DEAR READERS, WELCOME TO OUR first Miami issue! This is the time of year when it seems like everyone in New York is getting out of the cold to spend a little time down south. The impetus for this mass migration is, of course, Art Basel Miami Beach. Since its inception in 2002, Art Basel Miami Beach has grown from a little-known art fair to an international gathering of epic proportions. More than 70,000 people will descend on Miami the first week of December. The city, already a pretty vibrant place to begin with, will take on circuslike elements of fun. People talk about the fair as the art world’s Burning Man, meaning that there are so many events and parties to attend that

for the first week of December the fair seems like one enormous piece of performance art. And speaking of performance art, AVENUE is delighted to showcase a portfolio of artists and their gallerists who will be exhibiting at the fair, including the extraordinary Marina Abramovic. The power of performance is something that Abramovic excels in. I’m sure she and Sean Kelly, her brilliant gallerist, will lead the charge down there.
KEITH MAJOR
“The city, already a pretty vibrant place to begin with, will take on circuslike elements of fun.” For our first Miami cover we have Jorge Pérez, the unofficial “king” of Miami. Not only did Pérez give his hard-earned cash to the Miami Art Museum when it needed it, he also donated a large collection of his Latin American art to the institution. A self-made billionaire and the son of Cuban exiles, Pérez has also signed the Giving Pledge, started by Warren Buffett, agreeing to give away half his fortune by the time he dies. Perez is the epitome of a 21st-century philanthropist. Another great Miami character we are featuring this month is Micky Wolfson. Wolfson is one of a kind. Brought up in gilded circumstances, he used his education and upbringing to start two museums, the Wolfsonian in Miami and the Wolfsoniana in Genoa, Italy. In person, Wolfson radiates old-world glamour. He’s is probably the most invited man in Miami, as everyone wants to hear his stories. Tom Austin, a writer who has known Wolfson for decades, managed to convince the raconteur to let us in on a few of his secret spots. I can’t wait to try them for myself! Daisy Prince

DEAR FRIENDS,
Hope to see you all on the AVENUE, not just Park and Fifth, but also Collins, Brickell and Worth!
AS THE NORTHEAST feels the gray bite of winter, we are nearly green with envy that Florida remains generally sunny and warm. And this winter will be especially busy for AVENUE, as we follow our readers for the December, January and February issues, much like the tradition of following them to the Hamptons in the summer. We will be publishing as AVENUE in New York City, and as AVENUE on the Beach in South Florida, with distribution in both Palm Beach and Miami. Miami continues to appeal to and attract New Yorkers, with its vibrant, international flair, as well as with the creation of many new real estate developments for the discerning market. For years, our readers have enjoyed Palm Beach as well, and the community continues to delight many of them with its gorgeous homes, shops, restaurants and beaches. Also of great appeal to our readers is the vibrant art scene, especially with Miami’s art fairs happening the first week in December. Our December issue is chock full of art fair coverage and many of our New York readers descend on Miami each year to enjoy Art Basel and the myriad of other events that have sprung up around this monster fair. With so many of our New York friends and collectors, not to mention the galleries and professional art crowd, heading south, it was a natural for us to join them. Of course, AVENUE on the Beach issues enable our advertisers to extend their brand messages to a fresh market, while still reaching our core influential audience in New York City. We hope you enjoy this issue, whether you are enjoying the winter in New York City or in South Florida. Hope to see you all on the AVENUE, not just Park and Fifth, but also Collins, Brickell and Worth! Kind Regards, Randi Schatz

