Editor s Note Happy New Year everyone! What a year 2009 was! For some of us, the year was a roller coaster ride of emotions, things to do, people to meet, and places to see. For others, another year has passed in SL interacting with the 3D world that people would sometimes have a hard time understanding. Believe me, I’ve tried many times to explain SL to people, and even in my third year inworld, still haven’t found a perfect word to describe it. What is Second Life to you? Have you really figured it out? What makes you log in every time? What are the things you want to see in SL this year? Well, hopefully, we can help you with that as we look into the year together, as each issue passes through your hands, we hope you will find more about Second Life as we give you more features to read and visually appealing pages to pique your imagination and discover another facet in this rich and fast evolving virtual world we live in. We sincerely thank you our dear readers, advertisers, and supporters for continuing to ride with us and for being part of our success. The best is yet to come in 2010!

Cover Story

A Precious Woman DE L I ZIOSA VE N DET TA of Gems & Kisses Interview by Mavi Beck Photography by Natasja Schumann

I

had the great pleasure of sitting down with Deliziosa Vendetta, the creator of Gems & Kisses jewels, in her lovely home to have a chat with her. Deliziosa lives in a very original, tiny, burlesque castle, surrounded by warm-colored objects, all of these revealing the character of a woman ruled by many passions. Deliziosa Vendetta is a delicious woman indeed, very bright, intelligent, motivated and full of talents and interests. I was amazed to discover a true artist behind the pixels. Mavi Beck: Thank you for taking the time to sit with me, Deliziosa. Shall we reveal to AVENUE readers the woman who is behind the pixels of Deliziosa Vendetta? I see you have many interests and you speak so many languages! Deliziosa Vendetta: Deliziosa comes to life thanks to my desire for sharing on Second Life® my artistic experience. In real life, since I was a child, I have lived among artists and doctors. I don’t know whether medicine and art can exist harmoniously together,

but I was influenced by both. I used to love drawing, especially with the pencil, but then I moved on to acrylic and oil painting. For instance, at home we have many paintings by my greatgrandfather, who loved metaphysical painting (metaphysical painting is a very important art current in Italy in the early 20th century; the most important representative is Giorgio De Chirico). So at the age of 7 or 8 I was already drawing metaphysical figures. MB: Not many people are aware of metaphysical painting. It is a very peculiar art form. Maybe we are more used to it because we are Italians, but I am sure many readers will want to find out more. Thank you for mentioning it! But please go on. DV: You are very right. Then I started playing piano and I reached a professional level, my mother is a musician, and I left aside for a while my passion for drawing and painting. I came back to my original passion thanks to some friends, who convinced me to participate in some modern art projects. My attention was drawn especially to the use of different materials, which are uncommon in traditional art, such as metallic wires, PVC, and some projects that included both visual arts and music.

MB: The metallic wire is a constant, as you use them also for your jewels in SL™!

DV: Yes, exactly. On SL I would

others say that a Jew is one who observes the Shabbat.

MB: This sim and this house are lovely, so tiny but full of warmth. Do you live here alone?

love to create also clothes made entirely of jewels, whose parts, touching each other, would produce a metallic sound. But it is not easy; I don’t think it is actually possible at the moment.

Vaher (designer of Violator) and Franco, the manager of Gems & Kisses; we’re really crazy and have lots of fun together.

MB: That would be a great idea,

MB: Gems & Kisses is a brand that

but probably we’ll have to wait a while longer.

DV: Yes, I think heavy scripting work would be required, especially to generate audio files. It would be quite a laggy dress and also would require a long time to create it. In real life similar clothes have been designed by Paco Rabanne; they are jewellery clothes which make a noise when worn. They make a sound along the woman’s silhouette; they are repetitive like Ravel’s Bolero, but you never grow tired of such sound.

MB: Tell me about how many languages do you speak?

DV: English is the language I speak the least. I speak Hebrew because I am Jewish; German and French are due to my studies. Not everybody has the same idea on the definition of being Jewish…many would say that a Jew is one who is born from a Jewish mother, but

DV: No, I live here with Soraya

was born recently but became quickly popular in the metaverse. Before designing jewellery, had you tried other forms of expression here on SL?

DV: In the beginning I loved to terraform islands, like the one we’re on now. After the first month on SL, I already had land on an estate, because I really didn’t like mainland. I started out with a little gallery of my digital paintings, but that lasted a very short time. Then I started creating jewels. Unfortunately I lost the first one; it was a white heart with a tiny diamond. I had a small store, I think it was called Delicious or Dely, that only had this jewel in it. I have also played piano live here in SL, but only for my friends.

