ART IN UNUSUAL PLACES
2012 FESTIVAL PROGRAM ARTANDABOUT.COM.AU
During September and October, Sydney’s streets and public spaces become a canvas for artists and performers to bring all the colour of their creativity to our city for Art & About. Art and culture play a vital role in creating an enticing, liveable city. We are developing a comprehensive policy to bring together the City’s work supporting cultural and creative activity as part of Sustainable Sydney 2030.
WELCOME TO ART & ABOUT SYDNEY
We know that great cities have great entertainment choices at night. Art has a big role to play in creating an inclusive and exciting after-hours economy, with diverse experiences for everyone to enjoy. Many of our Art & About events can be enjoyed after dark – whether it’s a walk through Hyde Park to see Sydney Life, a look back at Sydney’s past in Martin Place, or a wander through our laneways, fuelled by a delicious meal from one of the new food trucks operating in the city. There’s plenty to enjoy as all the colour of Art & About Sydney comes to our city streets and public spaces.

Play Lunch Gigs
The Great Crate
Get set for a month of music in unusual places as Art & About Sydney and Modular present a series of secret lunchtime gigs. Featuring Australia’s most buzz-worthy bands, these acoustic sessions will enliven the city’s most popular or undiscovered spots.
What is Green Square, exactly? What will it become? A giant cube has been created from recycled materials in front of Green Square station. Its ‘greening’ has been in the hands of the locals, who have been germinating broad bean seeds in preparation for Art & About. Check out the Art & About website for details of special celebrations and events to mark the birth of The Great Crate and join the fun!
For gig locations, like us on Facebook and we’ll reveal the place to be each Wednesday 5pm, or follow us on Twitter @artandaboutsyd
The Great Crate has been developed by Plus One, a collaboration of creative studios and individuals, including design studio Theodore & Associates, architect Andy Macdonald and curator Danella Bennett.

The Banner Gallery: In Colour Using bold colour blocks, Analiese Cairis’ stunning street banners are inspired by the work of Johannes Itten, a leading pioneer in contemporary colour theory, and author of the revolutionary The Art of Colour, published in 1961. Johannes wrote about the importance of colour in nature, art, science and technology, and adopted a series of basic shapes (the line, the plane, the circle and the spiral) as a means to begin the creative process. Artistic adviser for The Banner Gallery is John Kaldor from Kaldor Public Art Projects. Artist: Analiese Cairis

Emergence Every landscape hides countless untold stories... As night descends, the giant trees in Hyde Park South are illuminated. Faces emerge from the leaves and branches, revealing lives – past and present – linked to this beautiful green space in the centre of our city. The effect is haunting. As the branches sway, these ephemeral 3D monuments shift and change, responding to the park and its history. Presented in collaboration with the Australian Museum. Artist: Craig Walsh 10

Last Drinks Last drinks are being called at Sydney’s glamorous and long-gone Hotel Australia, and inside, the bar is busy. The creative team behind last year’s successful Unguarded Moments project return to Art & About to celebrate the boisterous good times of a bygone era. Wander the streets and put your smartphone to work, immersing yourself in the sights and sounds of the city when the Hotel Australia was the height of Sydney style.

Friendly Billboards You’re walking through the city. You pass an electronic traffic-control mobile billboard. No, you weren’t imagining it. Yes, it is smiling at you, or perhaps even telling you to put your feet up and relax. In fact, there’s a comfortable chair nearby. Looking and behaving like large-scale humanoid characters, Friendly Billboards reveals a whole new side to an object that will never again seem banal. Artists: Jasper Knight & Isabelle Toland 12

A Moveable Feast Sydney’s newest culinary sensation is taking over George Street for a unique evening of food, film and music to mark the closing night of Art & About Sydney, an annual festival of art in unusual places. A Moveable Feast gives you the chance to sample the wares of Sydney’s food trucks in one go as George Street shakes off its daytime hustle and bustle and is given over to you, free of cars and buses for one night only. You’ll experience George Street like never before as you graze your way from one food truck to another – each serving up its own delicious style of food, from Mexican to Japanese, vegetarian to barbecue.
Photo © Veggie Patch Van
A Moveable Feast also features films on a giant outdoor screen – shorts, documentaries and a feature film that focus on two of Sydney’s great loves – art and food. Add some of Sydney’s best DJs and you have the perfect combination of ambient tunes to chew to. So get your friends and grab a table in the middle of George Street for this special one off feast for the senses. Produced by The City of Sydney and presented with Crave Sydney International Food Festival. 20 OCTOBER 7.30PM – MIDNIGHT GEORGE STREET (PARK TO BATHURST), SYDNEY SQUARE
