MESSAGE Welcome to the pages of history as we celebrate Spectra Secondary School’s 10th Anniversary. In 2013, a team of enthusiastic staff led by Principal Krishnan Aravinthan embarked on a pioneering mission with a vision to innovate, redefine education, and provide an inclusive learning environment for technically-inclined students from diverse backgrounds. Ten years on, we continue to build upon the strong foundations laid by the pioneers with unwavering commitment. Over the years, Spectra has enjoyed close partnerships with parents and industries to organise enrichment programmes and work attachments for our students. These collaborative partnerships have left an indelible impact in our students, and broadened their understanding of work and life. From industry giants to local champions, their invaluable support has transformed our students’ mindsets, turning barren grounds into fertile landscapes. Our rooftop garden, once an empty canvas, now flourishes with life – akin to the countless hours of back-breaking work put in by staff to enable our students to bloom. Resilience is a hallmark of Spectra, and our staff, students and alumni exemplify this spirit. They have embraced adversity and turned it into a driving force for their success. Their stories, beautifully captured in this book, inspire us to keep pushing forward and upward. 十年树木,百年树人 – It takes ten years to grow a tree, but a hundred years to bring up a generation of good men. Our commitment to shaping lives, nurturing curious minds, fostering creativity, and achieving excellence remains steadfast. Spectra remains a

beacon of hope and cocoon for transformation, preparing our students for a skills and values-based future. This year, Spectra won the overall champions for the ignITE Skills Challenge for the first time. In another first for Spectra, Derinda Lim, Valedictorian and Spectran of the Year 2022, received the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Award for All-Round Excellence (Secondary). While the glittering awards certainly added glamour to the School’s ten-year achievements, there are also many other unsung student-heroes that have blossomed under the watch and support of our most caring staff. To this end, we must thank every staff, past & present, for making Spectra’s 10th Anniversary Celebrations especially meaningful. As we mark this significant milestone, ‘Forward Singapore, Upward Spectra’ reminds us of our raison d’etre. Together, we will always strive to enrich and uplift more lives. Thank you to all who have contributed to the School’s incredible growth over the last ten years. As we embark on the journey into the next decade, we recommit ourselves to the vow to provide every Spectran with an engaged learning experience that will enable them to lead a most fulfilling life. Happy 10th Anniversary, Spectra! Together We Can!

MESSAGE As we gather to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Spectra Secondary School, it is with immense pride and gratitude that I reflect upon our incredible journey together. Spectra’s inception was not the result of one individual’s vision; it was a collaborative endeavour that involved a multitude of voices and perspectives. From our pioneer teachers and Board of Directors to the invaluable input from students, parents, and our industry partners, our shared vision emerged. Our vision, mission and values embody hope, effort, and resilience, encapsulated by phrases like ‘It takes a Village to Raise a Child’ and ‘Together We Can!’ These principles laid the foundation for everything we have achieved, shaping our unique philosophy, culture, and ethos. We can all be proud that this vision is now a lived reality for all who work, study and play within our School. Spectra’s journey began with a small group of dedicated Heads of Department and teachers, during the planning phase, before our doors officially opened. These teachers were selected not just for their qualifications, but for their genuine care and passion to guide and develop our unique student profile. These staff are the heartbeat of our School, for the strength of Spectra was built upon them. They went beyond their duties, helping every student and believing in their potential even when the students themselves did not. The diverse talents and unique strength of our staff members enriched the teaching and learning culture in the School and led to numerous pioneering innovations in education. From providing learning devices for every student to the introduction of escape rooms for Mathematics learning, we have consistently strived to push boundaries and offer our students the best possible educational experience.

7

As the pioneer Principal of Spectra, I had the privilege of witnessing many heartwarming stories of student resilience and success and teacher sacrifices. One personal encounter that is etched in my memory was an encounter with a student who offered me a bar of chocolate. Expecting it was her birthday, I proceeded to wish her and that was when she explained that the chocolate was to cheer me, as she knew I was feeling low and not having a good week. Her empathy and sensitivity in that moment touched me deeply, and I was moved to tears. It was a humbling reminder that we, as educators, have much to learn from our incredible students. My heartiest congratulations to Spectra on her 10th Anniversary! Indeed, it is a major milestone in her short but eventful and memorable history. What started out as a school to help students in the Normal (Technical) course of study has now blossomed to be a school of distinction that nurtures, grows and inspires her students to be the best versions of themselves. The strong academic and co-curricular achievements are testament to the School’s growth and development over the 10 years. At Spectra’s establishment, we had aimed to expand the potential of our students and help every student shine to become someone special who can make a positive difference in the lives of others. That aim and dream is still burning bright 10 years on and will continue for more years to come. Here’s to a decade of excellence, and to many more years of illuminating the path of education with hope, effort, and resilience. Together We Can!