MB: When you talk about Gems & Kisses, you often talk in the plural. I know you have a closeknit team who helps you. Who is in your team?

DV: I am the only designer of Gems & Kisses, but I have a right hand who is very stubborn, Franco Bloch. He is a person who I hold dear in both lives. He manages our models team and the Miss Gems & Kisses competition, and he finds new ideas to motivate our models. At the moment we have approximately 27 members in our staff; 20 of them are models. 3 are new models, 1 is a VIP model, and we have a girl who assists us and is very good at translation. We are also very proud of our models… Lorelei Maggs, Keira Soulstar, Wicca Merlin, Blackliquid Tokjoska are just a few of them. Some of them have been with us since the beginning of Gems & Kisses, others were added after; at the moment we have many requests from young models who want to work for us to gain more experience. We have organized a few fashion shows using only our models, but we have to learn a lot still. Some of them are very motivated and think about becoming tomorrow’s new top models. But you know more than me about how difficult it is and how many sacrifices are required to be a top model in SL.

MB: I do know; it took me two years! It was very hard and you need to be very humble.

DV: That is true, as a store we must present our product in the best possible way, therefore we need models who can understand the designers’ needs. That’s what we’re working on, aware that many things can be improved still. We consider the models our performers, just like a pianist who has to execute a piece of music, our models cannot forget the base techniques. Glenn Gould, who was one of the world’s finest pianists, has performed several interpretations of Bach’s Goldberg variations. I like to be like a pianist; I like to interpret my jewellery. Second Life has a great advantage on the real world; you can change the design of a jewel as many times as you like. This is what happened with my Satin line. I elaborated it again and I turned it into Haute Satin, now probably one of Gems & Kisses’ best sellers together with the Mimmi Set. Gems & Kisses can be called an interpretation, as for us dynamism and creativity are the most important things on every level. For instance, we removed all models’ pose stands because we found them sad and too static. For Halloween our models were performing ballet dances or were posing on spider webs; everything is creativity for us. Personal ini-

tiative is highly appreciated as it gives more warmth when welcoming the visitors to our jewellery box (Gems & Kisses’ store is shaped as a jewellery box). Some of our models are really good and creative. In any case, all the modelling sector of Gems & Kisses will be boosted and improved during 2010. Unfortunately, I don’t know many photographers in SL. I am starting to get to know them now; Ludwig Prinz is a dear friend of mine. My favourite sim is Chou Chou, the one with a piano and minimal installations on a white beach. There used to be a sim called Le Reve; it was all purple with artistic sculpture and carvings on the columns. I really loved its underwater area. There was an oyster with a pearl inside; it was simple and precious. Overall I prefer a sim which can represent the creativity of an artist. That is what I hope to create for Gems & Kisses as well.

MB: I can really tell that you live immersed in art, and it is the thing that you are most passionate about. It makes you one very special individual. SL sometimes is a bit superficial; it is so refreshing to meet someone as deep as you are. And the passion you put into Gems & Kisses is tangible.

DV: I cannot call myself a business woman. I never looked at how many Lindens™ I have earned or spent in a day. I want to improve everything little by little. I wish to be able to integrate the store in an island of my own or shared with some other creative designer. I had thought about moving to a homestead, but there is a limit on the avatars allowed, so it’s not the best in case we’d like to organize events.

MB: Other than getting your own sim, what are your future plans for Gems & Kisses?

DV: The main thing will be to improve the modelling sector by motivating them to become dynamic interpreters of my project. Then I’d like to create an area of Gems & Kisses for exclusive artworks, in a limited edition, for the most demanding customers; the goal is to create the best exclusive jewels. I won’t make a Gems & Kisses because as you may have noticed I loved the concept of evolution…my products get better with time. A designer would use the term “restyling”, but I prefer talking about evolution, or progressive creativity.

MB: Thank you, Deliziosa, it has been a real pleasure talking to you! A

itting inside of the huge store waiting for everything and everyone to rezz, I scan the room searching for that name: Babyhoney Bailey. Finally spotting it, I walk closer, fully expecting to find a model in some kind of adorable pink number greeting me with a smile. I couldn’t have been more wrong. As she assertively struts over in her black top hat, all black shirt and pants, with matching black gloves, I look up and I’m greeted with heavy black eyeliner and incredibly dark, full lips. Not what you’d expect from someone named “Babyhoney”. Yet, as I soon found out from our conversation, this was just the first of many shockers. Sensuous Soulstar: Thanks so much for taking time out to sit with me today. Now, let’s get started. First, clear up a little confusion for some of us, what is the name of the store? There are about 3 or 4 different names around here, what’s going on? Babyhoney Bailey: Okay, it's not as complicated as it seems, I promise. Djinn & Tonic is my store. Fear & Clothing belongs to Damon Dollinger. We own this sim together and rather than having two separate stores, it made sense to put it into one house, under one roof. .44 Caliber is a collection of what we do, I suppose.

