MY OUMA IS ‘N LARRIE DIE FRANSE KONING EN SY PRINSES KOKKEDOORTJIE

letter

FROM THE EDITOR

It seems that Larries tend to flourish in any season. Not even the winter cold can dampen their spirit. The netball, hockey, squash, cross country and extra mural sport girls had an excellent term. The One Act Plays brought a lot of excitement to the school. Let’s rather not mention the exams, but all in all, it was a good term.

Do you want to hear a confession? There isn’t a single bone in my body that enjoys winter, even though I am a very proud Larrie. Those of you who know me better, would know that I am a bit of a fitness freak. I love running. Basking in the sunlight during a run to wherever, is my absolute favourite thing to do. Winter means less running and more runny noses – eek! Oh, and to the person who invented stockings, I hope you step on a piece of Lego. But, since winter is inevitable, I thought of a few pastimes to keep you occupied and to avoid winter’s awful sting. So, go spoil yourself to a pair of fuzzy slippers and get ready for (very little) action. Reading whilst wrapped in seven blankets could be a good survival technique this winter. Movie marathons are great too! Ask your granny to teach you how to knit or sew and you might end up with a brand new wardrobe at the end of winter – or a very odd looking knitted scarf, in my experience. Since winter gives us all the munchies, start your own vegetable garden. Then you can gobble on, guilt-free. Try a few new recipes or bake – winter is the ideal time to do this, since you can hide the few extra kilos under all the layers of clothing.

2 | SECTION

The more philosophical part of me would advise you to rediscover yourself this winter. Life is so busy that we only focus on getting through one day at a time. Our schoolwork and sport gobble up our time and we forget about ourselves in the process. Have some me-time this winter. Paint or draw or write a poem. Being creative is an excellent way to reconnect with yourself. Sorry girls, in this drought, bubble baths are out of the question, but a quick shower could be just as effective to calm your mind and to order your thoughts. A few of you might share my dislike for winter. You might feel that this term handed you a cactus (which is ten times worse than being handed lemons in my makeshift philosophical world), but that doesnt mean that you have to sit on this cactus and cause yourself

more agony. Display your cactus in your newly established garden and be proud of your achievements this term. Then go grab yourself a cup of tea and cheers to a new term and new goals.

Indien jy hierdie artikel nou lees, gaan jy tien-teen-een jouself op een of ander stadium in ‘n situasie bevind waar jy pleks van “my vriendin” byna “my mentor” gaan sê.

4 | SECTION CULTURE

“Be proud of yourself.Try to eat well... and when you cheat, enjoy it!” ek praat nie en dus sal sy my nie kan help nie. Daarom sal ek veel eerder my tegnikus-vriendin, wie my wel sal kan help, vra. As jy vanuit iemand anders se perspektief kyk, dien jy moontlik as ‘n mentor vir iemand anders .

Hiermee los ek jou met stof tot nadenke, soos my eie mentor, my ouma, sal sê.

THE

GREEN

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE GREEN COMMITTEE? The goal of the committee is to attract as many people as we possibly can to make a difference and to show them how they can impact the environment as well as their community. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE STICKER INITIATIVE?

COMMITTEE

Mrs. Vermeulen came up with the brilliant idea of the sticker initiative during one of our meetings. She asked our opinion and we loved it! WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING ON DOING WITH THE MONEY THAT YOU COLLECT FROM THE STICKERS YOU SELL? We are hoping to use the money to buy more stickers and contribute to any charity that we can help. We would also use the money to support any of the green committee’s projects. WHAT AFFECT HAVE YOU NOTICED HAS THE WHOLE INITIATIVE HAD ON THE SCHOOL AND HOW PEOPLE ARE LIVING? Our committee can definitely see a huge difference in our school, we really appreciate all the support from everyone who bought stickers from us and who are reading the information on the notice board and following our recommendations. We can definitely see that everyone is trying their best to not use palm oil even when their favourite product has palm oil in it. We have spoken to a few girls and they have really gone out of their way to make a difference.

There are times you have to lose something priceless. That is how you go to the next level. -Joel Osteen 2. Tears of joy ensued...” 3.

Hoe is Meneer se nagte? Saans slaap sy so ses ure.” 6. Haar velletjie is so sag soos sy. Haar bruin beertjie laat haar elke keer glimlag. Sy hou niks van bad of klere oor haar kop of arms nie. Tussen 19:00 en 20:00 saans is dit ‘n saak van gebed.”

lees...” 10. Dink Meneer dat pa-wees by Meneer pas? Geniet Meneer dit? “Beslis. Wanneer is haar verjaarsdag? (Die franse leerders wil weet.) “Haar spesiale dag is 21 Maart, op Menseregtedag. Dis baie gepas.” 12. Gaan Meneer ook by haar ‘n fantastiese mode bewustheid kweek? “Ek gaan my heel beste probeer!” 14. Kry Meneer darem ruskansies deur die dag?

