Award winning staff A Riverdale Court care home worker was honored at a glittering awards ceremony in November 2012. Alan O’Neill, from Abbeywood, received the Care Worker of the Year Award at the Great South East Care Awards Gala Dinner, at the Metropole Hotel, Brighton on Friday November 30th.
A
lan, who is a Team Leader at Riverdale Court, Welling, beat a strong field of nominees, demonstrating to the judging panel his dedication, high standards and awareness of the needs of those in residential care. Alan, 21 of Abbeywood started working for Avante Care and Support three years ago, following a career in banking. Alan said,
“I am absolutely delighted to win this award. It was a great evening and a fantastic feeling when my name was called out. I am pleased for the team and everyone at the home. This award is about the care our residents receive, and that is a team effort. I look forward to sharing it with my colleagues at Riverdale Court. I feel that in my three years at Avante Care and Support I have gained a very high knowledge in dementia, and progressed very quickly into my role as a young male carer. My favourite part of the job is turning a task into an activity, making the residents feel like they have a purpose. When I receive a smile from a person who finds it very difficult to do so, it really makes my day and reminds me why we do the job we do.” Next step for Alan will be the national finals in April 2013, in London, where winners from across the country come together to hear who has won the coveted national awards.

A day in the life of Yazz Nijjer,
Avante Community Support Out of Hours Administrator phones are always ringing but it is down to the Out of Hours to coordinate these calls and make sure every call is covered. The day normally flies by and before I know it I am writing up call logs and ready for handover to the next shift. Highlight of week ahead? I have been invited to attend a staff briefing for the 100 most influential staff members for the organisation, so I am very much looking forward to attending that and taking part!
Owl or Lark? I’m an early riser, definitely a lark!
Best part of your week last week? I was using up my Annual Leave as I need to use it up before March, so was making the most of having some time off, pottering around the house and spending time with my children and husband!
Daily alarm set for? Daily alarm set for 6am – In the Summer I try to get up earlier to go for a run!
Whats the best part of your job? Knowing that you are helping clients, reassuring and supporting them.
Tea or Coffee? Neither, I only drink hot water!
What would you say to someone who is thinking of a career in caring? They need to be compassionate and caring, it’s not for the faint hearted. If you have these skills it is the job for you, it is very rewarding and I get so much job satisfaction, I have been with Avante Community Support for over 7 years so it must be good!
What is a typical day for you? Weekend Out of Hours is an early start, arrive at office 5.45am switch on all the computers and then get myself a cup of hot water! The phones can sometimes already be ringing before 6am with calls relating to carers or service users. Carers pop in throughout the day to collect time sheets and equipment. The

ur Avante Community Support care workers cancelled days off, swapped shifts, car shared and generally all pulled together to make sure that all calls were covered and clients received their service. The Out of Hours service for Avante Community Support especially went that extra mile (which they so often do) by making sure that all calls were coordinated and covered, without them, this just wouldn’t have been possible – great work team, keep it up! Some staff at Avante Care and Support even stayed over at the homes to make sure all shifts were covered, including the cook at Amherst Court who didn’t want to risk not being able to make it in so he stayed at the home.
Thank you to you all!

