ARCHITECTURE And CRIME THESIS PROJECT
The psychological threat of the vast barriers created by freeways today has developed the nodes of lost dimensions all over the greater Los Angeles area. This leads to the common misconception and depreciation of the communities. With labeling of these areas as “ghettos”, the growth of these poverty-stricken areas increased in population but decreased in jobs and education, only to promote the introduction of gang related activities in these communities. The urban environment has since decayed and continues to face gentrification. The premise of this thesis is to invent a new typological development that will focus on crime prevention through architecture for potential Civic Engagement opportunities operated for the public to protect, inhabit and grow from. Through manipulation of form, material and site, the architecture is able to establish itself as a key component that the public utilize to prevent crime from taking place.
OUTDOOR INSTALLATIONS HAVING THE INSTALLATION ART AREA OUTSIDE ALLOWS FOR THE PROGRAM TO PUSH OUT THE FOOT TRAFFIC FROM THE INNER GALLERY TO UTILIZE THE FULL POTENTIAL OF THE ARCHITECTURES NATURAL SURVAILLANCE CAPIBILITES IN ORDER TO REDUCE ANY POTENTIAL CRIME FROM TAKING PLACE.
ART GALLERY
BOYLE HEIGHTS HAS ALWAYS HAD A CULTURE OF ARTISTIC VALUES. ALLOWING FOR A GALLERY SPACE ALLOWS FOR ART EVENTS TO TAKE PLACE. IT ALSO PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL ARTISTS TO INPUT THEIR ART AND HAVE IT BE RECOGNIZED
ART // INSTALLATION GALLERY//
A - APPRECIATING DEPRECIATION LOCAL ARTISTS HAVE A PLACE THEIR ART CAN BE INSTALLED, CREATING POTENTIAL RECOGNITION FOR THEIR WORK
B - LATE ACCESS THE BUILDING OCCUPANCY TIME-FRAME EXPANDS PAST 6PM
C - GROUND SURVAILANCE
FACES AMPHITHEATER SPACE AND ALLOWS LATE COMMUNAL ACITIVITIES TO TAKE PLACE IN FRONT PLAZA SPACE
RESTAURANT
THE PURPOSE OF THE RESTAURANT WAS TO INCORPORATE A PROGRAM THAT WOULD BE ACCESSED UNTIL LATE HOURS, MAINTAIN CONSISTANCY OF PEOPLE OCCUPYING IT AND MOST IMPORTANTLY TO OVERLOOK ANYTHING THAT TAKES PLACE WITHIN THE FRONT PLAZA SPACE. THE RESTAURANT IS ALSO MEANT TO ATTRACT PEOPLE FROM SURROUNDING CITIES TO COME GET FOOD THAT IS SPECIFICALLY FOUND IN BOYLE HEIGHTS.
SITE ANALYSIS & CRIME MAPPING
AREA SPECIFIC RESTAURANTS //
A - INCREASED FOOT TRAFFIC BRINGS IN RESIDENTS FROM SURROUNDING CITIES TO GET FOOD SPECIFIC TO BOYLE HEIGHTS CULTURE
B - LATE OCCUPANY BEING A RESTAURANT EXTENDS HOURS OF OPERATION ALLOWING FOR LONGER HOURS OF NATURAL SURVAILLANCE
C - NATURAL SURVAILANCE
THE RESTAURANT FRONTS UTILIZE THE FRONT PLAZA SPACE AND ALSO SERVE AS EXTENDED SEATING AREAS
BUILDING ENTRANCE
OUTDOOR MARKET
THE ENTRANCE OF THE BUILDING BONDS WITH THE ADMINISTRATION OFFICE UPON ENTRY. ITS OPENING SERVES AS A FUNNEL LIKE STRUCTURE THAT PULLS PEOPLE IN BUT ALSO ALLOWS FOR CLEAR VISION THROUGH TO THE SIDE PLAZA FOR THOSE ENTERING THE BUILDING.
THE IDEA OF THE OUTDOOR ADDITION TO THE MARKET CAME FROM THE INFLUENCE OF TRADITIONAL MARKETS IN MEXICO THAT TAKE PLACE IN LARGE OUTDOOR AREAS. THE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR MARKET CONNECT AS ONE LARGE SCALE PROGRAM ONCE ITS BI-FOLD DOORS OPEN UP. BY CONNECTING INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SPACES THE IDEOLOGY OF A MEXICAN MARKET IS TAKEN TO A NEW STANDARD.
AUDITORIUM
ADMINISTRATION OFFICES
THE AUDITORIUM SPACE WAS ORIGINALLY INCORPORATED TO THE BUILDING FOR ESTABLISHING TO CREATE LARGE GATHERING SPACES WITHIN THE BUILDING. ITS PURPOSE WAS TO GAIN POTENTIAL COMMUNAL GATHERING SPACES THAT COULD ALSO BE USED FOR LECTURES CONFERENCES AND OTHER EVENTS THAT MIGHT TAKE PLACE INSIDE WHEN OUTSIDE CONDITIONS ARE NOT PROPER DUE TO WEATHER. THE AUDITORIUM MANIPULATES THE GROUND PLANE AND EXTENDS TO THE GOLD LINE BELOW TO NOT ONLY PROVIDE WHAT IT DOES BUT TO SURVAIL THE AREA UNDERGROUND AS WELL
THE ADMINISTRATION OFFICES PROVIDE FOR A FEEL OF OVERHEAD ON THE SITE. THOUGH IT IS AN ARCHITECTURE FOR THE PUBLIC TO UTILIZE, IT IS ALSO A NECESSITY TO HAVE ADMIN ON HAND TO GIVE A FEEL OF AUTHORITY TO THE SPACE UPON ENTRY TO CONTROL ANY POTENTIAL CRIME THAT MIGHT TAKE PLACE
ENTRANCE // ADMIN OFFICES// PROGRAM DIAGRAMS