luck, cluck, ho ho, clink clink and ka-ching. This season sends us careening toward the gray quiet of January, but not before we are sated and inundated with the best our burg has to offer: new plays, the most eagerly awaited movies that wait to debut till closest to voting time, and the food, drink, cheer and sparkle that makes New York the most special holiday town in the world. Here are a few early entries: The Museum of the City of New York honored perhaps its most ardent, well-known supporter, Mark Gilbertson, at the 30th annual New York After Dark cocktail. They also honored the very gracious and deserving Allison Aston and Tara Rockefeller, who demurred, “It’s all about Mark,” but of course, he was all about deflecting credit to the Tara Rockefeller, Mark Gilbertson and Allison Aston museum’s supporters. Chuck Scarborough introduced Mark, who remembered the early “homespun events,” where he was seen in the local Gristedes that afternoon in his dinner jacket, buying last-minute lemons and limes for the crowd that had grown tenfold. He told us about the year his mother broke the rules at their beach club by “borrowing” their beach chairs and umbrellas to haul into New York for the party. He remembered Andrew Roosevelt on a stepladder, hanging the decorations, and Bill Manger supplying the chicken salad, enough for “a family lunch,” requiring a major delivery from Kentucky Fried Chicken. In those days, they raised $20K; now they average $1 million with their two events. And his stalwart friends wouldn’t miss it. This night they included Heather Mnuchin, Celerie Kemble, Jamie Creel and Marco Scavani, Nicole Hanley Mellon and Mathew Mellon, Michele Smith, Simone and Chris Mailman, Chappy Morris, Amy Hoadley, Tiffany Dubin, Chris Johnson, Helene Comfort, Caroline Dean and Helen Schifter. Though I treasure Sunday nights at home, when Sting beckons, I go. The Last Simone and Ship had a rousing, exciting opening night, strewn with pinchable moments too Christopher Mailman good to believe. Before the musical opened, Sting and the cast serenaded the Jersey Boys cast, who perform in the theater across the street, with “Every Little Ellen Ward Scarborough and Chuck Scarborough Thing She Does Is Magic,” a tradition that will mandate a song in return from the Boys. We settled into our seats, but tapped and swayed in them to the extraordinary music, dance and choreography. Then, during the standing ovation, Sting took to the stage and sang with the entire cast; goose bumps, tears, gratitude and pumping hearts abounded, and of course there is that Tantric rumor (I’m surprised we didn’t lose anyone). The much deserved celebration, which continued at Chelsea Piers, included Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower, producer Jimmy Nederlander and Margo, Bruce Springsteen, Melanie Griffith, Queen Noor, Ron Perelman, Liam Neeson, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Billy Joel Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber and Sting’s lovely, lucky and perhaps tired wife, Trudie Styler. One of my favorite fall events is the Studio Museum in Harlem’s annual dinner dance. Ironically, cocktails are held in the Museum of Finance, followed by dinner, across the street, at Cipriani Wall Street, as far away Cast from The Last Ship from Harlem while still being in Manhattan. The museum’s charismatic director, Thelma Golden, presented the Joyce Alexander Wein Artist prize (created by her husband, George Wein, founder of the Newport Jazz Festival) to Samuel Levi Jones, and honored supporters Martin and Rebecca Eisenberg. As always, Saundra Parks created the magical décor this year: bolts of red acrylic fabric, softened by bouquets, soared above our tables. Chairs Kathryn Chenault, Carole Sutton Lewis, Jacqueline Bradley, Amelia Ogunlesi and Teri Trotter helped raise a record $1.7 million dollars, and celebrated with friends including Lise and Michael Evans, Tiki Barber, Ray McGuire and Crystal McCrary, John and Susan Rebecca and Martin Eisenberg Hess, Katherine Farley and Jerry Speyer, Chuck Close, Debra and Leon Trudie Styler and Sting with Thelma Golden Black and B. Michael. ✦

THE BEST OF BASEL 2014 AVENUE’s Exclusive Guide to the Best of Art Basel, Miami Beach
S
ince its launch in 2002, Art Basel Miami has served as America’s premier international art fair, connecting galleries and artists with an international audience of collectors, museum directors and curators. More than 75,000 people flocked to Miami Beach last December to participate in the arts-centric circus that is Basel. It’s quickly becoming known as the art world’s answer to Burning Man. Only at Basel will a long day spent walking around the Miami Beach Convention Center’s 500,000-square-foot space be met with over-the-top evening activities like karaoke at the Standard’s Chez Andre with Steven Tyler and Lenny Kravitz, or the chance to catch an intimate performance at one of Miami’s hottest late-night venues by Lady Gaga or A$AP Rocky. Below are just a few of Art Basel Miami 2014’s highly anticipated events and exhibits; be sure to visit www.artbasel.com for updated information on Artist Conversations and events! Happy Baseling!

