Brief van die redaktrise
Deur Inge van der Westhuizen
Hoër Meisieskool La Rochelle vier hierdie jaar haar 162ste verjaarsdag.

Jy is gewaarsku!
As jy wil oorleef, moet jy eerder seker maak dat jou kas altyd netjies is.

THE PROBLEMS THAT COME WITH HAIR HAVING SOUL Written by Jessica Eckhardt You haunt every Clicks for sulphate-free conditioners; you spend hours on the web on how to ‘finger-coil’ correctly; hair routines and wash-day schedules are perfectly strategised. All to get a ‘How do you get it like that?’ or ‘Have you tried brushing it all out?’ and a personal favourite, ‘May I touch it?’ It is even more comical when people do not ask at all and just go for it! Oh, the woes that come with being a curly-headed girl! It would not be fair to speak on behalf of the entire natural hair community, so instead, the focus of this article will be sharing a personal understanding and experience of living with curly hair. It is no secret that embracing natural, ethnic hair has become popularised. There has been a positive mental shift within women specifically to embrace the hair with which they were born. Suddenly people feel more empowered to stride down the street with their afros, or going to brunch in Bantu knots. While it is a muchneeded, and long overdue change, one cannot help but wonder what aided the shift in the mentality that hair did not have to meet the Eurocentric beauty standards to be considered beautiful as well.
It seems the answer to this question is divided. Some support the idea that society has learned to start embracing physical differences; that women empowerment could be strengthened and practised by accepting ALL women, especially in a society where men still hold a major influence on the way women view and validate themselves. The other half, supports the concept which stems from a shift in trends on social media. Which is viewed as the new ‘look’, the new ‘in thing’, the next style to chase, the new ‘statement’. The authenticity of curls, reduced merely to a social trend. How unexciting and trivialising! Although many agree that acceptance of one’s natural features should be supported without doubt, it is equally important as to know why. Should you love your own hair because you believe it is unique and it is one of the many properties that enhance your physical beauty? Or, should you love your own hair because Kim Kardashian said beach waves are underrated and that was what she would be wearing to the Met Gala this year?
Page 9
Romanticising natural and curly hair in particular, is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because of the courage and desire it has provoked in curlyheaded women to accept their hair for what it is and finding the beauty within their natural roots; while encouraging others to do the same. A curse, however, when it portrays curls as beautiful when owned by society’s version of a beautiful woman – and in the process, another beauty standard is established for people with curly hair to achieve in order to feel physically attractive in their own skin. ‘They’re all so gorgeous.’ The problem is that beauty is subjective, so people who do not meet society’s version of beauty, are made to feel as if their hair is not as beautiful as someone else’s. They are then excluded from this ‘acceptance community’, for which people with ethic hair spent so long fighting.
My hair has soul too. So, a word or two of advice when it comes to conversing with a curly-headed pal of yours? What to include in discourse? If you think my hair is beautiful, tell me. Do not touch it as if it is some science experiment up for evaluation. Do not stare at it in awe, implying that it is peculiar or strange. Do not tell me you wish you had ‘my type of hair’. Do not pity me, or the hairballs, or the frizz, or the coarseness and natural dehydration that many type 3As and above experience daily. No compensation is necessary. Simple acceptance will suffice. It is finding the beauty in our dissimilarities and appreciating them since hair has soul too.
t is a contradiction in all its glory, as this message portrays everything that natural hair communities and platforms go against, namely the idea that hair has value because of the face and body to which it belongs. Hair is beautiful because it is different in strand size, length, texture, colour and origin. It is our uprising, our heritage, our ancestors and our means of individuality and self-expression. It is, therefore, not so much the body that matters, but the soul. That, fellow readers, is why it can be off-putting when people refer to my mane as though it were an object to be observed in a laboratory, instead of the artwork that it is; why curious stares from strangers in public, or when people refer to my natural hair as ‘wild’, ‘unruly’, ‘untidy’, ‘crazy’, even ‘unprofessional’, are offensive. Why it hurts when people suggest that one might look better with straightened hair. Or that they think curly hair would be ‘too much’ for them to ‘handle’. Yes, it is a lot of maintenance, but it is maintenance I choose to put up with.

