Arthur Jeffes, son of Penguin Café Orchestra founder Simon, has breathed new life into the beloved ensemble, assembling a talented bunch of musicians to keep the spirit of PCO alive. HERMETO PASCOAL & GRUPO Hermeto Pascoal, charismatic composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and musical visionary comes to Melbourne for the first time with his intoxicating blend of jazz, rock and Brazilian music. Described by Miles Davis as ‘one of the most important musicians on the planet’. Nicknamed the ‘Sorcerer’, Pascoal is as likely to produce a piece for kitchen utensils as improvised solos on keyboard or flute, making joyous, magical sounds inspired by the nature and people of Brazil.

DIEGO GUERRERO Singer, guitarist and producer Diego Guerrero looks beyond convention and history to fuse the passionate music and songs of flamenco with Afro-Cuban rhythms and the added spice of contemporary jazz. Born in Andalusia and now living in Madrid, Diego is recognised as a ground-breaking young innovator, twisting strains of tango and copla, salsa and jazz into flamenco, yet remaining faithful to the purity of the music’s essence.

LE TRIO JOUBRAN ASFÂR Celebrated virtuosos of the ud (or oud), Le Trio Joubran create superb music that embodies the great richness of Palestinian culture. Magnificent improvisations and rich subtle melodies are teased out on uds by brothers Samir, Wissam and Adnan, who are joined on percussion by Youssef Hbeisch. Between musical ecstasy and sumptuous silence, Le Trio Joubran carry their audience from elation to melancholy. Their celebratory performances are overflowing with emotion and their Melbourne debut will take your breath away.

JANE BIRKIN SINGS SERGE GAINSBOURG Chanteuse, star of film and stage, style icon and darling of the French new wave, Jane Birkin pays tribute to her mentor and former lover in a rare concert appearance: Jane Birkin sings Serge Gainsbourg. For more than a decade she was muse to the legendary French singer, songwriter and enfant terrible Gainsbourg. Many of his songs were written specifically for her (with that voice in mind) and given that they are mostly about love — love of her and with her — Jane sings them with a very real, if understated, passion. SHIVKUMAR SHARMA Shivkumar Sharma creates hypnotic, mystical and beautiful music that transcends time and cultural traditions. As a celebrated santoor player (a Kashmiri instrument similar to a dulcimer), Shivkumar produces a complex web of mystical sounds from the ancient 100-string instrument. In this special concert Shivkumar is joined by tabla virtuoso Yogesh Samsi and Takahiro Arai on tanpura (drone). ‘Astonishing artistry.’ The Age This performance is presented with support from the Government of Victoria, Arts Victoria and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

Riley Lee

THINK, DANCE, IMAGINE, FLY ‘Grand Master’ of shakuhachi Riley Lee comes to Melbourne for a rare collaboration with Imogen Manins, Tony Gould and David Jones. Drawing on their collective and diverse knowledge of music from around the world, the four musicians will weave melodic lines and layer musical textures while exploring music that will be at times meditative and haunting and at other times lively and energetic.
