The Orchard Trail

OVERVIEW

Set primely against the backdrop of a bustling shopping and retail landscape, the Hilton Singapore Orchard affords the urbanite or modern traveller a luxurious respite. Through a restoration and conversion, the venue is a transformed, contemporary version of its former self – now the flagship and largest Hilton hotel in Asia Pacific. Due to the nature of the project, Avalon Collective was confronted with a host of restrictions and limitations in the space planning and reconfiguration, as well as construction logistics since the renovation took place while the old hotel was still operating. Importantly, the studio creatively maximised the existing structural conditions, reworking floorplans and exploiting vertical spaces.

For the new hotel, a distinct identity was established; one that vastly differentiates from the old and resonates with the modern guest. Through its design, it reinforces a connection to the locality – Singapore’s premier fashion and retail district – and its origins as a spice and fruit plantation. The hotel interiors embody ‘The Orchard Trail’, a unique concept by the studio

drawing on the agricultural heritage. Guests will also recognise retail design elements in the spaces – an embracement of the hotel’s present context that brings another dimension to the narrative.

A “boutique hotel” approach was taken in the redesign, reshaping large volumes and instilling moments of intimacy throughout. Demonstrative of Avalon Collective’s design philosophy, this boldly confronts the design norms of large hotels –typically having plenty of space but being able to benefit from more cosiness and warmth. Overall, the design makes use of clean lines, derived from the idea of systematic rows of trees and trails in an orchard, and layered textures to create a sense of timeless elegance. Guests will also feel at ease, with a palette of natural hues, refined wood finishes and soothing sage hints setting the tone of relaxation.

‘The Orchard Trail’ includes the themes The Elements (Reception), The Conservatory (Lobby Lounge), The Shed (Lobby Bar), The Smart Oasis (Meeting & Event Space), The Foliage (Guestrooms) and The Seed Treasure (Presidential Suite).

The Elements

A significant change is the redefined public space. Previously a large transitional open area, the space now has two separate zones for the reception and lobby lounge. The reception (The Elements) was strategically relocated beside the lift lobby, so that arriving guests would be efficiently received, in a more private and welcoming setting away from the main flow of traffic. Meanwhile, privacy from the lift lobby is maintained with a divider composed of statement bronze lighting fixtures flanked by prominent full height fins. Accommodating more reception desks than previously, as requested by the new operator in order to better facilitate an

efficient check in and check out, The Elements occupies a sizeable space. Nevertheless, a comfortable, intimate feel is fostered, owing to a much lower ceiling height. An inviting centrally positioned communal settee grounds the room, fringed with reception and concierge desks. Dark wood panels with sleek detailing on the built-in structures allude to the elements of the orchard trail, while the brilliant tangerine of the sofa cushions bring a pop of colour to the setting. Forming the backdrop, veneer-finished panels featuring an eye-catching geometric inlay replicate the fresh green tones of nature into the space.

The Conservatory & Shed

In the modification of the public space, the studio also created the new heart of the hotel – GingerLily, strategically located at the junction of both room towers. An afternoon tea lounge during the day and a bar after sunset, it is the central meeting and gathering point in the hotel. Such a space was missing in the former hotel, and Avalon Collective recognised that a “heart” was essential, also as an icon that guests can identify with the brand. The studio took advantage of the existing double-height ceiling and skylight to create a lounge (The Conservatory)

bathed in the daylight. Envisaged as a glasshouse, The Conservatory is defined by full-height steel and fluted glass panels that extend through the double volume space. Its design also draws inspiration from the ginger lily plant’s blooms, reflected in the tapered edges of the panels that meet the drop ceiling. The result is a bright and airy space for tea, also serving as an alternative breakfast room. Adjacent to it, a tucked away dining area (The Shed) has a moodier vibe suited for the bar at night. With a lowered ceiling, it replicates the feel of a cosy barn.

The Smart Oasis

On the other side of the reception, a former carpark space has been integrated into the interior footprint. In this new section, the meeting and event space (The Smart Oasis) occupies over 1,150 sqm, envisioned as an interconnected village comprising interlinked meeting spaces of varied sizes, a communal breakout lounge, an open pantry, and a courtyard. The studio was mindful of the existing carpark structural foundations, maximising the low ceiling height of 2.55m as well as seamlessly integrating the shear walls and columns in the design of The Smart Oasis. This daring but sophisticated conversion of a carpark into a new destination speaks of sustainability, giving new purpose to unutilised space.

