September Word Made Flesh
A Companion to the Sunday Readings (Cycle C) CHRISTOPHER WEST One of the most influential movements in the Church today is centered on St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body (TOB), of whose teachings Christopher West is the preeminent translator for a popular audience. In Word Made Flesh, West offers reflections on an entire cycle of Sunday Mass readings through the lens of TOB, providing a fresh way to process and act on the Good News by orienting our desires for union with God with our understanding of ourselves and our relationships. St. John Paul II’s TOB is most often framed as an extended catechesis on human sexuality and married love. It is that to be sure but, as John Paul II observed, what we learn in the TOB “concerns the whole Bible” and the “whole mission of Christ.” West takes us on a tour of the Sunday readings throughout the liturgical year and opens their hidden meaning, allowing God’s word to take flesh in our own lives. In a clearly written introduction, West provides a primer on TOB—an overview of its main teachings and an explanation of how these teachings brilliantly illuminate the whole story of salvation from Genesis to Revelation. In Word Made Flesh, West offers distinctive reflections on all fifty-two Sunday readings from the first Sunday of Advent through Christ the King Sunday. The reflections naturally and deeply connect with the human experience of living with body and soul in the world while also contemplating the nature of the glorified body in the eternal kingdom to come. The material in Word Made Flesh can be used as a weekly devotional or as a preparation for Sunday Mass. Subsequent editions of Word Made Flesh will be released prior to the start of liturgical cycles A (Advent 2019) and B (Advent 2020).

October What Do You Want to Know?
A Pastor’s Response to the Most Challenging Questions about the Catholic Faith CARDINAL DONALD WUERL Foreword by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo You’ve probably heard statements such as these: “There is no God.” “I’m spiritual but not religious.” “Science has made religion obsolete.” Cardinal Donald Wuerl can help you navigate these often difficult conversations. In What Do You Want to Know?, Wuerl addresses twenty-six of today’s most common misconceptions of the faith and the Church and offers everyday Catholics encouragement for framing responses in a way that can be an invitation to friendship. Many Catholics are confronted with statements and questions that challenge their faith. Employing a conversational tone and friendly style, What Do You Want to Know? sets out to answer each one, responding, as Wuerl says, “to friends who think they are enemies.” A work of popular apologetics, Wuerl tackles each concern, explaining, illuminating, and challenging all who read What Do You Want to Know? with the truth of the Christian faith and the essential purpose of the Catholic Church in the world today. He also takes the pressure off people who may not feel able to provide philosophical proof of God’s existence by telling them that their personal experience of faith in God can be just as (or perhaps even more) effective. Those who pose challenging questions or statements will be drawn into conversation by Wuerl’s thoughtful answers. Catholic educators, pastors, parish leaders, and parents also will find the book to be essential for their use in catechesis and evangelization.
“A splendid work of apologetics!” Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan Archbishop of New York
“These aren’t the musings of a disconnected professor, locked in his ivory tower. They’re the responses of a spiritual father, in touch and in tune with real people asking difficult questions.” Brandon Vogt

Don’t Forget to Say Thank You
And Other Parenting Lessons That Brought Me Closer to God LINDSAY SCHLEGEL Foreword by Danielle Bean Do you hear yourself saying the same things over and over to your kids? “Do you need help?” “Say thank you.” “Wait a minute.”
978-1-59471-809-0 • 160 pages • $15.95 On-Sale Date: August 24, 2018 Foreign Rights: World • 5.5" x 8.5" • Paperback Category: Christian Living / Women’s Spirituality Imprint: Ave Maria Press
LINDSAY SCHLEGEL is a freelance writer and editor and a regular contributor to Verily magazine and CatholicMom.com. She served in various roles in the book publishing industry for more than a decade. She lives with her family in northern New Jersey. DANIELLE BEAN is the brand manager at CatholicMom.com and is the author of Small Steps for Catholic Moms.
In Don’t Forget to Say Thank You, Lindsay Schlegel reimagines the common phrases we repeat as parents and applies them to our relationship with God. In doing so, she demonstrates how reflecting on our vocation as mothers can inform and illuminate our role as a daughter of God, drawing us closer to him. Schlegel shares fifteen relatable phrases she frequently uses as a parent and how her faith and life changed when she envisioned God telling her these same things. When we start to hear the things we’re telling our kids as wisdom from God, it’s clear that the lessons we are trying to teach our kids are ones we also need to learn as children of the Most High. Asking her daughter, “Do you need help?” caused Schlegel to reflect on the importance of the Communion of Saints and reaching out for assistance. Telling her children, “Say you’re sorry” reminded her of the necessity of Confession and seeking forgiveness. And pleading that a toddler “wait a minute” while she looked for her crackers forced Schlegel to consider how she needed to have both more patience and more trust that God would take care of her. Schlegel invites us to apply the same lessons to our own lives as parents and as children of God through reflection questions and a prayer at the end of each chapter. She also suggests saints to whom we can look for inspiration and guidance.
FEATURES & BENEFITS: • Lindsay Schlegel plans to offer videos and a guide for group discussion.

