenges will require. Make sure your prims fit you impeccably every time. Above all, be in it for the right reason, which is not to win, necessarily. Winning is a great reward for all that hard work, but the best reason to enter is to learn, make friends and have fun. 5. Anything else you'd like to add? Sheva: I think all models should at least try to do MMI as it teaches you so much in a short amount of time. It can be daunting, but I am one who likes a challenge and it surely challenged me in so many ways ways I never had imagined that it would. I am so thrilled I was able to be in MMI till the final. Noreen: Already looking forward to joining next year! Jonelle: I would like to thank the MMI Judges and the L'Amour Production company for allowing me this opportunity to enhance my experience and have a great time. The contestants are not the only ones who contribute to and participate in this experience; this would not even be an experience if not for the creative vision of Owner/CEO Ava Jhamin and COO Cyberdawg Foxclaw. Their comments, concerns and advice for the event belong in the experience as well. Ava and Cy experiences: 1. What advice would you give on how contestants can prepare for MMI? Ava: Don't be complacent, come with everything you have, and commit to it. The winner of MMI is the one that is #1 committed and #2 eats, breathes, and sleeps MMI. A lot of people are under the impression that MMI is a way to do other competitions, for me MMI is the fairest and most challenging competition on the grid. Cy: First and foremost, know who you are as an individual and as a model. MMI is all about who the contestant is, and the better you can show that, the higher your likelihood of success. Study photo composition and learn to play with wind lights, because most challenges have a photo element, and contestants are not allowed to use any external photo editing software. Finally, be mentally prepared. Know your fashion genres, and above all, be prepared for what may at times feel like harsh critique from judges. If a contestant can't handle negative feedback, maybe they should rethink entering a competition that focuses on feedback - the good and the bad. 2. What are your pet peeves that can get a contestant disqualified, and why? Ava: I think for me it would be talking behind our backs, which I always find out about. We have the feedback for a reason with Mr. & Miss Model International. This is L’Amour Diversity Magazine | Issue 17, April 2018

the safe zone where a contestant can say whatever they want and it would be totally ok. When you're given and arena to vent, and you don't use that and instead go and talk bad about MMI to your friends and anyone that will listen, that pisses me off. I think also cheating in anyway, we had to deduct points right away for pictures that were photoshopped, the rules clearly state, no outside editing, that means photoshop, gimp, pixler, picmonkey, nothing. Also, for me to treat everyone with the utmost respect, if that contestants disrespect anyone, Cyberdawg Foxclaw, my COO, and I will not tolerate it - that's it. Cy: Well, things that can get a contestant disqualified aren't necessarily things I would consider pet peeves. People get disqualified for things like violating rules and displaying unprofessional and/or unethical behavior. Pet peeves, for me, are contestants not bothering to read the notecards provided, which give detailed instructions on what is required for each challenge, or for the competition in general. Another is not paying attention during rehearsal, which wastes everyone's time. And finally, the one that bugs me quite often is asking for a TP when the landmark is right there in their walk order notecard. 3. Can you give your perspective on what MMI teaches up-and-coming models on what it takes to be competent as a model? Ava: I think so much is taught, as far as how to play fair, be there for one another even if competing with one another. I think a lot is learned about styling, photography, walking, posing.

It teaches discipline so therefore one would come out of MMI more competent. Cy: MMI pushes contestants outside of their comfort zones. It's extremely demanding, with challenges that require them to create sets and to work together toward a goal. Even though it is a competition, contestants are encouraged to help each other, and seminars are offered at various times on things like photography and posing. It's a rigorous eight weeks, but at the end of it all, I think all contestants come out with a stronger sense of who they are as models and stylists, and a great deal more confidence in their abilities. 4. There may be people who say, "Why should I enter MMI - I've gone to school for modeling," or "I'm not really interested in modeling," or "I don't want to be a runway model," etc. What would you tell them they can gain from competing in contests like MMI? Ava: Your styling experience alone is worth it all which, if you're a stylist and not a model is imperative. I think this is schooling on steroids, and during feedback you can ask about what you did wrong and learn from it, and that is priceless. Cy: As I stated in my answer above, I think the most important thing they'll gain by participating in MMI is a very strong, confident sense of themselves. Competitions are certainly not for everyone, but if someone is looking for a serious challenge, they'll find it in MMI.

Out on the Grid For a lot of people on Second Life, having land or a place to call home isn't that important. For me as a Second Life business woman, it is very important to have a place for all my businesses and for myself. I came to be part of Phoenix Premium Estates by accident really, when one of my friends had to leave her full region estate and asked if I would like to take it over. I jumped at the chance as this land was considerably less expensive than the land I had at the time. I met SirEdward Slade, and it was a great chemistry as far as trust and knowing that I would be well taken care of on Phoenix Premium Estates. From the get-go, he was always there if you needed him, and he is still that way. He is just the best landlord I could ever want. I finally asked him if he would do an article for L'Amour Diversity, and of course being the gentleman he always is, he agreed. I sat down with SirEdward and talked to him about his life, business and all that is Phoenix Estates. Ava: What brought you to Second Life SirEdward? SirEdward: I was keen to see what this digital project would bring up. At the time SL started, it was a digital revolution!