SS: Alright, now my brain can breathe! So you own the sim with Damon Dollinger; did you all build it together? BB: Damon Dollinger owns Fear & Clothing. Johnnny Blackheart designs for Fear & Clothing, and builds with me under Blackheart & Bailey. We, Johnnny Blackheart and I, built Prosperine this time. We built Glance. Recently we finished Crush Row, which I built solo the first time; it was nice doing it together this time. SS: You’re just full of talent! Let’s talk about your fashion talents for a moment. How did you get your start in fashion? Did you feel something was missing? BB: Oh god no, I was bored. I started doing jewelry because I didn't understand the mesh for clothes. Then I couldn't find things I wanted to wear, so I started with templates and figured out how to line everything up. SS: Was Djinn & Tonic your first attempt at designing? And what was that feedback like when you first started designing? BB: I've gone through a few different rebrandings. I am fickle and creative, and it's not a good combination. I mistook the need to let the brand grow to an audience of ten let alone one hundred or however many. So it was mostly

A model in pink greeting me with a smile I couldn’t h a v e been more wrong

friends coming in. And after that it was mostly me giving things away.

either, but I don't let what other people think dictate what I do.

SS: Djinn & Tonic has an interesting feel to it, like it’s a mix of different influences. Where do you find the inspiration for your designs?

I've got the best friends in the world, this one or otherwise, and if they had something negative to say – then I might be heartbroken. But what I've seen from what people deem the fashion community lately is that people are so caught up in impressing each other, or stabbing each other in the back, that the point can get lost in translation more often than not.

BB: God, that's a tough question. I think it's obvious I'm Gaga inspired, I am completely and 100% in love with her, but I think it's just a love of color. And I won't make anything I wouldn't want to wear in Real Life. I think if anyone tells you they feel completely original in what they do here it's kind of a fib.

SS: You’ve recently added a new skin line here at .44 Caliber: MUA. Whose line is it and what’s the story behind it? BB: It's mine. A male skin line is coming soon by Johnnny Blackheart, who also designs under .44. I'm a freelance makeup artist in real life. I wanted to see if I could do it in SL™, basically.

SS: Being that you’re finally comfortable with the Djinn & Tonic brand, are you now striving to make an impact on the fashion community, or do you even care what they think?

SS: So which was harder to learn and perfect: the clothes or skins?

Djinn & Tonic is the first time I've felt at home in a brand. I'm comfortable with it, enough to let it ride out the mood swings with me, anyway.

BB: Basically, there was a time when I was very caught up in it. To say I'm not now isn't the truth

BB: Skins. It was mostly my execution. I am completely unorganized. It's horrible…terrible…bad. I really overloaded myself. This skin line has 20 skins per makeup. So when you buy one, you get 20.

.44 Caliber is a collection

of what we do

But with a name like Babyhoney what does a person expect re a l ly?

SS: 20 skins per makeup! Why so many? BB: Mhm. You get freckled, non freckled, and 5 different lip options per skin. In real life, I'll wear the same eye all day. A good eye can carry you through, but you have to change out your lip. SS: Spoken by a true makeup artist! BB: Ha! Or an obsessive compulsive one. SS: So I’m curious, how did you get to Second Life®, and what were those first moments like for you? BB: A friend at the time owned a strip club, pulled me from another game and signed me up. But with a name like Babyhoney, what does a person expect really? Those first moments? F***ing hilarious. At the time though it wasn't, it was pretty cool to see what SL was all about. It was definitely sillier. And SL seemed so big; it doesn't very much anymore. SS: Lol, definitely a great answer. Now let’s go back to your building. I know you’re now involved with GIA. How did that come to be? BB: Well, ever since I had anything to do with my own land I've been building. Patty [Cortes of GIA] came to me as a result of

seeing one of the runways I built for another agency. She offered me a salary and asked that I create a new runway once a week for GIA. It's been fun and a good size space to work out some creative energy. She's great to work for because she lets me have creative freedom. Tells me who's there, or what the feel should be, or who's DJing and I go from there. It started when they had their 24 shows in 24 hours event. I had to build 5 runways? And that was right when we finished the sim. SS: What should we expect next from you and .44 Caliber? BB: I've got a ten shadow winter/glitter collection coming in the next few days, but then we're rebuilding and Johnnny's got his male skins coming. So those I think will be the next big release, and I'm super excited to see them. SS: Finally, is there any advice that you would give to up-and-coming/ aspiring/struggling designers trying to make a footprint in the SL fashion community? BB: Oh, I don't know if I'm qualified to give that advice, but if someone asked – I'd say finding your niche is it. Don't try to do what everyone else is doing. Don't be afraid to be different. A