JUST BREATHE Written by Mila Malherbe We have all been told to calm down and just to breathe. But it is not always that easy. We live in an age where the average teenager has the same anxiety level as an asylum patient in the 1950s. The problem is that many people do not recognise mental disorders as the diseases they are. Even though they do not always show physical symptoms and scars, they are real.
The stigma created by society around mental illnesses makes it hard for people to notice the problem. Sentences such as ‘It’s all in your mind’, or ‘There are people who have it far worse’ do more harm than good. They make one feel guilty about having these problems and detract from the reality. These kinds of opinions invalidate the seriousness of mental health. The truth remains that these problems exist in our everyday lives. Suppressing them will only make them reach boiling point. But if the problems are recognised, the necessary help that is needed and deserved can be sought. Mental illness might be something with which we live, but it does not have to run our lives.
According to the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, one in seven teenagers struggle with mental disorders. Still, this goes unnoticed. The thing with mental disorders is that they are not always obvious. Some days teenagers can cope with the symptoms easily, while at other times it is difficult to get out of bed. And on the bad days, everything can become too much. Every noise is too loud, and lights are too brighter – the basic daily tasks can become overwhelming. What often makes it worse, is the fact that people in teenagers’ lives do not always understand that it is not a choice. It is not something that will simply go away with time, but instead it is something that one has to learn how to deal with it. Scientifically, mental disorders are a chemical imbalance in the brain. It perceives and functions differently from others. It is not a mindset or a change you make at will.

Our brains were not designed to handle this, so when we find time to rest, we need to be sure that we are making maximum use of it.
07.
You might think that spending time on your cell phone, watching TikTok, or scrolling through Instagram is a proper way of resting, but you are just fooling yourself. We feel more fatigued after 10 minutes on TikTok, than we do after writing a 2-hour Physics paper! We are not resting properly. We go from one stimulus to the next, never giving our brains time to recuperate. So, that begs the question: How should you rest properly?

Take a step away from everything and close your eyes.

one of the easiest ways to recharge, but when our phones are in the way, we struggle to be fully present in the moment and forget to put all of our focus on the person in front of us. Learn to say ‘no’. You do not have to go to every event. It is important to be able to spend time with yourself and recharge in your own presence.
Resting takes on many different forms for everybody. The one thing that should stay the same for everybody, however, is that we should not feel guilty about resting or needing a break. Feeling guilty and thinking about all your work the entire time you are “resting”, defeats the purpose of resting. Your mind and body need a break and it is often imperative to do so. So, sometimes taking a break could prove to be the most productive thing you could do.

TO LEAVE OR NOT TO LEAVE: ASSISTING YOUNG BIRDS Written by Isabella Colatruglio Most humans are compassionate creatures with hearts that melt at the sight of animals in need. Our instinct might be to help these animals, but sometimes, it is our kindness that causes these animals to perish. The sight of a helpless fledgling* is often too much for our hearts to bear. While the idea of raising this bird might seem appealing, it is seldom the right decision. Fledglings leave the nest before they can fly, which is why you may witness them flapping about on the ground. However, fear not, the parents are near and have not abandoned this young bird. Careful observation will reveal the parents frequently feeding the fledgling, as well as keeping a watchful eye. Within a couple days it will have full use of its wings. Unwillingly, many people become involved in ‘kidnapping’ these young birds. They innocently pluck them from their home in an effort to save them … only this often debilitates the bird for life and can even result in its death. Before picking up a bird, carefully observe the surroundings. Are there adult birds around? Is the bird flapping its wings or running about enthusiastically?
If the answer is ‘yes’ to any of these, let it be! If you do feel concerned, an easy way to check if the bird is still being cared for is to gently feel the bird’s crop. The crop is a sack-like fixture located on the bird’s chest. If there is any content in the crop, the bird is still in the care of its parents and should be returned to where it was found. If it is empty, place the bird back, but observe to see if the parents do return and then act accordingly. Yes, feeling the crop means holding the bird, which many think will result in the parents abandoning it. Firstly, birds have a limited sense of smell and secondly, it is HIGHLY unlikely to result in the parents abandoning their offspring.
*A young bird that has left the nest
Page 14
Remember, when you catch the bird, do so as quickly as possible to prevent it from becoming stressed. Stress is deadly for many animals, especially those that are not used to human contact. To limit contact with the bird, use a towel where possible. This is NOT a time to take selfies! If the bird is not being cared for, take it to your nearest vet. Many of these birds may be unnoticeably injured or sick and require veterinary care. Alternatively, you can contact bird or wildlife rehabilitation centres in your area. These people will be able to acquire the necessary care for the bird. Raising a fledgling is far more challenging than people realise. Yeast infections like sour crop can affect the bird if they are not being fed the correct food at the correct temperature. This can be deadly if a vet does not intervene. Even if you do succeed in rearing the bird, it may still struggle to survive without the necessary skills. So, if you see a bird struggling, and kindness takes over, remember to work in the bird’s best interests and try your best just to let it be!