Everything Old is New Again
Two of the brightest new stars on Miami’s beach are old establishments repurposed for a new century. Canny, respectful developers have given the Surf Club and the Shelborne each a second life.
M
iami Beach is again proving worrisome to those who love its history. Though the Art Deco hotel district in South Beach has, for decades, been a monument to enlightened preservation, cries of concern regularly arise over the fate of historic structures facing wrecking balls. But simultaneously, a counternarrative has been written—and it now looks likely to become a bestseller. Local government has changed regulations to encourage protection of historic properties, and developers, who tend to bulldoze the past rather than tend to its aging glories, are choosing to preserve highly visible historic properties and use them as the hubs of glossy new developments, combining old and new, jettisoning only the hopelessly obsolete. One example, the former Shelborne Hotel on Collins Avenue, now the Shelborne Wyndham Grand, has already reopened. Another, the Surf Club, formerly a private bathing establishment just to the north

in the town of Surfside, is still a work in progress, but already a passel of wealthy New Yorkers—including project participants architect Richard Meier and Pamela Liebman, CEO of Corcoran, the real estate powerhouse—have paid deposits to reside in the next link in the international chain of ultraposh Four Seasons Hotel & Residences. It is an accident of history that these two Miami Beach institutions began life as polar opposites. The first was a Jewish resort hotel, the other a bastion of calcified Waspdom that excluded Jews and other minorities for decades—long enough, in fact, that its policies became quite notorious. As late as 1965, Charlotte Curtis, then the New York Times’ canny observer of social norms and nonsense, made national news when she observed that while Miami had the world’s third largest population of Jews, there were none among the Surf Club’s 600 member families. But then, as Time magazine would note at the time, the airing of such an observation was even more unusual than the Surf Club’s archaic anti-Semitism.

Harvey Firestone of the Firestone Tires family is credited with creating the Surf Club just before 1929’s great stock market crash. According to writer Tom Austin’s book, The Surf Club, Firestone was on his yacht cruising just north of Miami with several friends, among them Miami Herald publisher James Cox, and Carl Fisher, another early automotive magnate, who was also a founding father of Miami Beach, when they all decided that a private club they belonged to called the Bath Club, founded just a few years earlier, had gotten too crowded, and it was time to start a new, more exclusive one on empty land there. Architect Russell Pancoast, whose grandfather was another Miami Beach pioneer, was hired; inspired by the work of Addison Mizner in Palm Beach, he erected a Mediterranean-style club with wings of cabanas that would be elaborately tricked out by members, mostly vacationing northern swells. It all attracted a revolving cast of glam guests ranging from movie stars (among them Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Gary Cooper and Elizabeth Taylor) to international freeloaders and figures of renown (the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Winston Churchill and Noel Coward). After its January 1931 debut, the Surf Club’s revels were orchestrated by manager Alfred I. Barton, a scion of Philadelphia society who started his career arranging President Woodrow Wilson’s post–World War I victory tour of Europe and then did production design for Cecil B. DeMille before joining the club. “Although various other persons contrive to insinuate their occasional whoopee into the public prints for greater lineage,” the social chronicler Lucius Beebe would soon write, Barton was “America’s authentic Number One party giver . . . [at the] very snooty, very costly and very chic Surf Club. Dreaming up routs, festivals, pageants, charades, barn raisings and feastings is the breath of Mr. Barton’s life.” Meantime, lesser lights had to content themselves with life at less uppity beach hotels like the Shelborne, erected by Jewish developers in 1940, and designed by Igor Polevitzky, a Russian American who 72 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • AVENUE ON THE BEACH • DECEMBER 2014

