The Veronica Beards Two of the freshest faces in fashion, sisters-in-law Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard, are both married to sons of the artist Peter Beard; and together, the two Veronicas have combined their respective backgrounds in fashion and finance to launch one of the city’s hottest brands. Their eponymous fashion line is debuting in all the right places, and beyond the honor they’ve enjoyed as finalists for the CFDA awards, the duo are glamorous and amazing mothers (with eight children between them). They are the ones to watch on the fashion circuit.

letter from the editor
KEITH MAJOR
Dear Readers,
“Miami is definitely having a renaissance moment.”
WELCOME TO OUR Miami issue. Instead of suffering through the throes of winter weather, AVENUE has decided to leave the chilly city behind to drop in on our friends way down south. I’ve always loved visiting Miami for the weekend. The nightlife is always fantastic, but now the daytime has finally caught up. From new openings in the Miami Design District, to amazing places to shop and eat, Miami is definitely having a renaissance moment. As Haley Friedlich discovers interviewing Ian Schrager about his new hotel and residential venture, the EDITION, to Michael Gross’s story of the reinvention of the Saxony, there are so many great places to stay. When we learned that Dylan Lauren opened an eponymous store in Miami, we knew that it was the perfect moment to ask her to be on our cover. Dylan Lauren is one of those people who makes it all look easy. Willowy and tousled-haired, she navigated her way around our shoot being extremely polite to everyone she came in contact with. If I were to use one adjective to describe Dylan, it would be gracious. I imagine that everyone who has worked directly with her at Dylan’s Candy Bar would want to emphasize her courtesy, both professional and personal. It can’t be easy being the daughter of one of the most successful men in the retail world today. But Dylan has navigated her way through the rocky shoals of being an heir to one of the greatest fortunes in fashion, as well as founding and growing her own company to such a degree that it makes you wonder if there really is a “retail” gene in her family. Determined to make her own way while still lending an ear to her father’s instruction, Dylan has had the best of both worlds: a skilled mentor to guide her and the wiggle room to grow her brand at the pace that suits her company best. Town News I
love getting happy New Year cards, as late as possible. It takes the heat off us late Christmas card senders and spreads the cheer, well into 2014. And January and February in New York City need all the cheer they can get. So it was that Anne Hearst McInerney, Jay McInerney and George Farias’s annual holiday fete was, yes, a celebration of the season, but also a kickoff to all the things this exceedingly busy group has planned for 2014. Pity the poor partygoer who did not have a painting, book or empire building in the works. And, yes, there is some self-pity here. Donna Tartt, the toast of the literary world because of her new book The Goldfinch, postponed her return to Virginia to attend, and stayed late with her partner, Neal Guma. Daniel Boulud will of course be enticing our palates this year, but more importantly shared the news that he and his wife Katherine will be welcoming a new baby in the New Year. Richard Johnson and his wife Sessa told me they were happy to be back in New York, and love their new apartment in the old FBI building on the Upper East Side. I told him to look in the cubbyholes for old files and new scoops. Will Cotton and Rose Dergan were also there, and slipped the news to Amanda Hearst that his portrait of her would be her (not) surprise Christmas gift. David Salle and Hunt Slonem rounded out the artists’ circle. Robert Zimmerman sported a black eye that he said Capitol Hillers assumed was from a Republican and New Yorkers assumed was from plastic surgery. Neither was true, though Rudy and Judith Giuliani, also there, might’ve thought the former, and not disapproved. Cynthia McFadden seemed to be digging up the most fascinating stories, hopefully not about anyone present (unless it was to be a tribute), and Emily Rafferty 24 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • FEBRUARY 2014

modestly accepted praise for the Met’s banner year and for the Jewels by JAR exhibit that had us all green with emerald envy (and other colors). Jay was happy to meet Kelly Rutherford, finally. Though he had had a few appearances on Gossip Girl, their roles and paths never crossed. Glenn Horowitz and Tracey Jackson were there with Paul Williams, with whom Tracey is co-authoring a book. Susan Stroman, fresh off the heels of Big Fish, described how she is now preparing to direct and choreograph Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway on, yes, Broadway. Roger Waters and Laurie Durning were catching their breath after his last, and last, record-breaking tour. Expect his opera to make its way from London here. In the edibles category, Elisabeth de Kergorlay made our mouths water and Gallic hearts ping as she described her new line of gourmet frozen food (think Picard), coming to the UES early this year. Binky Urban and Ken Auletta were there and indicated that they will give us much to read and discuss in the New Year. Pierre D’Arenburg (cuz, to me, Prince to you) arrived after a performance of The Magic Flute at the Met. Taki Theodoracopulos left early to prepare for his bacchanal at The Waverly the next night. John Demsey and his daughter Marie-Helene said they will be adopting two baby bulldogs to join their three cats. Now there’s a holiday card in the making. And Victoria Amory will tempt us with more yummy condiments, including piri piri sauces. Most exciting, Jay will publish his newest novel, continuing the story of Russell and Corrine Calloway, from Brightness Falls through The Good Life. It’s nice to have so many friends whose great accomplishments I can enjoy while popping bonbons on my chaise. ✦

The Faena team has collected vintage images of the landmark Saxony Hotel. Below: The ocean-side swimming pool.
Miami Modern with a Latin Twist
The Saxony, the first luxury hotel on Miami Beach, is being reborn as its latest—and is already attracting New York’s financial and cultural elite. The more things change, the more they stay the same
W
ith contracts signed by a cast of condo buyers said to include Lloyd Blankfein, Leon Black and Larry Gagosian, the Faena Miami Beach has arrived—even if it’s yet to open. The six-block development between Collins Avenue and Indian Creek will eventually include an 18-story apartment house designed by Foster + Partners and an arts center, shopping, marina and parking, all designed by Rem Koolhaas/OMA. Three pre-existing structures will be incorporated into the complex. One of them, The Saxony, is a landmark hotel being re-designed by the filmmakers Baz Luhrmann and costume and set designer Catherine Martin, his wife and partner. It’s being re-christened the “Faena Saxony Hotel” by project partners Alan Faena, a former Argentine garmento, and Len Blavatnik, the Soviet Union-born, Harvard-educated financier and philanthropist. The group’s intention: to anchor the complex firmly in the resort’s glamorous history. Their creation “will change Miami Beach forever,” vows Faena, with “the vision and the quality and the level and the size of the project and the minds behind it and their way of thinking—mixing music, culture and the arts to create a unique place in the world.” 36 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • FEBRUARY 2014
The reborn hotel (which will include two floors of luxe apartments) is also a powerful reminder of the resort’s glory days. Its namesake, Chicagoan George Sax, got his start manufacturing punchboards, which were the semi-legal, early 20th century equivalent of today’s lottery and a big source of income for that city’s famous mob. Sax then invented drive-through banking and just after World War II, built the Saxony. Designed by Roy France, another relocated Chicagoan and architect of dozens of Miami hotels, the Saxony was an instant Miami Modern landmark and the progenitor of such later and nowbetter-known hostelries as the Fontainebleau, Eden Roc and Doral. The 246-room Saxony was built in nine breakneck months, at a cost of $5.5 million, and opened in June 1949, boasting what was then a novelty for Miami: air conditioning. Other prominent features were a swimming pool, installed on the hotel’s 600 feet of ocean frontage, as well as a palm garden and what were billed as “Hollywood-style” bathrooms with disappearing toothbrush holders. The best rooms, which had curving Art Deco terraces, could be had for $50 a night. A publicity hound and inveterate innovator, Sax, who occupied a triplex penthouse, kept upping his game. In 1950, when live shows in beach hotels were legalized, he boasted that only his had three bands

