born, Switzerland, and the second half in Florida, USA. I still routinely go back and forth between Orlando and Switzerland Avalon Park Group offices.

People often ask me, where do I like it more, and the answer is: I like a good steak, but I also like chocolate cake, but those are two different things. I cannot say what I like better. Over the years I have listed on paper what I think is “better” in Florida and what is “better” in Switzerland, and it always ends up pretty much the same!

So, when asked what home to me is, the answer is simple: BOTH!

While I am in Switzerland, I am the “best” Ambassador for the Unites States of America, Florida and of course Avalon Park! And while I am in the United States, I am doing the same for Switzerland.

Switzerland’s birth date is August 1st, 1291. The US “was born” on July 4th, 1776. Well, that is quite a difference in age. However, the US and Switzerland have much more in common than one may think. In the Western world the only countries that were never a Monarchy (never had a King or Queen) are Switzerland and the US. The direct democracy model with a House of Representatives and a Senate are almost identical in each of the countries. I would also go as far to say that the average businessman from Zurich (my Swiss hometown) has much more in

to call both countries home. Hence, I will celebrate independence twice over the next few weeks, on 4th of July in Avalon Park Orlando and August 1st in Switzerland.

As always there will be a great event on July 4th in Avalon Park. It will start with a 5K run in the morning, and hopefully many of you will join me for the run! I also hope that you will share in the community festivities that evening, like the YMCA Bike Parade and the AllStar Dance Apple Pie Bake-Off, the wrap up a day of community and celebration with world-class fireworks at 9 pm.

July, a month of warmth and vibrant energy, has arrived in our community! As spring moves on and we welcome the summer solstice, our community is buzzing with excitement. With longer days and plenty of sunshine, July is the perfect time to gather with friends and family outdoors. As we embrace the spirit of togetherness, let’s make the most of July by connecting with our neighbors and enjoying the simple pleasures of outdoor living.

I would like to update you on the status of the approved traffic signal to be installed at Timber Springs Blvd and Avalon Park Blvd. While the light is scheduled to be installed in 2024, my office is remaining in contact with the Traffic Engineering Division to work on temporary solutions while the permanent light is not yet ready. We are hoping to see some changes to this intersection soon.

As you may be aware, Orange County is currently in the process of updating its comprehensive land use plan. The new comprehensive plan will be known as Vision 2050. The new plan will be modern in its character and will incorporate elements and objectives to promote sustainability and smart growth. Public engagement is an extremely important part of this process, and as such I have requested that two community meetings be held in my district so that the residents have the opportunity to engage directly with the planning staff and share their thoughts. The second meeting will be on July 6th at 6pm in the Avalon Park area. The location is not final yet, so please stay tuned for final confirmation. I greatly encourage all residents to participate in either or both meetings. Vision 2050 will be a very significant part of how this County grows going forward, and we want as many residents to participate as possible.

Pico de Gallo Mexican Grill & Sister Restaurant The Bakery Colombian Cafe Expanding Again

Avalon Park Group announced today that Pico de Gallo will be expanding its operations by opening two new locations this summer in the Central Florida area. The authentic Latin American restaurant will also return to the Marketplace at Avalon Park, while also expanding The Bakery Colombian Cafe concept in the Clock Tower.

Two additional locations of the Pico de Gallo brand are set to open in Orlando later this summer: Waterford Lakes in the Sprouts Plaza and one in the Lake Nona area. The Marketplace at Avalon Park will see Pico de Gallo return on June 25th, to allow for the expansion of The Bakery into the entire space the two currently share in the Clock Tower in Downtown Avalon Park. The expansion of The Bakery will bring additional traditional Colombian Latin Buffet menu items, like Cazuela de Frioles, Sancocho Colombiano, and Ajiaco.

“The community has welcomed us with open arms and stomachs,” said Lopez. “I cannot wait to share our newly expanded The Bakery menu with our new neighbors. We are also thrilled to be bringing the Pico de Gallo concept back to the Marketplace, where we got our start and feel proud to call home.”

4th of July Dining Ideas: Ignite Your Taste Buds

EOCC Business Expo 2023

Over the last 10 years, the East Orlando Chamber of Commerce has celebrated and provided an outlet for our Chamber Members to connect with fellow members and the community at the annual Business Expo. This year the Business Expo will again be located at the beautiful Doubletree by Hilton Hotel near the Orlando Airport at 5555 Hazeltine National Drive, Orlando, FL 32812 on Thursday, August 24th from 5-8pm.

This event brings together hundreds of businesses and professionals to highlight their commodities to fellow Chamber members and to the community. If you have never attended this event, it is a one stop shop to learn about the businesses which are located and serve East Orange County. The Juiice Box Opening New Location in Downtown Avalon Park

Budget Friendly Orlando Summer Activities

The heat is blazing and the end of school countdowns are ticking away. While this season is notorious for lazy days, ice cream cones and cannonballs into the pool, it’s often met with parental hesitation in fear of constantly hearing the infamous “I’m bored” declarations from their tiny humans. Regal Cinemas $1 Movies – Throughout the summer, Regal Cinemas hosts the Summer Movie Express where $1 kid movies are every Tuesday and Wednesday morning through the summer at participating theatres.

Popcorn Flicks – The City of Winter Park and The Enzian have teamed up to host an outdoor movie night on the second Thursday of each month on Park Ave’s Central Park. This event is free to the public and sure to be a hit, especially with several ice cream shops just across the street!

Museums On Us Weekends – If you are a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch card holder, then you have free access to certain museums on the first weekend of each month! Click here to find the museums closest to you.

Uptown Concert Series – The city of Altamonte Springs hosts a free concert in Cranes Roost Park. Bring a picnic or purchase from the food and drink vendors available. (day may vary, check their calendar!)