specialized in buildings that seamlessly blended inside and out. The owners enhanced the property with cabanas and a new pool in 1954, and, three years later, added an eight-story addition, lobby and porte cochere off Collins Avenue, designed by a young architect, Morris Lapidus. Polevitzky’s original “circular forms became part of his vernacular,” says Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos who, with her husband Paul, both noted New York social figures, bought a third of the hotel early in 2013 and began a gut renovation to restore what she calls “an Art Deco gem.” They rediscovered Polevitzky’s original lobby and sweeping staircase, which had been hidden beneath condo units retrofitted into the lobby in the 1970s. Both the Surf Club and the Shelborne were still operating in the first decade of the 21st century, but their use-by date was past. The former was “a little bit falling apart, ill- and over-renovated, very tired, very sad,” says Nadim Ashi, a technology entrepreneur turned developer, who attended an event there after moving to Miami Beach and then restoring a mansion originally built for a son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Ashi decided it was “a hidden gem hidden behind walls,” and hired architect Richard Meier to return it to its original glory, surrounding it with three light-as-air glass buildings containing a 77-room hotel as well as luxurious condos that are selling to wealthy fashion, finance and professional types for between $3 million and $40 million. Both the Kanavoses and Ashi were committed to restoring the links to the glorious pasts of their properties—and in the process making them more similar than they were once different. “When there’s an architecturally significant building that can still fulfill its intended purpose, it’s the most sustainable way to build,” Kanavos says. “What I saw that nobody else saw was the tremendous value of the historic components,” adds Ashi. “Buyers love the idea that we respected and enhanced them. A great architect and Four Seasons? That’s the salt and pepper. You don’t need anything more.” ✦

orge M. Pérez is obliging a visitor with an impromptu art tour. And even though the venue is his downtown Miami development company’s headquarters on sparkling Biscayne Bay—and not the art museum down the road that bears his name—the walkabout is not entirely brief. Accompanied by his art director, the developer, art collector and philanthropist pauses in front of sculptures, paintings, drawings and an animated video to admire, explain or just exclaim. “Fantastic,” he mutters at one stop. “Incredible,” he says at another. Back in his office, Pérez himself appears in a piece called Los Constructores, or The Builders, by Spanish artist Lluís Barba. The work, a reinterpretation of a famous image by Fernand Léger, combines art and construction, a perfect mix for the 65-year-old chairman, chief executive officer and founder of the Related Group. Although Pérez is best known for shaping Miami’s skyline—he has been dubbed the “Donald Trump of the Tropics”—art is one of the driving forces of his life. Three years ago, as the new $131 million home for the institution formerly known as the Miami Art Museum was taking shape on the bay, Pérez announced a gift of cash and Latin American art now valued at a total of $40 million. In exchange, the critically acclaimed and locally embraced Herzog & de Meuron–designed structure was named the Pérez Art Museum Miami. For the self-made billionaire, a son of Cuban exiles who came to the United States for college and eventually became a citizen, the move was a true Miami success story. “I think that is his crowning glory, without a doubt,” said friend Mike Fernandez, chairman of Miami-based private investment firm MBF Healthcare Partners. Pérez was born in Argentina to wealthy Cuban parents; his father, Jorge Antonio Pérez, ran a lab for pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly, and his mother, Raquel, was a “professional student and socialite.” After the death of a grandfather, the Pérez family—Jorge, his younger brother and their parents—moved back to Cuba in 1958. Only two years later, after Fidel Castro came to power and seized Pérez’s father’s lab, the family fled to join relatives in Colombia. “My parents lost everything,” Pérez said. “They took my mother’s jewels, the ones she was wearing on her fingers, at the airport.” Both highly educated, his parents went to work rebuilding their lives. His father became a salesman in Bogotá, Colombia, while his mother taught and translated for the United Nations. She learned how to drive a car—a skill that had never before been necessary because the family had always had a driver. Throughout his childhood, Pérez’s mother instilled an appreciation for art and culture, taking her sons to museums, talking about literature, and attending the theater. “They were very strong people, just great role models, examples,” he said. They sent the children to top private schools in Colombia, where Pérez attended high school. There was never any question that he would pursue a higher education: first the junior college now called Miami Dade College, then C. W. Post College in Long Island, where he graduated summa cum laude, and finally the University of Michigan, where he earned a master’s degree in urban planning. “My father would always say education is the thing they can’t take away from you,” Pérez said. “Education was very important: the capacity to change, the ability to lose everything and still not be defeated.”