MIAMI’S SIX-SQUARE-BLOCK FAENA SAXONY COMPLEX WILL INCLUDE NEW BUILDINGS DESIGNED BY FOSTER + PARTNERS AND REM KOOLHAAS. THE LANDMARK SAXONY HOTEL, THOUGH RE-DESIGNED BY THE MARRIED FILMMAKERS BAZ LUHRMANN AND CATHERINE MARTIN, WILL STILL BE A POWERFUL REMINDER OF THE RESORT’S GLORY DAYS. playing simultaneously. Sax also installed the first hotel stock ticker and brokerage office on the beach, and expanded by adding 100 seats to his Ye Noshery coffee shop and by doubling the size of the Shell-iMar supper club. Scandal brushed the Saxony in 1951 when a congressional investigation into a federal loan-making corporation revealed that that company had financed the hotel, and that it returned the favor with free rooms and jobs for politicians, including an aide to President Harry Truman. In 1956, Sax added 100 more rooms and yet another nightclub, this one served by an all-glass elevator ascending the hotel’s exterior. The investigation did hurt The Saxony, but inevitably, it was eclipsed. In 1958, it offered only a Geisha Girl Revue with “16 (count ’em) 16 pulse-pounding Poor Butterflies,” while just up Collins Avenue, Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Durante were playing the Fontainbleau. A year later, Sax sold the place for $6 million, only to buy it back after it went bankrupt, for $4.575 million. What to do next? he must have wondered. Expand, refurbish, and open again with a bigger pool, a shopping arcade, and a Polynesian area he named Oolooloo complete with a luau pit. It was staffed by 100 saronged girls, of course. In 1961, Morris Lansburgh, a distiller’s son who’d bought up a batch of beach hotels, added the Saxony to his holdings, and then created a Cavalcade of Stars, an all-star review open only to guests at his many hotels and held at one of them, the Deauville. Performers ran the gamut from Sophie Tucker and Liberace to Dick Gregory and Allan “My Son the Folksinger” Sherman. In 1968, the entertainment included Diana Ross and Sonny and Cher. Four years later, though, when delegates to the Republican National Convention were in residence, protestors upstaged the pop stars. By then, the Saxony had fallen far from luxury, and in 1974, Lansburgh sold it to a group running strictly kosher hotels for observant Jews, adding efficiency units for long-term residents. 38 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • FEBRUARY 2014
A quarter century later, Miami Beach had been reinvented and rediscovered, but its “shtetl by the sea,” as the New York Times called it, had shriveled; the Saxony was the last kosher resort standing when it celebrated its last seder and was sold for $64 million to a pair of developers from Texas and Tampa, who’d borrowed that and $5 million more, at 16 percent interest. In 2006, those developers sold a majority interest to Ugo Colombo, a Milanese investor; Flavio Briatore, the Italian businessman and Formula 1 team manager who fathered one of Heidi Klum’s babies; and their friends, the Cipriani family. With great fanfare that group announced plans to open Cipriani Ocean Resort and Club Residences, a hotel and condo. Two years later, Len Blavatnick gave that group a $172 million construction finance loan. But the project floundered and in 2010, Blavatnik took over as co-developer. “The market cratered, financing dried up and we made a decision,” says one of the original developers, Ron Weisser. “Len said, ‘I’ll take you guys out and wait.’ He had more patience than we had.” Blavatnik also had the funds to buy several more parcels, including the adjacent Atlantic and Versailles hotels, greatly enlarging the project’s footprint. Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, who are also among the current developers, vow to respect both the past—of Miami Beach and the hotel’s high Deco style—and the modern vision of Blavatnik and Faena (whose first project, Faena Buenos Aires, was designed by Philippe Starck) as they create the 21st century Saxony. “If we were to slavishly recreate the interiors,” Martin says, “we wouldn’t be doing justice to Faena,” whose style, she says, is to “keep you enthralled. Instead, says Martin, the group is taking cues from the original architecture, and seeking a design that’s “neither vintage nor brand new, but authentic and amusing, not a literal translation.” So . . . goodbye Oolooloo area. Hello, Tango cabaret and Argentine barbeque. Everything old is new again. ✦

Dylan Lauren, the creator of Dylan’s Candy Bar and daughter of retail titan Ralph Lauren, isn’t sure exactly how many times each day she says the word “candy.” “It’s like someone else’s version of ‘um,’ ” she says with a laugh, over coffee on a chilly winter morning. “I’m like, ‘candy.’ ” By now, it’s common knowledge that sugar runs through Lauren’s veins—and has made her a tremendous success. The original flagship location of her eponymous Upper East Side candy store-cum-art gallery-cum-cocktail lounge, Dylan’s Candy Bar, is now, at 15,000 square feet, the largest candy store in the world. Not only does the business stock over seven thousand different kinds of candy, it employs over 250 people. Lauren has also opened three additional locations—on fashionable Lincoln Road in South Beach, Miami, as well as in Los Angeles and East Hampton—and made plans to further expand internationally in the coming years. She’s as closely associated with candy as her father, Ralph Lauren, is with polo ponies. Her mother, Ricky, is similarly creative, and an author, photographer and artist in her own right. “My parents were never like, ‘No candy for you,’” Lauren says with a smile. “My mom had a sweet tooth, and still does, although she’s a little more of a chocolate person.” (This, as it turns out, is a useful distinction. In Lauren’s purview, candy preference says a lot about a person: she’s a gummy gal, herself.) What might not be immediately apparent to those who don’t know Lauren is that the draw of candy, for her, isn’t solely or even primarily based in its taste. Rather, Lauren loves the whole gestalt of candy, because, she says, it relies on the four other senses as much as the obvious one of taste. As she told Vogue’s André Leon Talley, she wants to create her own “Disneyland of candy.” It’s that kind of big-picture thinking that has set Dylan’s Candy Bar apart from any other store of its kind. Lauren is resolute in her commitment to create a start-to-finish experience for her customers that reflects her own vision. “Every fixture and image in Dylan’s stores is deeply rooted in her vision: fusing her love of candy and colors with her passions for art, culture and fashion,” says Nicole Levinson, a close friend since she and Lauren were in high school. “To be in Dylan’s Candy Bar is to see and be a part of a visual story about Dylan’s personal life. “Everything in Dylan’s stores has a purpose and a deep meaning.” Though Lauren sometimes refers to herself as an entrepreneur, she more often describes herself as a creative type for whom the aesthetic aspects of her job are what thrills her most: “I love what I do because it doesn’t feel like work,” she says, waxing poetic about trade shows, her designs for the handbags in her LeSportsac collaboration, her meetings with architects to discuss layouts for future stores. “I eat candy, I look at candy, I shop for candy. Everything about that is what I’d be doing anyway. “I am totally my [own] customer,” she adds. “I love that it allows me to be creative, because I feel like I am an artist.” Those who know Lauren best recognize her as a true original. “Dylan’s world is not influenced by her peers or colleagues,” Levinson says. “Dylan loves bright colors, candy, Willy Wonka, wombats and bunnies, and does not care about how cool or uncool her passions are. That is pretty freaking cool.” Growing up, Lauren explains, she collected candy—and, sometimes didn’t even eat it, preferring to admire the packaging and display it in her room. “I had literally shelves and shelves of product from around the world that I just think is beautiful stuff,” she says. “I’ve always loved the Charleston Chew bars’ bright, bold graphics, or Bazooka’s red, white and blue.” She made mosaic tables out of gumballs and Nerds; she découpaged picture frames with candy wrappers and gave them as gifts to friends. The interior of the Candy Bar on Third Avenue is a triumph in visual merchandising—a kaleidoscope of color, meticulously arranged, endlessly stimulating without becoming overwhelming. It’s also a testament to Lauren’s eye for presentation. And she’s not done yet, but instead is constantly, instinctively, on the lookout. Midway through our interview, Lauren excuses herself for a moment. “I have to take a picture of this guy’s shoes!” she exclaims. “This is so random—my husband has been looking for a pair of shoes, and that guy’s wearing them!” She jumps up and maneuvers her way through the busy morning coffee line, snapping the desired photo while exuding the kind of easy, effortless charm that makes it impossible for the shoe guy she’s stalking to object. Most people, at 8:30 on a weekday morning, don’t have the wherewithal
“DYLAN’S STORES [ARE] DEEPLY ROOTED IN HER VISION: FUSING HER LOVE OF CANDY AND COLORS WITH HER PASSIONS FOR ART, CULTURE AND FASHION. TO BE IN DYLAN’S CANDY BAR IS TO SEE AND BE A PART OF A VISUAL STORY ABOUT DYLAN’S PERSONAL LIFE,” SAYS CLOSE FRIEND NICOLE LEVINSON.

