A fresh new day is upon us; it’s time to get excited and motivated for all the good things that surround us. There is such abundance that we must move forward with gratitude. The air we breathe is breathable, and we live in a world surrounded by glorious nature. Spring is the best time to do a gentle cleanse; find an area of your life that you’d like to moderate, it can be any area (technology, junk food, TV, social media) and then form a game plan to cleanse and refresh. When it comes to our body, we here at Avena love the idea of a Juice Feast/Fast, when you consume liquids, (the idea is to keep consuming enough calorically; but, instead of using solid foods, incorporating juices and smoothies so you’re not hungry). These, when made right can pack a powerful punch! It gives your digestive system a break. Food is just one avenue of a healthy lifestyle; there is a whole world that shapes us. Now we can modify and supplement our diet and lifestyle with help. Avena’s products can assist in the areas when you need that extra boost. The Herb Cocktail or HC Plus to go in and cleanse the bowel that can become tired, the Superfood to help with the extra greens that are so hard to get in our diets. Good health - now GREAT health is achievable and always within reach, but the fact remains all of us can reach plateaus and stale areas on our path; this is exactly when a cleanse or reset can help ‘reorient’ you on your healthy path. Sometimes we all need to recalibrate and tune back our bodies and our own needs.

Avena Updates: New Prices for 2019 will be changing by May 1st. Contact us today to request a new price list.
Additionally, we have an update on one of our favourite products - The Superfood will be discontinuing this year. Due to production requirements, this product is no longer sustainable. Don’t fear though; we are already in the works of creating a suitable and worthy replacement.
NOTICE - NAME CHANGE Health Canada has recently ruled that the term Cocktail can not be used with any Natural Health Product. As such we have received a ruling that the name of the famous Herb Cocktail has to change. Moving forward you will see the Herb Cocktail called HC, not to be confused with HC Plus. No changes have been made to the formula.
Dear Avena My therapist suggested I get some Magnesium bisgysinate.... (the bisgysinate might not always be on)...Is the liquid magnesium in this form? My problem is I really can’t swallow vitamins or capsules. - Thanks for responding, Cheers. TR
In regards to our Magnesium, I can say that it's not the one that you listed. It's ionic, meaning it's not 'attached' to a protein in the traditional sense.
That said I guess it depends on why that particular magnesium was recommended. If it's to help with bowel movements (some magnesium relaxes the muscle walls of the bowel very quickly) ours doesn't do that.
It's alone and suspended in water as a free magnesium particle. I know that prior to it being detached ours was made from a different protein than Bisgysinate.
Because it's alone, it gets absorbed and assimilated much faster and rarely makes it through the digestive tract to the bowels. Instead, it circulates and gets into the bloodstream quickly to deliver to the external muscles more, and be available to be made into other items inside the body (such as enzymes - over 300 enzymes use magnesium as a component). We do also have a 2nd more concentrated version of our Ionic Magnesium, the upgraded one is called P.I.N. Magnesium. I hope that helps. The PIN has about 4 times more magnesium and is in a small bottle that contains 2 servings. This one seems to be extremely fast working. We like to suggest this for people with large deficiencies or who tend to get significant cramping pains, as this settles them really well.