When it comes to clothes and styling, I suppose you could say that black is my trademark. If I am not on the catwalk or doing a fashion shoot, you can spot me wearing lots of black. I also am the one for simple, linear designs. I love sharp, unconventional cuts, which I try to combine with more soft and girly details, like bows, feathers or sequins. So, who says black is boring? The trick is to mix different styles together, or to pull that one black dress that has that little extra that makes it different from all the others. Black is THE color, the one that helps us hide a multitude of imperfections in real life; but also in Second LifeÂŽ, where plastic surgery is not a big problem, it will give you a sleeker and more elongated appearance. You can wear the same black outďŹ t day or night just by accessorizing differently, black is so versatile. My love for this color is endless. Stiletto Moody complete with wings by Material Squirrel. This is the third Boudoir Secrets show that AVENUE has put together, the first being in the winter of 2008. The fall and winter seasons are the perfect time to debut hot designs as the weather gets colder. Today, it was a battle of naughty versus nice. When people first think of lingerie, some may blush but still watch, some may become excited and eagerly watch, and others may be embarrassed and not want to look at all. AVENUE provided guests today with designs that appeal to all levels of interest. Looks scoped from pure white and innocent to colors of black and dark purples, siding a line of erotica. The models today showed guests that lingerie can be for everyone.

There were eight segments displaying each brand of lingerie. The first segment displayed the delicious designs from Angel Dessous by Nando Korobase. The first angels to come out were scantily but elegantly clad in white and taupe lingerie coupled with beautiful and intricate wings by Material Squirrel and hot stiletto heels by Stiletto Moody to represent the good. AVENUE’s naughty angels came out next clothed in sexy lingerie from Angel Dessous in hues of black and red. The last two models sporting white lingerie by Angel Dessous reclaimed goodness for AVENUE’s stage. Madi’s Designs by Madilyn Ling were the next designs featured. AVENUE’s angels wore beautifully designed lingerie, starting subtly with stylish sets of rose, gray, and pearl. These

angels weren’t in pure white, but they were just as delectable in their innocent attire but brandished an edge of sexy. The naughty angels took over this segment by following with hot lingerie in colors of black and white. These angels offered a double side of mischief for viewers by showing both an innocent and naughty side. The following segment featured the flirtatious designs of Magnolia Intimates by Magnolia Mayo. These sets were done in a beautiful crochet and displayed the intricate detail work common at Magnolia Intimates. The colors, powder pink and old rose, worn by the angels emulate the look of innocence while also being seductive. Other enticing angels wore lingerie with mixtures of lace and velvet to tease the senses,

lace to draw your eyes in, and the velvet that is smooth to the touch. These angels were far from innocent, and the next sets viewed moved into more of a look of eroticism while still evoking a look of high couture. With a mixture of lace and nylon, these designs were sure to please. Following Magnolia Intimates were the scrumptious designs of Movin Lingerie by Monyna Sak. Here we had the angels battling the fight of good and evil yet again with sets of white lingerie that conveyed looks of ethereal innocence, while sets of black lingerie

screamed “take me”. The black and white designs were followed by sultry and romantic sets that were both girlie and sexy. AVENUE’s angels wearing lingerie by INSOLENCE, created by Camilla Yosuke, were dressed to kill in colors of wine, purple, amethyst, aquamarine, amber, and ruby. The jewel tones present in this segment paired with the chiffon and nylon materials used in these sets added an extra level of comfort and sexiness. Coupled with the heels provided by Stiletto Moody and the wings by Material Squirrel, these designs

surely dazzled the eyes of onlookers. The angels titillated the senses in lingerie by Paeoti Pomeray, owner of Nymphetamine. With Moulin Rouge styles and rich colors to match, these angels offered a little bit of naughty and nice to compliment both sides. The angels towards the end of the Nymphetamine segment represented the two extremes in outďŹ ts aptly named D i m e n t i a HotBitch,

a black leather body suit, and What Dreams May Come, a delicate bra and thong set. Angels wearing designs by Eternity Brides and Seldom Blue captivated the audience with bridal lingerie sets coupled with shoes by Stiletto Moody and wings by Material Squirrel. These bridal sets had a sweet look but deďŹ nitely had a side of sexy and edgy with colors such as white and lilac. AVENUE angels closed up this segment wearing hot colors of red and black laced lingerie.