to pay much attention to their own shoes, let alone a pair, worn by a stranger, that happens to be just what a husband needs. But Dylan Lauren isn’t most people; her font of energy is boundless and fantastic to witness. And she confesses that her second-greatest fear, after violence, is lethargy. “If I’m tired, I get scared,” she says. “Like, ‘What’s wrong?’” Her physical self figures in, in another way: It seems like some kind of Faustian bargain that a woman who eats, sleeps, and breathes candy could pass for a spinning instructor. But in fact fitness is nearly as important to Lauren as candy is. On the morning we meet, she describes the workout she’ll be skipping off to afterwards as “an aerobic boot camp-meets-weight-training kind of thing. ”There’s a track with sleds and ropes,” she says of her assemblage of exercise elements the average gymgoer would frankly find terrifying. She has trained as a water-aerobics instructor and studied nutrition; and her diet—besides the inevitable candy breaks—is enviably healthy, with a strong emphasis on produce and lean protein. “And then I actually may do the stairmill later . . .” she adds casually, together with the kicker . . .“on which I’m on my BlackBerry, doing work.” Such multi-tasking is nothing new; it’s how she wrote her first book, Unwrap Your Sweet Life. That kind of focused determination came early for Lauren, who still counts her scholar-athlete status at Dalton (where she captained the tennis and volleyball teams and was class president three of four years) as one of her proudest achievements. Though she’s quick to qualify that her parents never put undue pressure on her to succeed, Lauren saw their own success—professional and artistic—as an inspiration to her even at a young age. “I think seeing that it’s possible to run your own business and execute your own creative vision was something that I was brought up with,” she says. “And everyone being an artist, having their own voice—no one was a doctor. I liked growing up with a father who had an office filled with color and textures and patterns, [being] surrounded by that.” Early on, Lauren’s parents saw that their daughter was destined for a life as imaginative as their own. “In terms of traits, Dylan’s creativity and artistic sensitivities have always been a huge part of who she is,” says her mother, Ricky. “As an adult, they have been essential to the success of her professional life.” That sense of creative inspiration—at this point, a mutual one—continues to inform the way Dylan, Ralph, Ricky, and Dylan’s two brothers relate. At family dinners, she explains, “It’s a lot of, ‘You should do this, why didn’t you think of this?’ [Dinners] feel like think tanks. If my uncle’s at the table, who’s in my dad’s business, he’s like, ‘Did you see the train show? Why don’t you do chocolate trains, going around?’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, my God, I should do that! How do I do that?’ “Literally, that might be next year’s theme. Then we’re like, ‘Dad, why don’t you do jeans that have this on the sides?’ Or my mom did a cookbook, it’s like, ‘Why wasn’t that in your cookbook?’ It’s very ideas and vision—aah!” Though her parents’ advice to “follow your gut; love what you’re doing, or else you won’t do well” was invaluable, Lauren was never much interested in inheriting her father’s business. “I feel like he has his own thing going. As much as I like the idea of fashion and design, my passion is really candy! It’s not clothing, it’s the color of clothing.” Still, she’ll happily acknowledge the influence her upbringing has had on her business. “Growing up in the fashion industry, and in New York City, my target is a person who loves fashion and clothing and who’s style-conscious. So they want a beautiful gift to give to someone, or they want to feel proud buying into a brand,” After Dalton, Lauren graduated from Duke. (“I have dreams, though, that I didn’t! I hate that!”) She was an art history major, she says, who found that the best thing about college was the time she spent away from it, studying abroad in London and Rome. The time away suited her: Like her parents, she wanted to be a leader in some capacity, rather than work her way up at someone else’s gallery or museum. At first, she aimed to open a gallery-lounge hybrid that could showcase new and emerging artists. “I spent a year going to nightclubs—really!” she says, laughing. But she wasn’t the stereotypical hard-partying heiress; her purpose in going out was “to look at the light fixtures and the