Fort Wilderness Campground Cinema & S’Mores Sign-ALong – Enjoy a unique night of free camp themed fun filled with songs, a movie, and a meet-and-greet with Chip and Dale all in the fantastic campsite of Disney’s Fort Wilderness.

Farmer’s Markets – If you’re looking for a fun weekend outing for your family, visit one of the many farmers markets we have here in Central Florida! There are several to choose from and at least one happening every day of the week. My personal favorite is the “cheese guy” (you’ll thank me later), and the kettle corn. You’re sure to enjoy the community, healthy foods, and some of the most interesting individuals in the area.

Mommy & Me Classes – OMB has an excellent compilation of local Mommy & Me classes that are an excellent opportunity to meet new moms and allow for healthy social and educational development for little ones.

Hardware Store Kid Clinics – Check out your local Lowe’s for their Build & Grow Kid’s Clinic or Home Depot for their Kid’s Workshop. Each event is held once a month a designated Saturday and is free.

Michaels Kids Club – For just $2 a child, creative minds can make something new and exciting by attending one of the Michaels Kids Club craft workshops. These classes are geared for children ages 3 and up, and be sure to check their website for dates and times at the location nearest you.

Joann’s Classes – From sewing to tie-dye to cake decorating, Joann’s offers a variety of classes at multiple times throughout the summer with prices ranging from $5 – $45 depending on what skill you would like to learn. Each location has their own Kid’s Classes, so be sure to check with the location nearest you.

Lakeshore Kids Crafts – Each Saturday kids ages 3 & up are invited to come and complete a special craft anytime between 11a.m. – 3p.m. at all Lakeshore Learning stores.

ELCOC Nationally Recognized for Video and Social Media Marketing

The Early Learning Coalition of Orange County (ELCOC) is thrilled to accept two prestigious awards from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). ELCOC was honored with the Award of Excellence for Video and the Merit Award in Social Media. These two awards recognize ELCOC’s efforts in utilizing innovative communication strategies to promote quality early childhood education in Orange County.

ELCOC was also awarded the Merit Award in Social Media for the strategic use of social media in the 2023 Diaper Drive campaign with Orange County Head Start. Through the Coalition’s social media platforms, ELCOC exceeded its goal of 5,000 diaper donations and reached an impressive 10,140 diapers, all of which were delivered to the Central Florida Diaper Bank.

Avalon Park Pickleball Update

The 27th South Village Pickleball Tournament was held June 2, 2023. We had 12 players playing 6 games each to 11 points, each game with a different player in a modified Round Robin format. Players ranged in age from 11 to 75 years old.

Pizzas were delivered to the courts by the Avalon Park Pizza Hut, and each player donated anywhere from $1.00 to $5.00, or whatever they wished to donate or not donate. Some players brought cookies and other snacks for everyone to enjoy. Friends and family members

were encouraged to bring a chair and a beverage and come watch. After each player had played 6 games, we added up the individual game points for each of the 12 players, and then had a playoff among the top 4 point earners. Sheila Harvey had a perfect score of 66 winning all 6 games to 11, and in an exciting playoff with teammate Corey Coljeski, they lost to the doubles team of Bonnie Walker and Matt Salamon. Through collaborative efforts, the Rotary Club of Avalon Park has made a lasting impact, fostering unity and making a meaningful difference in the local community and Central Florida. Their commitment to service, philanthropy, and unity continues to shape the fabric of our community.

The Rotary Club of Avalon Park celebrated the installation of its new board members for the 2023-2024 term, signifying a significant transition of leadership and a shared commitment to advancing Rotary’s mission. Members of the club extended their profound appreciation to former President Jean Zambrano for her exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication during her time as club president. Jean’s contributions played a major role in shaping the club’s success and fostering a spirit of service within the community.

With heartfelt appreciation, Rotary Club members, along with family and friends, gathered to honor exceptional individuals who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to Rotary’s ideals in 2022-23. Maria Rodammer received Rotarian of the Year, and Gary Mayer received Rookie of the Year. Dede Holloway, Paul Santos, James McQueeney, and Jean Zambrano received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.

Led by President Terri Bernhardt, the newly installed board includes Vice/Past Jean Zambrano, President-Elect Karl Pearson, Secretary Jim Foulks, Treasurer Jen Giessler, and

Sgt. At Arms Mike Houlihan, Director of Service Chair Sara Monk, Director of Membership Chair David Wideman, and Director of Foundation Chair Tom Beanland, along with non-voting board members Damon Abruzere (Youth Services Chair), Joe Filice (Speaker Chair), and Waed Al Nimri (Public Image Chair). Their diverse skills and experiences will contribute to the club’s effective management and sustainable growth. The ceremony was made even more special with the presence of Sonya LaBosco, the District Governor-elect for District 6980, who kindly joined the event, creating a wonderful opportunity to connect with an esteemed representative from our district.

The Induction Ceremony was a magnificent occasion that celebrated the achievements of exceptional individuals, installed a new board, and emphasized the Rotary’s commitment to service and community development.

The Rotary Club of Avalon Park, established in 2006, has become a pillar of service and fellowship in the community. Their dedication has been acknowledged through the prestigious Rotary Citation in District 6980, highlighting their commitment to making a positive impact. Throughout the past year, they have completed approximately 40 service projects and fundraisers, particularly on food/hunger projects, which run twice weekly. By organizing signature events like the Rotary Craft Beer Festival, Poker Tournament, and Holiday Wine Walk, the Rotary Club of Avalon Park has raised nearly $65,000 (after expenses) to support designated charities, scholarships, and various club activities. Together, they are driving meaningful change and fostering a spirit of service.
