letter from the editor First of all, I just want to thank you for all the lovely words, views and encouragement on the first issue of AVA. It means so much to us! AVA magazine was at first just a little project my bestfriend and I started for fun. But now, it is so much more. It has turned into something big and exciting. I can’t help but smile when I realize what we have achieved. We have worked for hours towards finalizing this issue. It feels great to see what we have created together. We now open our mail for submission to our next issue, The December issue with the theme Winter. From now on AVA is not only looking for photographers and writers, we are also looking for submissions from artists, bloggers, designers, musicians, lookbookers and more. Keep submitting, and be apart of the journey towards finalizing the December issue! We can’t wait to hear from you! regards,
ida fiskaa editor-in-chief

My name is Ida, and I’m the editor-in-chief of AVA magazine. I’m a sixteen, soon to be seventeen years old Norwegian girl. You could describe me as a clumsy redhead with a big passion for photography. I started taking pictures when I was twelve, and now photography is all I do. I’m also an adventurer and I would love to travel the world. My main role as editor in chief is to put the whole magazine together. I design many of the pages, and choose the content for each issue. I keep track of everything. “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about dancing in the rain.”

My name is Joanna and I’m the co-editor of AVA magazine. I’m half Irish and half Greek seventeen years old girl but I have been living in Norway for the past four years. I don’t really have a special hobby but i enjoy listening to music and watching films. As co-editor it’s my responsibility to gather information and contact young talented people. I also help to design some of the pages. “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.”

Jessica
Sidenros is a 19 years old girl originally from a small village in the south of Sweden, but today she is living in Gamleby where she studies photography. She likes summer, music, red wine, old stuff from the 60s, travelling, festivals, vintage, dancing nights, friends, family and love.
What fascinates you by photography? I love the way a camera can capture a moment, before it’s gone. How you can keep that moment forever on a piece of paper. How you can create something fantastic and then capture it even more fantastic. What words describes you as a photographer? Rousing, looking for the beauty of a human, playful, working on odd locations and very creative. Who is your role model and why? I have many role models but my first photography teacher, job initiator and mentor Emma Svensson (from Rockfoto), has been a great one. She has taught me a lot, but one of the most important things is, that anything is possible as long as you fight for it. She makes me believe in my self, and gives me fighting spirit.
What is your favorite childhood memory? Me and my little brother sliding down the stairs on mattresses, pretending it was a kind of a ship. And when we came down we were wrestling with each other like animals on the mattresses and pillows. Do you have a hidden talent? Yes, I am actually very god putting feelings down to words. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully dividing my time between Los Angeles, New York, London, and Paris. I definitely want to travel and shoot everywhere and everyone. Oh and of course shooting for the top fashion magazines and making good money!
Describe your dream photoshoot. Me and some friends (including photo team with models, stylists and MUA) on a roadtrip in America. Stopping on the road when location and light is amazing, Really capturing moments in real life and making fashion photography.
Any advice to other young aspiring photographers? If this i what you REALLY want, then take risks! You might not be famous, but you need to do everything to try working with what you want in your life. You just have one, then you really need to capture it and creative it in your own way.