DEEVINESH

Shattering Stereotypes Deevinesh Jude Vincent Deevinesh Jude Vincent remembers his first day in Spectra Secondary School very clearly. Being part of the pioneer batch, there was an air of uncertainty, mixed with excitement, as he and other fellow students walked into the school hall. Spectra was a brand new school then, and facilities were still being built. Established just before Deevinesh and his peers entered its doors, this unique school focuses on fostering creativity, innovation, and a hands-on approach to learning that would equip its students for a rapidly-changing world. Deevinesh’s mother had chosen Spectra, after hearing that the School catered specially to Normal (Technical) students. CHALLENGING STEREOTYPES Like many of his peers at Spectra, Deevinesh faced the harsh reality of being stigmatized and underestimated due to the prevailing stereotypes associated with students from a Normal (Technical) background. He admitted that this initially affected his confidence and self-esteem. “I am a more hands-on person. I like fixing things rather than reading books.” Deevinesh, however, was determined not to be defined by these stereotypes.

was in these subjects that he began to discover his potential. “The teaching methods that Spectra uses are different. I used my hands more and that helped me understand concepts better.” Deevinesh remembers those initial challenges as crucial lessons in resilience and self-belief. Deevinesh was known for his playful nature and a penchant for soccer. “I was not focused in my studies, especially when I was in Secondary 1 and 2. I would rather have fun than study, and that got me into trouble at times. My teachers knew how mischievous I could be.” His days at Spectra were indeed filled with fun and camaraderie. He particularly cherished the mornings when the entire school would gather for assembly, which often featured engaging quizzes and games. Despite his fun-loving disposition, Deevinesh had dreams and aspirations.

During his time at Spectra, Deevinesh opted to specialize in Facility Services, including airconditioning and refrigerator repair. His decision was influenced by his fascination with machines and the prospect of mastering practical skills. It 20

SUPPORTIVE STAFF “I used to joke and tease my friends a lot, but the values that Spectra instilled in me and the supportive staff changed me,” Deevinesh shared. Deevinesh recalls the constant reminders of being respectful not just to the staff, but also to friends; being responsible for all the work that needs to be done; and not giving up even when the going gets tough. The faculty at Spectra played a pivotal role in Deevinesh’s journey. Teachers like Ms. Ong Denise Germaine, Ms. Koh Siew Khim Doreen, and Mr. Lam Shen Keong were not only educators but also mentors who recognized Deevinesh’s potential and encouraged him to focus on his studies. Their patience and unwavering support helped him realize the importance of dedication and hard work. The School’s pioneer principal, Mr. Krishnan Aravinthan, also played a significant role in shaping Deevinesh’s perspective. Mr. Ari, as he is affectionately known to staff and students, believed in every student’s potential and constantly reminded them not to give up. While he may have entered Spectra as a mischievous student, Deevinesh emerged as a young adult with a profound understanding of the School’s values of Responsibility, Respect and Resilience, which he says stems from the actions and encouragement from everyone in Spectra, including the non-teaching staff. “I remember going for an overseas field trip. This trip was only for selected students who tended to get into trouble. We went to a children’s home where we had to clean the home and put the skills that we have learnt to use. I didn’t know what the trip was

21

for at first. It was much later that I realize that Spectra was teaching us important values through that field trip.” That was a pivotal moment in Deevinesh’s journey at Spectra. The value of resilience, in particular, became a guiding principle in his life. It taught him to persevere through challenges and face adversity head-on. GRADUATION AND BEYOND In 2017, Deevinesh graduated from Spectra, equipped not only with academic knowledge but also with a strong sense of self-belief and the values instilled by his teachers and experiences at the School. He decided to continue his education at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), pursuing a Nitec in Mechanical Engineering. Deevinesh’s journey did not stop at ITE. He continued to work diligently and eventually secured a place in Republic Polytechnic’s Diploma in Aerospace Engineering. Today, Deevinesh continues to embrace the values and lessons he learned at Spectra as he pursues his dreams and ambitions. His journey from Spectra’s pioneer batch to the present day is a testament to the transformative power of education; the incredible potential that lies within every student, waiting to be awakened; and the supportive community that believes in nurturing and uplifting each child. “A number of my peers from Spectra are in the same polytechnic as I am, pursuing their diplomas now. I am proud to say that my peers and I have shattered the stereotype that people may have of students from the Normal (Technical) stream.”

‘People did not believe that we would be successful.’

