born, Switzerland, and the second half in Florida, USA. I still routinely go back and forth between Orlando and Switzerland Avalon Park Group offices.

People often ask me, where do I like it more, and the answer is: I like a good steak, but I also like chocolate cake, but those are two different things. I cannot say what I like better. Over the years I have listed on paper what I think is “better” in Florida and what is “better” in Switzerland, and it always ends up pretty much the same!

So, when asked what home to me is, the answer is simple: BOTH!

While I am in Switzerland, I am the “best” Ambassador for the Unites States of America, Florida and of course Avalon Park! And while I am in the United States, I am doing the same for Switzerland.

Switzerland’s birth date is August 1st, 1291. The US “was born” on July 4th, 1776. Well, that is quite a difference in age. However, the US and Switzerland have much more in common than one may think. In the Western world the only countries that were never a Monarchy (never had a King or Queen) are Switzerland and the US. The direct democracy model with a House of Representatives and a Senate are almost identical in each of the countries. I would also go as far to say that the average businessman from Zurich (my Swiss hometown) has much more in

to call both countries home. Hence, I will celebrate independence twice over the next few weeks, on 4th of July in Avalon Park Orlando and August 1st in Switzerland.

As always there will be a great event on July 4th in Avalon Park. It will start with a 5K run in the morning, and hopefully many of you will join me for the run! I also hope that you will share in the community festivities that evening, like the YMCA Bike Parade and the AllStar Dance Apple Pie Bake-Off, the wrap up a day of community and celebration with world-class fireworks at 9 pm.

Happy 4th of July!

Happy July!

July, a month of warmth and vibrant energy, has arrived in our community! As spring moves on and we welcome the summer solstice, our community is buzzing with excitement. With longer days and plenty of sunshine, July is the perfect time to gather with friends and family outdoors. As we embrace the spirit of togetherness, let’s make the most of July by connecting with our neighbors and enjoying the simple pleasures of outdoor living.

I would like to update you on the status of the approved traffic signal to be installed at Timber Springs Blvd and Avalon Park Blvd. While the light is scheduled to be installed in 2024, my office is remaining in contact with the Traffic Engineering Division to work on temporary solutions while the permanent light is not yet ready. We are hoping to see some changes to this intersection soon.

As you may be aware, Orange County is currently in the process of updating its comprehensive land use plan. The new comprehensive plan will be known as Vision 2050. The new plan will be modern in its character and will incorporate elements and objectives to promote sustainability and smart growth. Public engagement is an extremely important part of this process, and as such I have requested that two community meetings be held in my district so that the residents have the opportunity to engage directly with the planning staff and share their thoughts. The second meeting will be on July 6th at 6pm in the Avalon Park area. The location is not final yet, so please stay tuned for final confirmation. I greatly encourage all residents to participate in either or both meetings. Vision 2050 will be a very significant part of how this County grows going forward, and we want as many residents to participate as possible.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to receive my newsletter, you can email me at district4@ ocfl.net or call my office at 407-836-5881.

You can also meet me in person at one of my two satellite office locations. On the first Wednesdays of the month, you can

meet me at the East Orange Community Center (12050 E Colonial Dr) or on the Third Wednesdays of the month at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center (1751 Rhode Island Woods Cir). My time at both locations is from 10am to 12pm.

Pico de Gallo Mexican Grill & Sister Restaurant The Bakery Colombian Cafe Expanding Again

Avalon Park Group announced today that Pico de Gallo will be expanding its operations by opening two new locations this summer in the Central Florida area. The authentic Latin American restaurant will also return to the Marketplace at Avalon Park, while also expanding The Bakery Colombian Cafe concept in the Clock Tower.

Two additional locations of the Pico de Gallo brand are set to open in Orlando later this summer: Waterford Lakes in the Sprouts Plaza and one in the Lake Nona area. The Marketplace at Avalon Park will see Pico de Gallo return on June 25th, to allow for the expansion of The Bakery into the entire space the two currently share in the Clock Tower in Downtown Avalon Park. The expansion of The Bakery will bring additional traditional Colombian Latin Buffet menu items, like Cazuela de Frioles, Sancocho Colombiano, and Ajiaco.

“The community has welcomed us with open arms and stomachs,” said Lopez. “I cannot wait to share our newly expanded The Bakery menu with our new neighbors. We are also thrilled to be bringing the Pico de Gallo concept back to the Marketplace, where we got our start and feel proud to call home.”

Originally opening in September 2021 in the Marketplace

food hall, Pico de Gallo has been welcomed in the Avalon Park community, and is ready to expand. Long-time Avalon Park residents Jorge and Heidi Cardona-Lopez, as well as sister Heisell Alarcon brought this vision to life after 13 years, and now the vision is growing even more.

