Dorian Is unstoppable. This man’s hard work and dedication to his health and passion for windsurfing are paying off. For those of you who don’t know Dorian, a Dutch competitive athlete who specializes in the sport of Wind Surfing. Dorian won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic in London and also recently won the gold medal in 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. We couldn’t be happier for him. It wasn’t that long ago that he approached us because he had been using our products and found them to blend seamlessly with his training and personal philosophy. Avena Originals is proud to know that through his grueling training for these Olympics we were right there in spirit and nutritional support. I have a keen interest in probiotics. I was looking online and found your company. It seems you have a really high quality set of strains in your Proteolytic Probiotic. But, I’ve also been reading about the benefits of human strains in probiotics. Does your Proteolytic Probiotic have human strains? How would they compare? Hannah from Winnipeg
Hello Hannah. Thanks for your question. We’ve been getting a few calls on human strain probiotics as well; here is what we can tell you, and what we know. In the strictest sense ‘human strain’ is simply a marketing term. Legally (in Canada) without medical supervision there is no way to give one human something directly from within another (like a transplant). This applies across the board, which means that there is no company commercially producing for resale, actual bacteria that were collected directly from the gut of another person. Rather a sample from a human was used to extract the ‘original strain’ of bacteria. This strain was then safely recultured in a laboratory. What does this mean for you as a consumer? If you find a product with L. Acidophilus this could be a human origin strain, or simply the same strain found from a non-human source. Regardless of the original collection source this bacteria is alive and culturing in the body, most of all it isn’t foreign; this probiotic is naturally occurring within the human body. Some companies specifically market if their product is an outside source; you may be familiar with the term ‘soil based organisms’ to define bacteria that is earth based, or found from nature. This information though, tells you nothing of the quality, effectiveness, or potency of the product, only the original source. At Avena the source is a factor, but for us, we would much rather have a dynamic probiotic that has proven effectiveness in the gut and intestinal tract. If it doesn’t do you good, why does it matter where it came from? Each of our strains has been researched and studied to be efficient and work within the human body. This, in our opinion is the greatest asset. All that said, our Proteolytic Probiotics are all are shown to be naturally occurring within the human body, (some human origin) but all of them are incredibly dynamic and the result is an elite and world class Probiotic that is second to none.

Do you or someone you know suffer from some form of physical health issue? You’re not alone! Too many people walk the path of ill-health alone and waiting for help, support, and answers.
The Pivot Point This happened to one of the founding members of Avena. Then someone close to us became sick with something debilitating and terminal. Through this adversity, this person was ready, and willing to put in the work, to create change in their life – regain health. These founders understood the principle that “If nothing changes, nothing changes” and they were ready. So began a search of unprecedented proportions. The founders of Avena banded together: to seeking understanding and wisdom, to drive forward and find tools that could be used to regain health, and to answer those questions they were now facing (the same that you may be asking yourself right now).
For people who desire to take control of their well-being, there is hope; anything is possible. All too often we tend to get narrow views that distract focus from the greater picture. Instead of looking at the entire human body we zoom in on a particular ailment or problem and seek remedies for separate issues. One key part we wish never to forget is we should never lose sight of the whole picture. The truth is, none of us is perfect. Everyone could use a little help or boost. Have you heard the phrase ‘It takes a village to raise a child’? Well, why does that stop with there? To be successful adults we need help too, sometimes this applies to our health. This can come in a multitude of forms: doctors, nurses, pharmacists, all the way down to farmers and beekeepers. Each one of those people has some impact on our health. Hey, we could add much to the list too but instead, let’s simply examine a couple of areas – food and technology. We know that we are what we eat. The question is, are we doing the best that we can or could be?

Upon our search we discovered something. It wasn’t ONE thing that we needed; there wasn’t a perfect golden egg that solved the illness; it was so much more. Health is about all things that we do, not just ONE thing. In other words, how we feel and how healthy we are is directly related to our lifestyle and the culmination of everything. The result was something new and unique, a company born of the needs of those directly involved. That health is a matter of choice, not a matter of chance.
So much it can be confusing!
There have been many food guides, and references to what and how much we should eat. Even with guides and suggestions, there are still so many who fall to the wayside; even athletes are not immune. The food habits of some athletes during the Olympics would surprise you; the most famous sprinter in the world was quoted that he ate ‘10,000 McDonald's chicken nuggets’ during the two-week span of the Olympics. Why and how is this possible you might ask yourself? Well, athletes (and their coaches) know that true performance comes from more than just diet. In this man’s case, multiple factors came in: sleep, training, tech support, conditioning, and his regular (pre-Olympics eating habits), all of these join to give a comprehensive picture. Eating that much of a single food, for so long isn’t healthy either. It’s easy to ascertain that your body would not thrive with a diet tailored around a specific food. We were designed and created for variety. Just as there is no magic pill, there is no single perfect food that exists to sustain you indefinitely; eventually, deficiencies would inevitably form. Logically we know that only consuming one type of food is detrimental to our overall health and wellbeing. Why then do we not expand and look at the broader picture?