wallpaper. I wanted a nightclub that had interesting furniture.” While pursuing a space for her club, she found that people kept asking her to help plan events in their own spaces—so many, in fact, that she started a business, Dylan’s Creative Events, to coordinate charity events and celebrations, including the launch of HBO’s Sex and the City. Soon enough, however, she noticed a pattern. “It kept coming back to candy, whether I was decorating the nightclub with candy, or the invitation, or the goody bag or the party favor,” she remembers. “It was just weird, and I got a little frustrated with the idea of living within the confines of a budget in an event space that I couldn’t decorate to be everything I wanted for my own space.” So she shifted and refined her focus; she would open a candy-centric gallery. Moreover, the gallery would showcase “the packaging I had collected and other people collected, and the pop art,” she says. “Whether it was what Jeff Koons does, or Andy Warhol, those pop artists make a lot of candy art that I kept seeing. And it sort of evolved into, ‘Do you know what? I love candy, I should just have it all in the store, just to help support the art.’ Which is very backwards!” She’d had her eye on a space on East 60th and Third Avenue for some time, and when the Sam Goody music store that had been there closed, she made her move—not without facing a little skepticism. “I took on big real estate; I started with 10,000 square feet,” she explains. “So it’s people [saying things] like, ‘Are you crazy? How are you going to sell gum balls and pay the rent?’ ” The business of Dylan’s Candy Bar, though, is so much more than gum balls. The shop is to a typical candy store what Disney World is to a county fair. (And at $13.99 a pound for bulk candy, a day there can get just as expensive.) By now, people know the store well. “Upstairs, we have these cupcake booths, where we have our vendor meetings,” Dylan says. “There’s always an excuse to go: We just launched doughnuts, and everyone’s like, ‘Let’s meet in the store!’ ” The store did face its share of challenges, one being plans were for it to open the week of September 11th, but Lauren ended up pushing the date back to December. Ever the optimist, Dylan believed the store would offer New Yorkers an escape when they needed it most. Clearly one of the things that delights Lauren most about her business is everything she’s able to do with it above and beyond selling gum balls. “We’re at Fashion Week; we did candy gowns for Project Runway; for Election Day we had mosaics made out of jelly beans of all the past presidents,” she says. “For Art Basel, in Miami, we have an artist doing gingerbread houses of major museums; he did a gingerbread house for MoMA and the Guggenheim.” She mentions, also, collaborations ranging from one with long-defunct brand Bonomo’s Turkish Taffy (an old favorite of her mother, which relaunched with the Candy Bar), to Hello Kitty, to The Wizard of Oz (1939) and the novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) in celebration of their respective anniversaries this year. She’s particularly excited about the latter two works, both of which are longtime influences. “The Wizard of Oz—that movie inspired my store,” Lauren says. “It’s pretty amazing to be able to be like, ‘Oh, why don’t we do a yellow brick road chocolate bar? Or a ruby slipper rhinestone purse?’ ” But she’s got more on her mind than just imagining new kinds of candy. Lately, she’s been traveling a lot; besides the flagship store, she puts in face time at her three franchise locations, and particularly loves visiting the one in Miami: “It’s work, all day, but then at the end of the day, to know I can walk along the water and just digest…” The Florida shop, which opened a year ago at 801 Lincoln Road in a former Ghirardelli storefront, posed a new and exciting challenge: It’s the first to include a 70-seat outdoor café, with full food service, in addition to the full indoor bar and Chihuly-inspired lollipop-tree design centerpiece. Lauren is also staking out possible new Candy Bar outposts—nationally, San Francisco and Chicago are top prospects; and globally, possible locations include London, Japan, and Canada. “I’m hopping on planes left and right,” she says, but still finding time to enjoy the new Upper East Side apartment she’s recently moved into with Paul Arrouet, her husband of two-and–a-half years. He definitely knew his bride: He proposed, in Montauk, with pink roses—and Hershey’s Kisses. Lauren and Arrouet have talked about children, and about opening an animal shelter (Lauren is a passionate animal activist) together someday. But for now, this “Candy Queen” is still focused on her immediate dominion. “I want to build, one day, an even larger store that may have a theme park or something in it,” she says. She counts Walt Disney among her idols, as well as her parents, Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey. In other words—her words—people “who have developed an empire.” ✦
“THE WIZARD OF OZ—THAT MOVIE INSPIRED MY STORE,” LAUREN SAYS. “IT’S PRETTY AMAZING TO BE ABLE TO BE LIKE, ‘OH, WHY DON’T WE DO A YELLOW BRICK ROAD CHOCOLATE BAR? OR A RUBY SLIPPER RHINESTONE PURSE?’”

Back Down South
Ian Schrager, the mastermind behind the Delano and the Shore Club, returns to Miami with the EDITION Hotel & Residences—an ultra-high-end, barefoot-chic, MiamiBeach cheese-resistant oasis aimed for the increasingly cultural “New Miami” by Haley Friedlich

an Schrager’s Midas touch in the hospitality business is not up for debate. His intuitive grasp for popular culture and his bold demeanor have made him both an innovator and an authority in the field. His credits include opening the most sensational nightclub of all time, with Studio 54; fathering the boutique/lifestyle hotel, with the Morgans Hotel; and the urban resort with the Delano. He mastered the upscale residence, with 50 Gramercy Park North, and has pumped out notable projects like the Royalton, Paramount, Mondrian and Gramercy Park hotels and the the Herzog & de Meuron designed 40 Bond Street. He’s recently added two new hotel brands to his portfolio: PUBLIC—his own private brand, and EDITION: a joint global venture with Marriott International. We caught up with Schrager to talk about all things Studio 54, area code 305 and beyond.
JESSICA NASH
How did you go from practicing law to opening Studio 54 in 1977? I was Steve Rubell’s [Schrager’s late business partner] lawyer at the time. Steve kept saying to me, “Why would you want to be an advisor? Why wouldn’t you want to be a principal?” And around that time, nightclubs were taking over. When you used to be driving around at night, you’d see people waiting on line, basically getting abused while trying to get inside; and I thought that was a business that I wanted to be in. So I left the law practice and went into business with Steve and we opened up Studio 54. What did it feel like to have created such a cultural phenomenon with Studio 54? It was like holding onto a lightning bolt. Steve and I were two kids from Brooklyn and we didn’t really have any money and didn’t really know what we were doing, but all the forces of the universe came together at the right time in the right place. It exploded and we did something unique—like Woodstock. It was just like this phenomenon that happened. The sexual revolution was spreading its wings and there wasn’t anything you couldn’t do at night that you couldn’t get up the next day and walk away from.
“

