Join us this February in Avalon Park—a community that truly loves local.

during a brief visit back to Switzerland, where the weather in my hometown of Zurich has been nothing but rain, with temperatures hovering in the 30s and 40s. Despite the gloomy skies, my heart is warmed by a truly special milestone: the 10-year anniversary of our Assisted Living and Memory Care community, Encore at Avalon Park.

Wow, 10 years! This achievement fills all of us at Avalon Park Group (APG) with pride. From the very beginning of Avalon Park’s vision over 25 years ago, the dream was to create a community where people can live, learn, work, and play. Our goal has always been to ensure that individuals can experience every stage of life within Avalon Park.

It is not often that developers own and operate an Assisted Living community, but at APG, we take pride in being more than just developers— we are town builders. Operating ventures such as the Marketplace, East Orlando Gym, and The 5th Floor co-working and entrepreneur center is part of our DNA. Encore, however, is uniquely special.

Encore is home to over 100 residents, cared for by a dedicated team of more than 100 staff members who deeply understand the importance of their work. I often remind our team that Encore is not just another business; it is an extension of our commitment to care for people. While mistakes in other ventures might result in financial losses, at Encore the stakes are higher. The lives of our residents, who are often in need of daily assistance, are the most precious responsibility God has entrusted to us.

The formidable leadership of Kim, Suzy, Monica,

ones—mothers, fathers, and grandparents—to our care, often leading to a new chapter of joy and belonging in their lives.

It makes me happy when a family entrusts their mother or father, or another loved one into our care. They often start a new life at Encore, another chapter of joy and belonging. I have met many residents through the years at Encore, but there is only one resident who truly stands out and who I have a special bond with. Jose Lebron, who will celebrate his 101st birthday on March 1st of this year, has been with us at Encore since we first opened the doors. He is a true gem, greeting everyone in the lobby with warmth and sharing his love for his home at Encore. We affectionately call him our ambassador because of his daily rounds to check on every floor and his reassuring updates when I am abroad. He always tells me that everything at Encore is “under control,” and I believe him!

Thank you, Jose, for your unwavering spirit and presence. Thank you to the families who trust us to care for their loved ones. And from the bottom of my heart, thank you to the Encore team for 10 years of hard work, passion, and love.

We love Encore!

From the Desk of Commissioner

Maribel Gomez Cordero

Happy February 2025!

In February, we transition from the festive atmosphere of January to a month marked by the promise of new opportunities. Winter can still be felt in the air, providing a unique start to the year in the Sunshine State. Amidst this atmosphere, notable events like Valentine’s Day add a touch of warmth, fostering connections and celebrating love. It’s a time of heightened excitement and optimism, where the prospect of positive change fuels the early days of the year, encouraging us to approach the future with hope and enthusiasm. February is also African American History Month, a time to honor the achievements, resilience, and contributions of Black Americans throughout history. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the past, celebrate cultural heritage, and recognize the ongoing fight for justice and equality.

Last November, Orange County voters approved charter amendment #6 on the general election ballot. This amendment creates two additional

county commissioner districts. To accommodate this, the board of County Commissioners has created a Citizens’ Advisory Board to propose a new county commission district map with eight districts rather than the current six. This board will begin meeting later this month and is expected to complete its work by mid September. I encourage anyone interested to follow along by watching the meetings on Orange TV and by visiting the county’s website. Additionally the meeting locations will rotate between the six current districts to allow residents to attend close to home. Please stay tuned to see the upcoming meeting locations.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to receive my newsletter, you can email me at district4@ocfl.net or call my office at 407-836-5881. You can also meet me in person on the first Wednesdays of the month at the East Orange Community Center (12050 E Colonial Dr) or on the Third Wednesdays of the month at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center

(1751 Rhode Island Woods Cir). My time at both locations is from 10am to 12pm.

Wishing you a Happy New Year!

A Year of Impact: How the Avalon Park Arts and Culture Center Enriched Our Community in 2024

As we close the chapter on 2024, we reflect on a remarkable year for the Avalon Park Arts and Culture Center, the “ACC”. Last year, this dynamic hub has become a beacon for creativity, diversity, and community connection, profoundly impacting the lives of residents and visitors alike.

One of the most significant highlights of 2024 was the Arts and Culture Center’s dedication to philanthropy. Through various charity and fundraising events, the ACC raised thousands of dollars in donations, directly benefiting more than 10 local non-profit organizations. From the ChariTea events to food and clothing drives, each event underscored the power of art and collaboration to inspire generosity and collective action. These initiatives not only provided financial aid but also raised awareness for important causes, bringing the community together in the spirit of giving.

This year also marked the expansion of partnerships with a wide array of cultural organizations, further solidifying the ACC’s role as a cultural cornerstone in Avalon Park. Collaborations with the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce, the Indian American Business Association, Asia Trend, Thuyen Mai Productions, Love Our Youth, and many others brought an exciting array of events and programs to the community. These partnerships celebrated the rich diversity of Avalon Park, offering residents and visitors opportunities to experience the traditions, stories, and arts of cultures from around the globe.