8. Hoe lyk haar kamer?

“Baie minder as wat ek gedink het. Die Engelse sêding lees, “to sleep like a baby,” maar in werklikheid slaap baba’s baie sleg! So dis ‘n paradoks.

The wedding everyone has been talking about! ....not the royal one

As everyone knows, Miss Niemand recently became Mrs. Geldenhuys. Everyone has been buzzing with questions about the big day, and I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Mrs. Geldenhuys. So, I am here to inform you about all the things we have been wondering about - from her dress (Megan Markle had nothing on ma’am in my opinion) and other things like emotions of the day, attendance etc! 1. What inspired your hair and dress for the day? “I didn’t have any idea or image in my head of what I wanted the dress to look like, but I knew I wanted it to be me. One day I saw this lace and I fell in love with it immediately, I knew I had to have it in my dress. And with my hair, again, I wanted it to be me, and very natural.”

4. How did you feel walking down the aisle? “Excited and nervous, it’s a big day, so obviously there were some nerves, but mostly just excitement.” 5. Does being married feel different to being engaged?

“..it’s like we are our own little family now.”

“For sure, we didn’t live together so that has already been something big and new for us, but different in a good way. It’s like we are our own little family now.” Thank you to Mrs. Geldenhuys for sitting with me for this interview. I hope everyone’s questions about the big day have now been answered!

2. Was your husband very involved with the planning of the wedding? “No no no, I let him sit on the sidelines and I basically took over. It depends on the man, but I decided to take the reins on this!” 3. Was it a big wedding or a smaller, intimate wedding? “Initially it was meant to be a smaller wedding, but we both have quite big families so it ended up being quite a big wedding instead!”

All Girls ons verwelkom jou in Paarl.

My ouma is ‘n

Larrie....

Dissipline was toe al iets waarin La Rochelle eerste kom. In my ouma se woorde: “Dit was bitter cool om ’n Larrie te wees al is dit so ‘n koekige gedoente. “

Kom Ons Bak!

The FLAMINGO Project spreads its wings in La Rochelle. Flamingos symbolise femininity, innocence and confidence. These areall the characteristics the “Flamingo Project” wants to improve amongst underprivileged woman with breast cancer. After seeing women in the public sector waiting months for their breast cancer surgeries, the Flamingo Project was launched by Dr. Liana Roodt in 2010. She noticed that these women also had no emotional support. It was time for her to spread her feathers of hope. She invented the concept of “catch up” surgeries. These are free surgeries which are given to underprivileged women who cannot afford private hospitals and who are 12 weeks away from getting their surgery. The profound “catch up“ surgeries have reduced the waiting time substantially, to 2-3 weeks, which shortens the waiting list. The doctors give their services for free, but it costs R 4000 per operation. This is only possible by the donations of kind-hearted civilians. The facilitators of the project go the extra mile each woman is sent home with an extra “feather of hope” pamper pack. These include water, rollon, tissues, lip-ice, hand cream, an energy bar and a washcloth. The pamper pack is put together by donations from schools, businesses and individuals. We are proud to say that the La Rochelle Interact gave the Larries an opportunity to spread more feathers of hope through the community, by collecting goods for these ladies. Let us live according to Mother Theresa’s motto: “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love”.

Self-

Self-image is the personal view we have of ourselves. It is our mental image or self-portrait. Self-image is an internal dictionary that describes the characteristics of the self, containing words such as intelligent, beautiful, ugly, talented, selfish and kind. These characteristics form a collective representation of our assets and liabilities as we see them. They become the collection of beliefs or feelings we have about ourselves, our "self-perceptions." How we define ourselves influences our motivations, attitudes, and behaviors and it affects our emotional adjustment.

The difference between low self-esteem and poor self-image is this: self-esteem is based on subjective feelings that change according to the current environment; self-image is one's view of self, and beliefs about oneself, based on life experiences. The two can go hand-in-hand, but low self-esteem is a problem that is more easily and naturally fixed. Patterns of self-esteem start very early in life. For example, a young child who reaches a milestone experienes a sense of accomplishment that boosts self-esteem. The concept of success following persistence starts early. As little kids try, fail, try again, fail again, and then finally succeed, they develop ideas about their own capabilities. At the same time, they're creating a self-concept based on interactions with other

people. Self-esteem can also be defined as feelings of capability combined with feelings of being loved. A person who is happy with an achievement but does not feel loved may eventually experience low self-esteem. Likewise, a person who feels loved but is hesitant about his or her own abilities can also end up with low self-esteem. Healthy self-esteem comes when the right balance is reached.

experiences with others such as teachers, friends and family add to the image in the mirror. Relationships reinforce what we think and feel about ourselves. The image we see in the mirror may be a real or distorted view of who we really are. Based on this view, we develop either a positive or a negative self-image. The strengths and weaknesses we learn as children are internalized and affect how we act as adults today.