THERE WASN’T ANYTHING YOU COULDN’T DO AT NIGHT THAT YOU COULDN’T GET UP THE NEXT DAY AND WALK AWAY FROM.
”
What was your next venture? When we sold Studio 54, we sold it to a person who took out a lot of promissory notes, and when the person couldn’t pay his promissory notes, we traded those notes for an interest in a hotel—that’s how we got into the hotel business. It was happenstance. You’re credited with creating the concept for the boutique/lifestyle hotel—how did you recognize a need for that? When we did a nightclub, we weren’t trying to do the best nightclub in the world; we were trying to do the best nightclub we could do. The same was true with hotels. The Morgans Hotel was our first, and that really changed everything. We broke every rule in the book—we didn’t follow any structure or conventional wisdom, and I think it showed everybody what a hotel could be . . . it didn’t have to be formulaic or generic, and you really could do something [different] and people would respond. Why do you think the boutique hotel model resonates with people? I think in the same way that Steve Jobs saw that by taking a 52 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • FEBRUARY 2014
personal computer and re-imagining it as a unique product that makes an emotional connection [with the consumer]: These hotels are an experience. It’s fun and it lifts your spirits. For some reason the [traditional] hotel industry didn’t realize that; [so] we just thought, “Hey! Why not do a hotel that’s really fun to stay at, and you feel special when you’re in it?” And then residential developments followed? It’s funny: Residential is a logical progression for me. We started out with nightclubs (not so civilized), then hotels (more civilized), then residential (even more civilized!). With hotels the real work starts once you’re done building. With residential, once you’ve finished building it; you’re done. It’s all business. [No matter the project] my goal is always to do something visually arresting, as long as it’s not contrived and gratuitous. I feel that you can go in there with some originality and creativity and do something special.
I know you have the Miami EDITION—residences and hotel—opening next fall, so before we get into the details of that, can you tell us about your history in Miami, starting with the Delano? I’ve always loved Miami for kind of the obvious reason: It was the cheapest beachfront property in the world; it was within close proximity for millions of people; there was a multiplicity of flights. But with the advent of the airplane and the popularity of air travel, people started to fly over Miami and go to the Caribbean, and so it was declining. When we went to do the Delano on 17th Street, it was like Lebanon . . . although Lebanon is not too bad now! But it was terrible. What year was this? 1990. I just felt that [it would work] if you did a self-contained urban destination resort in the middle of the city, which had options at nighttime. The idea came to me from going to St. Barts, because you can go there and lie on the beach and have fun and be in a tropical paradise, but you have the option, if you want, to go out at night and to go to all the restaurants. I thought Miami could also offer that. It was out of favor at the time, which is always interesting to me, and it was a contrarian bet; we bought the hotel for $3 million. It just took off! And the Shore Club is yours now too? We took over the Shore Club—it had fallen in a bad way and we took it over and turned it
around. We couldn’t spend a lot of money on it; all we were able to do was put on some paint and style it and try to re-invigorate the public space. We did an outdoor nightclub and it became a fun place. We turned it around from a hotel that was losing money to one that became very, very profitable. So, the EDITION will be next? The EDITION is the next step . . . you know, with my “hotels to residential” philosophy. It’s a much more sophisticated physical site; when we did the Delano and the Shore Club, we were challenged to work within limited physical sites. The Delano was in a very narrow long place—nobody believed that we’d be able to turn that into something sexy; the Shore Club didn’t have a focal point: It was three buildings kind of joined together. The EDITION is on four acres, it’s like a little enclave right in the middle of the city, and because it’s surrounded by so many condominiums, I think it’s protected from that “cheesy factor” that’s often unavoidable in Miami Beach. Miami has always been a boom ‘n’ bust town, and a victim of its own success. I think that with the EDITION being insulated, we will really get to build the next generation—pick up where we left off at the Delano. What will be special about it? Everything. [For the hotel component] the rooms are really great and comfortable and they feel tropical, so it’s kind of barefoot chic. The public space is dynamic: lots of different venues for people to entertain themselves and for people to work. It’s planted very beautifully and we’ve been inspired by the Tropicana Nightclub in Cuba in the ’50s; like, naked girls coming out of trees and things like that. There’s an outdoor movie theater; an ice skating rink, but an ice rink that could be by Cirque du Soleil or somebody on acid or something. There’s a bowling alley, the same thing; a bar; and a really great nightclub with special lighting effects and a few restaurants by Jean-Georges [Vongerichten]. Everything we started at the Delano and has evolved over the last several years, it’s all culminated in the EDITION. No effort was spared to do something really, really special—we’re trying to do the most special hotel down there; or else why bother? And then there will be a residential component? We have 26 units, and they’re different from the rest of the apartments in Miami. We didn’t build the conventional-typical Miami apartment, you know? We built a tropical apartment; it feels beachy. It’s new Miami. I don’t know whether Art Basel brought it in or all the great architecture; I don’t know whether it’s the new performing arts center, the museums . . . it’s just different. It’s really a world-class capital now so we did a world-class residence. Sales have been . . . ? Great. Broken all records. They commanded a high price because of the level of sophistication and the sales velocity, and it’s a heartwarming thing to put everything into it—to make a really great effort—to do something really special and for the people to respond and for it to be successful. Marriott has identified various global markets for EDITION hotels to be opened in by 2017— Istanbul, China, India, Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, etc. It seems like you tailor all of your projects to reflect
their host cities—how are you finding navigating that on a global scale? No problem. I wouldn’t be interested in just taking one hotel and rolling them out . . . that’s not what I do. I don’t care if there are a thousand of them! You go to a city . . . a city has a certain vibe, a certain feel—the physical land is different, the plants, the architecture is different, the design is different . . . it’s different by definition; every city has a different personality; I’m trying to grasp that and have it embodied in a hotel. Do you feel that your partnership with Marriot has still allowed you to give the hotels that boutique feel and reflection of city-specific personality? The Marriot guys are great. It’s like that book, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus—I’m from Mars and they’re from Venus but they’re really smart guys and I really like them. How does your other new hotel brand, PUBLIC, differ from EDITION? The fundamental difference is that EDITION is more of a luxury. Public is a private label and so I can be a bit more adventurous—more subversive with it because it’s my own private brand. The idea of Public is to do something just as visually provocative, just as special as anything I’ve ever done and for it to be a real value—a modern approach that’s cheaper than other lifestyle hotels. What’s the most valuable lesson you have learned in business to date? Don’t be afraid of failure. When you get too tentative—too conservative—then you just follow the conventional approach and you’re not going do anything distinctive. But if you’re not afraid of failure, then you’re going try things. That’s one thing—don’t be afraid of failure. The other is: I never stop until I’m happy, and after a hotel opens or a residence opens there’s nothing about it that I would change. ✦

NEXT Mrs. Astor With the passing of storied patron Brooke Astor, we take a closer look at New York’s most philanthropic citizens and pose the question: Who are the next Mrs. Astors?

nown lovingly as “Mrs. Astor,” the late Brooke Astor was a darling of New York society and the undisputed queen of philanthropy– before it was fashionable. As the story goes, the real estate heiress once quipped, “Money is like manure; it’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around.” Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998, by the time of her death in 2007, the doyenne had sunk nearly $200 million into libraries, museums, hospitals, homeless shelters and community programs all over the city. The face of modern philanthropy in New York City, she was a fixture about town, not just at Park Avenue dinner parties, but as a regular visitor to the charities she patronized. Adored by princes, presidents and the people of New York, Mrs. Astor remains a heroine whose legacy of prodigious generosity—and impeccable taste—is both deeply admired and deeply missed. Below, we’ve named a few exceptional New Yorkers continuing her legacy.

he founder of Bloomberg L.P. and former mayor of New York dominates this list as both the most prominent and prolific New York philanthropist. To comprise all of his charitable giving, the second richest New Yorker and outgoing politician formed Bloomberg Philanthropies, focusing his resources into five key areas: public health, the arts, government innovation, the environment and education. Through his foundation, the political giant allotted an estimated $240 million in 2005, $60 million in 2006, $474 million in 2007, $150 million in 2009, $332 million in 2010, $311 million in 2011 and $370 million in 2012 to over a thousand different nonprofits that support the arts, human services, public affairs and other causes. It is also perhaps New York’s biggest open secret that the financier is an “anonymous” donor of the Carnegie Corporation, making annual gifts that range from $5 million to $20 million. Perhaps the biggest winner in the charity stakes is Bloomberg’s alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, where his combined giving has surpassed $1.1 billion. Annually ranked as one of the world’s largest philanthropic donors—consistently outgunned only by that saintly Gates couple and the venerable Warren Buffett—Michael Bloomberg is a verifiable giving machine.