Education has always been at the heart of the Avalon Park Arts and Culture Center’s mission, and 2024 was no exception. Weekly kids’ art classes, offered in partnership with Wonder Arte, provided young minds with a creative outlet to explore their imaginations and develop new skills. These classes will continue into 2025, ensuring that the next generation has access to arts education in their community. In addition, the ACC hosted a variety of educational workshops for all ages, including painting, reading, language, and music. One standout program was the Community Choir, which not only brought residents together but also performed during our spectacular Fourth of July celebration, showcasing the power of art to unite and inspire.

The Avalon Park Arts and Culture Center also expanded its programming to reflect a commitment to diversity and inclusion. A variety of new events were added to the docket, celebrating the rich diversity of the community and ensuring that everyone felt represented. From multicultural

festivals to inclusive workshops, these efforts aimed to foster a sense of belonging and create a welcoming environment for all. This dedication to diversity strengthens the ACC’s mission of being a cultural hub that embraces and celebrates the uniqueness of Avalon Park’s residents.

The ACC’s impact is perhaps best reflected in the sheer volume of its activities. In 2024 alone, it hosted an impressive 256 events, catering to a wide variety of interests, backgrounds, and demographic groups. These events ranged from family-friendly art classes and live music performances to cultural celebrations and wellness workshops, ensuring there was something for everyone. Whether it was a child discovering a love for painting or a senior citizen connecting with peers at a cultural celebration, the ACC provided meaningful opportunities for engagement and enrichment.

As we celebrate these accomplishments, we look forward to the opportunities and challenges of the coming year. The Avalon Park Arts and Culture Center remains committed to its mission of enriching lives through arts and culture, with plans to expand its programs, deepen its community impact, and continue serving as a catalyst for creativity and connection.

We are grateful to everyone who contributed to making 2024 a success—our partners, volunteers, staff, and, most importantly, the residents of Avalon Park. Together, we are building a vibrant, inclusive community that values art, diversity, and compassion. Here’s to another year of growth, creativity, and impact in Avalon Park!

There’s Something Wrong with the Village: Why Prioritizing Mental Health Matters

You’ve probably heard the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” But what happens when the village itself is struggling?

Modern culture and politics are driving us further apart, leaving many people feeling isolated, anxious, and overwhelmed. The support systems that once held communities together are fraying, and it’s no surprise that mental health challenges are on the rise. If you’ve been feeling this way, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to navigate it alone either.

As a therapist, I help people find clarity, build resilience, and create meaningful lives despite the noise of the world around them. Therapy isn’t just about fixing what’s “wrong”; it’s about learning how to set boundaries, develop self-awareness, and cultivate a sense of well-being in a culture that often prioritizes everything but our mental health.

Wellness isn’t just a buzzword—it’s about reconnecting with yourself in a world that constantly pulls you in different directions. Whether you’re dealing with stress, relationship struggles, anxiety, or just a nagging sense that something isn’t quite right, therapy can help you find your way back to yourself.

If you’re ready to reclaim your peace and create a life that feels aligned, we are here to help. Let’s work together to build a stronger,

healthier you—even if the village still has some catching up to do.

Reach out today. You don’t have to do this alone.

New Ellie Mental Health Clinic Now Open in Avalon Park

An Orlando area entrepreneur has opened the first of three Ellie Mental Health centers planned for the Southeast Orlando area. The first location is at 3680 Avalon Park East Blvd.

Ellie Mental Health is a rapidly growing national mental health franchise committed to making mental health care more accessible and welcoming to everyone. Most major insurance plans are accepted.

Franchise owner Jamie Olofson said his Ellie clinic will address the needs of the diverse Orlando community with therapy for anxiety, depression and people coping with life transitions such as adolescence, postpartum depression, divorce, grief and chronic illness. The clinic will offer flexible scheduling for both in-person and telehealth care. The facility has 10 therapy rooms to accommodate individual, couples, group and play therapy.

“I’m excited to create community-focused initiatives that connect people to accessible, high-quality mental health care through Ellie Mental Health,” he said.

Olofson’s new business venture came about after a personal positive experience with therapy. After 20 years in marketing, Olofson said, he found himself feeling disconnected from his work and his daughter was leaving for college. “I discovered just how vital therapy is – a resource everyone should have access to, no matter what challenges they face,” he said. “I came across Ellie Mental Health, and I saw it as the perfect opportunity to break down the stigma surrounding mental health, make care more accessible and positively impact my community.”

Clinic director Elena Saldamando will lead the clinic with a focus on creating a welcoming and compassionate environment. She has experience in incorporating mindfulness into therapy sessions. She offers supportive counseling as well as goal-oriented or behavioral modification approaches. She holds a master’s degree in social work from Florida State University and is an adjunct professor at the University of Central Florida’s MSW graduate program.

