AUTUMN/WINTER FASHION HITS THE RACKS! HERE’S WHAT’S ON TREND THIS SEASON Autumn is the time when trees shed their leaves. But not for us, it’s time to get cosy. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still look ‘cool’. Embrace the new trends that will keep you warm yet fashion-forward. For the guys, think chunky knits, layering and scarves. For the gals, navy and red are big this season, as is the old favourite – tweed.

Local label Tengdahl has been providing Brisbane women with glamorous and wearable fashion since 1997. The creative woman behind the brand, Julie Tengdahl, takes some time out to share her insights on everything from Brisbane life to motherhood. What is the best thing about being a Brisbane local? Having the opportunity of knowing, meeting and helping so many interesting women. A lot of my clients I have been dressing my whole career and I have loved seeing how they have evolved from students to wives, mothers to business women, and in a lot of ways I have grown with them. I have also loved being a part of Brisbane’s recent growth and development, and I find the sense of community is exciting and dynamic. What do you think is unique about Brisbane?
Julie Tengdahl in her Brisbane Arcade Store, Tengdahl.

It’s the people who make a city special and unique. Brisbane people reflect our cultural diversity, have a natural humility and have a fantastic sense of humour and loyalty. Our city’s unique recipe for success is evident in the disproportionately large number of elite athletes, artists, actors, academics and entrepreneurs we produce.

JULIE TENGDAHL
Brisbane is ever evolving and that’s what keeps me passionately in love with this city. How does Brisbane stack up against other international cities? Yes of course it stacks up … but it’s still such a young city compared to the rest of the world. There is so much urban and cultural growth and it’s still expanding. Every great city grows organically from within the city centre and Brisbane is no exception; it’s ever evolving and that’s what keeps me passionately in love with this city. What’s it like working with your daughters? I love every minute! It never feels like working when the girls are with me. We enjoy each others company. I like hearing their opinions and thoughts on all topics. I am very respectful of their differences and needs. They give me a fresh look at things which keeps me focused. We all get
such a high when we see someone feel and look beautiful in something we designed for them. Do they plan to follow in your footsteps? The girls are both very creative in their own way and I know they are learning a lot about looking after people, being respectful and being good listeners. They also are picking up on the skills of running a small business. But Brigdette would love to pursue journalism in either fashion or food and Jemma wants to study in New York. So I will be happy to see them walk their own path. What’s your relationship like with your mum? Transcendent. I cherish every
moment with her. She is always a constant in my life. Mum taught me how to sew and gave me my love of beautiful fabrics. I have a lot to thank her for. Have you got any advice for other mums? I like to think that mother’s help lay the foundations for good instincts, love and integrity in their children, and that gives them the start to build their own lives. We should always be there to mentor and guide, not judge, our daughters and sons, and not trap them in fear. Your perfect mother’s day? Having the whole family with me and sharing a meal together. bnecity.com.au

AUSTRALIA we After months of anticipation are pleased to introduce the new Wintergarden! This integrated retail experience offers flagship boutiques, including Queensland’s first Coach and Sambag, as well as Tommy Hilfiger, French Connection and Ben Sherman, to name a few. Plus a new leisure precinct featuring Strike Bowling, Wagamama, Goodlife Health Club, Guzman y Gomez and a 750-seat food court. All we can say is – wow!

Christmas in The City was a time of excitement and colour when we introduced you all to the Christmas Parade and Pantomime, and we can safely assume you all loved it! This autumn we plan to give you even more reasons to come into The City (or at least stick around after work). We’ve got all the big celebrations covered – Autumn/Winter fashion, Easter, St Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day and much more – so mark your diaries!