scar de la Renta undisputedly masters elegance, and his second wife of 25 years is his biggest muse. As Zeus, king of the gods, ruled Mount Olympus, so Annette de la Renta sits atop Manhattan’s social mountain as the queen of chic. Best friends with a power set of international dignitaries and New York tastemakers, the de la Rentas vacation with Henry Kissinger and dine at Diane von Furstenberg’s. Rarely seen without a set of massive pearls on her neck, and with her slim physique swathed in her husband’s designs, Annette de la Renta has been an inductee of the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame since 1973. But if you think this socialite is only a hanger for garments that have been donned by nearly every first lady since Jackie O, think again. A formidable force in presentday philanthropy, the New Yorker serves as the vice chair of the board of the New York Public Library; on the boards of the Morgan Library, the Animal Medical Center and Engelhard Foundation. Most notably, this devotee of art serves as the head of the acquisitions committee at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2006, she became the permanent guardian of her longtime friend Brooke Astor. William Acquavella of Acquevella Galleries describes it as “without doubt the most important collection any private person has put together in many, many years.” A longtime art enthusiast, the cosmetics mogul is also a major benefactor of the Whitney Museum of American Art. His donation of $131 million in 2008 toward the museum’s endowment still stands as the largest in its history. Through the Leonard and Evelyn Lauder Fund, the dashing billionaire and his late wife sponsored several exhibitions at the Whitney (whose fifth-floor permanent collection galleries are named in the couple’s honor). Especially noteworthy, in 2012, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston opened The Postcard Age: Selections from the Leonard A. Upon completion of the Schwarzman College, designed by Yale School of Architecture dean Robert Stern, the first class of students is anticipated to enroll in 2016. In 2008, the generous couple contributed another $100 million toward the $1 billion expansion project of the New York Public Library system, whose board Stephen serves on as trustee. Shortly thereafter, the central reference building at 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue was renamed the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. That same year, the dynamic duo doled out $5 million to the Inner City Scholarship Fund; Christine acts as trustee on the organization’s board. Hers and her husband’s gift was the largest donation in the fund’s history. ✦

he Related Group has a well-deserved reputation for excellence. Buyers’ trust in this developer’s quality and innovation has positioned it as one of the most successful and elite companies in the game. Helmed by Chairman and CEO Jorge Pérez, and Carlos Rosso in Miami, who is president of development, Related has unquestionably contributed to Miami’s rise in reputation as a cultural and architectural hotspot. We caught up with Rosso to see what the company has coming up the pipeline and just how far Related’s impact on Miami reaches.
How did you get into the real estate business and how did you end up in Miami? I am an architect by training, originally from Argentina. I worked for over ten years in the Middle East—in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Cairo. And then I came to the United States in 2001 and got a master’s degree [in real estate development and finance] from MIT. While finishing my master’s, I interviewed for a job at Related and met with Jorge [Pérez], and he asked me 70 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • FEBRUARY 2014

miami scape public use, but we had to close a street to do the project, so our solution was to create this park. It will be about an acre in front of the building. The buildings are designed by Arquitectonica; interiors are by United Designers from London; and landscaping was done by Enea Studios from Switzerland. How are buyers responding? We have 350 units and have closed on close to 300 of them.
one in Midtown Miami and one in Hollywood. The one in Hollywood, again, is open for lease and we have reservations for 250 of the 400 [residential] units, so we are really happy with our return [and] with the feedback people are giving us. What are your plans for expansion of this brand? We are working right now in Berlin and we are going to start developing in Mexico very
“MIAMI IS GROWING AND MIAMI IS MATURING AS A CITY . . . WE ARE TRYING TO DO OUR PART.” to join Related. From there, I was an assistant project manager, then a project manager and then I started doing more international work. Now I am president of the company—having done more than 7,000 condo units since 2009. Have you had a favorite project you worked on? I like them all. I like the challenge of developing these projects; they are very challenging and complicated, but we love what we do. We are very passionate about design and art and mixing all that into successful projects. None of our projects are the same—we don’t repeat ourselves. We look at each location and think about the brand; we think about the architects, and we think about the interior designers. We have experience with buyers and understand what they love. We love to create these buildings. These pieces are going to outlive us. It seems like Related is booming with projects in Miami. Let’s talk about what you have in development, starting with Paraiso Bay. Paraiso Bay is a group of buildings on the bay: Most of the units have fantastic views of the ocean. The buildings all have incredible views; they’re 55 stories tall with views of the ocean from most of the floors, and all of South Beach. We are also proposing a public park—five blocks of land on the water. It’s an anomaly for a developer to donate an acre for 72 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • FEBRUARY 2014
What do you like about the Edgewater neighborhood? I think Edgewater is a great neighborhood, right on Biscayne Boulevard with great public transportation. On the east side, there’s the convenience of Edgewater and all of its commercial development and so much in development to the west. Residents will be surrounded by good things in that area. Tell us about Brickell Heights, your new condo development in Brickell. We like South Miami very much. It’s a great place to own a condo to rent or to use—Brickell on its own merit is probably attracting a lot of buyers. The architecture is again by Arquitectonica. This building is going to be a great place to live; it’s half a block away from Brickell CityCentre and will include a 40,000-square-foot Equinox [sports club]. In New York, we have Equinox clubs in all the Related buildings, and we have been hoping to find a site for Equinox in Brickell. [This property] has the density we wanted, which made it the right opportunity to add the Equinox brand. We started sales a month ago and have over 150 units sold; the response has been incredible. Finally, tell us about the Hyde Hotels brand. The concept for Hyde Resorts & Residences is a trendier, younger hotel and more affordable residences. It’s very, very trendy; we are doing
soon. We want to bring this widely overseas. What do you find most challenging about developing in Miami? Miami is a volatile market by nature, so we are always, always trying to find the equilibrium between the amounts of supply and demand. Miami is growing and Miami is maturing as a city—museums are being opened, with better restaurants, better hotels; hopefully in the future there will be better schools and better universities. We will attract a more stable job base and at the end of the day, that will be the real base of the things we build. So, that’s the challenge and we think that we are trying to do our part by improving the quality of the buildings by reducing the amount of levers used to build these buildings. We are trying to get involved with the community, to see how we can impact Miami in a positive way—from the Pérez Art Museum Miami [an initiative by Related founder Jorge Pérez] to trying to add better buildings and more jobs. You’re certainly doing your part. What is your favorite thing about Miami? My personal favorite thing about Miami? The weather. I think the weather in Miami is fantastic. Also, Miami is an extension of Latin America, so there is a very strong connection, and for me, being Hispanic and being from Argentina, it’s a wonderful place to live, to see my kids and my family grow. ✦

A question for one of the city’s top real estate experts . . . The Importance of Fair Housing Laws
JACK DEUTSCH
A Hall F. Willkie, President, Brown Harris Stevens Residential Sales; 212.906.9203 or hwillkie@bhsusa.com
s New Yorkers, we know that diversity is what makes our city so vibrant and productive. To protect everyone’s rights, there are fair housing laws that apply to residential real estate. In New York City, we are required to adhere to federal, state and local laws. Specifically protected categories include age, citizenship, familial status, handicap/ disability, marital/partnership status, national origin, occupation, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and lawful source of income. The purpose of fair housing laws is to make certain that everyone has an equal opportunity and fair treatment when looking for a home. Real estate brokers serve their clients in a fiduciary capacity; however, the city’s fair housing laws supersede any broker’s obligation to his/her clients. These laws are noble and important, and real estate agents are trained to ensure that customers and clients are treated accordingly. Simply put, housing discrimination is illegal and has no place here in our great city. ✦