Matric Vacation: Where to go? Where not to go? By Daniell Lemmer
It is normal, as a matriculant, that you would want to celebrate the completion of twelve years of school. In fact, it is quite natural to want to mark the end of your school career. The question arises, how best to do so?
#NetMatrieks-bootreis is an amazing, unforgettable cruise experience. It takes place from 5 – 9 December 2022 on the MSC Orchestra ocean liner. The ship has numerous pools, dance floors and performances. You get to meet other Matric learners from all around the country. Soekie Buitendach Dierks refers to the cruise as, “Fun fun fun. It is a must.” Cornelle Lombaard says, “It was an amazing experience. Had a lot of fun and laughs.” However, you do not have to attend any of the abovementioned events. Other options include a road trip with friends, going overseas, or staying at home. Do what suits and pleases you. One thing, however, is certain: Make the most of this last opportunity before you venture out into the ‘big world’!
There are numerous options available, such as the Plett Rage, Matriekbaai or the #NetMatrieks-bootreis. Matriekbaai'22 @Diaz Hotel & Resort in MOSSEL Bay is a new addition to choose from. It is scheduled for 2 – 8 December 2022. There will be live performances, daily activities and access to the Waterpark. Accommodation is available at the Diaz Hotel and Resort and tickets for the first phase will be available at R999. Obviously no reviews or comments are on hand, but with performances by, amongst others, Spoegwolf, Biggy, the SaxbyTwins, this is not an event to be missed.
/
The Plett Rage Festival has been taking place for over twenty years and it is the biggest end-year Matric event. Armand Vermeulen refers to the Festival as a “Safe and fun environment for all matrics to come celebrate”, while Jean Steenkamp describes it as “The best time they’ve ever had.” The Plett Rage website includes an all-explanatory document for parents to ensure they know their children are safe and cared for. This Festival is also scheduled for 2– 8 December 2022. If you love the Festival vibe, the Plett Rage is for you!

Vyf leerders sit detensie. Net vier loop weg.