According to psychologist Prof Carl Rogers, everyone strives to become more like an “ideal

We continually take in information and evaluate ourselves. How do I look? We have a mental image of our physical appearance. How am I doing? We have a performance image of our successes and failures. How important am I? We have an inner sense of our adequacy and value. With a positive self-image, we own our assets and potentials while being realistic about our liabilities and limitations. A negative self-image focuses on our faults and weaknesses, distorting failure and imperfections.

SELF-IMAGE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE HOW WE THINK ABOUT OURSELVES DIRECTLY AFFECTS HOW WE FEEL ABOUT OURSELVES AND HOW WE RESPOND TO LIFE.

self.” The closer one is to their ideal self, the happier one will be. Rogers also claimed that one factor in a person’s happiness is unconditional positive regard, or UPR, from others. UPR often occurs in close or familial relationships, and involves a consistent level of affection regardless of the recipient’s actions. Self-image is also a product of learning. Parents or caregivers make the greatest contribution to our self-image. They are mirrors reflecting an image of ourselves. Our

Self-image is important because how we think about ourselves directly affects how we feel about ourselves and how we respond to life. Self-image can determine the quality of our relationships with others. How we think and feel about ourselves influences the way we react or respond to life stressors. A positive self-image affects our physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual well being.

positive. 3) SOCIAL ROLES.

1) THE REACTION OF OTHERS.

Some social roles carry prestige e.g. doctor, airline pilot, TV-presenter, premiership footballer. Such social roles promote self-esteem. Other roles carry stigma. E.g. being a prisoner, mental hospital patient, a refuse collector or an unemployed person.

If people admire us, flatter us, seek out our company, listen attentively and agree with us we tend to develop a positive self-image. If they avoid us, neglect us, tell us things about ourselves that we don’t want to hear we develop a negative self-image. 2) COMPARISON WITH OTHERS. If the people we compare ourselves to (our reference group) appear to be more successful, happier, richer, and better looking than ourselves, we tend to develop a negative self image. If they are less successful than us our image will be

4) IDENTIFICATION. Roles aren’t just “out there.” They also become part of our personality i.e. we identify with the positions we occupy, the roles we play and the groups we belong to. HOW CAN WE CREATE A POSITIVE SELF-IMAGE?

Mia Oberholser

Self-image is not permanently fixed. Part of our self-image is dynamic and changing. We can learn to develop a healthier and more accurate view of ourselves, thus changing the distortions in the mirror. Self-image change is a process occurring over a lifetime. A healthy self-image starts with learning to accept and love ourselves. It also means being accepted and loved by others. SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS- as habitual self-awareness? Obsession with self-image leads to a life of constant comparison. As mentioned before, there will always be someone richer, thinner, more intelligent, more spiritual, etc. A life of constant comparison is a competition we can never win over the long run. Autumn Trends Autumn weather can be pretty confusing. Here are a few fashion trends to follow in order to stay cool, but look hot while doing it. The first thing to invest in this autumn is definitely a pair of chunky shoes. Whether they are just plain white or full of colour, don’t be afraid of these thick souled sneakers. Embrace the boldness of the shoes and swop it out with those boots you wear every year and try something new.

If there is one item of clothing you need this autumn it is a turtleneck. Not only does it keep your whole body warm but it can be the starting point of many great outfits. A turtleneck is perfect for this weather and comes with very little effort, all you need to do is pair it with a cute pair of pants or under any jacket and you are ready to go. If you are wondering what colour to get, black is an easy start to your collection.

For those slightly brighter autumn days, a pair of “tiny” glasses is the perfect accessory. Whether it be a pair of rectangular or thin cat eyed frames the smaller the better and it can be the perfect accessory to add to your outfit to make it complete.

