PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD

2022 started on a bright note with a refreshed commitment by staff to achieve our school goals through “student-centric approaches to nurture futureready learners grounded in sound values.” In tandem with the school theme, “Living Our School Values”, this has provided greater impetus for staff in guiding and supporting our students in their journey of selfdiscovery. Partnerships with parents remain critical to our endeavour in moulding our students’ character and developing their citizenship attributes positively.

While programmes and activities are planned way in advance with suffcient lead time for information dissemination and preparation, the school remains agile in responding to changes due to the prevailing pandemic. Whenever necessary, refnements are made to accommodate or weave in the new expectations.

Our staff have not only responded well to the changes, but they have also committed much effort and care in ensuring the growth and development of our students in a safe learning environment. Our staff remain steadfast in their duty, collaborating with one another and working as a team to enable the school to function optimally, and more importantly, make provisions to cater to the wellbeing of our students. Our students appreciate their teachers’ efforts, particularly the care and concern showered on them. This is refected in the fndings of our school survey and the national Quality of School Experience Survey. Teachers are deeply heartened by their students’ refections and messages of gratitude and greatly inspired to do their best to reach out and connect with every one of their students. The fruits of their labour are indeed sweet and satisfying.

While the school places strong emphasis on students’ academic

progression, we strive to provide our students with varied opportunities through a range of platforms to enable them to have interesting, meaningful and memorable school experiences. Through engaging class-based activities, students forge stronger ties with their fellow classmates and form teachers as they gain deeper insights and a better appreciation of one another on a more personal level.

In recognition of the students’ attainment and contributions to the school, fve new student awards have been introduced this year. The Sports Boy of the Year and Sports Girl of the Year are awarded in recognition of student athletes who uphold values and exemplify attributes of good sportsmanship in their respective sports CCA. The UG Exemplary Leadership Award is presented in recognition of students from the Uniformed Groups who have demonstrated excellent leadership, initiative and commitment to the development of their peers and CCA. The Outstanding Service Award is to appreciate students who have gone beyond the call of duty in demonstrating outstanding commitment and service to the school or their CCA. Additionally, in recognition of students who have demonstrated excellence and commitment to their craft in the Visual and Performing Arts, the Arts Excellence Award is bestowed.

We are truly grateful for an exciting year, the experiences of which we will treasure profoundly. Forging ahead, we are confdent that we will be ready for our future endeavours, knowing that we will be guided too by our values, which are like lighthouses, giving us direction, meaning and purpose.

May each of us lead a purposeful and meaningful life.

MATHEMATICS & COMMERCE DEPARTMENT

The Mathematics & Commerce Department believes strongly in building a solid foundation for our students in the learning of Mathematics and Principles of Accounts. Thus, the teachers in the department provide our students with authentic learning experiences through the use of various teaching and learning approaches including collaborative learning, self-directed learning and ICT-enriched learning experiences so that our students can be future ready, being equipped with 21st century competencies and digital literacies.

In turn, students will be able to communicate their ideas and thoughts using appropriate mathematical concepts to strengthen their mathematical processing skills, and become confdent problem-solvers with the ability to think critically.

In addition, the Mathematics Department offers the Retail Operations curriculum where the secondary three and four students in the Normal (Technical) course have the opportunity to learn how to promote a retail store’s products, manage its inventory

and serve customers. We include hands-on learning in which the students are exposed to the world of retailing through practical and theoretical lessons in a simulated retail setting. Self-directed learning is another characteristic of the syllabus in which students would need to independently research for their practical assessments and presentations. In a nutshell, the learning objectives of the subject encapsulate the basic retailing skills needed for students to better appreciate and understand the industry.

COMPUTING DEPARTMENT

The Computing Department aims to develop future-ready and responsible digital learners who are equipped with skills in using a variety of application softwares such as MS Word and PowerPoint to accomplish tasks and communicate ideas.

During Computer Applications (CPA) lessons, students also learn computation thinking and problem-solving skills, and to be self-directed in their learning through the use of instructional videos.

Through providing a platform for students to experience and express themselves through art in different forms, we hope to hone and develop skills which will enable them to observe and perceive the world with increased awareness and sensitivity!

Teachers employ a range of instructional strategies to meet the learning needs of the students. This includes the use of ICT tools such as Decktoys and Quizizz to scaffold and assess learning.

Our students also took part in the Animation and Game-Making 2021 Competition. Nur Atiqah Arfa Binte Mohammad Firdaus of 205B and Chang Chun Seng of 305A achieved the bronze and silver awards in the Animation categories.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

We ushered in the Year of the Tiger with celebrations in the classroom as well as a class potluck session! Our students, of all ethnicities and cultural affliations, were fully immersed in the celebrations as they feasted on Chinese New Year goodies and drinks.

The Mother Tongue Languages department organised the festivities and put together a virtual concert for students to enjoy in class. Ho Yue Ling (401) was the eloquent emcee who impressed everyone with her bilingual fuency. Lim Zhong Ping (301) performed two melodic solo pieces on the Guzheng while Nicole Sim (202) serenaded us with some catchy festive songs.