Beauty
On-the-Go Meet beautypreneur Heidi Evora-Santiago of damali nyc, an on-site, concierge-level service that specializes in weddings and events
D
amali nyc is a beauty concierge service, specializing in bringing bridal and red carpet mobile beauty services to your doorstep. A total beauty resource with an extensive network of partnerships, damali nyc can provide any beauty service that clients desire.
What attracts high-end clients to damali nyc? I think what attracts our clients is our reputation for high-quality, detailed-oriented services. I attribute our popularity and success to a number of things, the number one being talent! Our entire team and extended partners are all chosen because they are at the top of their respected fields. Dependability, trust and discretion are also key components of our brand. Unlike a salon setting, there is an intimacy acquired with allowing someone into your personal space: whether it be their home, office, hotel suite or plane, we take the utmost care in respecting that. 98 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • FEBRUARY 2014
Beauty for weddings is a core part of your brand. What makes your “glam squad” unique in terms of the services you offer bridal parties? Our services are tailored specifically for the individual and we can provide almost any beauty service our clients desire . . . we offer “custom, personalized beauty.” I believe it’s not so much the uniqueness of the services but the quality and the professional way that services are executed. A lot is invested in a wedding, both monetarily and emotionally, so for me, my number one priority, when hiring a team member or partnering with other beauty vendors, is that they share in my philosophy of doing their absolute best to ensure that the day is as special as possible. And by that I mean being punctual, being patient and always going beyond what is expected to ensure that their contribution to the wedding day is perfect. So I would say the service that we possess that’s the most unique is our passion to make every bridal beauty experience a beautiful one.
ADE ADETAYO STUDIO
How does this philosophy differ for local and destination weddings? For destination weddings our passion to provide superior services remains the same. The sky’s the limit! Beyond New York, how has your expansion to Miami and Palm Beach impacted the damali nyc brand? It started out of convenience for our New York City makeup and hair clientele who “winter” in the Palm Beach and Miami area. This expansion has allowed us to increase our client base, our artistic team and extended partnerships. We are also looking to expand to L.A. in the near future. Are there any trends you are noticing in terms of what high-end clients are asking for? Quite frankly our clients don’t tend to be short-term trendy, but rather lean towards a more timeless beauty in terms of makeup and hair services. However, in terms of overall services, more and more clients are requesting “in office” services. And more and more companies are offering services for their employees at the workplace. ✦

HALEY FRIEDLICH
Dear AVENUE,
Bill Walshe, the man behind Viceroy Hotel Group, shares his Middle East preferences
As the CEO of Viceroy Hotel Group, Bill Walshe is hardly at a loss for swanky places to stay. So when we asked him to tell us the ins and outs of a place that is particularly special to him, our ears perked up to hear his response. On the heels of the recently opened Viceroy New York and as the man behind some of our favorite haunts, including Viceroy Miami and Viceroy Antigua, we had some predictions of where he might choose, but the Irish native managed to surprise and enlighten us with tales from the United Arab Emirates.
Far, far away The United Arab Emirates. I lived in Dubai for seven years, and I love the energy, creativity and culture of the UAE. I get to Abu Dhabi and Dubai every couple of months—it’s a long trip but luckily both Emirates and Etihad are among my favorite airlines in the world.
Keep it Viceroy I stay at Yas Viceroy in Abu Dhabi, one of the most visually stunning hotels in the world. Its location on the Formula 1 Race Track is truly unique. If I am in Dubai visiting the site of what will soon be Viceroy Dubai, I will stay with my former colleagues at one of Jumeirah Group’s hotels. I love the Arabian Souk at Madinat Jumeirah Dubai.
We could buy into this A “desert safari” in an SUV is a remarkable experience, and the beaches of the UAE are among the finest in the world. Taking a run down Dubai’s real-snow indoor ski slope is a 106 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • FEBRUARY 2014
surreal experience. Mostly my activities are work related, but happily the selection of restaurants for entertaining is world class.
Rap-city
Dubai and Abu Dhabi attract many celebrities, many of whom stay at Yas Viceroy, particularly at Formula 1 race time in November. Discretion precludes me from naming them, but last year I did get to see Jay-Z, Muse and Depeche Mode in concert in Abu Dhabi on
three consecutive F1 nights, which was awesome.
UAE Bucketlist
In Abu Dhabi, I would recommend a visit to the Grand Mosque, the world’s largest, and if the timing is right, attendance at the F1 Grand Prix. In Dubai, a visit to Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, is a must, and a trip to the Spice Souk bazaar offers a real taste of Dubai as it used to be.
Locally flavor infused Traveling as frequently as I do, I have come to truly appreciate the uniqueness of different destinations and cultures, and this translates into my obsession with creating a distinct “sense of place” with every Viceroy hotel we open. The world is not cookie cutter, and hotels should not be either. ✦

n Gstaad, the most intriguing billionaires are the ones who do not want to be seen. The richest girl in the world was here, but nobody knew it because that’s the way she wanted it. Then there’s the other side of this golden coin, personified by the designer Valentino, who’s dubbed “The Emperor” by his intimates and his partner Giancarlo Giammetti. The debonair duo entertains the crème de la crème in their chic chalet, Gifferhorn. Their wood-paneled home overflows with Old Master paintings, rare antiques and serious contemporary art. A posse of pugs and a tiny Yorkshire terrier roam freely. personal rooms are lush rust and gold paisley and pony-skin print fabrics; exotic carpets in shades of red, rose and beige. Every surface is an exquisite still-life. Lounging on the cozy silk-fringed furniture you may find Prince Nickolaos and Princess Tatiana of Greece and Denmark; Margherita Missoni; Tatiana Santo Domingo; Elton John and his spouse David Furnish; Khali Lassir, Maria Longoria, Charlene Shorto and Madonna and all her children, including Rocco Ritchie, who is quite a cut-up both on and off his custommade snowboards. Rocco, his pal Dominic Sesto and their self-proclaimed team of “Loose Cannons” made videos on the slopes and frolicked on Valentino’s Sheep by Claude Lalanne until someone whispered their value: $5 million. All told, the impeccably dressed pair are this Swiss village’s “Hosts with the Most.” At their intimate New Year’s Eve party, the slim and fit designer wore a Black Watch plaid suit. On another day they donned velvet ensembles: “Val” wore burgundy and “GG.” moss green. “We did not dress the same on purpose!” Giancarlo swore. They entertain effortlessly and flawlessly; their chef is the best in town. For dinner there are extraordinary plates with intricate leaf motifs and cabbage- and artichoke-shaped vessels filled with miniature vegetables. Valentino confides, “I have over 100 different sets of china.” The first course is miso-crusted asparagus presented on a ceramic box lined with lemon wedges and decorated with tiny pink orchids. Everything is light and healthy. “I don’t have rich banquets,” laughs the Emperor, who adds, “I eat simply.” The twosome received a thousand-piece puzzle as a house gift and, with the help of their guests, completed it in five days. It turned out to be a vintage New Yorker cover covered in fanciful animals. The magic is

