Zurich, as seen in the picture I just took.
From our Zurich residence, it is about two miles to the high school I attended more than four decades ago, located in the heart of the city.
It still feels like a fairy tale that the son of a baker moved from Switzerland, in the heart of Europe, to East Orlando, Florida.
At first glance, my historical hometown of Zurich and Avalon Park in Orlando could not seem more different. Here in Zurich, there is the view of mountains and snow, while in Avalon Park, it is abundant sunshine and summer heat.
After almost one-third of a century, I feel Avalon Park is where I am truly at home, while Zurich remains where I grew up. But in my heart, both towns feel deeply like home. After spending a few weeks in Zurich, I miss Avalon Park, and vice versa.
You might think I enjoy the “extreme opposites,” but when I look at Avalon Park and Zurich, I realize the two towns have more in common than one might think. Both Zurich and Avalon Park are communities where you can live, learn, work, and play. Many buildings are mixed-use, with apartments or offices above retail stores and restaurants. In both Zurich and Avalon Park, you can walk or bike to schools, stores, and restaurants.
I grew up in a small apartment in the northern neighborhoods of the City of Zurich, called
down the street is a small grocery store, and my elementary school was about half a mile from our home. With our residence being small, the entire neighborhood became our “living room.”
This is probably why my family and I enjoy living on a 10-acre ranch in East Orlando today, with horses, chickens, a dog, and a cat. That lifestyle is certainly very different from growing up in northern Zurich.
Zurich is an international city, and in most parts of town, you can hear all kinds of languages. Besides Swiss German, English is one of the most commonly spoken languages. Zurich serves as the European headquarters for Google, and many American companies choose Switzerland as their European hub, including General Motors, Dow Chemical, Caterpillar, IBM, and more.
Sometimes I hear people say, “These are the most challenging and difficult times in history,” citing the war in Ukraine, the Middle East, economic challenges, and more. However, being born in the U.S. during the last approximately 60 years has certainly been a blessed time of prosperity. Consider the monumental challenges someone born in Germany around 1880 would have faced, enduring two world wars with vast destruction, two instances of hyperinflation, and the Great Depression.
We are truly blessed to live in Avalon Park or Zurich (or both), and I am very thankful for that.
Happy New Year!
From the Desk of Commissioner
Maribel Gomez Cordero
Happy January 2025!

Declutter Your Space, Declutter Your Mind: The Wellness Connection
As the new year begins, many of us look for ways to embrace fresh starts and set the tone for a healthier and more balanced life. One simple yet transformative way to achieve this is by decluttering your living space. An organized environment not only creates a visually appealing home but also has a profound impact on your mental and physical well-being. At The Flats at Avalon Park, we’re all about creating spaces that enhance your lifestyle, and this January, we’re diving into the wellness connection between decluttering and peace of mind.
Why Decluttering Matters
Our living spaces often reflect the state of our minds. Cluttered rooms can lead to a cluttered mind, making it harder to focus, relax, or even sleep. Research has shown that excessive clutter increases stress levels, contributes to feelings of anxiety, and can even impact productivity. By taking the time to declutter, you’re not just tidying up your home—you’re creating a sanctuary where you can recharge and thrive.
The Mental Health Benefits of Decluttering
1. Reduced Stress: A clean and organized space promotes a sense of calm and order. When your surroundings are clutterfree, you’re less likely to feel overwhelmed by visual noise.
2. Improved Focus: Removing unnecessary items from your environment allows your brain to focus on what truly matters. This is especially important for those working or studying from home.
3. Enhanced Mood: A tidy space can uplift your spirits and create a sense of accomplishment. The act of organizing and letting go of items you no longer need can be deeply therapeutic.
4. Better Sleep: A clutter-free bedroom fosters a more peaceful atmosphere, which can improve the quality of your sleep—a cornerstone of good health.
The Physical Health Benefits of Decluttering
1. Increased Movement: The process of decluttering often
involves lifting, moving, and organizing items. It’s a lowimpact physical activity that gets your body moving.
2. Reduced Allergens: Clearing out clutter can reduce dust, mold, and other allergens that accumulate in overcrowded spaces, leading to a healthier living environment.
3. Better Nutrition Habits: A tidy kitchen makes meal preparation easier and more enjoyable, encouraging healthier eating habits.
How to Get Started
1. Set Small Goals: Start with one area, like your closet or a single drawer, to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Celebrate each small win to stay motivated.
2. Use the “Keep, Donate, Toss” Method: Go through your belongings and sort them into three categories: items you’ll keep, items to donate, and items to discard.