hat realization hit home during the recent recession, when the real estate market imploded in Miami and potential buyers walked away from their deposits on luxury condos. The company responsible for more than 80,000 condo and apartment units in Florida lost more than $1 billion. “We thought we were doing everything right and taking all the precautions, and the market sort of destroyed us,” said Pérez, who dropped off the Forbes list of wealthiest Americans during the downturn. “If it wasn’t for the exile mentality—every time I earned a dollar I put 20 cents away—I would have been in much worse shape.” Today, he has an estimated net worth of $3.2 billion, and the company is working on about 80 projects around the world. Such numbers were unthinkable when Pérez began his career heading up economic development and urban planning in Miami. After he started consulting, advising developers on where they should invest in projects, he realized he wanted to be the one to build those developments. “I started doing public housing,” he said. “I had that social consciousness, and at the same time I wanted to do something creative and make money.” While competing for affordable housing jobs, he met a New York developer named Stephen Ross who had started the Related Companies a few years earlier.
“If it wasn’t for the exile mentality—every time I earned a dollar I put 20 cents away—I would have been in much worse shape.” Pérez points out that he was the victor in those competitions, but there was no bad blood: With Ross as a minority partner, Pérez started the Related Group in 1979 at the age of 29. The company made $1 million its first year of operation. But more important, the partners developed a friendship that has lasted more than 35 years. Pérez compares it to “an old marriage.” Today, Ross and Pérez run their companies separately, but speak regularly, vacation together and share another passion: the Miami Dolphins, which Ross owns. Pérez is vice chairman of the team, and the two make a point to attend every game together. And while Ross might feel like a longtime spouse, Pérez could be described as blissfully happy in his actual 13-year marriage to Darlene Boytell-Pérez, a nurse practitioner whom he spotted across a crowded room nearly 20 years ago at a black-tie affair for the Miami International Film Festival, which he chaired. Too shy to talk to her directly, Pérez—who was at that point five years divorced with three kids—had a friend approach her to try to make an introduction. The friend gave her the hard sell: “He’s the greatest bachelor there is! He’s available and he wants to meet you! He’s a developer, his name is Jorge Pérez.” Boytell-Pérez, 49, laughs as she recalls her reaction. “I didn’t even know what a developer did,” she said. “That’s how bad it was.” Still, she was intrigued, and slipped him her number. He called early the next morning to invite her out. “We’ve been dating every since,” she said. They wed in the spring of 2001.

oytell-Pérez, a liver specialist who sees patients two to three days a week at a private gastroenterology practice, said one of the couple’s priorities is making time for their own date nights. “We’re so crazy in our lifestyles and all the things we have committed to—with community and boards and work ourselves,” she said. They have an 11-year-old son, Felipe, with an active schedule of soccer practice, movie watching and pizza eating. “Because of him, I’ve probably gone to every kid movie,” said Pérez. “Every weekend, we have at least one day that’s father and son.” While Felipe has suggested his career plans might include building like his father after he plays “for Barcelona like Messi,” Pérez’s two older sons already work for the company. After gaining experience elsewhere—their father’s rule—Jon Paul, 30, works in Miami as a vice president and Nicholas, 26, is stationed in Spain, where the distressed economy has provided real estate opportunities. Daughter Christina, 31, is moving back to Miami at the end of the year after earning her master’s degree in social work at Loyola University Chicago. “She’s the do-gooder of the family,” Pérez said. “I’m very pleased with that.” Pérez takes the most pride in his children and the family’s close relationship. His wife says maintaining those connections is another top concern. “Sundays are family days, no matter what, even if it’s an hour or two or three, we’re always together,” Boytell-Pérez said. “Everybody realizes there’s little time for these quality moments, and we’re really making an effort to make sure that’s part of the week.” Pérez had occasion to reexamine his focus after a health scare in 2009. He felt ill, but tests were turning up normal, and some suspected mere nerves in the midst of the real estate crisis. Boytell-Pérez insisted on more thorough tests, including a scan that revealed a mass on her husband’s pancreas. “It was very large, very scary,” she said. Pérez had the growth removed at Massachusetts General Hospital, and it turned out not to be cancerous. He still takes pills to help him digest because he doesn’t produce enzymes, but said he is healthy and lives normally—which includes playing frequent tennis or doing some other sort of exercise almost every day. “This one makes you face things in a really direct, real way,” he said. “Have I done all the things that I should have? What have I done wrong? And what should I do different?” Since the ordeal, Pérez said he has learned to delegate more at work, take time to travel and stay off constant email during vacations. The family lives on Biscayne Bay in Miami’s bohemian Coconut Grove neighborhood and also has homes in Tuscany and Utah. Closer to home, they escape on weekends to their place on the beach in Hollywood, north of Miami, where Pérez buries himself in the books he spends more than two hours a day reading. He recently finished the novels Independence Day by Richard Ford and Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, and tries to break up modern-day titles with works from Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Dashiell Hammett or Gabriel García Márquez. In 2012, the couple signed on to the Giving Pledge, the initiative from Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates to encourage billionaires to pledge half their wealth to charity. “I had always thought of giving the majority of what I was going to have to charity,” he said. Before making the pledge, Pérez told his kids what he was considering—an announcement that was met with some surprise. “But they understand that it’s going for the right causes, that we’re very fortunate and that we’re wealthy people, and that regardless of how much I give . . . they’ll continue to be wealthy people,” he said. “They have to set their own course and their own career. I don’t want them just to be like rich kids; I’m very conscious of that.”