IVAN

Breaking Barriers Ivan Sombrado Chiang Ee Onn From the time Ivan Sombrado Chiang Ee Onn stepped into Spectra Secondary School, he showed a keen interest in media and technology. Despite facing physical challenges, he did not let his disability define him. Instead, he embraced his passion and joined the Media Club at Spectra, where his expertise began to shine. One of his first notable achievements was putting together a captivating video showcasing the Spectran Games. “Looking at how hard my fellow Media Club members worked to take photos of the event, I just wanted to put them together to see the response it would receive.” Ivan’s determination and skills behind the computer were evident to all who watched the video. The positive response from his peers and teachers fuelled his enthusiasm even more.

THE ENCOURAGEMENT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING Ivan’s Year Head, Mr. Abu Sufyan Bin Bedin, recognized his talent and determination. Encouraged by the success of his video made on Spectran Games, Mr. Abu Sufyan challenged Ivan to create something even more ambitious—a video of the School’s anthem. This was a daunting task, for the School’s anthem is exuberant and passionate. Complementing it with images and video clips was going to require skill and deliberate effort. However, Ivan accepted the challenge wholeheartedly. He worked with Mr. Ismail Bin Kamarudin, who provided him with photos and video clips, to let Ivan work his magic on them. The final product was unveiled during a school assembly. The response from the audience was overwhelming. The video, with his editing and artistic flair, struck a chord with everyone present. Ivan recalls that moment with a heartwarming smile, saying, “When Mr. Abu Sufyan asked me to go on stage and introduced me as the person who created the video, I didn’t expect such a positive response. It made me believe in myself even more.’

24

BUILDING CONFIDENCE THROUGH CHALLENGES Ivan was not always the self-assured young man he is today. His experiences at Spectra transformed him from a shy boy into a confident individual. One significant factor was his involvement in the Vocational Education subject of Retail Services, where he had to make numerous presentations. These experiences challenged him to step out of his comfort zone, honing his communication and presentation skills. Ivan fondly recalls Ms. Wendy Lim Soo Ling, who played a crucial role in his personal development. “She not only provided academic guidance but also offered unwavering emotional support. Ms. Wendy kept reassuring me and believed in me.” This gave him the strength to overcome self-doubt and embrace his potential fully.

LOOKING TOWARD A BRIGHT FUTURE Ivan’s journey at Spectra was just the beginning. Today, he is pursuing Higher Nitec in Motion Graphics at ITE Central, further honing his skills and expanding his horizons in the field he is passionate about. Ivan designed the 30th Anniversary logo for the Asian Women’s Welfare Association’s (AWWA) Community Integration Service and was nominated for the AWWA Educational Achievement Award (Tertiary) and Young Talent Award (Arts and Sports). With his talent and determination, there is no doubt that Ivan will continue to achieve remarkable milestones in his life and career. Adversity can be a stepping stone to greatness, and with the right support and determination, anyone can overcome challenges and achieve their dreams. “My journey at Spectra would not have been possible without the support from the School community.”

AVINA

Embracing Inclusivity Avina Ester Yik May Ling ‘Thank You, Friend’ by Joanna Fuchs Thank you, friend, for all the things That mean so much to me For concern and understanding You give abundantly. Thanks for listening with your heart; For cheering me when I’m blue; For bringing out the best in me; And just for being you. Thanks for in-depth conversation That stimulates my brain; For silly times we laugh out loud; For things I can’t explain. For looking past my flaws and faults; For all the time you spend; For all the kind things that you do; Thank you; thank you, friend. This was the poem that marked Avina’s first-ever public presentation. Born with Trisomy 21, Avina Ester Yik May Ling never thought that she would one day feel comfortable speaking in front of a public audience. Not only has Avina presented before her schoolmates, she has also represented Singapore and spoken to an international audience at the World Down Syndrome Day in 2022.

A SCHOOL THAT WALKS THE TALK Avina’s remarkable journey would not have been possible without the supportive environment of Spectra Secondary School. The unwavering support of Ms. Nirmala D/O K Balakrishnan, Avina’s teacher in Secondary 1, prompted Avina to take a brave step into the spotlight. She stood before her peers during a Secondary 1 assembly, ready to recite a poem. It was a momentous occasion for Avina, marking her first-ever public presentation. The stage lights might have been intimidating, and nervousness initially gripped her, but as she began reciting her chosen poem, the applause and encouragement of her school mates filled the school hall, transforming her anxiety into excitement. At that moment, Avina realized the true power of self-belief and the support of a community. “Spectra is a school that walks the talk of diversity inclusion. Even though I am considered special needs, I was given equal opportunity as the rest of the students to excel. I gained more confidence after reciting the poem and I am now no longer afraid to speak or perform in front of people. I am as cool as a cucumber.”