Mrs Oosthuizen
She recommends The Choice by Edith Eger. This novel deals with the impact of the second World War. It tells the tale of a woman who survived Auschwitz. When she initially arrives at the concentration camp, she has to make impossible, life-altering decisions. After her experience in the concentration camp, she uses her experiences to become a psychologist who helps people heal from their own trauma. Mrs. Oosthuizen calls it “inspiring.” Mr. and Mrs. Neethling agrees that this is an excellent book for the Larries to read. Mr. Neethling notes that the title is very fitting since the book teaches you how our day-to-day decisions affect us. This makes the book relevant for all age groups. Mrs. Neethling says she felt moved by the story. She finds the woman’s humanity remarkable and inspirational. Juffrou Uys
Juf.
Page 19
Mrs Meyer
Mr Neethling
Mrs. Meyer recently read Cutting for stone, Abraham Verghese’s first novel. She was impressed by the writing and the historical value and describes the novel as “excellent and riveting.”
The Promise written by Damon Galgut, a South African writer, in 2022 won a Booker Prize for literature. The story is about a white family, promising a black woman, who has worked for them all her life, a piece of land on their farm. Over the decades, they drift apart, but reunite at the mother’s funeral yet the promise remains unfulfilled. The book explores why the promise was never fulfilled by looking at the family members from generations spanning over three decades, as well as the influence of Apartheid.
The story follows twin brothers whose mother dies at their birth and whose father, who happens to be a surgeon, disappears. Years later, the orphaned brothers find they both have the same passion for medicine and are in love with the same woman. They split and the one returns to their home country where he is betrayed by people he trusted and the father who abandoned him. Will he be able to live with the betrayal? Will he make amends with his twin brother? The book is about this young man’s journey and the power and beauty of helping others heal. Juffrou Pedro
Mrs. Neethling and Mr. Neethling share this recommendation. Mr. Neethling feels that this is relevant seeing as it contains touching points of our lives as South Africans. It delves into the South African psyche and explores how Apartheid has influenced us in the past and still does today. Mrs. Neethling read the book out of curiosity about what made this South African writer win an international award. She reckoned that foreigners would not understand and appreciate this South African perspective. She was amazed by how the four parts of the book fit in each other and how the story unfolds. The book is a mammoth revelation of the author’s skill. Mrs. Neethling describes the book as “mind boggling”, but she warns that the book may be disturbing to some readers. Juffrou Muller

There are a few children’s classics that everyone should read, therefore Mrs Neethling recommends: Peter Rabbit, The Wind in the Willows, Winnie the Pooh, Harry Potter, The Hobbit and Pollyanna.
She enjoys the romantic era and therefore recommends any Jane Austen books and in particular “Pride and Prejudice”. This is a love story in an era where women could do only one thing– marry rich men to ensure secure lifestyles. Elizabeth Bennet, our heroine, is set on only marrying for love. She meets the mysterious Mr Darcy. At first, they find each other unbearable, but through the course of the novel they put their prejudice aside. The question remains: will they be able to swallow their pride and be wed? Mrs Neethling enjoys Holocaust stories and therefore recommends the book “Born Survivors” by Wendy Holden. The book is inspiring despite the gruesomeness it contains. This is a story about 3 ladies who secretly give birth to children in a concentration camp. It is fascinating how they keep it hidden. The children then keep together and celebrate their mothers after their deaths. The book as sad but victorious. Juffrou Vos
Ms Slabbert
“To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is her choice of recommendation. This novel follows Jem and Scout, as they grow up in the 1930s. They discover the harsh realities of their world while being guided and educated by their father, Atticus. The book deals with important issues such as sexism, prejudice, racism and justice. The book teaches you to step into the shoes of those around you and walk around in them. Mrs Slabbert found the book very beautiful and enjoyed the ending. Monsieur Botha
He recommended “Odette Toulemonde et autre histoires” by EricEmmanuel Schmitt. The book consists of 8 stories. The main character is a single mother with adult children who still reside with her, the children being a gay son and an unemployed daughter. Despite her imperfect circumstances, she is kept going by a famous author’s books and remains unexplainably happy.

WHAT TO DO AFTER MATRIC Written by Zandrija Heyns The question of WHAT TO DO AFTER MATRIC does not have straightforward answers, as there are numerous options from which to choose, which include tertiary studies, taking a gap year, or entering the job market immediately. Considering the pros and cons of the various alternatives could prove to be helpful in the decision-making process. Enrolling at a tertiary institution allows one to engage with one’s peers and obtaining a diploma or degree at a young age, while continuing on the path of lifelong learning. However, tertiary studies are extremely expensive and require a great deal of responsibility. Bucket-list pursuits, like travelling abroad, have to be placed on hold. Some students do not have the self-discipline to make a success of university life and find themselves switching from one course to another, and eventually terminating their studies entirely Some people are of the view that taking a gap year has too many drawbacks. Doing nothing may make you lazy, making the transition back to studying difficult, as you lose the momentum you have built up over the years. In the process, you do not keep up with your peers, while a year without any goals may prove to be very expensive.
However, a gap year does not have to be spent doing nothing. There are numerous short courses for which to enrol and parttime employment can fund future studies or travels abroad. A gap year could also provide you the freedom to volunteer for community service, such as helping out at a soup kitchen or any other worthy cause. If you really are uncertain about what to do after matric, then a productive gap year could help you to take a break, recharge your life and refocus while you gain valuable life skills. With so many courses offered by various institutions, it would also be to your advantage to consult useful websites such as EDUDEVELOPMENT to see which field of study you could pursue. This website even caters for Grade 9s to determine their aptitude, so that they can choose their subjects for Grade 10. While professionals can direct you along the path you are most suited for, what you do after matric is up to you. Be sure to make an informed decision. Sources: post.edu.com and the classroom.com