3. Organize for Accessibility: Arrange your belongings in a way that makes them easy to access and use. This can save time and reduce frustration.
4. Adopt a Minimalist Mindset: Embrace the idea that less is more. Focus on keeping items that bring you joy and serve a purpose.
5. Maintain Your Space: Regularly assess your environment to prevent clutter from building up again. A few minutes each day can make a big difference.

New Year, New Habits: Fun Ways to Make Learning a Family Adventure
As we step into a brand-new year, it’s a wonderful opportunity to start fresh and create routines that can last a lifetime. But forget about resolutions that fizzle out by February this year, focus on learning adventures that bring your family together and help your child grow. Remember, you are your child’s first and most important teacher, and learning doesn’t need to be complicated. With a little creativity, you can turn everyday moments into simple, fun, and meaningful learning experiences for the whole family.
1. Start a Family Reading Challenge
Reading is one of the most impactful ways to foster learning. Set a goal for the year one book a week or a chapter every night and track your progress with a simple reading chart. To help get you started, click the link for your reading log to make tracking fun! https://sites.google.com/view/creativetutorstudio/ family-reading-challenge
2. Bring Learning to Life with Hands-On Fun STEAM activities combine creativity with learning. Try building a paper airplane launcher and experiment with designs to see how far each plane flies. Learn about flight and physics while having fun. You can find how-to videos on YouTube to guide you through creating the airplane launcher with your child.
3. Create a Family Learning Vision Board
A vision board is a fun way for everyone to share their goals for the year. Design your vision board together, and include personal, educational, and family goals. You can even learn how to create one in my Canva Basics Workshop on January 18 at the Avalon Arts and Culture Center. It’s a great way to start the year inspired! Compact Creativity: Home Office Solutions for the Space-Challenged
Embracing a minimalist approach in a small living space doesn’t mean sacrificing functionality, especially when it comes to creating a home office. By cleverly utilizing what you already have, you can carve out a personalized and efficient workspace. The key is to harness innovative solutions that cater to flexibility and seamless integration without overwhelming your living quarters. The 5th Floor offers these helpful suggestions.
Optimize Flexibility with a Rolling Cart or Small Table
A rolling cart or a compact table serves as a movable workstation for your home office, providing the ability to relocate effortlessly to spots with optimal working conditions, like near a window or in a serene corner. These versatile pieces double as storage or side tables when not in active use. They are particularly suitable for small spaces, incorporating built-in shelves to keep your essentials organized and your area tidy. With this adaptable option, any space can quickly transform into a productive work environment.
Prioritize Peace of Mind with a Homeowners Warranty
As a busy professional working from home, understanding electronics protection plans is key to maintaining an efficient workspace. Investing in a homeowners warranty that includes electronics coverage ensures your essential devices are safeguarded against sudden malfunctions. This protection minimizes the stress and expense of unexpected repairs or replacements, keeping your home office operational. With this reliable safety net, you can concentrate on your tasks without the distraction of potential technical issues.
Consider a Coworking Space for Extra Room and Focus
On hectic days when your home office isn’t enough, a coworking space like The 5th Floor can be a vital alternative, offering the additional room and professional ambiance to enhance productivity. These spaces help you escape household distractions, sharpening your focus on demanding tasks. They also present valuable networking opportunities, connecting you with like-minded professionals and encouraging collaboration. For those seeking a flexible backup workspace, the benefits of a coworking space are clear, providing the perfect setting to tackle any busy day.
Create Visual Boundaries with a Folding Screen
Using a folding screen to define your home office space within a larger room helps establish mental and physical boundaries, important for balancing
work and leisure. This separation aids in mentally transitioning between relaxation and work modes, reinforcing your focus. Folding screens are available in various styles and sizes, allowing for a functional yet aesthetically pleasing partition that can be stored away easily when not needed. This method effectively maximizes space while maintaining the flexibility to shift back to a more open home environment.
Use the Kitchen Counter as a Desk Area
The kitchen counter, often a hub of activity, can also serve as an efficient stand-in for a home office desk. Designating a section of the counter for work transforms it into a functional desk space, suitable for both sitting and standing postures. This setup is particularly useful for short stints of work or when you need to multitask during meal prep. After work, the area can be cleared swiftly, returning the kitchen to its primary function without lingering clutter.
Choose Multipurpose Furniture for Versatility
Investing in multipurpose furniture is wise in small living spaces, providing essential versatility without sacrificing functionality. Such pieces, like desks with built-in storage or foldable tables, ensure your living area remains uncluttered and adaptable. The dual functionality of these furniture pieces helps keep your space organized and ready for both work and downtime. Selecting furniture that performs multiple roles allows you to utilize every square inch of your living space effectively.