Beauty Avatar’s segment graced the stage last but definitely not least. The angels were all naughty wearing newly created skin named Daphne, which was specially created for the show by Aida Ewing. M4ri1yn Magic designed the wings and jewelry and is also behind the idea of the “Angels” line by Beauty Avatar. Although the colors of lingerie consisted mainly of lighter hues, with the accessories such as chains and the dramatic make-up from the Daphne skin line, it was evident that these angels were hot and all sass.

While LeLutka already had our Designer Anya Ohmai of !!OHhmai, a fresh display of attention, Ultra truly made us fall in love. elegant shapes in rich blacks, lace, fearless shoulders and waist cinchers. Next LeLutka Ultra took the stage. Macabre would be a good word for the mood, set with giant horns, Trojan style helmets and cutting shoulders. However, the designs held an elegance and romanticism that held you captive. The tight waist cinchers in silver, red and black were evident in just about all of the outfits, and gave a wonderful feminine feel coupled with a strength when partnered with fierce shoulders and spikes galore. I must admit to feeling a perverse thrill at the nod to a gas mask added to a stunning ensemble in black with full tiered skirts and buttoned waist cincher. The jacket left the chest mainly exposed. I started to feel as if I were watching a lady from Victorian times who’d maybe had too much opium.

The skins and hair were clean and subtle. I particularly loved the sleek, pulled back hair, a combination of prim and skin base. And the chunky, taupe-colored shoes were to die for. Everything shown was splendid. Mix and match possibilities unending were made even more so with the combined efforts of Anya Ohmai’s collection. At the time of this writing, the outfits were not yet in-store. You can set up camp with the rest of us and wait if it’s still not. Just tell yourself it’s a late and very well deserved Christmas present. A

Smooth Designs

With the wealth of designers and agencies in Second Life®, fashion shows are now a common occurrence. Just like in real life, shows are performed for a variety of reasons including such things as introducing new design lines or opening new fashion centers. The clothing displayed on the runway may be anything from the next season’s casual dress to the latest just-for-show haute couture. Designers in Second Life cover all the styles to be found in real life, but also have the opportunity to go beyond the possible. On November 29th, at 3 p.m. SLT, AVENUE Models presented the creations of Aeris Shenlin of Smooth Designs. Known for her elaborate costumes, Aeris demonstrated the extent to which Second Life designers can go to realize their visions. The show began with the models in full avatar creations, complete with flexible prim attachments splayed about with scrolling textures covering the bodies. The first three models in Rainbow, Plasma and Fire avatars walked the intricate choreography on the runway together before yielding it to a pair of models in alien avatars. The show then turned toward the presentation of Smooth Designs costume wear as an Aztec King and Queen took center stage. As the show continued through various eras and realms, both real and imagined, the exuberant crowd was treated to sights such as four colorful birds of paradise parading in unison to fantastical Snow Queens and Dark Empresses. The wide variety of designs took the audience on an amazing journey of possibilities. Each and every outfit was an example of the level of detail and effort that Aeris puts into her creations. Many more fashion shows will come and go in Second Life with many designers showing new and exciting fashion styles of every kind imaginable, but this show demonstrated a fun and different side of Second Life fashion. With the nature of a virtual world being what it is, there are many more opportunities to wear costumes such as these. And when in need of something unique and elaborate, Smooth Designs is certainly a place to look for that special outfit.

. . . W O N D N A THE BUNNIES!

The year 2010 in Second Life® started out with the launch of the first Artificial Intelligent (AI) bunny, after the invasion of the chickens, turtles and other breeder animals. On the 2nd of January, the HunnyBunny brand released their intelligent easter bunnies at the Bunnie’s sim, organised by AVENUE Inc. HunnyBunny was created by Hunny Larimore, Bunny Tremor and Ina Centaur, who together, gave life to those cute creatures willing to “create a childhood fantasy for everyone”, says Hunny. The name came from a fusion of Hunny Larimore and Bunny Tremor friendship who symbolized their bond into the bunnies business.

Ozzie Drucker, the sim owner and the owner of The Farm, feels excited about the new animals: “I think these AI pets are part of the future of SL. She has created a low prim AI product that has minimal effect on physics and that’s why we have sponsored HunnyBunny”. The creation process was inspired on the existing chickens and turtles around the grid and it took almost 6 months to make it. “The reason why it took this long to come out was because SL changed some things in their LSL coding, and we wanted to make sure everything worked with the new standards”, explains Hunny.

