EDITORS LETTER With AVA we are creating a magazine with editorials from all over the world, and in creating a theme to embrace all the diversity we have to think big. Only in this issue we have photographers from Sweden, Lithuania, USA and Austria, only to mention some. There are many things that makes style and approach to photography and fashion different around the world, but also so much that connects us. In this issue we wish to show ”whats out there”, and continue to present young photographers vision. The term infinity is an abstract concept describing something without any limit, and we thought ”The Infinite Issue” would go great with our mission to promote diversity and quality. Here in Norway we are closing in on summer, and for the five of us here at AVA, our education is soon over. We are all students at The Norwegian School of Photography in Trondheim, and will be facing the exciting possibilities and hardship that comes with creating a career for ourselves.

We restarted AVA during our time at school and neither of us have ever photographed as much as we do right now, so I think I can speak for all of us when I say its a bittersweet feeling soon being ”on our own”. We have ambitions of continiuing with AVA and are looking forward to the challenges that may come with being spread across the country. Take your time, and have a look through our latest issue! And for those of you in our hemisphere, have a great summer!

JINGYU LIN First, who is Jingyu Lin? I’m a fashion and beauty photographer based in Chicago, Illinois. I’m actually a student right now in university studying in the health field while pursuing my photography career on the side, but I intend on making it my full-time job once I graduate. My professional name is Jingyu but I often go by my nickname, Jean. How and why did you start photographing? I started photography when I was 14 because I needed a distraction from a boy that I was heartbroken over. It’s rather embarrassing. At the time, I shot my friends and family members under the genre of “conceptual portraiture”, which involved a lot of photoshopping floating objects and stitching together separate images. I switched my focus to fashion after coming across a few very small indie fashion magazines and completely fell in love with the imagery I found inside. It was the first time I had ever looked at an image and thought “wow, I wish I had taken that photograph”. What is your biggest inspiration when it comes to photography? Fashion week is definitely a huge influence for me. I always find myself madly inspired by the vibes that come with the new collections, which usually ends in me staying up all night making moodboards for future shoots. I’m also chronically addicted to music (there’s hardly ever a moment in the day that I’m not playing it), and when I hear something that I particularly love I’ll emulate the feeling I get when I listen to it into a shoot. I own a massive collection of European and Australian fashion magazines as well, so that’s always a great source of visual stimulation.

“...I just want to spend the rest of my life doing exactly what I am now – photographing and being visually creative”

What would you say is characteristic about your style of photography? Simplicity. I like to add just enough to my images to be able to get the point across and avoid overcomplicating things – I firmly believe in the saying “less is more”. Oftentimes I find myself drawn to these beautiful monochrome portraits of models that have very little to do with fashion. The strangest thing happened during a photoshoot, tell us about it? A few months ago I had the opportunity to photograph my favorite musician, Madeon, for a feature on Bullett Magazine and during the shoot his manager recognized me from all the times I’ve been front row for his shows! I was shocked and a little embarrassed. What is your biggest dream? I’d love to be a regular contributor for i-D Magazine and a few other European-based magazines like AnOther and Dazed & Confused. I love how London really captures the spirit of youth. Another dream of mine was actually to photograph the aforementioned musician, which was an amazing experience. Ultimately, though, I just want to spend the rest of my life doing exactly what I am now – photographing and being visually creative.

MARIUS KNIELING Tell us about yourself, who are you? I am a 23 year old media design student from a small town in germany, who is trying to improve his skills in photography. Right now i have been studying for two years and there is still one year left. I am already looking forward to the time after my studies, when it is possible to really concentrate on me growing as a photographer. How is a normal day in your life? Actually I don’t have a normal day in my life, because everything is a little bit unstructured right now. Some days are filled by university and the other days i have time to work on new projects. What made you start taking pictures? I was interested in the whole business for a long time, but needed the push and the courage to finally start expressing myself by pictures. So i bought my first camera and started to portrait my friends and family. From there on it took some time to find my personal style and it’s still in the process.

Do you have a favorite photographer? Who and why? If i had to choose my favorite photographer, it would be Peter Lindbergh. His portraits are unique to me, because of their simplicity and expression. The whole process, how he is working is really inspirational to me. What would you say is characteristic about your style of photography? My favorite style of photography is naturally clean and straight. That’s why i am working with a simple storytelling by using a minimalistic mood. Do other photographers influence you in any way? Actually i really look a lot at other photographers work and in a way they obviously do influence me. And you have to look out for inspiration, but don’t try to copy a style or maybe even the whole picture. Just create your own mixture and your own language.

“...I really want to have my own studio, with big big windows. But the most important thing is, that i still love what i am doing, then everything is fine

In ten years, where do you see yourself? I will definitely move to a bigger city, maybe in germany, maybe not. And there i really want to have my own studio, with big big windows. But the most important thing is, that i still love what i am doing, then everything is fine. I just need my friends, my family and my camera.
