Chairman’s Message
Hwa Chong International School (HCIS) enters its 18th year of providing quality international education with an emphasis on Asian values and culture. This year marks another year of great achievements and accomplishments against the backdrop of normalcy after the pandemic. Although HCIS is the youngest member in the established Hwa Chong family of schools, we have set ourselves as a highly regarded institution both locally and abroad, attracting students from all over the world. As the famous proverb goes, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’, our achievements would not have been possible without the steadfast support and nurturing hands of our village – a dedicated community of Board members, School Management Committee (SMC) members, staff, parents and volunteers. As we stand on the cusp of adulthood, we certainly cannot rest on our laurels. Continuously scaling new heights 自强不息 is part of our DNA. The Board of HCIS (BHCIS) and other stakeholders have continued to work on the foundations laid, to develop and upgrade the hardware and software systems in HCIS.
The extensive infrastructure upgrade underscores our commitment to provide a dynamic learning environment where students can actively pursue growth, academically, mentally, and physically. I am pleased to see the students actively using the newly completed sport facilities, such as the 6-lane 50m swimming pool, indoor gymnasium, and sports complex. This is a great step towards our goal to nurture all-rounded students.
With the soon-to-be completed two-storey library, and the Agora at the centre of the Annex Building, we are creating a symbol for a vibrant and bustling HCIS where social, cultural and intellectual
The village that has raised HCIS to where we are today is a result of the collective efforts put in by each and every member, past and present. Recently, HCIS English Faculty held the inaugural Law Conference and I was thrilled to see an exstudent returning as a speaker for the event. It is certainly a rewarding sight to see our Asian values of 饮水思源 , 己立立人,己达达人 brought to life; it is a testament to our success in instilling these values in our students. Not only did an ex-student take time out to give back to the community that has raised her, but also a parent who graced the event as the main guest-of-honour. We hope to continue this partnership with our alumni and other stakeholders, to grow HCIS as the partner for life with our students and parents.
HCIS has done exceptionally well with the clear visions laid down by the Board and SMC, and the well execution of plans by the school leaders and staff. I have full confidence that HCIS will continue to soar to greater heights because of the collaborative efforts put in by different nurturing and passionate stakeholders in the family. I would like to extend my gratitude to the Board members, SMC members, school leaders and staff who have encouraged and enabled our students to flourish and grow in such a supportive and innovative environment. I would also like to thank the parents who believe in the school to equip their child with both hardware and heartware to navigate the future ahead. Let us continue to work together for a better and brighter future.
“Cherish your vision and your dreams, as they are the children of your soul, the blueprints of your ultimate achievements.”
- Napoleon Hil
These words strongly resonate with me, and it brings to mind the vision of our predecessors when they established Hwa Chong International School (HCIS). They laid a strong foundation and provided the blueprint for us to pursue our goal of being a leading International Baccalaureate World School offering a uniquely global and Asian perspective. As we celebrate our 18th year, providing quality education for all, according to each individual, I would like to expound on the theme for 2023 yearbook – Cherish, and two main points that encapsulate the essence of a student’s journey here in HCIS.
than the combined HCI and HCIS Water Polo girls’ team that trained tirelessly together and went on to make the Hwa Chong family proud when they claimed the championship title at the National Water Polo school finals.
First, cherish all that you have learned and achieved. The knowledge you have acquired and the values you have developed are intangible things that shape your identity and will stay with you for life. I am exceptionally proud of our 2022 IB cohort for persevering through the pandemic and their achievements speak volumes. More than half of the cohort scored 40 points or above, and such stellar outcomes will open the doors of prestigious universities all over the world for them. The outstanding results cannot be obtained without the students’ tenacity and dedication, the guidance and support of the committed staff, and the parents’ confidence and belief in their child. Beyond the exceptional academic performance, our students are also shining brightly in the sports arena, winning gold and silver medals in Volleyball, Basketball and Badminton at the 2023 Athletic Conference of Singapore International School.
I cherish the support given to me by members of the School Management Committee, the Board of HCIS, as well as the school management and staff and I want to thank them for their steadfast efforts and drive to put our vision into action. Be it in education outreach and promotion of HCIS scholarship in other countries or organising the Chinese cultural workshops to encourage appreciation of Chinese culture and values, I have full confidence that every single initiative and every step we take collectively leads us closer to realising our vision and fulfilling our mission. To the graduating class of 2022, remember to cherish every moment, every lesson, and every person you encounter in your life as you embark on your next journey.
As we open another remarkable school year, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the exceptional achievements and unwavering spirit that have defined our school community. 2023 has been a testament to the resilience, dedication, and collective strength that we embody as an IB World School.
Our students have consistently demonstrated academic excellence, consistently exceeding expectations and setting new benchmarks for success. Their unwavering commitment to learning, their insatiable curiosity, and their eagerness to explore new horizons have been truly inspiring. We have witnessed countless examples of students going above and beyond, challenging themselves to reach their full potential, and demonstrating a remarkable growth mindset. The 2022 IB graduating class, who persevered throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, went on to deliver quality IB results with an impressive 68.7% of the cohort scoring 38 points or more. These excellent results will see our students progressing to prestigious and top-tiered universities around the world.
Beyond academic achievements, we have also witnessed the blossoming of character development among our students. They have embraced the IB mission statement, “To create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect,” demonstrating these qualities in their daily interactions and contributions to the school community. We have seen students supporting one another, fostering a culture of kindness, respect and inclusivity, and taking ownership of their actions and decisions.
Our students have also excelled in non-academic pursuits, showcasing their talents and passions
As we look towards the future, we are committed to preparing our students for a world increasingly shaped by technology and global interconnectedness. We hope to become a beacon of innovation and global citizenship, providing our students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in this rapidly evolving landscape. We will continue to integrate technology seamlessly into our curriculum and programmes, provide opportunities for hands-on learning, and encourage independent learning and for our students to explore and innovate in the digital realm. We will also persevere to foster a deep understanding of global cultures, promoting intercultural understanding and respect among our students.
HCIS has set new records and made outstanding progress in both academic and non-academic arenas and we can certainly look forward to the future with hope and optimism. We are proud of the many accomplishments of our students, faculty, and alumni, and we are grateful for the support and contributions of our community. It is the shared vision and collaborative efforts of all stakeholders that HCIS has continually been able to scale new heights. Such success for a young school would not have been possible without the unwavering support and trust of the Board, the School Management Committee, alumni, staff, parents and students. We will continue to strive for excellence 自强不息 , to embrace diversity, nurture international mindedness and serve with humility and compassion, and we look forward to continuing to grow and learn alongside one another in the years to come.