WAR: WHAT ARE THE FACTS AND HOW CAN WE HELP? Written by Inge van der Westhuizen
The news of Russian President, Vladimir Putin, ordering the invasion of Russia’s neighbouring country, Ukraine, has flooded all news and media outlets since February of this year, and has notably caused the highest threatening tensions between Russia and NATO allies since the Cold War. Where has all of this stemmed from? What could Putin possibly wish to achieve by attacking Ukrainian citizens? The answer can actually be traced back all the way to two major events; The Orange Revolution (2004-2005) and The Euromaidan Protests (2014). During the Cold War (1947–1991), Ukraine was under the control of the Soviet Union (USSR), a communist and socialist state that spanned most of Eurasia from 1922 to the end of the Cold War. After the dissolution of the USSR, Russia and Ukraine remained in close ties with each other, but in response to the outcome of the 2004 Ukrainian presidential election, which people believed to have been influenced by electoral fraud, corruption and voter intimidation, Ukraine became subject to a series of peaceful protests and significant political events between November of 2004 and January of 2005, which became known as The Orange Revolution. This was independent Ukraine’s first great people power revolution and marked the end of the early post-Soviet era, and Ukraine’s realignment in the democratic direction of the European Union and NATO, away from Russian ties.
According to defence analysts, Robin Laird and Murielle Delaporte, The Orange Revolution and the prospects for Ukraine to become a member of the European Union or even NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) were a “flash point” for Putin to join the new narrative of the Russian nation with the action of taking Crimea – a peninsula in Ukraine that had formed part of the USSR, which, among other military and geographical benefits, would give Russia continuing access to the naval base at Sevastopol, home to Russia’s Black Sea Navy Fleet – and “returning” it to the new Russian republic. Since large numbers of Russians still lived in Ukraine at that time and to this day, Russia wished to reclaim Ukraine’s Crimea Peninsula, which is mostly made up of ethnic Russians, claiming to want to “protect” their Russian civilians who were left over in those areas of Ukraine after it broke free from Russian power. “The Putin narrative underscores that revolution and state collapse is inherently bad, and the linking of the protection of Russians ‘abroad’ with the role of the manifest destiny of the Russian state is a core ideological challenge to modern Europe.”
Page 24
It was because of the Orange Revolution, though, that Ukraine’s media broke free from the strict government censorship that had existed before 2004. The new freedom with the press reflected Ukraine’s conflicting opinions, especially regarding their relationship with NATO, the European Union and Russian ties. Relations between NATO and Ukraine started in 1992, and Ukraine even applied to integrate with a NATO Membership Action Plan (a programme for practical support, assistance, and advice according to the individual needs of countries that want to join the Alliance) in 2008, but Ukraine’s plans for NATO membership were interrupted following the results of the 2010 presidential election, where the newly-elected Ukrainian President, Viktor Yanukovych, preferred to keep Ukraine non-aligned. In November 2013, Yanukovych made the sudden decision not to sign a free trade agreement and political association with the European Union, and rather chose once again to have closer ties to Russia. This sparked an outburst of large-scale protests that became known as the Euromaidan Protests, which ultimately resulted in the removal of President Yanukovych in 2014, and subsequently caused pro-Russian outbursts in certain areas of the country.
In February and March of 2014, Russian soldiers who were wearing unmarked green army uniforms and carrying modern Russian military weapons (known as “little green men”), seized strategic positions and infrastructure in Crimea, and eventually the Crimean Parliament. After a referendum, Crimea once more became part of Russia, and in April of 2014, pro-Russian demonstrations in the Donbas region in Ukraine, escalated to a war between the Ukrainian military and the separatists of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics, which were backed by Russia. After the parliamentary elections in October of that year, joining NATO was made a priority by the new government following Russia’s military invasion in Ukraine. The results of polls conducted between 2005 and 2013, showed that Ukrainian public support of NATO membership was still low, but following the Russian conflicts and annexation of Crimea, it had increased dramatically. In 2012 (whilst Yanukovych was still in power), a mere 28% of poll-takers were in support of NATO membership, when in 2014, roughly 50% were, and by June 2017, a poll by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation showed that 69% was in favour of joining the Alliance. NATO leaders reiterated the decision that Ukraine would join with a NATO Membership Action Plan, and emphasised Ukraine’s right to determine its own future and foreign policy independently. Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, particularly stressed that Russia did not have the ability to keep Ukraine from joining NATO, saying “as we will not return to the era of spheres of interest, when large countries decide what smaller ones do.” Before Ukraine could take any further action regarding their NATO membership, however, Ukraine was invaded by Russia on 24 February 2022. So began the war which, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR), has already taken an estimated total of 3459 civilian lives. Since then, more than 6,1 million refugees have left the country and by 21 April, an estimated 7,7 million people had been displaced within Ukraine.
Page 25
How can we help? Various organisations have banded together to raise funds to help the Ukrainian civilians, like People in Need, which provides humanitarian aid to over 200 000 people by providing food packages, emergency shelter, safe access to drinking water, hygiene items and coal, and The Ukrainian Red Cross, which is doing humanitarian work like training doctors and aiding refugees (both of which we can donate to via their websites). However, we can also make a difference by taking physical action like joining a peaceful protest, emailing government officials to take action, using our freedom of speech on various social media platforms and relaying factual and helpful information to people. By showing our support for Ukraine against Russian oppressors, raising our voices and speaking out against the injustices that are occurring in our world today, we could have a greater impact on this war than we would ever have expected, and may even have the power to call more people to join the action. The devastation that is occurring across the water may seem distant and faint, but it is real and rapidly escalating in severity. We, the mostly unaffected world, must therefore lend a helping hand to those who need it most, and be sure to remain aware of the happenings all around us, and of how privileged we are rightfully to have that which Ukrainians must fight for every day. As Howard Zinn said: “Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”
Written and illustrated by Marelize Visagie On 3 March 2022 at 12:15, Russia used airdropped bombs to hit a residential area in Ukraine. The date is marked on the bombed building as if it is a calendar. I used the melting clock of Salvador Dali to show the time, as time is melting away. The number 8 on the clock is in the form of an hourglass. The sand is red, which symbolises people's blood/life running out. The little girl has an elk toy, because the elk is an endangered species in Ukraine. This war can mean that elks are totally wiped out. Other animals also suffer because of the horrors of this war. The budgie in the cage is in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, symbolising the trapped people in Ukraine. The girl finds peace and comfort from her pet in the midst of destruction. The rings in the cage are red because the Russian flag has a red stripe and the rings make me think of a noose that was used for death sentences. The Ukrainian woman who confronted a heavilyarmed Russian soldier with sunflower seeds shook the world. Therefore lastly, in the budgie's cage, there are sunflower seeds. The sunflower seeds fell on the newspaper in the cage and on the windowsill symbolising hope.