Enzymes, What are they? What are Enzymes? The technical definition is: “A substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.” What this translates into is these enzymes make things happen. A catalyst is a moving force that gets stuff done. So in the human body if you want anything to be achieved chances are an enzyme is being used for that process. The biggest and most widely recognized area is with digestion. Enzymes will effectively liquefy or break down whole foods so that they can be absorbed and used by the rest of the body. What’s the difference in Enzymes? There is more than one classification of enzymes. In the human body alone there are over 3000 varieties that go about and perform various functions. Each enzyme is born to do a specific task or action. In the cases of some they’re for the breakdown of foods, others may not do that but instead are antioxidants in nature. We also can divide them into two parts: ones that our own body has the ability to create, and those that must come from outside sources (primarily food). What are the Gastric Enzymes? Avena has created a unique blend in our Gastric Enzymes, specially made for those with critical digestive distress. Particularly when it comes to protease; some people can experience intense discomfort when in contact with ‘undiluted’ protease causing a reaction inside their bodies. It’s not that the body doesn’t need protease, just in some cases, it must be approached at a slower rate. (Products with Protease of note: RP3, Enhanced Enzymes, Super Enzymes, Protease Enzymes) What’s the deal with individual enzymes? There is an option now to take a targeted approach to our health. Various enzymes will perform different tasks and roles, and if you know you need more help in those areas you can supplement with specific enzymes to
Spring 2019 Edition| 6
achieve a focused result. Avena has two great multienzyme blends that have formulas that are balanced and well rounded. We know there is power in concentration; because of that, we have four separate types of enzymes you can get on their own to customize and tailor your enzyme therapy to your individual needs. Laser focus on an area can create boosted results. Who needs them? Each and every one of us would be dead or near lifeless without enzymes; they are the catalyst for reactions everywhere. The idea and the balance come from the constant use of enzymes, but as well there is a regular influx of enzymes both from our diet and our bodies creation. Ill-health occurs when the scale starts tipping a little too much to one side or pieces and parts start losing their footprint. Where are enzymes found outside of supplements? The largest source of our enzyme nutrition comes from raw foods. Those foods that are vibrant and teaming with life are quite literally teaming with enzymes. The downside to foods at peak enzyme levels is they don’t last very long. So while fresh food is still your best source industries have found ways to harvest them and remove enzyme activity merely to prolong the shelf life. So, great for those who have produce sitting around for months at a time, and not so great from a ‘health conscious’ standpoint.
What Affects Enzymes? Well, nothing actually ‘kills’ enzymes (they’re not alive) but you can think of their activity as a sliding scale; there will be things that give you higher activity and others that will denature them and make them unusable.
April Sales
When it’s too cold, enzymes work slowly. When the temperature is right (40 deg in the graph to the left) they work as fast as they can. However, if the temperature gets too hot, they’re denatured and can’t work. pH affects enzymes in the same way as the temperature does. As the pH increases, the enzyme will reach its optimum point and function as fast as it can. However as the pH continues to rise, the enzyme will be denatured and unable to work. (Evolving Sciences, 2019)
Temperature: the lower the temp the slower, the activity, with the highest levels of activity between 25-50’C, after that the levels drop dramatically.
Chemicals: certain ingredients and processes have been found to decrease activity (or speed up). The biggest example is certain gasses to ‘prolong’ the shelf life of fresh fruits (preservatives)
Strong Acid/Alkaline: some enzymes are sensitive to pH variances, and either won’t survive in the acidity of the stomach or some of the more alkaline areas of the body.
Exhaustion: essentially every enzyme has its natural amount of uses, they can’t be used and recycled indefinitely once this point is reached. Often exhaustion begins in mineral deficient soils as the plant uses enzymes to try and find and break down the soils for better mineral sources, which can leave the enzymes often exhausted.
7| Spring 2019 Edition
Why and How are Avena’s enzymes different? Avena’s enzymes are custom cultured, plant-based and thoroughly researched. We’ve tailored our blends to have the highest activity possible and matching that with an even distribution of types that are designed to match our regular diets.
Can I take enzymes for anything other than digestion?
By using cultured enzymes, we can gather them at peak activity and maintain that level; the more active the enzymes, the better for us users. The other types of commercial enzymes you can purchase are pancreaticderived (animal sourced) or extracted from plants.
Yes, you can! While this is their primary action, this same process can be used outside of what we classify as digestion although it is using the same principles. If you look at protease and the protein breakdown capabilities it’s easy to see that with food or on food but transferring this role to the bloodstream can manifest as a natural immune booster as most foreign bodies that are harmful are also protein-based, giving protease anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, antitumor abilities.
Usage levels and potency will vary between the cultured and extracted enzymes. Avena feels that the best possible enzymes for supplementation are cultured but you should absolutely be eating fresh fruits and veggies for their enzymes as well.
In the same way, you can look at lipase which deals with fats; in the bloodstream, there’s plenty of cholesterol and other fat-based items that are undesirables circulating around. It’s safe to say that most enzymes if taken only for digesting food is just half of their capabilities.
Do any of your other products have Enzymes, or is it just your enzyme blends?
What is achievable with enzymes?
We do have other products with enzymes, a couple in fact, the biggest one would have to be our RP3. With a food product that’s designed to be a protein supplement, Avena felt that it would be a huge benefit to add enzymes that would assist in the breakdown and delivery of the protein.
There is no limit as to what enzymes can do, but each of our bodies will have their natural limit - things that can happen and things that won’t. What enzymes do is give our system that potential, they’re that catalyst and nudge that will turn things on inside the body. The little workers that when given a task can complete it.
Currently, our Vitamin Supreme also has some enzymes in there, just a smidge, but enough to help with the absorption of the vitamins and minerals in the product to help create a balanced, wholesome supplement.
They won’t change your IQ or make you faster or jump higher, but they can help your recovery, stomach be less bloated, help your immune system and maybe work for grey hairs (catalase is an enzyme that helps reduce grey hairs).