e and his wife support cancer research at Mass General; programs at the University of Miami and Florida International University; the United Way; several local arts organizations; and other causes—including, of course, the museum. Pérez had been a board member since 1994, and as chair of the capital committee pledged $5 million. But when the need for more support became clear, PAMM director Thom Collins said Pérez “stepped forward.” “He’s been generous to the institution for years, but nobody put the bite on Jorge in this regard,” Collins said. “Jorge came forward at a critical time in the campaign because he believed in the project.” The name change wasn’t without controversy; a few board members resigned in protest, arguing that the county’s name should remain because taxpayers were providing the bulk of the funding. But that storm passed quickly, and the building—modeled after Miami’s famous Stiltsville community of shacks that jut above the water in Biscayne National Park—has become a gathering place for locals. Pérez himself visits frequently, to grab lunch at the Stephen Starr restaurant Verde, or take friends for tours (and a fundraising pitch). Ross has donated $1 million and Fernandez, the health-care investment company founder, pledged $5 million. “I love to walk around the museum with Jorge because he not only has terrific knowledge of everything that’s going on and art in general, but also seeing his face and how much he enjoys explaining to you the works of art and the thought that went into designing those spaces,” said friend and fellow developer Edgardo Defortuna, president and CEO of Fortune International Realty. “It’s a great pleasure to be able to experience it that way.” Pérez calls his involvement with PAMM a “lifetime commitment” and intends for his collection to end up there. Collins, the director, said Pérez is “completely on call” whenever the staff needs him and is “generous in ways that people will never know.” “It’s sort of a miracle to me,” Collins said. “This guy can’t possibly sleep at all; such incredible energy . . . He’s superhuman.” ✦ DECEMBER 2014 • AVENUE MAGAZINE • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 91

The Pact The relationship between dealer and artist is a sacrosanct pact. The dealer is the conduit to the outside world; they explain the concept behind the art, the motivation and the emotion that accompanies it. For the artist it is even simpler. The dealer is the first person to look at the work, understand it and help the artist recognize that they are not alone. SEAN KELLY did everything in his power to avoid meeting performance artist Marina Abramovic. It was 1991, and he had just gotten out of two institutional jobs (director of the Baths Festivals and the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery) and was just striking out on his own, representing artists. Everyone said he should meet Abramovic, but he knew taking on a performance artist is no small task (planning shows is complicated, and moreover there’s never much to sell); he was such of a fan of her work that doing it justice would be a job that might consume him. He was so determined to elude her that he would be, for example, in Berlin and someone would say, “Oh, Marina just got in last night,” and he’d just leave. Then walking into a lunch with Julião Sarmento, one of his artists, he walked over to a table and “there was a woman sitting there with long dark hair, and she turned around and I looked, and I knew I was set up,” he said. “And I knew I was screwed. That I was gonna work with this woman for the rest of my life.” Kelly was right about his dedication to her, which has not waned over the course of 20 years. “He comes from that museum background: when he thinks of a show he thinks of a show in a historical context, not just what’s salable or not at that moment for an artist,” Abramovic said. “That’s a huge difference from most dealers.”