THE COMFORT ZONE: THE MOST DANGEROUS PLACE ON EARTH! Written by Chloé Farmer The Comfort Zone, even worse than The Friend Zone, is possibly the only dangerous place on Earth where people willingly choose to stay. Maybe, if it were a blazing hot desert, or a crowded shopping mall during March of 2020, people would actually want to get out of it as quickly as possible, but it is because The Comfort Zone is so comfortable, that people seem to refuse to want to leave it! However, even though we are provided with a sense of comfort and stability by thát with which we are familiar, it is imperative to wander out of this danger zone. Before you say, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, try and recall how good it feels to find something new: a new song, friendship, Netflix series or drink at Vida. When you leave your comfort zone, you open yourself up to the possibility of finding more unexpected things to love: a love that you would never have discovered if you had not decided to step to the right instead of your usual left. Luckily, The Comfort Zone is reserved for ordinary people, and Larries, who are achievers, dreamers and visionaries, are anything but ordinary.
·Put your hand up to answer a question in class. ·Join in on the dance circles when music is played at break. Talk to that person whom you have always found interesting. Try new food. Join a sports team or club. Go to that school dance or social. Place your own order at McDonald’s (don’t ask your friend to do it this time). Get that new haircut. Those who are willing to leave their Comfort Zones are not afraid of a challenge and are curious about life, which in turn leads to greatness. No one has ever heard a successful person say, ‘Thank goodness I stayed comfortable.’ So, if every day has been feeling the same lately and you want to add something new to your daily routine, this is your sign to break free from that awful Comfort Zone which is holding you back. Everyone has different levels of comfort, so be proud of yourself for doing even the smallest thing to challenge yours.
It is time to become comfortable with the uncomfortable! To leave your Comfort Zone, you have to put away all fear of judgement and failure. Do not let your fear of looking silly hold you back. Here are a few practical ways to try it:

THE MET GALA: A SUCCESS OR FAILURE? Written by Nina Goodwin On 2 May 2022, we saw our favourite celebrities clothed in designer wear from Louis Vuitton to Miu Miu. Everyone took to Instagram to marvel at and criticise their favourite outfits. It was a starstudded evening filled with head-turning garments, but some of the outfits did beg the question – did they fit the theme? The theme this year was “Gilded Glamour” and it was the second volume of last year’s Met Gala held in September due to Covid-19. Now more celebrities could attend, as restrictions were not as rigid and we could witness their take on an anthology of fashion. The real question is: What exactly is “Gilded Glamour?” The attendees needed to comprehend what ‘gilded’ means. It could mean: to be covered in a thin layer of gold or to be wealthy, but in this context, it referred to the gilded era. Think Bridgerton, the period from 1870 to 1900 – a time of economic boom and wealth for Americans. However, unfortunate immigrants, who went to America to get jobs and achieve stability, ended up suffering as they experienced poverty and inequality. Varying degrees of an influx of wealth and desperate poverty were demonstrated on the evening
The favourite Met Gala guest, Blake Lively, wore two spectacular dresses. Other guests, like Bella Hadid and Lizzo, wore designs that reflected the theme. These outfits were clearly thought through and had much significance to them, which would have impressed Vogue, the hosts of the 74th Annual Gala. But some celebrities stole the show, but for the wrong reasons. Sebastian Stan really stood out amongst the guests in a neon pink suit that left many wondering how his attire reflected the gilded era? Kylie Jenner’s wedding gown-look was a homage to Virgil Abloh, the founder of “Off White”, who died in November of 2021. Kylie described on Instagram how the dress came to life for last year’s Gala. However, a pregnant Kylie chose not to attend. Wearing the dress this year was definitely last year’s look and theme! It was an interesting evening, but as the years progress, celebrities deviate from the theme and they use the opportunity to show with which designers they collaborate. While this is important, so are adhering to the theme and show-casing the art of fashion. Fashion is a form of art and art is subjective. The Met Gala was a major newsworthy event on the social calendar for celebrities and fashion icons alike. However, the fashion mishaps and the failure to adhere to the theme detracted from the success of the evening.

Opvoeders speel dikwels ’n deurslaggewende rol in leerders se lewens.
Haar boodskap aan die Larries is: “Be authentically yourself, even when it’s hard. You are fearfully and wonderfully made and you are loved. Surround yourself with people who make you realise that.”
Haar gunstelingwetenskaplike is Jane Goodall. Me. .

5 Teachers 5 Playlists Written by Kelsey van Sitters What better way is there to get to know someone than through music? It holds the key to their energy and presence. I interviewed a few of my teachers and asked them for five songs or Podcasts on their playlist. These results may be what you expected, or may be a shock to you. Let’s look at what these teachers have chosen.