Enzymes: Enhanced & Super - The Sparks of Life Two different formulas - Two different roles When formulating our Enzyme blends, we asked one of the most important questions, “If people are going to use enzymes with meals and without meals, is there a better way of supplementing?” The Answer — ABSOLUTELY! Many enzymes are great for the bloodstream and body (metabolic) but do not offer many advantages in digestive, just like there are enzymes that are great for digesting food but do not provide many benefits outside of digestion.

Enhanced Digestive Enzymes Is focused on breaking down your food, the enzymes, their activity levels and ratios were all chosen for proper digestion, and unlocking nutrients. Super Digestive Enzymes The Super Digestive Enzyme formula is probably the most exciting addition to the Avena lineup. We realized there is a need for an enzyme formulation focused on blood, cleaning and detoxifying what many of us would consider cellular regeneration. Q: How do I take this product? A: Health Canada recommends taking 1 capsule (s) 1 time (s) per day. Take one capsule daily. Take with or immediately before food/meal. Take a few hours before or after taking other medications. How to incorporate both enzymes Avena’s recommendation: Use 3-5 capsules of Enhanced Enzymes with each and every meal to provide superior digestion with your food. Then take 1 capsule of the Super Digestive Enzymes 90 minutes after your meal or 1 hour before your next meal! Many people have found a substantial improvement by increasing their Super Digestive Enzymes to 3-5 caps 2X per day.

Comparing Avena’s Enzymes
If know which enzyme you’re are looking for but not sure which is the best product to use we’ve created for you the chart below. Consider these four separate graphs, each colour represents an enzyme and we are comparing how much of that enzyme is in each of our enzyme products. *This chart represents only four enzymes from our formula’s.
22,000 FCC 4,320 FCC
Cellulase breaks down hard to digest fibre’s.
1,000 FCC 10,000 FCC LU 5,700 FCC LU Lipase breaks down lipids which are your fats.
3,000 FCC LU
20,000 FCC 22,500 FCC Amylase breaks down carbohydrates into sugars.
7500 FCC
120,000 HUT 50,000 HUT 12,500 HUT
Protease breaks down proteins into amino acids.
*Each enzyme is independent of the other enzyme represented on the graph, this graph demonstrates the comparison of a specific enzyme between the three products from Avena. It can not be used to compare amylase levels to protease levels, as these are measured in different units. 1 HUT does not equal 1 FCC.

zyme n E & s l Minera ships n o i t a l e R It’s all well and good to understand that enzymes are necessary, and develop a keen eye for ensuring they’re in your diet. There are little things that we can overlook when it comes to the other nutrients our bodies need.
Minerals You see we’re told to make sure we get Calcium, it’s good for bones, or Iron as it’s great for your blood. But, MAGNESIUM helps with our muscles as well as nerves communications and blood glucose control.
Did you know? That less than 1% of your magnesium levels can be measured in blood serum. Making accurate levels of magnesium in the body hard to gauge.
Ahh, but here’s where it gets interesting because that may not be the BEST thing that Magnesium does inside our system. When you search for the functions of Magnesium, you might see it listed
‘needed for making protein’. Sounds innocent enough until you dive a little bit deeper and find out what kind of proteins.
It’s ENZYMES. MAGNESIUM as a mineral is used as a cofactor in the production and manufacturing of over 300 different types of enzymes in the body (many of which are related to ATP), and we know just how critical the role enzymes have in the body. Now we also have a mineral that contributes directly to new creation. Magnesium is naturally found in our raw foods in nuts, seeds and those beautiful dark leafy green veggies. There is the ability to increase how much we’re getting by adjusting our diets to incorporate more of this into our lifestyle. It doesn’t end there; we also have advanced enough that various supplements can provide Magnesium as well. Our Ionic and PIN formulations are superb and the highest efficiency available. With just a few years ago the University of Missouri Science Centre saying “Water-borne magnesium is absorbed 30% better & much faster than dietary magnesium.” It’s not just magnesium that helps, and ZINC too has been known to factor in on enzyme production also! It’s always amazing to see all how the body ties different pieces together, here is just one way where enzymes and minerals collide. Our body is indeed wonderfully made, and we each have front row seats to witness this action first hand! Let’s use them well.
