Advantages of the improved fuel can pay back for the production costs in applications with large biomass consumptions which require long transport distances and / or applications which require very fine biomass pulverization.

Some examples of these applications are: biomass cofiring in coal power plants, second generation biofuels production and pellet production for international trade.

Torrefaction is based on the slow heating of biomass up to 230300ยบC in an oxygen free atmosphere. Reactions involved in the process generate changes in the biomass structure reducing the fiber content and increasing the low heating value. Power consumption for milling torrefied biomass is decreased and after pelletization the energy density of the fuel.