August Gaze Upon Jesus
Experiencing Christ’s Childhood through the Eyes of Women EDITED BY KELLY M. WAHLQUIST Foreword by Teresa Tomeo What if you had walked beside the Virgin Mary from the Annunciation to the point at which she and Joseph found Jesus in the temple? How might seeing Christ as a child impact you and your faith?
WINE: Women In the New Evangelization’s second, six-week scripture study follows the infancy and early years of Christ as seen through the eyes of Mary and other familiar and imagined women in the gospels. Founder Kelly Wahlquist and ten other members of WINE uniquely blend scripture reflections, imaginative encounters, and visio divina “sacred seeing” with practical spirituality and discussion questions that will help you take a prayerful and creative journey through Advent and the Christmas season. Not much is known about the childhood of Jesus, but the gospels highlight six key moments in his early life: • the angel Gabriel proclaiming Jesus’ birth to Mary at the Annunciation • a pregnant Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth • the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem • the presentation of Jesus in the temple • the flight of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus to Egypt • discovering the twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple Week by week, you will dig deep into each of the scriptural vignettes of Jesus’ early life and grow in your faith as you learn about virtues such as humility, patience, charity, reverence, prudence, and courage. Each chapter uses an image that allows you to practice visio divina, the ancient practice of praying with sacred art. The images are included in an eight-page, full-color insert.
FEATURES & BENEFITS: • WINE is a thriving Catholic women’s apostolate reaching thousands of women at national and regional conferences across the United States each year. • WINE’s first book, Walk in Her Sandals, has sold more than 10,000 copies.

September The Grace of Enough Pursuing Less and Living More in a Throwaway Culture HALEY STEWART Foreword by Brandon Vogt
Do you ever feel caught in an endless cycle of working harder and longer to get more while enjoying life less? The Stewart family did—and they decided to make a radical change. Popular Catholic blogger and podcaster Haley Stewart explains how a year-long internship on a sustainable farm changed her family’s life for the better, allowing them to live gospel values more intentionally. When Haley Stewart married her bee-keeping sweetheart, Daniel, they dreamed of a life centered on home and family. But as the children arrived and Daniel was forced to work longer hours at a job he liked less and less, they dared to break free from the unending cycle of getting more yet feeling unfulfilled. They sold their Florida home and retreated to Texas to live on a farm with a compost toilet and 650 square feet of space for a family of five. Surprisingly, they found that they had never been happier. In The Grace of Enough, Stewart shares essential elements of intentional Christian living that her family discovered during that extraordinary year on the farm and that they continue to practice today. You, too, will be inspired to: • live simply • reconnect with the land • prioritize beauty • be intentional about technology • center life around home, family, and relationships Drawing from Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’, Stewart identifies elements of Catholic social teaching that will enhance your life and create a ripple effect of grace to help you overcome the effects of today’s “throwaway” culture and experience a deeper satisfaction and stronger faith.
FEATURES & BENEFITS: • Haley Stewart is a popular Catholic podcaster (Fountains of Carrots) and blogger (Carrots for Michaelmas). • Questions for group study are included in the book.

Everyone wants to understand God’s will for their lives. Paintner shares one of the most ancient paths to that understanding from her study of monasticism and immersion into Celtic spirituality while living in Ireland. The Celtic way, which Paintner distills into twelve practices, offers discernment that focuses on the environment rather than the intellectual focus present in other forms of discernment. It allows for what Paintner calls the “soul’s slow ripening,” coming into the fullness of our own sweetness before we pluck the fruit. Each chapter begins with a story of a particular Irish saint— some well-known like Patrick or Brigid, others less so, such as Ita and Ciaran—and then introduces a helpful practice for discernment that the saint’s life illustrates. Paintner explores the call of dreams, the importance of thresholds, the practice of peregrination (wandering for the love of God), walking the rounds, learning by heart, soul friends, blessing each moment, and the wisdom of the landscape and the seasons. Readers are invited to explore these concepts through photography and writing. Paintner invites us to contemplative walks with specific themes along with poetic writing prompts for expression. As you explore an alternate way of discerning a spiritual path, you’ll become more aligned with creativity and wholeness.
FEATURES & BENEFITS: • AbbeyoftheArts.com receives 50,000 page views and more than 10,000 unique visitors per month. Her weekly email newsletter has 9,000 subscribers and continues to grow. • Paintner’s previous books with Sorin Books have combined sales of about 50,000 copies.

