EXP. 08 [ Question ] How does the idea of exploration relate to good design? [ Answer ] Explorations are the mark of a good designer. To explore various fields like art, design, and science lead to magnificent discoveries. As a designer, I will keep exploring new ideas and techniques to live a life of excitement and play hard at work. Our existence has come as far as it has with innovation through observation and explorations. To investigate a subject leads to a better understanding of it and takes you places where you’re certain of a solution rather than skeptical. The divergence provided by this concept helps unfold the answer but also curtails doubts through the process of elimination. 01/08

[ Intro ] Good design is never devoid of process. This process is an exploration that leads to design discoveries and if you’re lucky, pushes personal boundaries as well. The investigation of a subject is what leads to better understanding and it’s eventual solution. The uncertainty of this process is what makes it an exploration, almost an investigation. We fail, make mistakes that help us put the pieces of this puzzle together.

EXP. 01 [ Objective ] Work into a concept an aesthetically and conceptually cohesive visual system that can work across various media for a social problem of your choosing, to tackle. [ Description ] The plastic industry doesn’t stop with food disposal, it is synonymous with our cosmetics as well. We don’t consciously make an effort to discard the cosmetic and bathroom waste produced at home. In this project, I attempted to create services, applications, and a website that can counter this problem and encourage a new way of living with sustainable and reusable products. EXP. 02 [ Objective ] To create posters (in this experimental typography class) by translating a poem written in a language you don’t understand using it’s type forms and format as a starting point to experiment. [ Description ] An abstract project that helps conceptualizing and handcrafting type using various materials like paint, spray paint, play-doh, paper etc. The steps taken to do this were to draw, build and shoot our process to work on illusions created by scale and hierarchy through photography. After divergent explorations, narrowing down to one concept — flexibility — based on an aspect within the poem, helped me converge on this subject and explore further leading to the creation of these posters. 02/08

EXP. 03 [ Objective ] Create a series of posters by experimenting with the ideas based on your understanding on type - Century Gothic. Using two alphabets, create a story with the two eventually leading to a concept. [ Description ] Picking the alphabets “O” and “V” connected the idea of contrast for me. The idea of how the forms are rounded and pointed respectively, helped me create a story that lead to a series of experiments with paper, ink, frozen gel, dye color and LED matrix lights. The journey took us to understanding a concept within human behavior that lead to choosing a motion picture that could fit the experiments concept. I picked Ex Machina, a movie based on AI and how humans can switch between being indifferent, easy going to attentive and on their feet (for their lives), which is 03/08

a huge contrast in itself.

EXP. 04 [ Objective ] A type specimen study that gives an understanding of a typeface by accentuating it’s characteristics, legibility at various point sizes, hierarchy in displaying information and overall intent for look and feel of the typeface. [ Description ] Gotham was the typeface I chose to study. This rounded typeface, as simple as it seems, was interesting to work with. To illustrate the characteristics of this typeface, I extended my study with a concept based on Richard Saul Wurman’s Information Anxiety. The book I created focuses on the concept of categorizing information into 5 hat racks which is Location, Alphabet, Time, Category and Hierarchy (or LATCH). This concept of information was a pleasurable way to give information about the typeof information for the typeface as a whole.

EXP. 05 [ Objective ] To study, understand and design a company’s Annual or Corporate Responsibility report keeping in mind the visual communication of charts, hierarchy is information and overall feel that goes with the company’s ethos and mission. [ Description ] Canon is the company I chose to work with for this project. Being a big company that focuses on selling printers and camera’s, I chose to use pixels as the concept that summed up both those products well. Pixels are the unit used for resolution of the image as well as for print. The original report had issues with pacing, hierarchy and delivery of information. It was a challenge to overcome these problems, create a system that communicated information at all levels of hierarchy (in text), created info05/08

graphics to represent visual data, and edited imagery to keep the layouts visually cohesive with the system and provide aesthetically pleasing compositions for the new report.

EXP. 06 [ Objective ] Rebrand a conference called Off Grid which was held in New Zealand and Australia. The aim is to increase awareness and attract more attendees to the conference in the process. [ Description ] The Off Grid conference emphasized on experiential design and travel between various cities. Experiential design is a broad concept that encompasses the idea of using all our senses to experience design. Keeping in mind this thought, I progressed by creating a design that focuses on an experiential journey connecting people to place by keeping them engrossed and off the grid during this design getaway. The elements and imagery are subtly hinting at a mysterious path waiting to be unraveled. This project included a redesign exercise that would span keeping a consistent visual system for all.

EXP. 07 [ Objective ] Find an advertisement on the streets of San Francisco, distill its information and revamp it by creating a system that can be used over different media for the purpose of generating interest and awareness. [ Description ] The system I created for this project was based on a flyer about a home tutor looking to help children with special needs, her focus being on english and math tutoring. The approach taken for this project was based on the unconventional methods teachers take to make learning more enjoyable and engaging for kids. The elements and colors were all picked to show the idea of progression and an upward trend in learning while keeping a positive outlook all done in the comfort of the child’s home. The deliverables for the project were selected in accordance to what would handing out and website for mass audiences.

EXP. 08 [ Objective ] Redesign a coffee table book by creating a visual system for it that consists of levels in hierarchy of information, better understanding of content, and use of subtle visual elements. [ Description ] This project, done in my second semester, helped in understanding the use of the principles of design across pages for a book to create a cohesive system. Yayoi Kusama’s book was a challenge since her preferred choice of element are dots. I chose lines as a visual element to create movement on the page that subtly navigates the viewer across the levels of information as intended. Kusama’s artwork and images helped me work with scale, hierarchy, motion and movement along with negative space to make interesting compositions as opposed to the original book. 08/08