Take Advantage of Vertical Space Under a Loft Bed
In tight quarters, a loft bed is an excellent solution for utilizing vertical space, allowing for a compact yet effective workspace underneath. This setup is particularly beneficial in small rooms, maximizing floor space while offering a secluded spot for concentrated work. Adding a desk and shelving beneath the loft bed creates an organized and functional office area that integrates seamlessly into small living spaces. This arrangement not only saves valuable floor space but also helps keep your living area open and less congested.
Adapting to a small living environment with a smart home office setup empowers you to maintain productivity and comfort simultaneously. These strategic enhancements invite a blend of practicality and style into your daily work routine, optimizing even the most limited spaces for maximum efficiency. By implementing creative spatial solutions, your compact living area can transform into a dynamic work haven that promotes focus and professionalism.

Orange County Supervisor of Elections Highlights Expansion of Voting as Orange County Nears 840,000 Registered Voters
Orange County will end 2024 with almost 840,000 voters, placing it fifth in the state for total voters.
The substantial growth in Orange County is why in 2024 the Supervisor of Elections office expanded early voting locations from 20 to 22 and eventually added four more express sites during the November General Election bringing the total number to 26. Beyond new sites, the office also expanded the footprint of existing locations, adding additional clerks and booths.
In addition to expanding early voting, the office has also been at the forefront of voter outreach and education, conducting more than 100 in-person events between July and October. Due to changes to state law impacting voter registration and vote-by-mail, the office has consistently explored new ways to engage with voters and provide critical election information.
“One of the major challenges our team embraced this year was identifying voting deserts, places where turnout has been historically low, and then looking for ways to engage voters or partner with community groups to increase civic engagement,” said Orange County Supervisor of Elections Glen Gilzean. “As our county continues to grow, it will remain critical that we continue to identify and engage communities in the electoral process.”
The office also reminds voters that all vote-by-mail requests used in 2024 will expire this week, and voters must fill out a new VBM request for 2025-26.

Orange County Supervisor of Elections 2024: By the Numbers
As 2024 ends, the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office looks back on a historic year featuring a recordbreaking number of elections and a record-breaking ballot.
613,491 Voters: 73.3% of all Orange County voters voted in the 2024 November General Election. Because the ballot in November was two pages, front and back, the team at the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office processed more than 1.2 million pieces of paper and scanned 2.4 million images.
99.999% Accuracy: After scanning the 2.4 million images the office’s audit of the November General Election returned an accuracy rating of 99.999%
100 Events: Throughout the summer and into the fall, the Elections Outreach department held more than 100 events, providing voter education and registration across Orange County.
70 Gen Z Poll Workers: For the first time, the office actively recruited and trained 70 Gen Z students to serve as poll workers and greeters on Election Day. This innovative initiative advances two of the office’s core goals: recruiting new poll workers and engaging new voters. All Gen Z poll workers were required to register or pre-register to vote and work at one of the county’s polling locations.
42 Supervised Voting Sites: Due to the interest in the 2024 General Election, Orange County had 42 locations request supervised voting. Supervised voting is required by state law and helps bring the election to voters at facilities who otherwise would have trouble casting their vote.
12 Veterans: For the 2024 General Election the Orange
County Supervisor of Elections office hired 12 US military veterans to assist in supervised voting, providing voting assistance at VA facilities across the county including the VA Community Living Center at Lake Nona.
7 Elections: In 2024, Orange County voters participated in seven elections from the House 35 Special Election in January to the City of Orlando special election in the spring, to the Primary Election and General Election to close out the year. Most supervisors of elections offices conduct two or three major elections in a year, this year our office conducted seven, tying the previous record set by the office in 2017.
2 New Locations: The Orange County Supervisor of Elections office added two new locations for Early Voting (Eatonville Town Hall & Heart of West Lakes). Additionally, the office added four new “express sites” in the middle of Early Voting during the November General Election to help reduce lines.
2 More Law Enforcement Officers: Election security means protecting your vote for the entire process. In 2024 the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office added extra law enforcement to the transportation of ballots, ensuring there was an officer or deputy at each supervised voting location to escort the voted ballots back to the office for processing.
1 New Live Stream: To boost transparency and trust in the electoral process, the office unveiled a new way for voters to watch in real-time the processing of ballots. By logging onto OCFElections.gov voters can watch a live stream of ballots being processed during the election.
