Prepare Your Kids for Back to School

Whether you’ve done it before or not, preparing yourself and your kid to go back to school can be a lot. It’s a new routine for you and your kids, like different bedtimes, knowing what lunches are quick and easy to make, and making sure your kid has all their school supplies ready. As August begins, take time to prepare and go out shopping with your kids to make sure they have everything they need.

Bedtime Routine

A school sleep schedule means getting to bed earlier and getting up early in the morning. This won’t happen overnight, though. A week or so before school starts, start getting your child in the habit to go to bed early, and you as well! You’ll be well-rested to help your child get ready for school, as well as help make their lunches and pack their backpack. To start getting to bed at a reasonable time, shut off electronics early on and do calm activities to settle down for the night.

Getting the Right Supplies

This will take another few weeks of preparation to get your kid ready for school. Start by getting organized. Make sure your child has all the supplies they need, including a backpack, school supplies, and clothes that are appropriate for any kind of weather. Double check your kid’s school supply list to make sure they have everything so you don’t need to shop last minute.

Healthy Habits

Pack a healthy lunch and snacks. This will help your child stay energized throughout the day. Some good, easy lunches to pack your kids are chicken, egg, or tuna salad sandwich, turkey sandwich, taco salad, lunch meat roll ups, etc. It’s important to pack all tiers of the food pyramid as your kid needs all the nutrients they need throughout the day. Snacks are a great way to help cover this part. You can pack fruits, veggies, hummus with pita chips, and a healthier alternative for one of their favorite desserts.

Celebrate the Beginning of a New School Year

At the end of the day, back to school is an accomplishment! Take the family out for dinner and celebrate the beginning of another school year. It’s also important to talk to your child about their expectations for the school year. Help them set goals and develop a plan for achieving them. Be positive and supportive. Let your child know that you believe in them and that you are there to help them succeed.

Back to school can be a stressful time for both children and parents. By following these tips, you can help make the transition easier for everyone.