The product can be a big success and less a problem to property owners, according to Ozzie, because “it has virtually no collisions, and is well scripted with hardly any impact”, he says. By the middle of the launch, the sim was filled with a huge crowd of people wanting to buy the new released HunnyBunny. We asked a guest, who was about to buy the new bunnies on why she was purchasing them, and she explained: “Well I already do breeding pigs and chickens and have done turtles. So doing bunnies too it’s awesome, and well it’s fun to breed stuff” (Ask Ansaldo). The launch party went from 12PM to 13PM SLT and began with AVENUE s founder Rusch Raymaker spinning some house tunes and dropping hunt clues for the ongoing easter egg’s hunt. The event was also

live painted by Filthy Fluno, a painter from Lowell, MA, who loves to capture live virtual events in his paintings. The BunnyPainty Mixed Reality Painting is an oil painting on a 2x2 ft canvas and became his very first 2010 live art. “I did it because I’m a huge fan of AVENUE and their crew and AVENUE events always bring cool people, music, and talent to their parties”, explains Filthy. The HunnyBunny eggs are now available in store with the possibility to choose the bunny’s colour and there are also different packs that include food (carrots), toys, and egg transporters. But maybe more upcoming objects are being thought because these virtual rabbits landed on the grid and now they promise to stay for a very long time.

I don’t think anyone would question the fact that, indeed, in our world, everyone is beautiful. Why is that? Because each avatar is an expression of the person behind it, and beauty is subjective. I worked with a woman in media once who many thought had an absolutely hideous avatar, but she thought it was stunning! And you know, to her it was, and that’s what mattered at the end of the day. She wasn’t there to impress anyone, or play anyone’s game but her own. But Modeling in virtual worlds is a different beast altogether. It’s not just your game you’re playing anymore. It’s a business. These women you mentioned likely look at you as a product rather than someone celebrating their own individuality, and that’s because they have to. Many factors come into play when you think of models, and the fit always has to be appropriate because these agencies make their money by collaborating with designers for runway shows and print ads, so everything has to be picture perfect. It’s this way in the real world too, except we don’t have the good fortune of simply putting on another shape! Well, that is unless you can afford a butt lift and boob job, but sometimes even that isn’t enough in an industry where looks are a selling point for product. If you want to be a model, alas, you have to play the game! If you want to make it a profession and you’re serious about it, listen to the people who know how it’s done. I know many models with a shape for work and their normal, everyday, self celebrating shape! They’re not trying to hurt your feelings or challenge you fabulous unique look, they’re just doing their job, and you entered their arena willingly! It’s not a personal affront to you, simply the direction they giving you if you want to be successful in your chosen field. It’s fun from what I understand, and can be pretty lucrative! So I say go ahead, get the nose tweak and skin or whatever and wear it when you work, no one will tell you that you have to stay that way once the show is over and the cameras are off. No matter what shape you wear, you’re still you behind the screen, and that’s the truly beautiful thing.

Dear PO’ed, Okay! Reality check time doll. This guy is a singer, likely with lots of fans who adore him and frequent his shows, and you stand by adoringly in the shadows of secrecy tickled that he’s yours, but nobody else knows. He whispers sweet nothings to you in private and then vanishes from your radar for a month at a time without returning IM’s in any platform or emails. He pops to hear you tell him how much you love him, and then he’s gone again. Let me ask you, how is this a relationship for you? We see what the singer is getting from it, but you have nothing except a lot of heartache and frustration. Sometimes, performers can get a bit of an ego, especially when everyone is always telling them how much they love them. Soon that becomes a need rather than a reward, and so sometimes, egotists frequently bait adorers with making them believe they have a personal interest in just them, when actually, and it’s been known to happen, they keep a “friend” in every IM window. It’s narcissim at it’s finest. And it seems like heís pretty aware that no matter how much time goes by, or how obvious it seems to others that he’s people gaming, that you’ll stick around because you have that stereotypical fan syndrom. You love his music, you love his mind. Love yourself enough to expect to be respected. Start by having self respect, sweetie. If he can’t be bothered to even respond to you for a month, then he has no investment in you whatsoever because most people I know wouldn’t even disregard a simple friend in such a manner. Love yourself enough to set him free. I guarantee the minute you stop showering him with attention and making him feel desperately needed he’ll come back begging for it with more poems until he has you back on the hook. Don’t fall for it. I know you’re smart, you have painted an incredibly obvious picture in your letter, open up your eyes now and see it for yourself. You’ll know what to do!

How did your SL experience influence you in your performances?

the attention span is much longer than we had expected. After making the rounds to see how other performers handle the SL issues, and sitting for hours enjoying live performers, I have learned a new way of connecting to an audience. It is, in fact, a very intimate way to connect in a live performance, and I do think that it has affected my RL performances in a good way. The one thing I really miss in SL, though, is being able to see actual faces while I sing...but I rely on the chat comments and try to respond to what is being said.