October Off the Hook
God, Love, Dating, and Marriage in a Hookup World TIMOTHY P. O’MALLEY Hookup culture is about much more than the quest for pleasure. It also teaches us to treat each other as objects for personal satisfaction. Even those who reject the hookup culture can still be negatively affected by it. In Off the Hook, Timothy P. O’Malley, professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, shows how God’s plan for love serves to heal the wounds of hookup culture and is a medicine for what ails our understanding of sex, romance, love, and marriage. Here are a few things O’Malley found out from students in his popular undergraduate course—Nuptial Mystery: Divine Love and Human Salvation—at Notre Dame: • Hookup culture is present in all students’ lives, whether they’re hooking up or not. • Some students approach love as a transitory and fleeting transaction—they love the idea of romance; they love the sexual chase; and they crave the hookup, but not the commitment. • Other students have come to idolize the mystery of marriage and so their conception of what sex, love, and marriage will be like is overly romanticized and largely naive. O’Malley explains how the ethics of hooking up shape relationships and examines the considerable harm that results. By exploring the sacrament of marriage in its biblical, theological, and liturgical dimensions, he offers Catholic young adults and those charged with their formation and pastoral care a wealth of insight into God’s plan for love.
FEATURES & BENEFITS: • The McGrath Institute for Church Life will vigorously promote this book at various events throughout the United States where the author speaks on the sacrament of marriage.

October Lessons from a Troubadour
A Lifetime of Parables, Prose, and Stories JOHN MICHAEL TALBOT Master singer-storyteller John Michael Talbot’s concert meditations—heard and appreciated by millions of concert-goers over the last halfcentury—are now available in this unique volume. This collection of parables and stories reveals Talbot’s mystical, monastic heart and gives him an opportunity to present the Christian faith in holy and ordinary language. As Talbot’s music became more popular over the years, he began to immerse himself in the teachings of the contemplatives, mystics, and monastic fathers and mothers of the Christian tradition. In time he began to share some of that teaching with his audiences between songs during concerts and during retreats, parish missions, and diocesan conventions. While on stage, this Grammy-winning contemporary Christian music pioneer is known as much for his stories between songs as he is for his playing and singing. Talbot fans will savor his wise reflections on the mystery of the Trinity, the intimate love of Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount as the heart of Christian teaching, and the need to find what he calls our own “inner room” for prayer and contemplation. Lessons from a Troubadour gathers this material into book form for the first time. Talbot’s words open an important window into understanding the Catholic faith. Both inspiring and practical, you’ll find ways to apply it to your daily life as well.
FEATURES & BENEFITS: • John Michael Talbot is a Grammy-winning legend of contemporary Christian music. • Talbot is recognized as one of Catholic music’s most popular artists and composers with multiplatinum sales and compositions published in hymnals throughout the world.

September Christ in the Classroom
Lesson Planning for the Heart and Mind JARED DEES If the goal of catechesis is to cultivate an encounter with Christ, why do religious educators spend so much time focused almost exclusively on ideas and not experiences? The reason is that many have never been shown a method that inspires the heart while also instructing the mind. Jared Dees, creator of the popular website The Religion Teacher, shows how applying the steps of lectio divina to teaching can reorient religious education toward encountering the person of Christ rather than merely sharing information about him. In Christ in the Classroom Dees applies the four steps of lectio divina—reading/learning, meditation, prayer, and contemplation—to the ministry of catechesis. He offers teachers and catechists a practical framework for preparing lessons that broaden the focus of teaching from mostly intellectual learning to also encountering Christ in prayer, reflection, and action. Students and catechists will come to know intimately the person of Christ at the same time that they are learning the tenets and traditions of the Church. Dees shares stories of success and failure from his own teaching and he offers dozens of field-tested strategies, tactics, and teaching methods to effectively integrate the steps of lectio divina into the classroom or other catechetical setting.
FEATURES & BENEFITS: • Jared Dees created The Religion Teacher website in 2009 and reaches 37,000 individuals via the site’s email list. • Dees is an award-winning author whose first three books with Ave Maria Press have sold almost 20,000 copies combined.