Avina’s journey did not end with her poetry recitation; it was just the beginning. She went on to become a member of the Dance Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), a testament to her newfound self-assurance. Avina was no longer confined by the limitations others might have expected due to her condition. She was thriving, proving that talent and determination know no boundaries. The role of her form teacher in upper secondary, Mr. Lee Teck Meng, and the invaluable assistance from Mr. Asraf S/O Salavan and Ms. Hong Yi Huey Eva from the Bilberries Blue Lighthouse Youth Ambassadors programme, have all had a profound impact on Avina’s life. These dedicated educators not only guided her academically but also played a pivotal role in her personal growth. A LESSON IN PERSEVERANCE Avina lives by the quote, “Try and fail, but not fail to try.” Her journey serves as a lesson for all of us, demonstrating that with the right support and mindset, individuals with special needs can achieve remarkable things. Avina’s story showcases the importance of creating inclusive communities where everyone has

31

the opportunity to shine, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities. Avina’s journey from a shy, quiet student to a confident performer is a story of resilience, perseverance, and the power of a supportive community. Her experience at Spectra highlights the importance of an inclusive environment where every student, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities, can thrive and reach their full potential. Avina’s story is a reminder that with determination and the right support, individuals with special needs can overcome challenges and achieve their dreams. Her journey serves as an inspiration to all, encouraging us to break down barriers and embrace inclusivity in our schools and communities.

‘Never be afraid to try new things.’

AALIYAH

Rising Above Adversity Nurul Aaliyah Bte Mohamed Ali Khan Nurul Aaliyah Bte Mohamed Ali Khan joined Spectra Secondary School as a young footballer. Her passion for the sport and unwavering dedication quickly caught the attention of her peers and teachers alike. It was during her time at Spectra that Aaliyah experienced her first taste of international success. She represented Singapore in the Under-14 Girls’ National Team at the Jockey Club Girls International Youth Invitational Tournament when she was in Secondary 1. She scored her inaugural international goal, an accomplishment that was a testament to her hard work and perseverance. Little did she know that her schoolmates had a surprise in store for her. When Aaliyah least expected it, the staff and fellow students at Spectra organized a heartfelt celebration in her honour. Aaliyah recalls, “I remember walking into the hall. I thought it was a normal school day. When the goal that I scored was replayed, I was surprised. I didn’t expect that the School would celebrate my achievement.” The overwhelming support and recognition from her schoolmates left her speechless. It was a moment of pure joy and unity, as Spectra rallied behind Aaliyah in her athletic achievements.

FACING ADVERSITY HEAD-ON Aaliyah’s journey was not without its share of hardships. In lower secondary, she faced one of her most challenging moments when she suffered a major injury, tearing her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The physical pain was coupled with a sense of despair, and she found it difficult to muster the strength to continue going for soccer training sessions. “I didn’t want to go for surgery and wanted to stop focusing on football.” It was a time of great uncertainty for Aaliyah, and she wondered if she could ever recover both physically and mentally. Tragedy struck again when Aaliyah was in upper secondary. She lost her father to a sudden heart attack, leaving her and her family devastated. This unimaginable loss weighed heavily on her heart, making it extremely challenging to balance the demands of school and home. It was during these dark times that Aaliyah relied on the unwavering support of her friends and the caring guidance of her teachers. “Teachers like Ms. Hong Yi Huey Eva, Mr. Rajik Ahamed S/O Habeeb Mohamed, Ms. Chuminah Bte Abdul Rahman and Mr. Abu Sufyan Bin Bedin were my role models. They encouraged me, helped me grow and taught me to be stronger.”

34

THE STRENGTH OF COMMUNITY Despite the overwhelming adversity she faced, Aaliyah continued to come to school, thanks to the incredible support system she found at Spectra. Her friends, who had become like family, checked on her daily and offered a shoulder to lean on when she needed it most. Their friendship provided Aaliyah with the motivation to keep moving forward, even when the road seemed impossibly tough. Spectra became more than just an educational institution for Aaliyah; it became her second home. The sense of belonging and unity among the students and staff created a nurturing environment that allowed her to flourish despite the odds stacked against her. Every day, she was reminded that she was not alone in her struggles. A STRONGER AALIYAH EMERGES Aaliyah is now pursuing a Work-Study Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering at ITE College Central. Her journey in Spectra was marked by amazing highs and heartbreaking lows. Yet, it was during these moments of adversity that she discovered her own resilience and the unwavering support of her friends and teachers. The setbacks only served to make Aaliyah a stronger and more determined person.