“I am always pleased to hear of the continued success of long-time residents and quadruple stakeholders that live, learn, work and play in Avalon Park,” says Beat Kahli, President and CEO of Avalon Park Group. “The entire family is a prime example of working hard and realizing the American Dream.”

4th of July Dining Ideas: Ignite Your Taste Buds

If you’re choosing to spend July 4th at home, it’s a perfect time to go all out cooking a huge meal for your family and friends. Fire up the grill and plan a whole feast for everyone to enjoy. Below is inspiration for some flavorful and easy dishes and drinks to cook up for everyone.

Appetizers

To start Independence Day off, whip up some appetizers to tide everyone over until the main dish is ready. You can either go all out or do light appetizers, so no one gets full before more food comes. Dips like spinach artichoke, buffalo chicken and hummus are great starters paired with chips for everyone to snack on. You can also go the classic route with deviled eggs and a veggie tray.

Drinks

Fill up pitchers with everyone’s favorite drinks and stock the fridge with cans of sodas and beer. For non-alcoholic drinkers, lemonade, fruit punch, and sweet/unsweet tea can be put out to sip on. For the adults who want to make fun cocktails, go for on theme drinks like strawberry daiquiris, blue long island iced tea, and a refreshing watermelon sangria (or any flavor you prefer).

Main Course

The smell of the grill sets up the perfect vibe for an outdoor July 4th dinner. Grilling is an essential part of celebrating the 4th of July as it brings everyone outdoors for a nice, delicious meal. Classics like hamburgers and hot dogs topped with your favorite condiments can be enjoyed by the adults and kids. If you want to change it up, grilled steak or BBQ brisket sandwiches will feed the family!

Side Dishes

Side dishes can be very simple, but still add so much to a meal. To add to the patriotic theme of the day, a red, white, and blue fruit tray will be eye appealing on the table of food set up for everyone. Design strawberries, blueberries, and bananas into a flag or striped pattern. White cheese cubes can be substituted for the bananas if

needed! Turning to some classic side dishes, mac & cheese and a tasty potato salad is something everyone will scoop onto their plates. Make your favorite potato salad recipe or get one already made at a grocery store. Mac & cheese can either be simple as well, or you can go all out with extreme mac & cheese with different types of cheeses and toppings in it.

Dessert

The grand finale of July 4th is not only the fireworks, but the dessert. Whether it’s store bought or homemade, you can never go wrong with some delicious treats! Patriotic cupcakes, brownies, and cookies can be picked on and delicious for everyone. If you want to be more creative, fruit pops, chocolate covered strawberries, and blueberry pie can be hits as dessert too!

Now that you have a ton of ideas to go off of, it’s time to start gathering everything for your great 4th of July feast!

WORK

The past few years have seen a boom in co-working spaces, leaving consumers spoilt for choice. With so many options available, how do you choose the perfect co-working space that works for you?

With remote working becoming normalized during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen a massive boom in the number of coworking spaces worldwide. Remote workers now have the flexibility to choose their workplace without being confined to either traditional offices or their homes. As of 2023, there are currently over 19,000 co-working spaces available worldwide, and the numbers are growing rapidly. This growth then leads us to a pertinent question. Amidst the countless co-working spaces available, how do we make the ideal choice? In this article, we will be taking a deep dive into what makes or breaks a coworking space, and why these elements should be factored into your search.

1. Size and layout

One of the factors to think about when choosing a co-working space is the layout. As you and your team will be spending most of your day working e, it is best to consider how big you would like your shared space to be. Will your team be growing? Will there be desks to accommodate the new members? Will there be enough space for you and your team to work comfortably, and not feel stuffed and claustrophobic? Ask yourself these questions before signing a contract with a co-working space, and your team will thank you for it.

2. Amenities and services

What’s a co-working space without being able to utilize the countless amenities it provides? Whether you’re looking for a space with a recreational area and arcade machines or prefer an unlimited flow of caffeine, it’s important to find a space where you and your team can feel nourished and productive. You should survey the various co-working spaces in your areas and filter the ones that satisfy your working needs and habits.

If you’re a budding entrepreneur or a developing startup, you should also keep an eye out for any spaces that provide aid and services. Some coworking spaces have in-house staff that provide smaller businesses with digital marketing services, web hosting, and domain name registration. Some co-working spaces even have government-supported initiatives, granting startups some exemptions from corporate taxation.

3. Location and accessibility

The location is undoubtedly crucial when considering a co-working space. Just imagine finding the perfect co-working space that has its own in-house barista and nap rooms to rest your tired eyes, only for you to discover that it’s located in a rural area with no public transportation or lunch spots nearby. That’s why it’s important to keep the space’s location in mind. You wouldn’t want to end up commuting 2-3 hours every morning just to get to work in time.

