It is the most wonderful time of the year. Tax filing day is just around the corner. It is better than Black Friday! It is Green First Quarter. Your CPAs are busy scurrying around filing returns and helping their clients minimize their tax bills.

There is a spring in our step and a song in our heart.

We don’t like taxes anymore than you do, but we like helping you calculate the lowest amount of taxes required by law. You should only pay the least amount of tax required by law taking into consideration every allowable tax deduction and credit available. Utilizing tax deductions and credits that exist in the law is not tax avoidance but rather the proper application of the tax laws to your personal tax situation. File early and File often!

The Apple Valley Chamber Gala is only a month away, Have your purchased your tickets yet? If you thought last year was fun, then wait until you get to Enjoy on May 9th for the event of the year in Apple Valley. Enjoy has agreed to close for the evening to make this year’s Gala a truly special encounter. The theme centers around the Roaring Twenties, Prohibition and The Great Gatsby. Costumes from that era will be on display by the attendees and special beverages circa 1920 will be the toast of the evening. A few tables are still available and a barstool can be purchased to get you up close to the action.

This month’s newsletter has all the information you need to get your tickets, order a table or a barstool. You can also donate items for the silent and live auctions. This is the Chamber’s biggest fundraiser of the year and is always the funnest night around.

I look forward to seeing everyone decked out for the great evening.

A St. Patty’s Day Celebration!

VOLUNTEERISM—IS SMART Forget all the usual reasons you hear about volunteering, NETWORKING, LEADS, CONTRIBUTION, EXPERIENCE, CONTACTS, SALES, PARTNERSHIPS, FRIENDSHIPS ETC. Please note that even attending Chamber events is part of volunteerism.

Here are my personal reasons for asking that everyone give just an hour a week to your business community in some way. Raising your Chamber’s profile & influence raises yours also.

1) It’s FUN! With our Board Chairman both a CPA and a professional comedian, that is easy to say especially this year.

Most people do the same thing each day, the same goals and the same bosses asking for “more, more & more.” Committee work at the Chamber sees people smiling, having fun and breaking up the daily grind to lift their spirits. Volunteerism actually increases your productivity back on the job. Our best volunteers are those who are actually the busiest. Funny how that works. In college, I added extras courses each semester to finish a year earlier and I noticed my grades went to straight “A’s.” I learned, busy people get things done! Some of our best volunteers are the busiest people I know.

2) THE STATS! From the Corp. of National & Community Service (2012 survey to 60,000).

Women volunteer at significantly higher rates than men (30% vs. 23%) Younger 20-24 year olds volunteered the least (19%) (Teens at27%) Married volunteer at 32% vs. 20% for singles With college degree volunteer at 42% vs. 17% for High School only Working volunteer 29% vs. 24% for unemployed (busiest do volunteer more) Working women volunteer more than non-working women (36% to 27%) Women with children volunteer at 40% rate Americans average 50 hours per year volunteering at organizations Over 65 volunteer at three times the rate of 25-34 year olds (90 hrs. to 32) Fundraising is the most popular type of volunteer work

3) Find Happiness! The Nation Volunteering Network survey said 98% of volunteers say it makes them a happier person.

4) Your Legacy! In my 20 years in the Chamber & Convention & Visitors Bureau world, I have noticed that some volunteer for a few years, then after they get to the top of their game, they disappear. They’re still members that contribute greatly financially and in other ways. But there is something missing as far as opportunity for them and others. When they retire or sell their business, most of the newer crowd has little or no idea who they are. I know you but most don’t. .

Renew your legacy by hosting one big event every few years.

Many of you were long ago, committee chairs, event chairs, board members, or people who seemed to attend most

events 5, 8, 15, 20, 25 years ago. “COME BACK ON OUT.” Neither old or new know each other. Sad to me.

Get to know the best and recruit the best. Volunteering is also profitable.

I know both newer and past active members and you are all wonderful.

What made you great volunteers or business leaders is still true but no one knows. We miss you.

5) Recognition! As the tough world of work beats you up, all the Chamber does is praise you with awards, photos in the newsletters, in directories and online. It brings great recognition to your company and family too.

6) I Miss You! Some of you taught me a great deal, especially my first four or five years here. I watched, I listened and I learned. I want to tell everyone I introduce you to how great you are as a leader and person. But I can’t if you are not there.

“Lucky” people showed up for green beer and fantastic Irish food. Think Bank threw a great St. Patty’s day party! eh!

7) We Need You! This isn’t our organization; it is YOURS! Those of us on staff over the years are only the caretakers trying our best. I can plan all I want for events, fight issues, market our businesses, outreach to new businesses etc. but none is successful without your showing “the strength of our business community.” We win our issues because they “know” you’re backing us.

Participation matters and is recognized by speakers, government, press and all.

8) #1 Reason! We, the business community, appreciate you! Recently a member told me that they belong to many Chambers and the one thing that stands out about our Chamber is that we genuinely show appreciation by first “gracefully asking” and then “gratefully thanking.” We don’t expect donations and participation. Instead we try to give you recognition for your generosity with time, donations and participation. We are truly thankful.

Over 50 attended an eye-opening talk with visuals which hit home on our issues.

It was a stormy day and we decided to have the event in spite of schools closing. Then no one would leave. Thanks to all of you!
