April 15th has come and gone. Thank God! As much as an accountant likes to see tax season begin, they are just as excited to see it end. So now it is time to sit on the beach and order a Mai Tai. I have a really great spot here sitting in the sand watching all the sunbathers take in the rays. They did ban me from the nude beach.

As you can tell, I am not in Apple Valley right now. Don’t worry because I will be back in time for the Apple Valley “Great Gatsby” Gala at Enjoy! Restaurant on May 9th. I will be trading my beach chair for a Bar Stool at the Gala. Not much will change except I will be tanned and rested following a week of surfing, snorkeling and spending time at Margaritaville.

You can still get tickets to the Gala. Any ticketholder can also reserve a Barstool with your name on it, where no one but you can sit. You can get a guaranteed spot at the bar and advertising of your business. This will be the place to be, especially if you want to see the pictures from my trip.

People are finding Prohibition Era and Great Gatsby costumes that will set the mood for a fun and exciting evening. Food, drinks and atmosphere all centered around the early 1900’s will make this a gala to remember.

See you on the 9th!

First the Bad News: You survived the election’s continual negative drumbeat, surviving Cedar Construction for Transit, the Pope quitting early, Iran nukes, Korea, Benghazi, the Newtown Massacre, the Boston Massacre, stubborn unemployment, gun laws, divided Congress, inflation fears, national debt, sequester cuts, immigration, increased taxes everywhere in a unicameral state government and most often talked about, the lingering affects of a stubborn winter just. Throw Norte Dame’s Manti Te’o’s fake girlfriend, Lexington’s NCAA basketball broken leg and Tebow finally cut from the Jets. Wow! No wonder so many of us have felt a little grumpy.

The Good News: Yet as the weather warms as I collect auction items for our Great Gatsby Gala for Thursday, May 9th, I see you seeming optimistic and happy again. It has to be the warming weather as March-April was brutal with the snowiest months ever in Minnesota. The only good I hear is many of the restaurants are up 15-20% which they attribute to nobody being able to grill on their decks or go to cabins.

We Have a Remedy: The Chamber’s Great Gatsby Gala, sponsored by Dougherty, Molenda, Solfest, Hills & Bauer P.A. will reward you with fun amongst your peers. After this winter, you certainly deserve it. As a Chamber, we MUST celebrate our local F.Scott Fitzgerald.

Mayor Mary really was excited to tell all of you about so much momentum and good news in Apple Valley. There’s growth here.

Unique Things About Our Unique Great Gatsby Gala:  Don’t forget this is a “Speak Easy” & you’re invited to an underground party  This is the night before Leonardo DiCaprio’s Great Gatsby movie comes out  Our Chairman wants no live auction so you can just have FUN!  We have a trio jazz band to celebrate “The 1920’s Jazz Age”  Extensive Silent-Auction (in the bar itself to hover around)  You can even purchase a reserved bar stool with your company name on it  2 Ginger Whiskey samples given out by flappers (it will feel like prohibition)  Amazing food carving & dessert stations (menu in last month’s newsletter)  A seat for everyone with a ticket (like a wedding, with name place-cards)  Special “Batch 19” Craft Beer samples and taps just like the old days  Cigar bar outside on patio organized by last year’s Chairman Eric Iverson  Many extra fire-pits brought in for the patio by Enjoy’s owners Dan & Kay  Free photos in Black & White of you in 1920’s (Ellickson Photo has 1920’s photo props)  The Entire Enjoy is reserved just for you on a Thursday, which was generous of them  200 people attending for lots of “speak easy conversations”  You can run a tab this year with your credit card (more convenient than past)  Heavily Discounted hotel at GrandStay if you don’t want to drive home And best of all this year,  You will see our Mayor Mary in a flapper outfit and flapper hairdo with her fiancé.

Chamber Vice-Chair Jodi Kurtz started with a great joke and cheerfully moderated the “State of the City.”

If you decide to not dress for the Gatsby, that’s Ok as we expect it to be half and half. Come anyway you wish, just come, have fun and a few laughs to forget about all that bad news from the long winter. A great way to start your summer!

F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul and his father “Edward” owned a wicker furniture store. That failed and he and his family spent most of his first decade in life near my hometown in Upstate NY in Syracuse where his father was a salesman for Proctor & Gamble. They moved back to St. Paul when he was 12, as his Irish Mother’s family had made a fortune here as wholesale grocers.

Francis Scott Key who wrote the Star Spangled Banner was his second cousin. He became known for living an extravagant playboy lifestyle in much the same way as his famous novel “The Great Gatsby”.

May 9th let’s repeat the past one more time with the TOP PARTY of the YEAR in APPLE VALLEY and one F. Scott would be proud of. We’ll toast as he did, “to your health and wealth” as this party is for YOU! I bet a lot of people in 1928 wished they had spent their money before they lost it the next year anyways. The future is uncertain but May 9th is certain to be exciting and the place to be and be seen.