“We are excited to see how Jamie and his team address the needs and make a difference in the Orlando community,” said Erin Pash, chief executive officer and founder of Ellie Mental Health. “We are committed to making mental health care more accessible to everyone, and the way to do that is through the hard work and passion of people like Jamie.”

Appointments are easy to schedule and may be made by calling 407.326.3432; emailing elliefl21801@elliementalhealth.com; or visiting www.elliementalhealth.com/locations/orlando-avalon-park-fl/

Over the next few years, Olofson plans to open two more clinics in Southeast Orlando between Hunters Creek and the University of Central Florida.

Unlocking the Power of Therapy: Your Questions Answered by Ellie Mental Health

Ellie Mental Health in Avalon Park is now open, and we’re thrilled to connect with our community through this newsletter. At Ellie, we aim to make mental health care accessible, effective, and most importantly, personalized for every individual. In this newsletter, we’re diving into some common questions we’ve received about therapy to help demystify the process and show how it can benefit everyone—yes, everyone!

Questions from Our Community:

Is therapy for everyone or just those with serious problems? Therapy isn’t just for crises or major challenges. It can benefit anyone navigating stress, life changes, or relationship struggles. Think of it as a mental wellness check-up, similar to seeing your doctor for physical health. Seeking therapy is a proactive step toward feeling your best, and it’s a sign of strength, not weakness.

How can therapy help with “normal life” feelings? Sometimes, we dismiss feelings like stress or sadness as “just part of life,” but that doesn’t mean we have to endure them alone. Therapy offers tools and strategies to help you manage emotions and thrive, not just survive. Think of it as an investment in your emotional health.

What can I expect in a therapy session?

Your therapist will provide a confidential and nonjudgmental space where you can feel comfortable opening up. Sessions often include discussing your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, with the therapist offering insights or guidance tailored to your needs. You’ll leave each session feeling heard and supported, whether you meet in person or virtually.

What if I work full time?

We’ve got you covered! At Ellie, we offer flexible scheduling, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Our goal is to make therapy fit into your life, not the other way around.

How do I get started with therapy?

Getting started is simple: just call us! Our team will guide you through the process, answer your questions, and match you with a therapist who fits your needs. We accept most major insurances and can schedule your first session quickly.

How do I find the right therapist for me?

Choosing a therapist is about finding the right fit. At Ellie, we offer free

15-minute consultations to help match you with someone who specializes in your needs. You deserve to feel supported, understood, and empowered by your therapist.

Will therapy work for me?

Therapy’s effectiveness depends on your goals, effort, and connection with your therapist. Many people find it transformative, helping them develop coping skills, gain clarity, and improve their well-being over time.

How long does therapy take?

The duration of therapy varies based on your goals and needs. Some people find short-term therapy sufficient, while others benefit from longterm sessions. Your therapist will collaborate with you to create a plan and regularly reassess your progress.

How can therapy help with grief?

Grief is a unique journey, and therapy provides a compassionate space to navigate its complexities. A therapist can help you process emotions, develop coping strategies, and find ways to honor your loss while moving forward.

Junior Space Explorers Pass: What You Need to Know

Did you know that kids under 5 can get into the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) for FREE in 2025?! KSC is a fun, immersive, and educational experience located on the east coast of Florida, just about an hour from Downtown Orlando. The Junior Space Explorer Pass gets eligible children into KSC for free! Registration for 2025 is open now through February 24 — so hurry and grab yours today!

The Junior Space Explorer Pass gives free admission to eligible kids to KSC through December 31st. Blackout dates for some rocket launches and special events do apply, so be sure to double check validity before you head to the coast.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Children must be Florida residents and 5 or younger at the time of redemption. First, you will need to obtain a voucher online, these are not available at the doors, so fill out the form ahead of your first visit. You will need to bring the voucher AND proof of age to Kennedy Space Center the first time you go to redeem the pass. Digital copies of birth certificates will be accepted along with any other government-issued ID for the child.

How do I get one?

Once you fill out the voucher form online, you will take it and the proof of your child’s age to the Will Call or Information desk upon arrival. Staff will complete your registration at that time and give you your pass. As long as your child is 5 or under at this time, you are eligible for the pass. This means that if your child is turning 6 before the end of the year, they are still eligible as long as their first visit is before their 6th birthday.

What about parents and siblings older than five?

Parents and older siblings will require their own tickets to enter Kennedy Space Center. Annual passes are available for purchase for individuals and families. Check the ticket webpage when planning your trip because there are often deals running and two-day tickets are much less expensive per day than a oneday ticket.

Whether you are headed to Kennedy Space Center for the day or you’re making a weekend out of your trip, there is something for the whole family to learn and enjoy. KSC is also something super special to experience around the holidays.