ASHWINA

Overcoming Academic Struggles Ashwina D/O Mani Sangar

Life is full of challenges, and sometimes, we find ourselves facing hurdles that seem insurmountable. This was the case for Ashwina D/O Mani Sangar, a determined young individual who faced numerous academic struggles even while in primary school. Subjects like English, Mathematics and Tamil posed significant challenges for her. It did not help that Ashwina was afraid to ask teachers questions when she did not understand. THE EARLY STRUGGLES AND SUPPORTIVE TEACHERS After the release of her Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results, Ashwina made Spectra Secondary School her first choice, as she discovered that the School offered both academic and hands-on subjects. “Even though Spectra was my first choice, I was confused, scared and worried at first. I wondered if I could make friends because I had difficulty making friends in primary school.”

academic woes. “When in primary school, I dared not ask teachers questions or approach them for help, because I was just afraid. All these affected my understanding of the subjects.” One of the key factors that helped Ashwina navigate through these difficult times was the support she received from her teachers. Mr. Mohanadass S/O Jaganathan, Ms. Teo Siew Kuang, and Mr. Rajik Ahamed S/O Habeeb Mohamed stood by her side, patiently explaining concepts, providing additional help, and offering encouragement when she needed it the most. “In Spectra, the teachers are approachable. They are friendly and they make me feel comfortable around them. I started asking them questions to clarify my doubts.” Their dedication and belief in her potential played a pivotal role in helping Ashwina regain her confidence and motivation.

In her early years at Spectra, Ashwina found herself grappling with subjects that did not come naturally to her. Mathematics, in particular, seemed like a tall mountain to climb. She often felt overwhelmed by the complexities of the subjects and struggled to keep up with her peers. Moreover, her proficiency in English and Tamil also left much to be desired, adding to her 38

THE TURNING POINT: VOCATIONAL EDUCATION While Ashwina continued to struggle with traditional academic subjects, she discovered a new world through the Vocational Education modules offered at Spectra. The taster modules for Secondary 2 students allowed them to explore different career paths and interests. For Ashwina, the modules were a revelation. She found herself drawn to the world of Hospitality Services. Through these vocational modules and the Young Chefs CoCurricular Activity (CCA), Ashwina learned the art of cooking and discovered her love for creating delightful culinary experiences. More than just learning to cook, she was given the opportunity to host guests, introduce dishes to them, and engage in meaningful interactions. “I remember being featured in a publicity video to introduce Spectra. I donned my Young Chefs’ uniform and prepared a simple meal for the video. It was fun because cooking is something I really enjoy.” These experiences not only ignited her passion but also built Ashwina’s self-confidence.

With newfound clarity about her career path, Ashwina decided to pursue her passion for Hospitality Services. She understood that this journey would not be without challenges, but her determination and the support she received from her teachers gave her the strength to forge ahead. Currently, Ashwina is pursuing a Higher Nitec in Pastry and Baking at ITE College West, a decision that aligns perfectly with her passion and talent for culinary arts. She is thriving in her chosen field, and her journey from struggling academically to confidently pursuing her dreams is nothing short of remarkable.

AIMAN

Confidence Amidst Challenges Nur Aiman Bin Ahmad Raudha Adapting to a new environment is never easy, especially for someone who is introverted, has low self-esteem and adjustment issues. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 added a layer of complexity to such a transition for Nur Aiman Bin Ahmad Raudha. Just as he was settling into Spectra Secondary School in 2019, the pandemic forced students into Home-Based Learning (HBL), a significant shift that disrupted Aiman’s routine. PERSONAL TURMOIL The isolation during HBL took a toll on Aiman. He missed the face-to-face interactions with his schoolmates, and this loss of connection made it challenging for him to stay focused on his studies. As a result, he found himself spending more time playing video games than studying. “I found that playing video games helped me cope better. It became my form of escapism.” HBL was a struggle familiar to many students around the world during this challenging time, and it was no different for Aiman. Adding to Aiman’s personal challenges, his younger brother was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma cancer. This devastating news left him with a heavy heart, and he often found himself overwhelmed with anxiety and overthinking. “I didn’t tell any of my friends about my brother’s illness because I was afraid I might lose him. I kept everything to myself.” He felt more isolated, with no one to turn to or share his emotions with. Aiman’s mother was preoccupied with caring for his sick brother, his father was busy working, and his younger sister was too young to understand the gravity of the situation.

42

BALANCING ACT Aiman’s responsibilities grew as he had to juggle his Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), school work, and looking after his younger siblings. He found that he did not even have time for himself. The weight of these responsibilities could have easily crushed him, but Aiman remained determined to persevere. He had high expectations of himself, and he knew he could never give anything less in whatever he did. Even though giving up was close on his mind, the realization that his younger siblings looked up to him as a role model became his driving force. “My brother inspired me to be resilient.” Throughout this challenging period, Aiman found guidance and support from two teachers, Mr. Asraf S/O Salavan and Mr. Lee Teck Meng. They recognized his struggles and consistently offered valuable advice and encouragement. Their unwavering support provided Aiman with a lifeline during his lowest points, giving him strength to carry on, and reminding him that he was not alone in his journey.

