CITY FOLK Brothers Nick and Ben Chiu are the owners of Apartment. This unique menswear boutique i s a f av o u r i t e a m o n g s t fashionable well-travelled men, and brings a little bit of New York to Brisbane. Hidden away on Charlotte Street, we ventured up the stairs to find out more about these cool Brisbane lads… Why did you choose a location that’s off the beaten track? We like the challenge of enticing people to travel out of the way for a unique find. The shop was located on Elizabeth Street before we were flooded in January 2011, so we had to find a new space. When we found this spot it felt like the right fit and has actually worked out better. We love that we have a courtyard and we’ve even hosted a few New York style parties. It’s a lot of fun and we hope to host more. Who shops at Apartment?

Nick & Ben Chiu at Apartment.

NICK & BEN’S CITY PICKS : Coffee Laced Espresso, Adelaide St / Eat The Laneway, Mary St / Drink Super Whatnot, Burnett Lane / Shop Apartment (of course!), Charlotte St

Our customers are usually from Hong Kong, China and Japan and are dedicated fans of the brands we offer. But we also have a great following amongst locals. Usually guys that are well travelled or work in creative fields such as architecture and graphic design. People who see the small details in things and want quality products.

NICK & BEN CHIU

WE LIKE ENTICING PEOPLE TO TRAVEL A LITTLE BIT OUT OF THE WAY FOR A UNIQUE AND SPECIAL FIND. What do you like about Brisbane? It’s a super young city where there is a lot of opportunity. It’s like a time capsule of opportunity. If Brisbane keeps growing like it has been, then in 10 years things will pay off for businesses and residents. You just have to get into the game now. What are your influences? The store really only came about because I (Nick) lived in New York for six months. I fell in love with the culture and street lifestyle of the city. I got back and really missed it. I couldn’t move back, so we just created a little bit of New York right here. From sneakers, hip hop and the loft style of the store, we are trying to bring the NY lifestyle to Brisbane folks.

What’s on offer at Apartment?

How have you guys found working together?

We offer a lot of brands that no other stores in Brisbane do. And brands that just wouldn’t work elsewhere. They aren’t suited to every climate and are very niche. We stock internationally exclusive brands such as Carhartt WIP, Comme D e s G a r c o n s , A . P. C , D e l u xe , H e a d P o r t e r, Opening Ceremony and Neighborhood, as well as our own smart-casual inhouse brand APTMNT.

We’re almost one person. We a l w a y s j o k e t h a t combined we make one useful person. So it works we l l . We co m p l e m e n t each other and don’t a rg u e m u c h . We h ave plans to expand our store and our brand - APTMNT nationally and abroad one day. So it’s lucky that we enjoy working together.