EDWARD TYLER NAHEM’S first impression of ruby amanze was that she is an African diaspora artist without necessarily fitting any of those traits associated with one, namely someone whose drawings look at the questions associated with that topic in “more subtle and much more ethereal terms.” Nearly instantly, he invited her to participate in his upcoming group show “No Such Place: Contemporary African Artists in America,” curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah and Dexter Wimberly (whom Nahem met through his role of producer on the Fela Kuti musical Fela!). And if her resistance to classification is what best qualified her for the show, it was also what made Amanze want to do it. “The whole point of the show is there isn’t such a thing as contemporary African art. There’s no such thing as contemporary European art or contemporary Asian art,” she said. “That’s a ridiculous term, especially when you think about how vast the content is.” Participation in the group show, with its many partners and limited commitment, may be the art world’s equivalent of a one-night stand, but Nahem said he’s open to making the relationship a little more serious with Amanze.

THE PAINTER MICKALENE THOMAS wasn’t immediately sold on Lehmann Maupin; she’d seen too many friends burned by galleries that weren’t the right fit. Her first studio visit with its co-owners David Maupin and Rachel Lehmann was in 2006, but it wasn’t until the following year that she agreed to be represented by them, mainly because they met her three business qualifications: they were well-financed, had a European connection through Lehmann, and had a diverse stable of artists in terms of backgrounds and mediums. What she didn’t expect was that they’d become a source of support to her—“It’s really important for me that they’re able to learn about the work so they can discuss it with other people”—whether she was expanding to mediums like video or simply wanted to chat. With Maupin she discusses “relationships and children, because we’re both in same-sex relationships and both have kids”; she turns to Lehmann more for business advice. “I think as a gallerist, when you’re passionate and you really believe in your artist, it’s easy to sell their work,” Maupin said, adding that they had one more thing in common: a love of hip-hop and dancing.

DOMINIQUE LÉVY first heard about the work of sculptor Peter Regli about a year ago, from a friend in her native Switzerland who was about to go on a road trip to the tiny town of Engadin, just to see a show of his work. Lévy’s own fandom wasn’t far behind, and was no less fervent. “He’s the first artist I’ve met who can talk about stone with such passion,” she said. “He’s completely in love with stone, and he travels the world looking for stone the way the old masters did.”
“We’re both from Switzerland, so we have a lot of inside Swiss jokes,” she added, saying that they also both have a love of Arabic music in common. “He’s a great cook.” Lévy’s gallery generally shows more established artists, but the whirlwind romance inspired Lévy to bring Regli to Art Basel Miami Beach this year, and she helped him stage an ambitious show in front of the Flatiron Building last January. “She gets my sense of humor, which not everyone does, and helps me translate it for a new audience,” Regli said.

Hey Micky Micky Wolfson grew up as a prince of Miami, and created the internationally recognized Wolfsonian-FIU museum from his collection of more than 120,000 objects. No one knows Miami better, and during Art Basel, he provides a glimpse of hidden Miami to benefit his museum. by Tom Austin
On a splendid December morning in Miami, Mitchell “Micky” Wolfson Jr.—the founder of the Wolfsonian museum on Miami Beach, and Miami’s version of Henry Clay Frick from the Frick Collection in New York and Duncan Phillips of the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC—is back in town for high season. During Art Basel, Wolfson will drop in to see the new exhibition—“Myth and Machine: The First World War in Visual Culture”—at the Wolfsonian, a show that encompasses one of his singular collecting finds, a 1918 Eugen Osswald lithograph of a German soldier on horseback. Apart from his appearances at the museum, Wolfson is, as usual, ready to wrench the most fun possible out of high season in Miami. Over the years, I’ve spent many nights in Miami driving around in Wolfson’s vintage Cadillac with his vast circle of houseguests, a list that always seems to include a brace of Italian countesses: one evening, a handful of invincibly elegant aristocrats stepped off the plane from Italy and immediately found themselves on a exhaustive tour of Miami, winding up with a 2 a.m. stroll through the then very emergent El Portal neighborhood: now, Iggy Pop keeps an art studio in El Portal. At Nervi, in Genoa, Italy, Wolfson founded the Wolfsoniana, another museum and study center dedicated to his collection. On this morning in Miami, Wolfson—who keeps places in New York, Genoa and Paris—is fresh from a transatlantic crossing on a cruise ship, a mode of old-school travel he enjoys. Wolfson grew up as a child of Miami Beach privilege, and learned the social graces early on: his father, Mitchell Wolfson Sr., cofounded the entertainment and news conglomerate Wometco Enterprises. After the death of his parents and