Countdown to Christmas and New year activities from the team at Community Impact Christmas Crafts We started our Christmas craft activities at the beginning of December for our young people. This was an opportunity for our service users to express themselves through designing their own Christmas cards. There was a variety of designs and each was a way of individually expressing their images and scripts to their friends and family members. The young people also made individual presents which they designed such as Christmas stockings, candle holders and tree decorations. Some of the designs were so good, you would have thought that they had been bought rather than made.
Coffee and Chat At coffee and chat, (a drop in for parents and carers) we learned that Christmas is not always a good time for some. It can feel lonely for some if they have encountered separation or a loss of a loved one. Others expressed the pressures financially this time of year which one parent told us ‘can make you feel inadequate’. Our members of staff have taken these comments on board and are working on not only building our young people’s self-esteem and confidence but to remember that our parents are also sometimes needing additional support.
Christmas Party We had fun and games at our family Christmas party. Young and old alike were able to participate in games such as ‘Dress the snowman’ (an adaptation of pin the tail on the donkey), Christmas Bingo, find the Reindeers, Karaoke, and our Christmas quiz. One of our young people showed how much she had grown in confidence by being our quiz master. We provided a Christmas buffet to finish the party off. We received great feedback from all of our service users and it was a great opportunity to bring families together and play traditional games.
Fun and games Young people dropped in to our office at Cecil Square, to play Wii games in preparation to the big Christmas Family time and watched a Christmas movie together drinking hot chocolate and eating marshmallows.
Funky Dancing Workshop Pantomime We took our families to a local Pantomime ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. There was a lot of laughter and interaction and it was difficult to know whether to watch the production or the young people as some were off their seats shouting back at the cast ‘It’s behind you’, booing the wicked witch and laughing at the ‘tongue in cheek’ jokes. At the end of the show, some of our young people were lucky enough to be called onto the stage to participate in the song ‘Old McDonald had a farm’ and provide their version of animal noises. So you never know, we may have future stars in the making! At the end of the show, the cast were happy to pose for photographs with the young people. A magical day for all!
Young people and their families have been invited to come along and enjoy our Afro Latin Fitness class to have fun and learn some funky moves and spend quality time together, the class was run by a local Margate Fitness Instructor, some parents who never tried this before have enquired about how to continue attending fitness classes in their local Community
Girls Group The girls had a great time taking ownership of the space they use and meet every Wednesday by decorating it and putting up a lovely Christmas tree and lots of Fairy lights. The girls then sat around the table together chatting and making lovely gifts for their family and loved ones
Cook and Eat
Newington Drop in
Young people, came to our Cooking Workshop based at Cecil Square and enjoyed decorating Cookies! We had some very creative designs, we encouraged young people to give cookies to family members and friends but of course a few had been munched before the end of the session.
December has also been the month when we inaugurated our first outreach visit to the Newington Community Centre. The first drop in just prior to Christmas gave the team an opportunity to engage with the Youth of Newington estate, getting to know them and finding out more about the needs in the area.

The Charity that just keeps giving!
Throughout 2012 the organisation has been involved in many activities to raise valuable funds for other charities as well as our own, see below a few fundraising activities that have recently taken place.
W
ell done to the team at Northbourne Court who raised £80 for Wear it Pink day – their fundraising included ‘guess the babies’ game and baking and selling home made pink cupcakes. A big thank you also to Carole Bolton who is a volunteer at Northbourne Court who came in to help support the day and Dorren Barrett who came in on her day off to help bake the delicious cup cakes! Great effort Northbounre Court! Head Office staff also joined forces to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness. Staff at De Gelsey House dressed up in pink and held a pink tea party on the day to raise over £100 for the Breast Cancer charity.
Head Office staff at Avante Partnership, visited the Townsend Montessori Nursery in Faversham to donate a large fresh fruit basket for the children to enjoy at their Christmas parties.
T
he Townsend Montessori Nursery is rated ‘Outstanding’ by Offsted and cares for up to 95 children, aged between 3 months to 5 years, with 20 staff and is privately owned.
Business Development Director, Michelle Ford, and Managing Director, Stepahead Support, Carolyn McVittie, met with Karen Dadson, the Nursery Manager, to hand the basket over. Children Jayden, age 4, and Florence, age 2, joined staff for the presentation. Karen said;
“It is so lovely having healthy options donated for the Christmas parties and I know the children will enjoy them, it is also good to share in the close knit community spirit we have in Faversham”.
Thank You! 12

ROUTE 25
Christmas lights switch on On Wednesday 28th November 2013, Route 25 held an open day to officially switch on the Christmas lights within the centre. Route 25 is a valuable drop in centre for young people aged 11-21 providing a variety of support such as information on housing related issues, one to one advice, supper club, shower/laundry facilities and counselling
T
he Christmas lights switch on event was provided to give some Christmas spirit to the young people who attend the centre, a 7ft Christmas tree was very kindly donated by Garden House Orchards, Saltwood and the decorations and lights were very kindly donated by Dobbies Garden Centre, Ashford. The event was a great success, and was great to see so many of our young people come along to the open day and take part. Jane Loudon, Trustee at Avante Partnership, was there to open the event and switch on the lights as well give out prizes to those who had made decorations for the Christmas tree. Local Community Support Officers popped in to show their support and have a quick game of table tennis! It was great to see the support of the local community and we would like to thank all those that helped the afternoon go so well.
From the Route 25 Team
It’s the taking part that counts !!!
Following the Snack and Chat meetings held during the summer of 2012, we received a wide consensus from staff that they would like to receive more reward for all of their hard work. Having listened to staff, we set up and commenced the Avante Reward Scheme which upon its launch ran a competition for which included prizes of a £100 “One4All” gift card and Complimentary Invitation from Salon Evolution, (a choice from a variety of treatments from a variety of hair & beauty salons). We are pleased to announce that Elaine Cox, Payroll Manager at Head Office has won the £100 gift card and Ami LeighBarrington Hunt, Team Leader at Hevercourt has won the Hair and beauty Gift treatments – Well done ladies, enjoy !!!