The Smart Oasis has a sharp, stylish appeal that blends in its design the elements of nature. Structured linework, and natural tones accented with plush blue shades were consciously applied to initiate a calm atmosphere. Functionality, efficacy,

and comfort are essential to fruitful outcomes, the studio recognised in studying the nature of business activities – this was the key consideration in the design. The meeting rooms are well equipped with state-of-the-art LED screens and wall panels, so that personalised settings can be creatively executed. Outside of the meeting rooms, the lounge and open refreshment stations allow for extended business networking in a relaxed setting. These facilities surround the courtyard, featuring an illuminated Barrisol stretched ceiling and a landscaped garden. This marks the centre of the “village”, where supreme connectivity of the spaces allows for flexibility and comfort in interaction. Extensive acoustic treatment was also implemented throughout, including installing perforated wall panels in all meeting rooms. Due to these and other thoughtful details, The Smart Oasis allows for varied usage beyond conferences and events, priming the new hotel to offer cutting-edge MICE services in a holistic business environment.

The Seed Treasure

The private spaces carry forward the design sensibilities and focus on guest experience. Taking reference to the spices, cardamom, clove, pepper and nutmeg, the Presidential Suite (The Seed Treasure) inherits a sensuous earthy look invigorated by moments of deep, rich colour. Dark timber flooring throughout is accentuated with contrasting cream tone area rugs tinted with sage, giving a polished look and a textured contrast underfoot. The studio also restructured the expansive living area, converting the original simple, open floorplan into a layout that provides visual variety. Introducing a study vestibule instils sensory interest and creates intimate corners. The dining area is clearly defined, sporting a crisp white book-match marble tabletop, complemented by light hued leather chairs, and a modern chandelier evocative of water droplets. Beside it, largely occupying the living area, the lounge is composed of an assortment of designer furniture – a smorgasbord of different forms, shades and textures. Glimmering brass, brown woven leather and luxurious green velvet interplay with cosy

neutrals and smooth, glossy surfaces, assuring a layered depth in the interiors. Overhead, the addition of arched troughs across the room brings a graceful softness and are a subtle reference to the eaves on the building’s exterior. Punctuating the space, a fullheight feature wall designed using slabs of marble with intricate veining adds to the allure. Behind it, the study is enveloped in dark wood panels, brightened by vivid clove tones in the leather armchairs.

In the bedroom, a comforting atmosphere is achieved through the application of soft ivory and cream, as well as pale grey tones. Sleek lines in the built-in structures and fixtures complement the gentle curves applied at the edges of the room, a continuation of the visual language in the living area. An abstract imprint of a plantationinspired graphic is showcased on the panels above the bed headboard – a touch of art. A seamless connection between the bedroom and bathroom is established, with the bathroom carrying through the same softness, as seen in the bathtub featuring a curved, sculptural form.

The Foilage

In the other guestrooms (The Foliage), a stylish high-fashion vibe permeates, replacing the original traditional look. Geometry is played up across horizontal and vertical surfaces, utilising planes and lines to define functional features and at the same time create compelling focal points. Once again, soft angles are introduced in the furnishings, balancing the structured linearity to create spatial harmony. The studio also did away with traditional built-in elements in favour of loose furniture and fixtures, allowing a modular design that gives flexibility to guests in using the space. References to fashion include open-concept wardrobes and dressers that allow guests to proudly display their clothing and

accessories, which then become part of the aesthetic. Also, cleverly located mirrors and lighting set the perfect scene for guests to take photos of themselves. In the bathrooms, reflective black tiles on the walls inspired by fashion retail stores lend an air of luxury.

Implementing well thought out solutions to improvements identified, Avalon Collective created an indelible brand experience for guests from arrival to departure. A consistent design language of innovation and sensitivity pervades the property, and through its spirit, the new Hilton Singapore Orchard tells a tale of history and regeneration – bridging the past and the present.