The first time I performed in SL, I was a newbie. My friend, Trip Potvin, asked me to perform the first show on the Broadway Live Island sim. He helped me get up to speed on movement and wardrobe, etc. so that I could do this performance one week later! We put together a half hour show...partly because we couldn't imagine people having an attention span for this sort of thing. I thought that my avatar had to do movement like I did in RL while I sing, so I had my husband move my avatar like a puppeteer while I performed. Then there was the sound delay issue. I had to get used to the 20 second lag for audience response. We were surprised at the end of our very short program; people wanted more...because, really,

There seems to be a lot of people in SL who enjoy Broadway music. People have gotten pretty excited about my presence in here since I have been on Broadway in a few shows (Les Miserables and Cabaret). I am surprised that there are not more Broadway singers doing this except that it is a technical hurdle for sure. There are plenty of people singing show tunes in SL... but I haven't heard of another RL Broadway singer singing in here. I would love to know if there is and connect. I will be interested to see how this art form takes shape in SL. There are some, like Elvera

he SL music scene has many facets and many genres, from alternative to new Broadway musicals. Tamra Sands (Tamra Hayden in Real Life) brings the feel of being at a Broadway musical to the SL audience with panache and vigor. I had the opportunity to talk with her about the music scene in SL and where the Broadway musical fit in the cornucopia of the metaverse.

How has the inclusion of a Broadway music program benefited the SL community, and where do you see the art form in-world in the coming years?

Lerner, who create sets and costumes and perform bits of shows, which has been very successful. The SL Shakespeare Company has staged scenes of Twelfth Night in SL. Would you like to see a theatre company stage a Broadway musical or play inworld at some time in the near future? It would only be possible to do a show that is in the public domain, like the Shakespeare plays. A new musical or play would be even better, with involvement of the writing team. I know mysty Mellison is working on getting her new musical, The Fire, on its feet in SL. I am interested to know how to coordinate the stream for music with the voice chat for the speaking lines to make it a seamless production. I'm sure it can be done. I see SL as a really nice platform for reading and developing scripts for musicals and plays. However, performing them as a whole is way beyond my technical ability. How does the SL experience blend in with your Real Life performances, and would you like to have more blended reality performances in the future? So far, my SL and RL performances are completely separate. Though, the musician meet up I did in Montreal would count as a simulcast.

Several SL musicians got together in Montreal, headed up by Montian Gilruth, and had a jam with 12 hours of live music! I am hoping to attend a few of the upcoming musician jams: Connecticut May 14-16 (organized by gwampa Lomu), ADMIRE in The Netherlands in July, and Montreal again (TBA). Above and beyond that, the prospect of simulcasting interests me a great deal, and I am currently looking for possibilities that will work well. Stay tuned! What would you tell a performer who is new to SL and wishes to make an impact in the music scene in-world? Get the best equipment you can afford: a good mic, a mixer with a USB, etc...it isn't terribly expensive...so that you sound good. Go to several live performances to see how others are doing things. This will help you see what might work for you and what venues suit your style of music. Then, ask performers like me to help you get up and running. Learn how to send notices and get some sort of group for an easier way to connect to the people who want to hear you. Do a few open mics, if you don't have any connections yet, to get heard, and it should take off from there. In conclusion, where do you see the music scene in SL in a year

from now, and where do you see yourself in that time? The music scene is growing in SL as the awareness grows. The best thing to do is tell your friends about the musicians you are enjoying in SL and invite them to the shows. That will help the performers and the venues greatly! More and more musicians are double streaming and making the possibilities multiply. I can't even fathom what the scene will be like this time next year. Machinima and video casting will deďŹ nitely make this a more interesting platform. For me, I just ďŹ nished a new CD, "I Believe in the Fire", and hope to be out touring with it a bit this year. It will deepen my SL experience if I can actually meet some of my SL followers in RL. I've met a few, and the experiences have been really special.