Community Engagement Staff Volunteering – A Dig for Victory Avante Partnership is keen to explore Employer Sponsored Volunteering in our organisation, where appropriate. This means staff being offered the opportunity to engage in some volunteering activity either within Avante services or for a bona fide charitable cause elsewhere during working hours.
A
big thank you to Eric Mellin, HR Advisor and Darren Carrett, Quality Assurance Administrator from Head Office for being the first to volunteer in the employer sponsored volunteering scheme. Eric and Darren volunteered to help dig out an area of turf and prepare 2 flower beds in the grounds of Amherst Court, to provide an area for the residents to enjoy soft fruit and wild flowers. On a grey, damp Autumn morning, Eric and Darren wielded their forks and spades for several hours to leave two fine beds, much to the delight and appreciation of staff and residents. Eric and Darren enjoyed their volunteering experience;
‘It felt good to contribute something directly for the benefit of the care home and for the residents and helps us to feel involved’.
Eric says
Judging from the number of staff who went to see what was going on and various conversations, this was a breaking down of barriers, in a way, between care home staff and perceptions of Head Office staff. Regular cups of coffee, tea and lunch in the Calypso Café were on hand to sustain and reward our valiant landscape artists. If any staff within our services identify a task that can be done in a day or a few hours by volunteers with Avante Partnership, please let Philip Moore, Community Engagement Manager, know and he will see what can be done.
Using performance activities such as song, dance and movement, story telling and sensory activities the whole group was transported to different times and places. They went to the seaside, a film premiere event, the circus and other exciting places.
Bright Shadow
B
14
right Shadow is a performance company; one of their major priorities is to work with residential homes running long-term participatory performance projects with people with Dementia. At the end of 2012 Bright Shadow ran a project at Parkview Care Home, Bexleyheath engaging up to 15 residents and staff from other local Avante homes, in a series of participatory sessions focusing on group experiences and imaginary journeys. Between January and March this year 6 of our homes have benefitted from this project.
Bright Shadow passionately believes that participating in performance-based activities is extremely beneficial to a person with dementia.
‘Our practical experience in this field has shown that engagement in participatory performance projects that utilise contemporary performance techniques can significantly improve a person with dementia’s emotional and social wellbeing’. Each project includes a staff development programme so that this kind of activity can be continued by Avante staff in all our homes into the future. Evidence shows the residents have really enjoyed themselves.
A Royal Tea Party C
ourtesy of the Not Forgotten Association, a valuable Avante link organisation, one of our ex service veteran Community Support service users, Mr Dennis Hookey and his son Martin, were privileged to attend the NFA’s Annual Christmas Tea Party in the State Apartments of St. James’s Palace on 6th December last year in the presence of the Patron HRH The Princess Royal. HRH Princess Anne visited the guests’ tables speaking to veterans of all three services, from those injured in Afghanistan to those who had fought in WWII. More than 330 guests enjoyed a delicious tea in the magnificent Throne, Entrée and Queen Anne Rooms. Tables were hosted by celebrities, VIP guests, Not Forgotten
Association Presidents, Trustees and members of staff. During tea all were entertained by magicians, caricaturists, balloonists, ‘Haurel and Lardy’ and Father Christmas himself, with music from The Brass Quintet from the Band of the Coldstream Guards. Following HRH’s departure, a piper led everyone into the Picture Gallery for the afternoon’s concert. Including comedy provided by the Revd Canon Roger Royle and Carl Schofield who performed his hilarious ‘Not Forgotten Rap’. The whole afternoon was a huge success which brought fun, joy and enjoyment to hundreds of guests of all ages, including Dennis Hookey who, despite his deafness, enjoyed a very special and memorable afternoon, escorted by his son, Martin.
ASDA Donation to Amherst Court
O
n the 15th December ASDA, Chatham, visited Amherst Court to grant wishes to the residents from the homes wishing well. Residents had recently wished for a trip out to the Royal Albert Hall, a visit to Kew gardens, Brompton Barracks museum, Chatham Dockyard, Wingham Zoo and lunch at the Malta Inn. Staff at Amherst Court are always looking for new activities for the residents to enjoy and take part in if they so wish and the residents enjoy choosing trips out too! Store Manager Keith Powell had heard about the innovative idea that Amherst Court had its very own wishing well, so decided to take a visit to Amherst Court and very kindly donated £500 to grant the wishes above. We would like to say a big thankyou to ASDA, Chatham, for their very kind donation and to local MP, Tracey Crouch who also attended the presentation.
Its behind you Philip!!!!
O
ur Community Engagement Manager Philip Moore engages with the community not only in the work place but in his social life too! In January you could find Philip strutting the stage dressed as Squire Wanalot in the local village panto at Ash. Philip says ‘People say I have don’t have to act to strut around as a grumpy old squire, are they right? You’d have to ask my colleagues I guess?’ …certainly not Philip!!!