THE POWER OF DANCE Despite the trials he faced, Aiman’s passion for dance remained a constant source of motivation and strength. He was actively involved in the Dance CCA at Spectra, where he discovered his talent for choreography. Aiman found joy and took the initiative to choreograph various dances for school performances. One of his most memorable creations was for his cohort’s graduation day. This choreography was particularly difficult, as it combined hip-hop and Bollywood dance styles. However, he embraced the challenge and poured his heart and soul into creating a mesmerizing performance that left a lasting impression on everyone who witnessed it. This accomplishment not only boosted his confidence but also affirmed his ability to overcome adversity. Today, Aiman is pursuing Higher Nitec in Electronics Engineering in ITE College Central. Through his determination, the support of caring teachers, and commitment to his responsibilities, Aiman has come out stronger than before. He has transformed from an introverted and self-doubting individual into a confident and outgoing young man.

HANAFI

Dreams Take Flight Mohamed Hanafi Bin Mohamed Akbar Mohamed Hanafi Bin Mohamed Akbar has always dreamt of becoming a pilot. That dream has always burnt brightly within him, even during his early schooling years. He was captivated by the idea of soaring through the skies, navigating the clouds, and experiencing the thrill of flight ever since he was introduced to aeroplanes by his grandfather. However, when he found himself enrolled at Spectra Secondary School, he began to doubt whether his dream could ever become a reality.

student councilor, Hanafi was thrust into a leadership role that forced him to confront his shyness. Hanafi quickly realized that he had to adapt to new challenges and develop crucial leadership skills. He learned to communicate effectively, manage conflicts, and work as part of a team. These experiences not only helped him grow as a person but also boosted his self-confidence.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP TRAINING Shyness was a constant companion for Hanafi during his early days at Spectra. He found it challenging to speak up in class, and engage with his peers. It was a time of self-doubt and uncertainty, which seemed to overshadow his dreams of becoming a pilot. “Being in the Normal (Technical) stream, I was not sure I could become a pilot anymore. I thought all pilots needed to have good academic background. I started to wonder how I could still make my dream come true.” Hanafi decided to challenge himself by running for a position as a student councilor. This decision, while intimidating at first, would prove to be a game-changer. As a

TAKING FLIGHT: PURSUING THE DREAM One of the most memorable and transformative experiences for Hanafi was his involvement in the student council. Being a student councilor required him to make presentations and lead his team of student councilors. “I had to do my student council duty daily. The duty might be considered trivial to some, but to me it helped build discipline.” Throughout Hanafi’s student leadership journey, he faced various challenges that pushed him beyond his limits. He learned to adapt to unfamiliar environment during a student leadership training programme in Hong Kong, and make quick decisions under pressure. These experiences not only strengthened his leadership skills but also instilled in him a newfound resilience. Little did Hanafi realize that the valuable insights and global perspective he gained as a student councilor would prove invaluable in his future endeavours, especially when he had to go to Australia to qualify for his Recreational Pilot Certificate License. Hanafi’s journey from a shy student to a confident leader was made possible by the support and encouragement of Spectra staff, especially Mr. Tengku Muhammad Hafiz Bin Engku Kamil, and his family. “Mr. Hafiz motivated me a lot during my time in Spectra. His advice to me was to never give up on my dreams and to dare to dream big and bold.” His family stood by him, believing in his dream and encouraging him to pursue it relentlessly.

With the newfound confidence and skills acquired through his experiences at Spectra, Hanafi finally felt ready to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot. He enrolled in a private flying school in Australia, where he began his rigorous training to earn his wings. “I am grateful that my teachers and the School supported me not just when I started going for the aviation course when I was in Secondary 3, but also during the three weeks of training I had in Adelaide, Australia. Spectra is a school that encourages students to step out of their comfort zone and be bold.” Hanafi graduated from ITE College Central with Nitec in Aerospace Technology and is currently pursuing Higher Nitec in Mechanical Technology, a course he hopes can help his dreams take flight. He is now well on his way to achieving his goal of soaring through the skies and living his passion for aviation.

KAITLYN

Inspirational Leader Kaitlyn Ong Along the corridors of Spectra Secondary School, Kaitlyn Ong was once just another face in the crowd. Shy and introverted, she struggled to connect with her peers and often found herself battling anxiety when it came to social interactions. STRUGGLES OF AN INTROVERT Kaitlyn’s early days at Spectra were marked by her quiet nature and a sense of unease when it came to interacting with her peers. The bustling school environment, filled with enthusiastic classmates and a myriad of activities, left her feeling anxious and isolated. It seemed like she was taking an eternity to adapt to her new surroundings. One day, her teacher noticed the potential hidden beneath her quiet exterior. Recognizing her innate leadership qualities, Kaitlyn was selected to be a student councilor. It was a role that filled her with a mixture of excitement and trepidation, as she wondered whether she was up for the challenge. “My teacher suggested I be a student councilor in the hope that it would help me be less awkward when interacting with my cohort mates. I thought it was an interesting idea and decided to go for the interview.”