INDOOR MARKET
WITH ITS LARGE SCALE, THE MARKET ALLOWS FOR HIGH VOLUME OF FOOT TRAFFIC WHERE PEOPLE CAN SHOP FOR GOODS AND MORE. BY UTILIZING ITS LARGE GLASS OPENINGS AND ITS GLASS PANEL FLOOR THE MARKET USERS ARE GIVEN CLEAR VIEWS TO WHATS HAPPENING ON THE STREET AND BELOW THEM IN THE AMPHITHEATER SPACE.
A - INCREASED FOOT TRAFFIC LARGE LECTURES COULD BRING LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE INTO THE AREA WHICH COULD ASSIST LOCAL BUSINESS
B - BUILDS COMMUNITY ALLOWS THE COMMUNITY TO ESTABLISH GATHERINGS/MEETINGS IN WHICH THEY CAN DISCUSS COMMUNAL TOPICS
C - NATURAL SURVAILANCE
THE AUDITORIUM ALLOWS IT TO EXTEND DOWN TO THE GOLD LINE TO KEEP EVERY POINT OF THE AREA SAFE.
INDOOR // OUTDOOR MARKET //
A - INCREASED FOOT TRAFFIC ATTRACTION TO 95% HISPANIC POPULATION BECAUSE OF MODERNIZED MEXICAN MARKET CONCEPT
B - BUILDING COMMUNITY GATHERING GROUND FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS TO FEEL SAFE COMING TO
C - NATURAL SURVAILANCE
HIGH FOOT TRAFFIC WITH INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SURVAILANCE
ART GALLERY
WITH A HIGH CULTURE IN ARTISIC VALUES, BOYLE HEIGHTS IS A CANVAS IN ITS OWN. WITH AN ART AS A TRUE ATTRACTION THE OUTDOOR INSTALLATION AREA’S LARGER SQF SIZE FORCES THOSE INSIDE THE ART GALLERY TO PUSH OUT ONTO THE PLATFORM DUE TO THE LARGER OPEN SPACE OUTSIDE.
OUTDOOR MARKET
THE OUTDOOR MARKET FLOOR PLATE ALLOWS EXTENSION TO THE MARKET TO PUSH FROM THE INTERIOR TO THE EXTERIOR. THE KEY IS TO UTILIZE A PROGRAMS ABILITY TO AQCUIRE SUCH HIGH FOOT TRAFFIC TO PROVIDE THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF EYES LOOKING INTO THE GALLERY, THE FLOOR BELOW AND THE SITE AROUND
PERSPECTIVE
MARKET SPACE
THE INTERIOR MARKET SPACE OVERLOOKS MAJORITY OF THE PROGEAMS. IT IS ALSO USES A GLASS PLANE AMONG THE FRONT OF THE PLATE THAT CHANGES THE IDEA OF SOMETHING CANTILEVERING OVER. INSTEAD OF COVERING THE SPACE IT ALLOWS TRANSPARENCY TO ABOVE FROM BELOW AND BELOW FROM ABOVE.
AUDITORIUM // LECTURE HALL
GOLD LINE // PLATFORM THE GOLD LINE PLATFORM ALLOWS FOOT TRAFFIC TO FLOW FROM THE LINE TO THE BUILDING. THIS FORCES ACCESS THROUGH THE BUILDING FOR THOSE ARRIVING AT THAT STOP.
THE LECTURE HALL LOOKS LIKE A ONE STORY STRUCTURE ON THE GROUND LEVEL BUT IT ACTUALLY MANIPULATES PASSED GROUND LEVEL AND CONNECTS THE BUILDING ON TWO LEVELS MAKING A VISUAL CONNECTION TO WHATS GOING ON IN THE SUBWAY STATION. THIS GIVES A GLIMPSE OF THE BUILDING ABOVE.
MAIN FLOOR
THE MAIN FLOOR OF THE BUILDING CONSISTS OF THE ADMIN OFFICE, RESTROOMS, ACCESS FROM THE GOLD LINE ESCALATORS, ENTRY TO THE AUDITORIUM AND HAS ELEVATOR AND RAMP ACCESS TO THE MARKET ON THE SECOND STORY. AMONG ENTRY IT ALSO HAS A CONNECTION TO THE ART GALLERY ABOVE. THERE ARE TWO POINTS OF ENTRY INTO THE BUILDING ON THIS FLOORPLATE.