State of the art elderly care facility comes to Plumstead Local residents may have wondered what was behind the large purple hoarding on Plumstead Common Road. The answer is a new care home for people living with dementia coming to Plumstead, in the shape of a state of the art facility, provided by Avante Care and Support.
P
reviously at this location, Plumstead Lodge was a long established care home offering specialist dementia care but the building was dated and Avante Partnership decided to re-build a new home, to be called Puddingstone Grange and will open in October 2013. The Building for the Future event, held on Friday 16th November was to welcome and thank all the partners who have helped make this happen. The CEO of Avante Partnership Cedric Frederick, thanked building partner Castleoak Care Partnerships and said how pleased they were at the progress so far and look forward to completion in October 2013. Councillor John Fahy from Greenwich Council said,
“It’s good to see Avante Partnership providing better services to the elderly and with the growing need we want to provide the services people need. I look forward to the opening in October 2013”.
We are pleased to welcome our first Admiral Nurse, Stephen Mason, to join the team at Avante Care and Support, to support family carers and people with dementia.
16
A
dmiral Nurses are specialist mental health nurses specialising in dementia. Admiral Nurses work with family carers and people with dementia, in the community and other settings. Working collaboratively with
other professionals, Admiral Nurses seek to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers. They use a range of interventions that help people live positively with the condition and develop skills to improve communication and maintain relationships. Established as a result of the experiences of family carers, Admiral Nurses are named after Joseph Levy who had vascular dementia and was known as Admiral Joe because of his keen interest in sailing. Stephen Mason joined the Practice Development Directorate on Monday 12th November to work across Avante Care and Supports residential care and support services. The role will involve supporting the transition for residents from home to our care homes for the dementia ‘journey’, supporting families and staff teams in dementia care and support. Stephen completed his BSc (Hon) degree in Mental Health Nursing in 2007 and the Advanced Diploma in Dementia Care in 2010. He is currently undertaking post-graduate studies with the Open University

esidents had spent the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day clearing one of our flower beds in preparation for our own Remembrance Service. They had also been busy making Poppy Wreaths and a lot of time was spent remembering loved ones who were no longer here. On Remembrance Sunday Residents from all over the home gathered to lay there poppies in dedication to loved ones, family, friends and all of those who gave their lives to our country. The flower bed is now dedicated to remembering those fallen and will stand pride of place in the garden all year round.
Health and Wellbeing in our care homes
N
utrition and hydration is a key topic at present. We know that those in residential care are more frail and are also more at risk from dehydration and malnutrition than the general population. We also know that food is central to our lives and looking forward to the next mealtime is about so much more than just food alone. The environment, the
support, the utensils, the people you sit with and the music all contribute to enjoying food, just as one would in a restaurant. These are all areas we have considered at Avante Care and Support and I would like to share with you some new recipes that are popular in some of our homes. This particular dish was one which I tried initially by having a taster afternoon at Amherst Court, with 16 residents. As a Nutritional Therapist, I am keen on this recipe as it is rich in Omega 3, which can be hard to get from many foods we commonly eat and which has many health benefits including supporting a healthy heart. Studies are currently underway to test the possibility that some fats could prevent memory loss and dementia. Fish is also a good source of protein and is easily digested for many with its tender consistency. The sauce is a flavoursome sauce which is sweet. We understand that sweet tastes are sometimes more favoured for a number of residents.