HELP! I’M A TEENAGER! It’s no lie that most high school students are always busy. We are expected to juggle sport, culture, academics and not kill everyone around us. It’s as if time is our enemy. Yes, in some cases this sucks. Is it even worth it? Looking at the bigger picture our dedication and determination to succeed builds character and skills for the future, so the ultimate answer is: YES, it is worth it. Even in our hustle to the top we need to pace ouselves and we can start by doing the following:

1. Get a calendar. Write down everything you need to do as soon as it leaves your teacher/ coaches mouth. This way if anything clashes, the choice as to which you will do is easier. It will also help you to avoid clashes in your schedule. These organizational skills will stay with you even after school and will help you in the work place. 2. Sleep. This is so important. Our bodies cannot function on coffee and those cheap energy drinks at the Market. What our bodies need is to rest and re-energize itself naturally. With sleep. By eating healthy your skin stays clear and happy, you won’t get fat, resulting in mental and physical happiness and an over-all better attitude towards life. So, long story short, try to be asleep by 10 pm. 3. Set termly goals. By doing this you can focus on the things you want in that term. This is conve-

nient because then you can be diligent and precise in what you do, and you have clear guidelines of where you want to go. This way when things that are not planned pop-up you can either agree or decline it guilt free.

tact can help you avoid a burnout.

4. Make time for yourself. Yes, it is instinctive for those who crave success to grind non-stop, but somewhere along the line if you keep hustling without breathing you are bound to get burnedout. Me-time not only refreshes the mind - much like sleep - but also helps you to gain perspective you wouldn’t otherwise have , knee-deep in school life. Also, you can’t be on your A-game if you are neurotic. A great way to spend me-time and avoid burn-outs is through quiet time with God, as this will make you feel motivated, inspired and will ensure that everything will work out as it should in the long run. Keeping your faith in-

5. And then probably the most important, Trust the Lord. Sometimes things don’t go as planned and it can get so bad we feel we should just close the door on it, but by trusting the Lord we accept that it happened for a specific reason and can make peace and can then keep on moving forward. Nothing is ever a loss in life if it was planned by God. Yes, the future is scary and sometimes we ask, “Can I cope?” Yes you can, and yes you will. Just pace yourself. Normally I’d say take a long bath, but that’s not possible with water restrictions and all. Finally, trust the Lord.

‘Isaiah 40:31 But those who trust in the Lord will renew in strength, they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not faint.’

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established...We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps. PROVERBS 16:3, 9. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. JEREMIAH 29:11

Musiekverslaaf? Hoe vreemd?

vry-

So die vraag is nou, is jy verslaaf daaraan?

2. Wanneer julle gesin julle roadtrip beplan, maak ‘n playlist wat almal se musieksmaak insluit, so kan musiek julle band versterk i.p.v vernietig.

5. Don’t judge a person by their CD covers.

The woman, the myth, the legend. Interview with Sigrid Burger: 1.How did La Rochelle prepare you to play netball professionally? “La Rochelle definitely prepared me to play for South-Africa, with the help of Tannie Alby Engelbrecht, being without a doubt the best schools’ netball coach in the country. She was the one who formed me and gave me opportunities, I played one match at the end of my grade 8 year, and then from grade 9 onwards I played for the first team. With her coaching and La Rochelle not being so strong in their netball at the time, every single time I got the ball, it just had to count. For almost my whole

high school life having to make sure every opportunity counts, prepared me, because that is all an international game is about.”

5.What was your favourite part of the Commonwealth games? “Something that stood out was how well it was organized. The food court was by far the most memorable and my favourite thing. It was open 24/7 and there were all kinds of different foods. The Australian rugby team also gives the South-African team a run for their money. They are extremely attractive.”

2.In a previous article in 2015 you said that your goal is to one day play for the South-African team, now that you have achieved it, how does it feel and what is your next goal? “I debuted in 2016 against Wales and it was an amazing opportunity, so humbling, because years and years of practise were finally rewarded. God blessed me with the talent and just being able to glorify His name is very cool. My next goal would definitely be to make the South-African netball world cup team of 2019 in Liverpool and to play super league in either Australia or New Zealand.”

6.Do you have any advice for young girls who wants to chase their dreams but are unsure of themselves and their abilities? “Never give up and use that thing that you have either been bullied or joked about to your advantage. The thing that makes you unique is the thing that is going to get you to the top, because no one else has it. The Australian startingline shooter has an arm span of about 3 and a half meters and uses that to her advantage. It is awkward, but that awkwardness made her extremely good in what she does. Work hard, work hard. I first made the Western Province 0/17 team and it only got better from there. Any negativity around you, use it and turn it into positivity.”

3.What was the thing that stood out for you the most in the last 3 years of University? “The most memorable thing about University was definitely being in Hostel, finding “sisters” and attending dances where you could dress up. Sportwise, winning the varsity cup really stands out in my first year.” 4.You were the tallest player in school, how does that compare to playing in the SA team and competing internationally? “(laughs) I am average height when playing internationally. There are so many keepers, HV’s and shooters that are a head taller than me. I am 6 foot 2, and at the common games there where people who were like 6,6 and 6,7. I am the most average person alive in netball.”

Summer bodies are made in Winter Hierdie stelling is alombekend. (Must be nice though.)