The early days of being a student councilor were tough for Kaitlyn. She struggled to overcome her shyness and make connections with her peers. As the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, she felt like giving up. Kaitlyn questioned her ability to make a difference and wondered if she was cut out for leadership at all. She believed she was making no progress. “After I was accepted to be a student councilor, I expected myself to change. However, that did not happen. I was still shy and introverted. I told myself that maybe it’s time for me to quit.” Then came a life-altering experience— an opportunity to participate in a student leadership trip to Hong Kong. This journey would prove to be pivotal in Kaitlyn’s personal and leadership development. In Hong Kong, Kaitlyn found herself in a foreign land, surrounded by unfamiliar faces and a culture somewhat different from her own. It was here that she had an epiphany: to navigate this unfamiliar territory, she needed to depend on others. This realization led her to break out of her shell. She began to open up to her peers during the trip, asking questions and sharing experiences.

52

PERSEVERANCE PAYS OFF The transformation was palpable. Kaitlyn’s newfound readiness to connect, coupled with her genuine curiosity about others, opened doors to meaningful relationships and friendships. She discovered the power of communication and the art of listening. Kaitlyn returned from Hong Kong with a fresh perspective on leadership. With renewed determination, Kaitlyn decided to persevere in her role as a student councilor. She embraced the opportunity to lead with empathy, compassion, and understanding. Over time, her leadership skills flourished, and she ascended to the position of president of the student council. “I never expected to be the president, considering how quiet I used to be. However, I decided to take on this challenge.” Kaitlyn soon realized that her initial belief that leadership meant being authoritative and reprimanding her juniors was misguided. It was a pivotal moment when she watched the movie ‘Toy Story.’ The characters in the film, particularly Woody, taught her a profound lesson about leadership: true leadership is about being a friend, a patient listener, and a guide, rather than an enforcer of rules. “I saw that even my teachers had different teaching styles in the classroom, therefore I can try to have my own leadership style, and not base it on what I heard or read.” Kaitlyn’s impact extended beyond her role as a student councilor. She was an active member of the Young Artists Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) at Spectra, and one of her fondest memories was working on the mosaic mural that still adorns the School’s entrance. This artwork serves as a lasting testament to her creativity and dedication. Kaitlyn is currently pursuing a Diploma in Media Arts Design at Singapore Polytechnic after graduating as the valedictorian from the School of Design and Media at ITE College Central. Kaitlyn’s journey is a reminder that leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room but about using your voice to support and uplift others.

HONG WEI

Rebellious Student Made Good Aw Hong Wei Rebellious and uninterested in studies. This sums up Aw Hong Wei when he first started his journey in Spectra Secondary School. Hong Wei faced unique challenges that forced him to confront his fears and uncertainties, ultimately leading to a transformation that inspired everyone around him. A ROCKY START As a young and rebellious teenager, Hong Wei had little regard for punctuality and proper attire. He would stroll into school late, drawing the ire of teachers. He seemed to march to the beat of his own drum. It was clear that Hong Wei needed a wake-up call, and he recalls that it was his form teacher who gave him exactly what he needed. “My form teacher, Mr. Jason Liu, never tire of talking to me. He asked if there was anything he could do to make me come to school on time. He even roped in my friends to help out. My friends would call me in the morning to ask if I was going to school or if I was awake.” One of the unique aspects of Hong Wei’s journey was that as part of the second cohort of Spectra students, he and his peers had to navigate a system with only one other senior batch of students to approach for guidance. This forced Hong Wei to learn things on his own and discover his own path. “I faced fear and

uncertainty when I started in Spectra. There were not many peers whom I could turn to or confide in. I told myself that I needed to own my journey and that sparked a change in me.” Despite the initial challenges he faced, Hong Wei’s story is not one of despair, but rather one of resilience and transformation. Spectra’s interesting pedagogy and handson subjects turned Hong Wei around. “The innovative teaching techniques, such as using the escape room to teach Mathematics and explain concepts, helped me find a love for what I used to consider a difficult subject. The Vocational Education subjects also introduced me to the various courses which are useful for employment in future.” It was also his teachers and friends who played a pivotal role in helping him turn his life around. “Ms. Grace Ho Chen Yee and Mrs. Chew-Lew Wan Lai helped me with the Retail Services subject. Ms. Geeta Shorey, Ms. Junaidah Bte Haji Mohd Ishak and Mr. Zhang Jingda would not hear talk about quitting Normal (Academic) English and Science. Instead, they kept telling me to persevere. I might not be the model student, but somehow they saw potential in me, even when I couldn’t see it in myself.” They would constantly check in on him, offering guidance and encouragement along the way. 56

Hong Wei’s realization that only he could change himself was a crucial turning point. He started taking responsibility for his actions and decisions. He knew he needed to break free from his rebellious habits to make the most of his education. This newfound self-awareness marked the beginning of his transformation.