in the details. They have an embroidered pillow that says: “You’ll always be my best friend, you know too much.” Hahaha! As Aileen Mehle, the peerless society columnist, likes to write. Who else would tell you these things? THE PALACE HOTEL TURNS 100 The Gstaad Palace hotel is the life and soul of this Alpine social scene. Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman and her husband Harvey Weinstein were among those who checked in. Roman Polanski has his own table next to the fireplace in the Great Room; at tea time, you’ll find him and his wife Emmanuelle Seigner catching up with friends. I ran into Ann Dexter-Jones, Laurence Graff, Simon de Pury, Patricia and Henry Hay, Sima and Peter Merian and Victoria Wyman. Members of the Schertz family, which has owned the Palace for three generations, gave a gala to celebrate the hotel’s hundredth birthday. Everyone came to scoop up the Beluga and foie gras and quaff Perrier Jouet Fleur de Champagne Rosé while viewing vintage film clips of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s grand entrances, and waiters in white tie and tails, on ice skates, delivering cocktails on silver trays as Rolls Royces pulled up to the hotel’s front steps. Among those who do Gstaad regularly are HRH Crown Prince Pavlos and Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece and their daughter Princess Olympia; Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana of Greece and Denmark; Pia Getty; Janna Bullock; Sharon Handler and Ambassador John Loeb; Anne Hathaway; Beanie Esteve; Yoko Ono; Lady Liliana and Lord William Cavendish and their children Georgiana and Edward Cavendish. Andrea Schertz, who currently heads up the Palace, hosted a Great Gatsby-themed party at the GreenGo, the infamous nightclub underneath the hotel where the young, royal and rich flock after midnight. I spotted the Material Girl’s daughter Lourdes, Zoe Remmel, Julian Hay, Eugenia Bullock, Arina Berezovsky and all the pretty young things who go to Le Rosey, on the dance floor that is 110 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • FEBRUARY 2014

suspended over the pool. I’ve been asked not to reveal the names of the madcap flappers who jumped into the water, but I can tell you they were fined 2,000 euros and banned from the hot spot for two years. Time will tell if their billionaire fathers will procure them a pardon. The next king of Bhutan is currently enrolled at Le Rosey and the future Grand Duke of Luxembourg is among the alumni, along with King Juan Carlos I of Spain, King Baudouin I of Belgium, King Fuad II of Egypt, King Ntare V of Burundi, Aga Khan IV, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Winthrop Rockefeller, to name but a few. THE ALPINA AND THE EAGLE Over at Marcel Bach and Jean-Claude Mimran’s Alpina, the über-chic hotel whose Sixth Senses Spa, along with Café Royal’s Akasha Spa in London, are the edgiest and most luxurious state-of-the-art facilities of their kind in the world; there were screenings of The Wolf of Wall Street and Philomena. Guests included Ingrid Sischy, Tabitha Simmons, Craig McDean and billionaire Bob Manoukian, who gave a postscreening supper at his villa. Rachel Lehmann, the savvy gallerist who owns the Lehman Maupin Gallery in SoHo, christened her art-laden chalet on the Alpina’s grounds with a lively fête. She reproduced her Jeff Koons sculpture of Mickey and Minnie Mouse in ice at the entrance so no one would, get lost because a bouquet of colored balloons just doesn’t cut it in Gstaad, n’est-ce pas? DJ Brendan J. Sullivan, who wrote the Lady Gaga memoir Rivington Was Ours, spun into the wee hours for the cognoscenti you always see at Frieze and Art Basel. The exclusive Eagle Club, whose members include Prince Nicholas Romanov, the columnist Taki Theodoracopulos, Roger Moore, Claire and Jamie Barber, Adnan Khashoggi and Loulou and Geoffrey Moore, is the only place to be seen at lunch. Otherwise, it’s better to stay home and take a nap. Unless, of course, you’re invited to Valentino’s. ✦

I
f anyone has an instinctive eye for luxury, it’s Lady Tina Green. An empress of style and opulence, she is Britain’s queen of retail; her husband, Sir Philip Green, is a clothing-store tycoon (he owns Topshop) and principal of the Arcadia Group. When Lady Green’s not hitting the high seas on an ocean liner, she travels between her firm Argent Design’s offices in Monaco and London and works to transform the interiors of homes, yachts and private planes into sumptuous havens for the über-rich. She’s also collaborated with Lalique, the French crystal brand, to create a 370-piece Art Deco-inspired collection of furniture and home accessories, Lalique Maison. In conjunction with the opening of Lalique’s boutique at the Bal Harbour Shops, the international grande dame reveals what she loves about a Miami state of mind. WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT STATE OF MIND? I’m on holiday [in Barbados], so I’m in a very happy place [laughs].
WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO LIVE IN MIAMI? North Bay Road or La Gorce Island. For living, I like that area—I think it’s divine. WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU ARRIVE? My son owns a home there; I just love being there with him: relaxing in the garden and looking at downtown Miami from the house. In the evening, I’ll be sitting having a drink, [looking at the view], without a doubt. WHAT NEWSPAPER COLUMN DO YOU READ FIRST IN THE MORNING? I read the Daily Mail.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF [LIFE IN] MIAMI? I love being able to wake up in the morning, and it’s such an easy lifestyle. That’s what it is. It’s a lovely, great lifestyle. It’s trendy and it’s easy. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO GET AROUND MIAMI? On the waterway—I love it on a boat. Indian Creek—passing the beautiful homes there. WHICH SHOPS DO YOU RELY ON? The Bal Harbour Shops; that’s my favorite area. I love Roberto Cavalli there, Neiman Marcus, pretty much everything. And then the new design district—it’s very trendy and I love some of the stores there. IF YOU WERE INVISIBLE FOR A DAY IN MIAMI, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Sit in Zuma and eat lunch all day [laughs]. No, I’ll tell you what I’d do: I would sit on the dock of our home and watch the manatees. WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST EXTRAVAGANCE? Handbags. DO YOU HAVE ANY MIAMI DISCOVERIES? The Webster, and Alchemy on Lincoln Road WHERE IS PARADISE FOR YOU? Sitting on a beautiful yacht with my family. That would be paradise to me.

WHOM DO YOU MOST ADMIRE? My husband [Sir Philip Green]. IF YOUR HOUSE WERE ON FIRE, WHICH THREE THINGS WOULD YOU RESCUE? What? My god. Should I get my children? That’s the first thing I’d do. I wouldn’t care about anything else, to be honest. That would be it—I would get my family safely out of there. What’s the second thing I’d do? I suppose I would look for my passport—and my jewelry [laughs]. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? If you’re going to do something, do it with a passion or don’t do it at all. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PIECE FROM YOUR COLLABORATION WITH LALIQUE MAISON? I would say the black laquered Victoire chair—with the [clear crystal] head of the Victoire on the armchair and [ivory silk fabric]. That’s one of my favorite pieces.