Ava: What did you first do when you became part of the SL experience? SirEdward: Oh, I had to learn everything, and I tried hard. After having a short break due to frustration on all this new stuff, I decided to restart. In the end I learned to survive here. I began gambling on SL, but got bothered one day. So, I started to script small tools and things. I played around with some land and learned to design it. Ava: Tell me how did Phoenix Premium Estates came to be? SirEdward: Oh, that is a long story. In short: I worked for another estate as a salesman, but eventually, this company went out of business. After that, I met my business partner Maark Hastings. We had the same ideas on how to bring a good experience to people in SL and we started our "joint-venture," now known as "Phoenix Premium Estates." Ava: What kind of lands do you offer the citizens of Second Life? SirEdward: Basically, we do offer all kinds of land. From "Full Prim sim" to "Homestead sims," from smallest plot to nice Caribbean flavored islands, we can satisfy all needs. Our goal is to provide service, even after the buy. We don't get tired to show plots and sims until the client is happy with what they buy. Ava: Are there any restrictions on your land?

SirEdward: Linden Labs' TOS is the basic rule, of course. As everywhere in SL. On the sims featuring small Islands, we do not allow clubs or bigger businesses. This is to ensure lag-free living and a high level of privacy, so the residential land is kept separate. If someone wants to drive a club or a mall, we can sell them a plot on commercial rated sims as well. We are fighting all kinds of fraud, intolerance and disturbances. Ava: You have been here a very long time SirEdward, what changes have you seen in Second Life good or bad? SirEdward: Oh yes, I have been here for more than 10 years now, since 2008. Linden Labs ran to several steps of development, the first years were like the gold-rush in the older U.S. Everybody built, scripted and several well know places were founded, some are still there. At one time, RL companies tried to get a foothold in SL, but they didn't succeed in the way they wanted to. Nowadays SL slows down a bit. But still, new people are coming in to explore and to have fun. The club scene is very big in SL. On nearly every SIM you can find a club today. Don't forget the business: A lot of people are still making money here, but the golden age is long gone - as in RL the "big ones" are holding the ship. Ava: Tell me what are the ups and downs of owning a business in SL?
SirEdward: In general, there is usually a very low risk to to go bankrupt because it is virtual. And as a builder, you can get much reflection and meaning out of your work. The most negative thing, is that people often don't honor the work and time someone spent. A creator spends time sitting in front of the computer, just to finish a new mesh-shirt for example And in the end, people complain about spending L$5 on it, which is just a few cents in RL. For me, I can offer the nicest beach island to a client, but they will rent at another company, because of a difference in price of L$3 per week.

The old rule, "never touch a running system" takes place! Ava: Do you have any weird stories you can share with the readers of Diversity? SirEdward: Everyday in SL is a weird story - I suggest that people come in and enjoy their own weird stories.

A Man with A Mission

My very good friend, Xavier Thiebaud, lost his mother last year. I remember all the feelings and emotions I felt when I talked to Xavier during that time. There is always a special bond between sons and mothers and Xavier was no exception. They were extremely close and he gave up everything to go and take care of his mother. I wondered sometimes if I was going to be able to help get this amazing friend of mine through the hardest thing he has ever gone through. I wanted this to be a story from Xavier, on his journey to lay his mom’s ashes to rest. It is now 2018, and his journey is almost complete. The rest of this story is done by Xavier on his mission for his mother.

made my journey down to México. 1st stop Tijuana 2nd was Guadalajara 3rd Leon and destination Barra de Navidad. I had not been to México in over 30 years! I was literally going to a foreign country all alone with my only companion La La, (my Shi Tzu) who was my only constant throughout this entire odyssey. The night my mother passed away, I fell to my knees screaming Oh my God! I don’t know what to do! I laid down in a fetal position and cried like I’ve never cried before, until that morning. I never felt so alone in my life... I did not sleep until Saturday night... I had very little resources to rely on, and only agenda I had was to lay my mother’s ashes in the ocean at Barra. My second agenda was to sell the house my grandmother left for me in Leon.
I felt alone, but soon realized I was not 1 year ago, I set out on a journey that was alone. Not anymore... not only life changing, but I literally had We may not always have the family from no other choice. I met Dr. Electra (asunda1), when she came to L'Amour to check out L'Amour University of Fashion. I noticed Babies R Us Birthing Center on her shirt and asked if at some point I could write a story about the birthing center. She was very excited. I must be honest here for a minute, the thought of birthing children in Second Life is just odd to me. I went through it twice in RL and doing it in SL, is the furthest thing from my mind.
and began thinking of ways to use my art and medical background. I started taking classes in building and clothes making. I eventually was hired as an ER doctor in one of the SL hospitals on an RP sim and just kept going. Ava: Please tell our Readers What Babies R Us Birthing Center is all about?
Dr. Electra: Babies R Us Birthing Center is a small cottage style clinic where I see patients that use the Mama Allpa birthing system. There are many people I have experienced multiple births with on SL with disabilities and for some that my SL daughter. She and her partner means they cannot have children in RL, wanted to experience the birth process. while maybe others have lost a child. It is not something that either of them can have in RL because medical issues. Being able to have and raise a child Thanks to them, I now understand why here is a very emotional experience and some people might want to do it in SL. fulfills a need for those people. My goal It was a very rewarding experience, and is to help them experience the whole still is to be a Grandma. I don't have process of pregnancy and birthing a Grandkids in RL yet, so having them on child. Of course, this is a virtual world, SL is nice. but I try to the best of my abilities to RP the experience as closely as possible But what I have learned from really to the RL experience. Also, this is the parent suite where parents will come and visit with guests and have the baby weighed and measured. 2nd is a water bath in a heavenly setting. Mom sits in a tub of warm water surrounded by clouds and blue sky. 3rd is a beautiful waterfall with a warm water birthing pool. Swans float in a nearby water way. 4th is a fantasy forest where mom can experience the birth of her child, surrounded by a mythical forest, unicorns, swans, and fairies. Ava: What changes have you seen in the industry for babies in sl? Dr. Electra: Many of the pay-per-visit clinics are no longer in business since the Mama Allpa free services came into existence. This is good and bad, there is no accountability since no Lindens were exchanged and so people don't show up for appointments and are late and often just decide they don't want a baby at this time and don't come back. The good is that there are some very nice babies on the market now. "Funsies" is an interactive child that will grow to 20 RL years and needs RL care. The Zooby is ever popular due to its easy once a day care. Avatar children have become more popular with many people if there are SL relationships there will be families and the desire for babies and children. Ava: What do you see for the future of