September The Priestly Blessing
Rediscovering the Gift STEPHEN J. ROSSETTI Foreword by Cardinal Donald Wuerl A bestselling author and leading expert on the Catholic priesthood, Msgr. Stephen J. Rossetti forges a renewed theology of priestly blessing, encouraging his brother priests to embrace the habit of blessing people, objects, and events. He shows how the blessing is integral to the identity of priests and crucial to the spiritual wellbeing of the faithful.
Rossetti fears that many priests shy away from blessing people and objects because of a lack of awareness of the rich tradition of Church blessings and a deficit in training for this important pastoral practice. In The Priestly Blessing, Rossetti urges priests to boldly and frequently embrace this ancient practice because of their unique calling. Rossetti traces the history of blessing in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. He also explores the various types of blessing, such as praise of God, the invocation of special benefit from God, and being consecrated to God. The Priestly Blessing also helps priests reflect on what saints and mystics have taught about blessing as a vital activity of the Church, and outlines connections between Catholic sacramental theology, the practice of priestly blessing, and the Catholic understanding of creation that helps make sense of priests blessing objects and animals.
FEATURES & BENEFITS: • Msgr. Stephen J. Rossetti’s five books on the Catholic priesthood published by Ave Maria Press have sold more than 86,000 copies.

August La Iglesia
Pueblo de Dios llamado a la communion HOSFFMAN OSPINO The refrain of a popular Spanish hymn proclaims, “I am the Church, you are the Church, we are the Church.” With this as a keynote, Hosffman Ospino draws on the deep conviction among Hispanic Catholics that they are called to be the Church— locally, nationally, and globally—and provides a basic introduction to the nature and mission of the Church.
In La Iglesia, the Church’s origin, structure, history, and mission are explored in light of the experience of Hispanic Catholics in the United States. Ospino explains what every Hispanic Catholic in the United States needs to know about being part of the People of God, connecting his message to the everyday experience of people in their families and faith communities. Topics include: • the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ • the role of the Holy Spirit • the marks of the Church • the vision of the Church in Second Vatican Council • Pope Francis’s vision of the Church as a community of disciples Part of the Ave Maria Press Recursos para el ministerio hispano series, La Iglesia is perfect for lay ministers, catechists, people in the RCIA, and leaders of small faith communities. Lessons from the Life and Writings of Thomas Merton EDITED BY JON M. SWEENEY Some of today’s most popular spiritual writers—including Rev. James Martin, S.J.; Bishop Robert Barron; Robert Ellsberg; Rev. Daniel P. Horan, O.F.M.; and Kaya Oakes—explore the meaning of life and what we live for using Thomas Merton’s life and writings as a guide. 978-1-59471-741-3, 224 pages, $16.95
“These reflections by contemplative educators perfectly commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the death of a master teacher.” Jonathan Montaldo
Editor of The Intimate Merton
40th Anniversary Edition
Merton’s Palace of Nowhere JAMES FINLEY Foreword by Henri J. M. Nouwen
For forty years, James Finley’s Merton’s Palace of Nowhere has been the standard text for exploring, reflecting on, and understanding the rich vein of Thomas Merton’s thought. Spiritual identity is the quest to know who we are, to find meaning in our lives, and to overcome that sense of “Is this all there is?” Merton’s message cuts to the heart of this universal quest. 978-0-87793-041-9, 160 pages, $16.95
“Let Finley introduce you to one of the greatest spiritual masters of our age and the man whose writings changed many lives, including my own.” Rev. James Martin, S.J.
In Praise of the Useless Life A Monk’s Memoir PAUL QUENON, O.C.S.O. Foreword by Pico Iyer
Monastic life and its counter-cultural wisdom come alive in the stories and lessons of Br. Paul Quenon, O.C.S.O., during his more than five decades as a Trappist at the Abbey of Gethsemani. He served as a novice under Thomas Merton and also welcomed some of its more well-known visitors, including Sr. Helen Prejean and Seamus Heaney, to Merton’s hermitage. In Praise of the Useless Life includes Br. Paul’s quiet reflections on what it means to live each day with careful attentiveness. 978-1-59471-759-8, 160 pages, $15.95
“This beautiful book is both simple and profound, written with humor, a grounded sense of humanness, and luminous attention to what lies at the heart of things.” Sue Monk Kidd

Mission Statement
Founded in 1865 at Notre Dame, Indiana, Ave Maria Press, a ministry of the Congregation of Holy Cross, is a Catholic publishing company that serves the spiritual and formative needs of the Church and its schools, institutions, and ministers; Christian individuals and families; and others seeking spiritual nourishment. In the tradition of Holy Cross, we are committed, as educators in the faith, to helping people know, love, and serve God and to spreading the gospel of Jesus through books and other resources.