OUr trip to chiang mai was so fun, we were able to see elephants in the wild, trek the sticky waterfall, go to the night market and learn how to cook pad thai! But i think the best part was how much closer we got as a class and surprisingly making those mud bricks was more fun than we thought it'd be

"Due to the Internationalism Trip to the UK, I managed to visit the country I’ve always wanted to visit most while learning more about British literature, writing and poetry skills along with culture. I made a bunch of new friends during the trip and also learnt how to live with someone else in a hotel room. I also managed to do things that I’ve always wa nted to do such as watch a Shakespeare play and watch the Hamilton Musical. I managed to see a lot of pretty scenery, my favourite being the random countryside fields. Overall, it was a really fantastic experience that was both enlightening and enjoyable. I also got some tea from there." - Han Htoo Zaw, 3R

FAREWELL TO ALMA MATER
Valedictorian Speech
he theme of this year’s graduation ceremony: HOPE, symbolises our strong desire for positive change in the future and to stay resilient in the face of global challenges, especially the very recent Covid-19 pandemic. Bound by constraints beyond our control, we, the so-called “Gen-Zs”, have learned to rise above adversity using technology to create endless possibilities into the future.
Regardless, we must acknowledge that we couldn’t have come this far without the unwavering support of our dearest teachers who have taught us to be courageous, embrace our mistakes, have faith in ourselves and of the future plan we embark on.
Graduand’s Reflections
I discovered how to answer various types of questions, becoming like Chat GPT. Now, I’m excited to graduate and apply the skills I learnt to university.
School has been challenging at times, but it has also given me some truly unforgettable experiences and memories that I will always treasure.
My IB journey in HCIS has helped me to develop my capabilities and discover my higher educational aspirations.
My academic journey in HCIS has been fulfilling and I appreciate that I have learned to overcome difficulties and emerge a more capable learner.
The bonds and memories have shaped me into who I am today. I aspire to further my passion in engineering R&D to benefit society.
Thanks to all my teachers for always being patient and always being willing to address whatever gaps I had in my learning, no matter how small.
The incredible experiences I gained have developed me academically and socially. My gratitude to family, teachers, and friends for pushing me to be a better me.
When times get rough and vision clouded by despair, the support from everyone carried me forward. I hope to apply what I learned in a good college.
Through the struggles and challenges, I learn not to take anything for granted. The HCIS legacy I inherited will guide me well in my future.
Throughout the ups and downs, my family and friends have been by my side to support me. I cherish all the memories in my short time in HCIS.
As I embark on the next chapter of my life, I will carry with me the memories of the unwavering support from family, teachers, and friends.
JIN WEN BERNADETTE MARIE

we didn’t think we’d make it this far, but we did.
My parents’ unconditional support and my teachers’ close guidance have motivated me to believe in myself. With them behind me, I am encouraged to do even better.
The IB programme broadens my horizon and nurtures in me a sense of purpose for the future which I will embrace with determination and humility.
It is my privilege to know some amazing individuals in HCIS. I hope to find joy in my life and make a positive contribution to society. My journey in HCIS has been one of self-discovery, growth, and transformation. 这段艰苦但充实的 IB旅程,终究是“轻舟已过万重山”.
HCIS has provided me with the space to explore, develop and grow. The support from family and teachers has been integral in this journey.
The Yearbook and Publications Committee would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made the 2023 school yearbook a cherished reality.
