Sydney Latin American Film Festival by Avant Card

Bienvenidos amigos to the 7th Sydney Latin American Film Festival! We have an impressive line up of new cinema from across Latin America. This year we have invited over 30 awardwinning Australian premieres from 15 different countries. As always, the Festival has pulled out all the stops & has put together not only a brilliant program but a fantastic selection of extra special events that showcase the rich cultural landscape that is Latin America.

Shot beautifully in black and white, Southwest takes us on a journey that challenges conventional perceptions of time and place. The City Closing night is a real treat with the film that has brought Cuban cinema back from the dead - literally. Juan of the Dead is not your ordinary zombie film, it’s a black comedy that turns Havana upside down - zombie-themed dress is optional.

The Festival opens on September 6 at the beautiful Dendy Opera Quays and runs through to September 16, closing at the Über-cool Bankstown Arts Centre.

Opening the Festival is the Australian Premiere of Mia, a striking new feature by Argentine filmmaker Javier Van de Couter. We are thrilled to have Javier as guest of the Festival to present his film.

Your festival experience continues in Bankstown with a focus on South America, including Uruguay’s highly acclaimed The Delay, Argentina’s Mount Bayo and closing our 10-day Festival Peru’s The Inca, the Silly Girl and the Son of a Thief.

In this exhilarating era of Latin American cinema, Andrés Wood (Machuca) returns with an outstanding adaptation of the life of Chilean heroine, Violeta Parra in Violeta Went to Heaven. The Chilean documentary Sibila reaches new heights with a bold exploration into the mindset of a convicted Shining Path leader.

Australia’s own filmmakers continue to raise the bar, so be sure to check out the Local Filmmakers programme. Our ever popular Microcinema is back, this time at the Addison Rd Centre and we continue our “alternative” film screenings at the MuMeson Archives.

Colombian cinema is standing out from the crowd with Choco, a film that epitomises female strength in a male dominated society. Venezuela has flexed its film industry muscles with action thriller The Zero Hour and its clever commentary on the abuse of power.

We are inspired by the diligent hands, hearts and minds of those who work vigorously to combat social inequalities in Latin America.

SLAFF’s Cine Barrio (Neighbourhood Cinema) program presents Latino film screenings and discussion at free and accessible venues in collaboration with diverse community groups across Sydney. Through Cine Barrio, we aim to ensure that the needs of local communities are being met by making these cultural events financially, geographically and socially accessible.

MICROCINEMA Addison Rd Centre Tuesday 11 September With the support of our good friends at Casa Latina, this year we present the Microcinema session at the Addison Rd Centre, bringing together film and panel discussion aimed at engaging deeply with issues presented in the film. Rivers of Men focuses on the future of water, unravelling the factors surrounding Cochabamba’s war over water. Screening followed by panel discussion.

MU-MESON ARCHIVES Wednesday 12 September We’re back at the Mu-Meson Archives presenting a back to back session of alternative cinema. Die Standing Up tells a personal battle against social and gender prejudice, while José Castillo’s Dreams takes a rare and intimate look into the works of Venezuela’s film animator extraordinaire José Castillo.

GUEST FILMMAKER The official guest of this year’s Festival is Argentine filmmaker Javier Van de Couter, Director of the City Opening Night feature, Mia. Javier will be visiting Sydney with thanks to LAN Airlines. Join us at the Q&A session following the Opening Night screening as Javier shares with us his experiences making his first feature film!

Ale is a vagabond transvestite existing on the fringes of society. She lives in a shanty town with other homeless gays and transvestites - they are ’cartoneros’, surviving by collecting and recycling rubbish from the streets. When Ale happens upon the diary of a woman who has recently committed suicide she becomes absorbed and entranced with its contents. Mia’s diary is filled with stories about, and dedicated to, her young daughter. Reading the diary, Ale feels maternal stirrings and takes it upon herself to return the diary to the young girl. Taking out this year’s Sundance World Cinema Dramatic Jury Prize, Violeta Went to Heaven is the extraordinary story of famed Chilean folksinger Violeta Parra. Tracing her evolution from impoverished child to national hero and international sensation, the film beautifully captures the swirling intensity of Parra’s inner contradictions, hopes and passions. Directed by Machuca’s Andrés Wood, this is an unconventional and beautifully filmed biopic of one of the most important and celebrated Latin American artists of all time.