monument 31 5TH YEAR
The main structure of Monument 31 has distinctive features that enable structure, community and organization of space. Education, culture and entertainment are wrapped and noted on each. Each pillar chiseled, sculpted and modified by the tectonics of the structure and spatial performance. We propose to revitalize a public space where we accumulate the main arteries that stress, interact and promote communicational multi-use. A Longitudinal STUDY MODEL-TOP VIEW park space and plaza encloses by Monument 31 and the Villa itself. This serves as a link of transition. The project is vital to strengthen and revitalize existing public open space to generate a new logic of appropriation that arises as the central focus of meeting place for citizen empowerment SITE MODEL-TOP VIEW MODEL-TOP VIEW

WESTFIELD ARTS CENTER PERSONAL PROJECT
Located in the heart of Woodland Hills, CA the Westfield Arts Center establishes communal ground and understanding of traditions of art base. Famous for its shopping centers and public attraction, the Westfield company is desperately in need of developing a center for appreciation and public involvement which is why I proposed this arts center in its name beside the massive attraction, Topanga Mall. Based beside its all new village and the shopping center itself, the Arts center allows for live performances, art installations, educational zones such as libraries and dance rooms where the public may use to learn about the arts, influences and many other reasons behind all the retail attraction. The Westfield Arts Center establish true communal ground and gives a taste of its true colors within the architecture and the programs that come within itself.

JOSHUA TREE MEDITATION CENTER JOSHUA TREE, CA
joshua tree meditation center 4TH YEAR
When thinking of a monk, meditation, simplicity, and seclusion from the outside world comes to mind. The Joshua Tree Meditation Center takes these focuses and becomes the meditation as a building broken down into three stages to serve as the purification process occupants would go through upon entry. The purpose is to use a simple grid structure that would allow the design of minimal distractions in movement through the building to help individuals from the dessert, taking the image of feeling lost and confused out of their minds, almost like closing your eyes during meditation. The second stage consists of a library and classrooms which helps find ones self through knowledge and education . From there, the individual is brought to the third and final stage where they become one with earth through the pottery room. Shortly after the three stage PERSPECTIVE process, occupants are then released into a re-FRONT ENTRANCE defined and reorganized image of Joshua Tree National Park within its courtyard. NTS

FEIT HOUSE
PROFESSIONAL WORK
Originally having a small single story home, the clients clients requested for a design to allow more space for them to live in rather than having all the rooms bunched together the way they were. With ideas of back houses, expansions and more knocked out of the way, we proceeded to implementing a second story addition on the home. The second story addition allowed for certain non-load bairing walls to be removed to provide an open floor plan. By adding the master bedroom above on the second story we were able to give our clients larger living, dining and backyard space by expanding out the house on the first story to the backyard. Above the dining room we were able to provide the clients with a balcony space for them to enjoy privately rather than accessing ground level deck upon exit of the house. With much more room added due to better arrangement of the floor plan, the clients house now is well fitted for the family and their needs.

pump’d nutrition PROFESSIONAL WORK
Located in Long Beach, CA; Pump’d Nutrition is stepping up to the trend of working out and providing a delicious yet nutritious alternative. The client requested a continous resemblance to the chains colors so we decided to implement wall graphics and color coordination with some of the furniture pieces. With a modern/industrial feel to it, Pump’d attracts to its surrounding architecture as well as the younger crowd from the local gym. The client also mentioned incorporating an office where she would be able to meet with business partners regarding their matters so we decided to place it in the back of the store overlooking the store front where she is given natural surveilance of her shop.

THUN HOUSE
PROFESSIONAL WORK
Thun house is located in the Palisades and was originally a one story home but the clients requested three stories. The main floor consisted of the living room, entrance and kitchen area. The second floor was private areas like bedrooms and a personal office. Last but not least was the man cave in the basement level. With the advantage of a full height room, we were able to work with more options. The room now includes a full theatre system along with a wine room and a golf simulator to perfect your swing.