It is also important to consider the space’s accessibility too. Does it have elevators? Can it support workers with disabilities? Is the general safety of the area good, and does the co-working space itself promote a safe and inclusive environment? Know your rights and ask these vital questions first before committing.

4. Ambiance and atmosphere

Another quintessential factor to consider is ambiance and atmosphere. Research has shown that good lighting, especially natural, increases energy and productivity. It’s important that the space has adequate lighting to avoid your team from working in the dark and harming their physical health. Exposure to natural sunlight triggers the release of “happy hormones,” also known as serotonin. Consider places that have floor-to-ceiling windows with plenty of natural sunlight penetrating in

for an additional mood boost!

The atmosphere of the space is also essential. Ask your team what makes them feel comfortable and find a co-working space that ticks those boxes. Some prefer a clean, minimalist workspace, with only monochromatic tones used in the decorations, while some opt for a Zen, homely feel. Either way, try finding one that fits your team perfectly.

5. Networking and community

Last to consider are the networking opportunities provided by your coworking space of choice. This consideration is fully dependent on your team. Are they comfortable working with a wider community or do they prefer to keep it within the company? Factor these preferences in when choosing a co-working space, as some spaces have mandatory regular events for their occupants, which can be bothersome if your team enjoys working undisturbed.

On the other hand, if you’re still growing your business, it is wise to opt for a community that is established. You can gain valuable insights into building up both yourself and your business through these connections. In times of need, you might even find that the community that you have been heavily involved in could become your most important asset.

It is essential to consider the factors outlined above before sealing the deal with any co-working space. Co-working spaces are quickly becoming a staple of the office landscape for most workers today. They provide individuals and businesses the chance to change their scenery and allows them to customize their working environment without requiring any expensive startup costs. Amidst the countless options available, the question remains: What would be your ideal co-working space, and how can you make your choice work for you? The Power of Youth Programs: Building Confidence and Character

Did you know that engaging children in youth programs not only builds their confidence and character but also sets them on a path to a healthier future? We believe in the transformative power of youth programs in shaping children’s lives.

Active Kids, Healthy Kids: It’s no secret that physical activity is crucial for children’s overall well-being. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children and adolescents who are physically active have a lower risk of developing chronic diseases, such as obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. By participating in our youth programs, children engage in fun and active pursuits, such as Youth sports, group exercise, and outdoor activities, which not only keep them physically fit but also instill a lifelong love for staying active. Research shows that children who participate in regular physical activity are 40% less likely to develop obesity-related health issues.

Confidence through Achievement: Youth Sports provide an environment where children can explore their interests and discover their strengths. Whether it’s mastering a new skill, scoring a goal, or delivering a stellar performance, each accomplishment boosts their confidence and self-esteem. The sense of pride and achievement gained through these experiences helps children develop a positive self-image and belief in their abilities, setting the stage for future success.

Character Development and Positive Relationships: Youth programs foster character development by teaching important values such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect. Through collaborative activities, children learn to work together, communicate effectively, and appreciate the diverse strengths of their peers. These experiences cultivate strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to form positive relationships, which are crucial for personal growth and success in all aspects of life. Research published in the Journal of Youth and

Adolescence found that participation in extracurricular activities positively influenced the development of pro-social behavior and academic achievement.

Setting the Stage for Lifelong Habits: Engaging children in youth programs sets the foundation for lifelong healthy habits. When children experience the joy of being active and the benefits it brings, they are more likely to continue leading active lives as adults. By instilling a love for physical activity at a young age, we empower children to make positive choices regarding their health and well-being, leading to a lifetime of better physical and mental health outcomes.

Youth programs not only build confidence and character but also promote active, healthy lifestyles in children. By engaging in active programs, children experience the joy of physical activity, gain self-confidence, develop crucial life skills, and set the stage for a healthier future. Join us in empowering our youth to be active, confident, and resilient individuals who will thrive in all areas of their lives.

Avalon Park Pickleball Update

The 27th South Village Pickleball Tournament was held June 2, 2023. We had 12 players playing 6 games each to 11 points, each game with a different player in a modified Round Robin format. Players ranged in age from 11 to 75 years old.

Pizzas were delivered to the courts by the Avalon Park Pizza Hut, and each player donated anywhere from $1.00 to $5.00, or whatever they wished to donate or not donate. Some players brought cookies and other snacks for everyone to enjoy. Friends and family members

were encouraged to bring a chair and a beverage and come watch. After each player had played 6 games, we added up the individual game points for each of the 12 players, and then had a playoff among the top 4 point earners. Sheila Harvey had a perfect score of 66 winning all 6 games to 11, and in an exciting playoff with teammate Corey Coljeski, they lost to the doubles team of Bonnie Walker and Matt Salamon. Pictures attached of the winners and a group picture.