In a small village at the edge of the world, a mother dies in childbirth and the baby is whisked away from the village by the attending midwife. The child grows but time remains motionless in the village. Clarice, it appears, is a special child. We bear witness to the strange unfolding of Clarice’s life in a single day as she encounters the local villagers whose reality is undisturbed except for the immediate loss they feel for her mother. With a dream-like quality, Clarice’s brief existence is set against an untamed, austere coastal landscape. Southwest is a mysterious and beautiful film that plays like a black-and-white fable, and which places director Eduardo Nunes in the ranks of indie auteurs to be watched.

Herlinda dreams of having her shop thrive and hopes for her brothers to return from the United States to rejoin the family tradition. An unexpected trip could crystallize this dream.

Ronald has only two concerns in his life: his job as a bicycle-riding local advertiser, and Lady, the forlorn object of his affection. In an attempt to secure both of these, Ronald earnestly seeks other job opportunities, finally attaining the promise of work outside his town, the marginalized neighbourhood of ‘El Paraíso’, Bogotá. However, his departure, like many others before him, proves ill fated. Based on true events.

Juan is a 40 years old loser who spends his days doing next to nothing. This is Juan’s life, that is, until strange things start to happen across Havana; the people are turning violent, attacking one another without cause. Juan slowly comes to the realisation that the attacks are not an act of the Revolution and that the attackers are not “normal” human beings. They’re not vampires, they’re not possessed and they’re definitely not dissidents. Juan hears opportunity knocking and decides on a somewhat unorthodox course of action.

We exist in a world where rainwater can be privatised. Mexican documentary filmmaker Tin Dirdamal took seven years to make this controversial documentary about the “Water Wars” of Cochabamba, Bolivia. Dirdamal, captures the story of the Wars as told by a mother who lost her son, a general under orders to send the army against his hometown, a young homeless man who became a hero and a single father who grows flowers. * Join us after the film for a lively panel discussion.

This is the inspiring story of Irina Layewska, a tireless fighter and advocate for personal freedoms and progressive causes. But when faced with a severe disability, Irina decides to undertake a personal revolution.

Delia is a hard-working young woman living in the slums of Caracas with her two sons. They are survivors to a devastating natural disaster that killed thousands of people, including Delia’s daughter, in the Vargas state of Venezuela in 1999. Concerned about the future of her children, who are increasingly becoming involved with crime and gangs, Delia resolves to do whatever it takes to ensure her children lead a life free from poverty and violence.

Olga, Teresa and Magdalena have been friends since they were born. After years of not seeing each other, a casual encounter leads the three to organise a weekend away at the beach. An irony-filled comedy, Lean Mean Cows unravels the complexities of unhealthy friendships that have long-passed their use-by date.

Petty rivalries and jealousies are bought to a head as the volatility of family dynamics brings out the best and worst in the sisters and their family. Academy Award nominee, Adriana Barraza, stars in this funny and gentle dramatic Argentine comedy.

Agustín forgets things; he is ageing and he knows it. María, his daughter, is a single mother of three and bears the sole responsibility for the care of her 80 year old father. In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict. After several years, travelling over five continents, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change. Cultures of Resistance celebrates the people standing up to exploitation and violence with artistic expression and creative activism.

Shunned by his family and friends as he desperately tries to re-enter society, Javier is forced into the fringes and moves into a boarding house. He has been released after 14 years behind bars, but in his tortured mind he is no closer to freedom. The boarding house becomes a place of refuge for Javier and fellow boarder, the youthful Amanda, his only friend. It is Amanda who encourages him to resume his “life” and reconnect with his now-teenage daughter - a daughter he hardly knows.

A wrestler in search of a place to live out his days, a waitress who dreams of an idyllic romance, and a young man who has been dishonoured by his father’s deeds flee their home town to chase down their dreams. Robbed of their proper names, The Inca, the Silly Girl and the Son of a Thief can only hope to break free from the epithets that have been imposed upon them. Along the way morals, tenacity and integrity will be tested - to succeed means defying the stigma of their names, but to fail means succumbing to a self-fulfilling prophecy.