Dean is a 20 year old self-taught photographer based in Los Angeles, but
he was born and raised in Southern California. He started his career as a photographer in July this year. He loves McDonals’s french fries, & he also loves to sing. Each of his pictures tells a story, with beautiful details. What fascinates you by photography? The feeling I get when I’m shooting and when the ideas in my head are materializing right before my eyes… that’s what fascinates me. The ability to convey feelings, emotions, stories, etc. just through one photo is amazing. What words describes you as a photographer? I would say fun, energy, fashion, beauty, minimal, and narrative.
Who is your favourite photographer? I have so many favorite photographers but I absolutely love Mariano Vivanco’s work. I love all his editorials. His work is just so beautiful and energetic but yet so simple. Who is your role model and why? There are a lot of people I look up to but most notably, Steve Jobs. He was determined, a hard worker, and thought outside the box. He was such an innovator and always knew what people wanted. I have a lot of respect for him. What is your favorite childhood memory? I don’t have a specific memory, but I think just being carefree and having no responsibilities is what I miss the most about childhood. A lot of adults are so uptight and are always worrying as the result of all the random things that come with being an adult. I don’t want to be like that as I grow older, I think its important to take things easy, do what you want to do, and just live life. Do you have a hidden talent? Hmmm, thats a tough question because I’m a pretty open person. But I can realistically bark like a dog… is that a hidden talent? Haha
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully dividing my time between Los Angeles, New York, London, and Paris. I definitely want to travel and shoot everywhere and everyone. Oh and of course shooting for the top fashion magazines and making good money! Describe your dream photoshoot. I would say fun, shooting a high fashion editorial with a beautiful landscape somewhere in Europe, styled by Nicola Formichetti, with models Sean O’Pry, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Francisco Lachowski, Miranda Kerr, Garrett Neff... I could go on and on haha.
Any advice to other young aspiring ph otographers? Shoot, shoot, shoot! W

ALISON TITUS were quite a few people in the park, giving me strange looks as “There I shot, so I pretended that wearing capes and lace dresses in public is perfectly normal and soldiered on. It was quite cloudy as I was first shooting, but just as I was finishing up the sun came out and there was a gorgeous sunset, so naturally I had to stay and keep taking pictures!

What fascinates you by photography? I’m completely in love with how people and locations can be transformed through a lens: how light shifts and changes them, how they can be captured in a way that removes it from its original surroundings or context, and becomes something else entirely. It’s like another universe. It’s beautiful - I love it. I could spend days looking at photos.
What words describes you as a photographer? Simplistic, probably a little obsessive, a perfectionist. To be honest, I don’t really think of myself as a photographer - just someone who takes photos. Who is your favourite photographer? I’m fond of so many artists and photographers, or (usually) favour an individual image over a collection by a particular person, so I could never pick just one. Some of my friends are very talented photographers, so it’d be hard to pick between them let alone anyone else.
Who is your role model and why? Ultimately, my parents. Through thick and thin, they have supported me and each other; they are my friends and my family, and without them I wouldn’t be the person I am today. What is your favorite childhood memory? When I was a kid, I lived on a beautiful little farm for about ten years. It felt like a magical place - a little bubble of perfect, with it’s cherry trees, curly willow and wild garlic in the garden. There were two ponds, and small orchard behind the chicken coop, and wild strawberries grew behind the house. I have very fond memories of exploring it, along with the woods and fields down the lane. I miss it very much
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I think it’s impossible to predict where I’ll be in two years let alone a decade - that’s a very long time! What I’d like, though, is to be content with where I am in life - hopefully living in or around London, and working in the art industry. My heart lies with cats and art, so if I have those two things then I don’t think life will have turned out too badly. Describe your dream photoshoot. A beautiful day with strips of sun and colour, long limbs and smiles, where it all comes together and everyone has a wonderful day. I love simple shoots - I’m a huge fan of extravagance, but I delight in the small things most of all. To capture youth and beauty in dwindling sunlight would be a dream.

Do you have a hidden talent? If I do it’s still very hidden!
Any advice to other young aspiring photographers? Be kind and considerate, and treat others how you’d want them to treat you. It’s important to remember that it’s ok to take your time and not to worry if things don’t advance as fast as you want them to. Believe in yourself and your ideas, and don’t be afraid to speak up if something isn’t working. It can very much be a case of trial and error, but every shoot is a valuable experience. I still get nervous no matter what sort of shoot I’m doing (regardless of it’s just the model and myself, or with a full team), so I’d tell any aspiring photographer that nerves are perfectly normal, just don’t let them get the better of you.

the glowing embers of autumn
“
The leaves blush and twirl from the trees, lining the world with crisp noise for the unsuspecting foot. The bonfires light the early evening light, the embers crackling towards the dusk-kissed sky. The smell of wood fills your lungs as you tread amongst the fallen apples. The sunflowers give their final curtsy to summer as the world settles to sleep before the snow comes.