CHOOSING A DIFFERENT PATH One of the steps Hong Wei took towards independent selfimprovement was his decision to pursue a different Vocational Education subject from his friends. This choice required him to be in different classes, away from his comfort zone. However, he was determined to challenge himself and prove that he could excel academically. Despite the physical distance from his friends, the friendships Hong Wei had forged remained strong. “Even though we were in different classes as we did different subjects, we kept in touch, meeting up during recess and after school.” His friends continued to support and motivate him. They understood his need for change and respected his decision to chart his own course.

This unwavering support provided Hong Wei with the emotional strength to keep pushing forward. “Our friendship bond is still strong, even though we are now at different points in our lives. In fact, we recently met just to catch up.” With his determination, right attitude and mindset, Hong Wei graduated with a perfect Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 from ITE College Central in Nitec in Financial Services. He is currently in his final year in Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Diploma in Accountancy, aspiring to be an accountant or an entrepreneur. Hong Wei shows that transformation is possible when one is willing to take courageous steps toward change.

DERINDA

From Fearful To Fearless Derinda Lim Wei Ying Derinda Lim Wei Ying’s journey in Spectra Secondary School began with a familiar foe: the fear of making mistakes. As a cautious individual, she often found herself hesitating to take risks. However, her life changed when she encountered a group of teachers who offered her invaluable advice – that mistakes were not to be feared but embraced as opportunities for growth. Derinda decided to take this advice to heart, recalling what her form teacher in upper secondary used to say to them. “Ms. Tan Ling Ling Angeline was always giving advice to my class and I. She would keep reminding us to tuck in our shirts and be punctual. It might seem like she’s nagging at us, but with these reminders, my classmates and I became better people.” Derinda realized that her fear of making mistakes was holding her back from reaching her full potential. Armed with newfound determination, she resolved to use mistakes as stepping stones towards self-improvement. This shift in perspective marked the beginning of her remarkable transformation. BECOMING THE VOICE OF THE STUDENTS Derinda’s journey took a significant turn when she decided to run for the position of president of the student council. Doubting herself initially, she understood that she needed to overcome her fear of speaking up to effectively represent the student body. As the newly-elected president, she

embraced her role as the voice of the students and took it upon herself to advocate for their needs and concerns. “I had to put aside my self-doubt and be a role model for the students.” One of Derinda’s most impactful initiatives as president was her collaboration with the outgoing president to reach out to a Member of Parliament for the Admiralty division of Sembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC). The goal was to build a permanent sheltered paved footpath near Spectra, a project that would benefit not only the students but also the wider community. This endeavour was not without its challenges, as it took months of persistence and negotiation. “The process was long. We had to send follow-up emails and make phone calls. We are thankful our student council teacher, Ms. Ong Denise Germaine, provided guidance in this process.” Derinda’s determination and ability to adapt to the hurdles along the way proved invaluable. Through the footpath project, Derinda learned to view challenges differently. Instead of seeing them as obstacles, she saw them as opportunities to innovate, negotiate, and find creative solutions. This mindset shift enabled her to navigate the complexities of the project successfully and reinforced her leadership skills.

60

BEING AN ALL-ROUNDER Derinda was thankful for the opportunity given to her to attend the Our Singapore Leadership Programme in December 2022, where she had the chance to meet student leaders from 53 other schools in Singapore. This was where Derinda further honed her leadership skills, since everyone came from different backgrounds. “I learnt a lot from the other participants. I better understood the different perspectives others may have and that taught me the importance of respecting differing viewpoints. I also had a chance to deepen my understanding about the Singapore culture. Being part of the open conference with a Member of Parliament was the highlight of this programme.” Derinda exhibited outstanding performance not just in her leadership role, but also in academics. She committed herself to her studies, consistently striving for excellence. “I told myself that the subjects that I do in Spectra were different from the ones that I will do in ITE. I wanted to give my all and do my very best so that I would not look back with regret.” Her hard work and determination paid off when

she received straight A grades in her GCE N-Level Examination. These outstanding achievements were a testament to her relentless pursuit of knowledge and her commitment to excellence. Derinda’s dedication to serve and strive for academic excellence did not go unnoticed. She was recently honoured with the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Award for All-Round Excellence (Secondary), a testament to her remarkable journey from fear and self-doubt to confidence and success. Derinda is now pursuing Nitec in Business Services at ITE College Central. She is an inspiring example of a fearless leader who demonstrates that it is not the absence of mistakes but the willingness to learn from them and use them as a foundation for improvement that leads to remarkable success.