Gaining Knowledge Our learning base as a global community has grown. With that our understanding, that while food is a major player in our well-being, it’s not the only one. Additional components to health include environmental components, stress, emotional health, water, sleep, physical activity and some we may not have factored in yet. Just as the athlete can have cheat meals once in awhile and their overall performance won’t suffer; the same thinking can be applied to our health.

Supplements aren’t new; they’ve been around for awhile, the technology has just evolved to become more current. 200 years ago we sent sailors with limes because it was discovered that they wouldn’t get sick when limes were a regular part of their diet. To them, this was a ‘supplement’ above and beyond their traditional fare of dried meat and bread. Since then, our knowledge about the body and nutrition has expanded and grown at an exponential rate. It wasn’t even until the 1920s that it was discovered that vitamins needed to come from outside foods, as the body couldn’t produce them in large enough quantities. Electric Warmth Ingredients: ► 1 tsp tumeric ► 1/4 Electric C Powder ► grated orange peel & juice to your liking ► 1 cup almond milk ► 1/2 cup full fat canned Coconut Milk or create fresh Coconut Milk from a young Coconut ► 1/2 tsp vanilla extract ► 1 Tbs honey or vegan options: maple syrup or stevia ► pinch of Pristine Sea Salt ► 1/2 tsp of cinnamon Instructions: Combine all ingredients, except honey, orange peal and juice, and Electric C Powder, in a medium hot saucepan and gently warm ingredients while stirring with a spoon to combine. Carefully transfer hot liquid into a blender, tightly seal lid. Add the remaining ingredients. Blend until frothy, Serve hot and immediately drink. Play around until you get the flavour that excites your taste buds. *Tumeric is high in antioxidants, and fights againsts inflammation
Caramel Apple Pie Ingredients Crust: ► 1 cup walnuts ► 1 cup raisins Filling: 5 Apples ► 1/2 cup raisins ► 4 Tbs agave or maple syrup ► 4 Tbs lemons lemon juice ► 1 tsp cinnamon ► 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice Caramel: 4 tbs almond butter ► 2 Tbs agave or maple syrup ► 2 Tbs olive oil ► 4 Tbs water Instructions: Peel and slice the apples into pieces about 1/8 in thick. Ina lidded container, toss the apples and 1/2 cup raisins with the agave or maple syrup, lemon juice, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice until well coated. Spread out on a lined dehydrator sheet and dry for about 2 hours, stirring once or twice. For the crust, process the walnuts and 1 cup raisins in the food processor until it starts to mix together. Press the mix into an 8 inch spring form pan. Then pit in the freezer for a half hour to firm. For the Caramel, blend all the ingredients together until very smooth. Spoon the apple mixture into the chilled pie crust and pour the caramel evenly on top. Let it chill. For extra creamy goodness, serve with a coconut cream.

CLAIMING HER HEALTH - Julie B There was a time in my life I felt powerless and unmotivated, almost as if the whole world was pushing against me. Growing up I was often plagued with: bronchial infections, recurring strep throat, allergies, asthma, food sensitivities and weight gain. These symptoms were severe until I was 13, this is when it was discovered that I had specific food allergies (potatoes, dairy and gluten). If I was diligent and kept these out of my diet all of my other symptoms became manageable. A few years later I was granted an opportunity many young girls dream of; Wilhelmina Models offered me a very generous contract. Off I travelled to NYC, full of gratitude for an offer of this magnitude. The industry has strict requirements and size restrictions the models must meet. I was larger than they wanted; a feeling of unworthiness came over me. Beauty is not something that can be defined by the exterior; it needs to be felt within. Physically and mentally I wasn’t there and decided the contract wasn’t for me. Away from the modeling industry, I still remained in the mindset that physical beauty related to health. Avena’s commitment to quality and purity of our product is at the core of our beliefs. In this area there is no compromise. To that extent, one of our products we will be discontinuing for this very reason. Currently our RP3 SuperBerry is a fantastic blend of antioxidant fruits and berries added into our basic RP3 Natural blend. This ‘berry blend’ as we have it right now is exactly how we like it, unfortunately starting in September we will no longer be able to create this product to our standards.