A

s I closed the interview, I thought that, as SL grows and is accepted as a social medium, soon there will be blended performances on a par with the greatest musicals that have been performed on Broadway in New York and in London. As SL performers are more accepted by the musical community, then a blended performance on Broadway will be all the more possible. A

Club of the Month

dogg lounge Second Life’s Hot Spot for House Music Ž

H

ouse music originated in the early 1980s in Chicago, Illinois and can be described as a soulful form of electronic dance music. It pulls from genres such as disco. When visiting dogglounge in Second Life, it is evident that the owner pulled off this look with a contemporary edge. When visiting the club, it looks as if it belongs in South Beach, California. The waves crash up against the rocks surrounding the club. There is a dance floor right outside the front of the club, one inside, and one on top of the roof of the club. Along the side of the club sits an in-ground pool. When entering the club, there is a small fireplace set up with chairs surrounding it, and a bar is located along the back wall. The club does not have a door but rather an opening that allows the inside and outside spaces to become one. The mood is chill and somber, reflecting the soulful music. The sleek design of the club and the way the outside area mixes nicely with the inside makes this a great place to hang out with friends on a lazy afternoon, sitting around and enjoying great music. In speaking with Sidda Leigh, the owner of dogglounge, I learned that it was created as an exper-

iment in 2004 by Brian “Odogg” Nicholas, who lives in Minnesota. Almost six years later, the club is still a great hit. In February 2009, Brian sold the club to Sidda, but he still stays actively involved in SL™, as he does two live sets a week in-world. Sidda has the same goals that Brian had when he started dogglounge. She wants to “continue the chill atmosphere where people can come and enjoy deep house music in a well-designed space”. hat sets this club apart from others on the grid is that it always has been and always will be about the music. This, along with the club’s patrons, is the driving force that keeps the club going. dogglounge has deejays during the week, and when there is not a live set going, music is always streaming at the club. Sidda realizes that the majority of the deejays who play at the club fall under the genre of “deep and soulful”, but she is always open to mixing things up and having deejays spin from different genres. dogglounge holds events at the club as well; the most recent was a charity event to benefit the American Cancer Society and the fight against brain cancer, but there are also seasonal parties

W

that are held and guest deejays who spin. dogglounge is also represented on the internet through the website www.dogglounge. com. Here, there are podcasts and a live stream going for people to listen to, as well as a blog

and a forum with local discussions (people from Minnesota) and community discussions. hen asked what’s in store for the club and what she sees in the future for dog-

W

glounge, Sidda responded, “I love the vibe. I love the people. I love the music. I don’t plan to change a thing in the future. I learned a long time ago not to mess with perfection.” I believe that this philosophy is what keeps the club

going strong. The guests who visit regularly know what to expect when they visit: a good time with good friends and great music. The club’s modern style, chill music, and fun-loving crowds will keep it going for years to come. A

Miguelina Cazenove represents the rock scene in Second Life®, but she is so much more. A night out with Miguelina is a night guaranteed of auditory new ones. However, DJing is not only the feather on this vivacious woman’s cap, for she dabbles in other pages and get to know SL’s Rock Princess. you logged in and decided to stay? MC: I actually came across SL while watching an episode of CSI: New York, one of my favorite shows. The episode was about Second Life, and that piqued my curiosity. I Googled it, and now here I am! LOL helped me understand this world in pretty much just a few days. I loved the way people interacted here, and within two months I owned land, met loads of friends and even opened a club! (LOL... Doesn’t everyone do IF: How did you start as a DJ? Who taught you and gave you the skills to start? had a dream of creating an SL radio station. We worked on developing it, and before long we were doing live DJ shows on the radio. He thought I had a good personality and voice for it, and with that encouragement I started DJing in SL. IF: What is your style and preference of music to play?

spinning rock tunes, and rock is truly where my heart is. After joining the Studio Red Events family, I branched out into playing house and such. But I actually like to play all types of music; top 40, dance, hip hop, house, pop and of course rock! I guess the only music I really don’t play is country. *giggles* IF: What else to do you besides DJing? Any other skills struggling to get out in the open? MC: Oh yes, I like to venture into a lot of things. Recently I have been doing a bit of building and honing those skills. I also love photography and have my own studio, “Ame Capturee Studios”, and I am a model for Blacklace. Marketing & development is another interest of mine. My brother-in-law, Boe Cortes, and I have worked together on various ad developments, such as the idea for a radio ad from which the idea for a menu driven radio was born. I went to Boe with a vision, and we were able to create an awesome ad, and in turn a great product came out of it! So I would like to further develop those skills as well. *smiles* IF: What makes you enjoy what you do? MC: The people for sure! I love being silly on the mic and making people laugh, enjoying the time we are spending together. It’s so rewarding to see people having fun, as in when they shout “This Tune” or sing along, it’s great! That is like anything I do here, whether it be building or photography, I very much enjoy when a client or a fan is totally diggin’ on anything I create. IF: Apart from being part of Studio Red, where are the other venues MC: I stay pretty busy with Studio Red Events, so I am usually working special events, fashion shows and such through them. I am also available for private parties, weddings, events, etc. I am not currently regularly DJing at any clubs at the moment, but I’m not closed to the idea. A