The highlight of the celebrations was the surprise visit by the God of Fortune to every class, as all students, teachers and staff were presented with goodies as a symbolic wish for a prosperous and sweet new year. Everyone was pleasantly surprised to realise that the God of Fortune was none other than our Vice-Principal, Mr Sivakumar. The fantastic celebrations brought much joy to the staff and students as they cheered for a happy and healthy Year of the Tiger.

Lastly, Elise Seah (403) and Belle (404) brought festive cheer with their graceful and energising dance performance.
44

TOTAL DEFENCE DAY

We commemorated Total Defence Day with class-based activities to learn about Singapore’s six pillars of Total Defence. The Peer Support Leaders conducted our annual TDD Quiz via Kahoot and we then embarked on different commemorative activities to reinforce the learning about military, economic, civil, psychological, social and digital defence.

45

STUDENT LEADERS’ INVESTITURE

The 5th Student Leaders’ Investiture was held over two mornings, on 18 and 19 April this year. On 18 April 2022, the Student Councillors were invested during the morning assembly in the hall. Our Principal, Ms Chan, presented the Student Councillors with collar pins and certifcates of appointment. It was the frst time after two years (due to the Covid-19 pandemic) that an in-person investiture was conducted. The Peer Support Leaders (PSLs) were also formally recognised during the session as well. The PSLs were presented with collar pins by their Form Teachers (FTs) during the morning FT time on 19 April. This investiture served as a signifcant milestone occasion for the Student Leaders in Damai Secondary School as they grow in their journey to Aspire, Explore, Achieve!

46

“I felt heartened and hopeful to see my students’ appreciation, through their thank-you speeches and gratitude notes to the teachers. It has not been easy for them to overcome the diffculties that they faced but you can see that they strived and picked themselves up along the way with the support of their teachers. ”

GRADUATION DAY

“Even though the students were initially disappointed in not being able to have graduation celebrations together as a cohort, it was heartening to see how each class got into the spirit and made the celebrations special in their own unique ways”

“Congratulations 405A! We are proud of your achievements, but even more proud of the person you’ve become. Take pride in how far you’ve come. Have faith in how far you can go.”

On 30 September 2022 and 7 October 2022, we bid adieu to our graduating Secondary 4 and 5 students. The intimate and heartwarming Graduation Day marked the culmination of our graduating students’ years of hard work and memorable time spent at Damai Secondary. The students ended their last day at Damai Secondary with class-based celebrations, commemorating their successes and achievements during their graduating year, video highlights of their time together as a class and showing appreciation and receiving encouragement from their classmates and teachers. The Peer Support Leaders rose to the occasion marvellously to lead and deliver their appreciation speech towards the teachers with admirable confdence. The students then tucked into a sumptuous lunch as they laughed, joked, and snapped numerous photo memories for a

“Initially, I thought graduating would be nerve wrecking but when it came to the actual graduation day, it turned out to be remarkable. Graduating with the people I care for and those who have been with me since Day 1 was very special. I’m glad to say I graduated with no regrets and only happy memories of my time in Damai Secondary.”

“Graduation Day was enjoyable, and I loved the makan treat and special certifcates our teachers gave us, affrming our talents. However, I feel sad as it would be the last time that we get to be in the same class together, before going our different ways.”

lifetime. With lots of laughter and some tears, students wrapped up the event by writing well wishes and parting words on one another’s T shirt, signifying the indelible marks they have left on each other’s secondary school life.

Experiencing the pandemic for most of their secondary school years had undoubtedly brought many disruptions to their lives. Despite these challenges, our graduands exhibited resilience, tenacity, and adaptability. We are proud of how you have grown in your four years at Damai and it is our dearest hope that you will never lose your zest for life. As you move on to your next milestones in life, we wish you the very best and always reach for your dreams!

MESSAGE FROM YEAR HEAD, LOWER SECONDARY

Success comes to those who embrace challenges, persist in obstacles, see effort as necessary, learn from criticisms and are inspired by the successes of others. Despite all the uncertainties during the year, I am proud that all of you have made the effort to adopt a growth mindset and support one another in your growth and development towards becoming your best selves. Continue to make each day count with the help of friends and teachers, do the right thing and remain steadfast in achieving the goals you have set for yourselves.

MESSAGE FROM YEAR HEAD, UPPER SECONDARY

The past two years have been a challenging and uncertain time for many, but as we gradually return to normalcy, let us contemplate what is worth living or returning to. Always be grateful to those who have helped you in times of need and never take for granted the lessons learnt or mistakes made. Keep yourselves grounded in sound moral values and steadfast beliefs for these will become your mantra and source of inspiration whenever you feel lost. In the pursuit of your goals and ambitions, do not lose sight of the intangibles that are important as well – relationships with your family, your peers and those who care for you.

In Damai, we often speak of building your resilience and my hope is for Damaians to be able to rise above the odds, fnd your own meaning and purpose and simply, be happy.

In the words of journalist, Amanda Ripley, “Resilience is a precious skill. People who have it have 3 advantages: a belief they can infuence life events, a tendency to fnd meaning and purpose in life’s turmoil, and a conviction they can learn from positive and negative experiences.”