the baby industry in SL? Dr. Electra: I see it continuing to grow and evolve. Virtual babies have changed over the years into interactive mood changing babies, toddlers and children. Adoption agencies for prim, toddleedoo and avatar children are becoming more popular also. Many schools are available for kids and family friendly sims are popping up around the grid. Ava: What made you choose this industry to be involved with in SL? Dr. Electra: I have always loved the medical field, so this gave me the opportunity fulfill my dream and the dream of others at the same time. Ava: Is this something you do in RL or just in SL? Dr. Electra: At one time I worked in the medical field, but had problems remembering the formulas for calculus and chemistry and finally left that industry. Ava: If you could spend a day on SL doing anything you wanted, what would that be? Dr. Electra: If I had unlimited funds, probably creating something. I love building and creating. Ava: What is the experience you see people going through with Babies R Us? Dr. Electra: It is a very emotional experience for most. As I mentioned previously, this is a way for people to fulfill a dream of family or just having a child to birth and raise. I have had more than one mom or dad cry after the birth of their child.

Ava: What brought you to Second Life, Sarai?

Sarai: The first time I logged into Second Life in September 2007, I performed a search for a traditional religious institution. At that time, the adult element of Second Life was not so neatly packaged or isolated. Teens had their own grid, so separation was not as necessary. That initial search landed me in the midst of an "adult playground" in a cathedral-inspired setting. I quickly realized that human creativity and

Sarai: I can meet an astonishingly wide variety of people! I truly enjoy the creative challenge of inventing and executing events and activities that people bring people joy. I have been involved in SL club life for over a decade for one simple reason: I love it! It really is a series of ups, with these
possible exceptions: It is expensive and not everyone appreciates and shares my "work = play" mentality, which can make it difficult to bring together a consistently reliable staff. Ava: If you could change anything about SL, what would it be and why? Sarai: While I am not a hardcore builder, if I could change one thing about Second Life, I think I would find a way to bring together the benefits of mesh with the availability and user friendliness of traditional prims, so that SL residents of all levels could have a better opportunity to create again. I might also banish the teens back to their own grid to allow the adults to truly roam freely, without restrictions. I would also allow less restricted casino gaming again.

Sarai: Being a staunch libertarian with a "live and let live" mindset and my own bizarre set of interests, there is very little that I would publicly label as "weird." I have had some friends disappear, only to reappear later on

I lost a contract for a multi-book deal because of this. It was a tough time and my brother thought SL would not only be fun for me, but it would also help rebuild some of the synaptic connections affected by my stroke. I spent my entire first day of SL at a newbie area. Keep in mind that newbie

Queen MaiaCer Lysette: Through one of my other daughters, Resmay. She and Ava were doing some work for RFL, which is a cause dear to my heart. They were building a carnival and looking for Queen MaiaCer Lysette: Some things are similar. I offer advice if asked, listen items that would fit the theme. So, how did it become the day in America when more than $600 million dollars worth of beer is sold? Have you heard this one before? Believe it or not, America has Corona beer to thank for that. In the 1980s, the Gamrinus Group who imports Corona beer, was struggling to get Corona sold in America. So, in 1989, they came up with a brilliant ad campaign that encouraged Mexican Americans who already celebrated Cinco de Mayo, to choose a Mexican beer as their drink of choice for the holiday.
The campaign took off and people all over America started drinking Corona on Cinco de Mayo, no matter what their cultura heritage. Within eight years, the holiday became more of a day to drink Corona than it was a time to commemorate the connection America and Mexico share. In an enormous win for the Corona marketers, by 1996, drinking Corona was the main way most people celebrated Cinco de Mayo.