the sale of Wometco, Wolfson set about spending his inheritance on building an extraordinary collection. Wolfson is a born collector: at the age of 12, he acquired a copy of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, illustrated by Gustave Doré, and began a key collection that now spans some 5,000 items. During his summer camp stays in Estes Park, Colorado, he became fascinated by the massive key collection—some 20,000 in all—adorning the public areas of the Baldpate Inn: Wolfson was also a fan of George M. Cohan’s play Seven Keys to Baldpate Inn. Inspired, Wolfson began collecting these objects during trips with his parents, from voyages on various ocean liners to stays at such hotels as the Ritz in Paris and London’s Claridge’s. Along with artist Michele Oka Doner, another child of Miami Beach privilege, Wolfson coauthored the book Miami Beach: Blueprint of an Eden, a look at the life of Miami Beach from the 1920s to the 1960s: the book’s photo of a Wometco 1950s premiere at the Carib movie theater, a screening of Joan Crawford’s The Best of Everything, defines the epoch of impossible glamour that surrounded Wolfson as a child. What’s interesting about Wolfson is not the richness of his life as the boy king of Miami Beach: what’s really remarkable is how easy it has been for him to let all that go and embrace contemporary life. No one knows the history of Miami better than Wolfson, but lately he’s more and more enraptured by the brave new world of Miami: “To me, being in Miami now is like being in Berlin: everything has been swept away to build a new city. It’s not better or worse than my childhood memories, just different. Miami is like one of those invented cities, Doha or Singapore or Macao, built on the shards of the last quarter of the 20th century. No one here is indentured to the past.” Ultimately, what separates Wolfson from many moneyed collectors and museum founders is his scholarship. Wolfson didn’t simply write a check to found the Wolfsonian: he spent decades collecting the objects, and under different circumstances he could just as easily work as a curator at the Wolfsonian. Or, failing that, Wolfson could earn a pretty good living as a supremely cultivated and well-born tour guide.

After graduating from Princeton University, Wolfson earned a master’s degree in international relations from the Paul N. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, Bologna. While living in Italy, Wolfson developed a passion for decorative and propaganda art, ceaselessly collecting British, Dutch, German, Japanese, Italian, Celtic and American design objects on his travels. Most of the objects were shipped back to a storage facility on Miami Beach. In 1986, the wilderness years of Miami Beach, he bought the storage facility and used it as the home for the Wolfsonian Foundation, a study center for the collection: that year, he also began publishing The Journal of Decorative and Propaganda Art. In the late 1990s, Wolfson donated his museum building on Washington Avenue and more than 120,000 objects—relating to the material culture of the period between 1885 and 1945—to Florida International University. Since then, the Wolfson collection has been internationally recognized: he’s won a Stewardship of Modernism award from New York’s Russel Wright Design Center and the Premio Rotondi ai salvatori dell’arte: the Rotondi Prize for Art Rescuers. Wolfson is also a member of the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art and the International Council of Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France. At one point, Wolfson traveled the United States in his own private railway cars, but he’s no snob: he’s just as happy when you spring for a cheap lunch in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. Wolfson, who is not prone to nostalgia, seems perfectly content with the transformation of Miami, a city his family helped build: “Miami is not a city that makes judgments. People speculate, they make money, they have fun, and they remain in the vanguard of the contemporary world. But this is a real city: we simply celebrate newness in all its positive aspects. We’ve always had a modern way of life, and the modern age of cities is just catching up to a place where Miami has already been.” ✦
Wolfson Walkabout Micky Wolfson conducts occasional tours of Miami to benefit the Wolfsonian-FIU (wolfsonian.org): his favorite spots in the city encapsulate the best of Miami. CORAL GABLES: “In the 1920s, George Merrick, the founder of Coral Gables, created a series of international villages, including Chinese Village, Dutch South African Village and French Normandy Village. These enclaves of eccentric architecture and, to some extent gimmicks, contribute to the overall identity of Coral Gables as a tropical Arcadia. And the restaurant Old Lisbon in Coral Gables is a favorite of the Portuguese community here.” LITTLE HAVANA: “I always visit Woodlawn Park, which caters to the carriage trade: people like Miami Beach pioneer Carl Fisher and Anastasio Somoza are buried there. And, of course, I never miss King’s Ice Cream, an ice cream shop that looks as if it has been transported from Havana.” OPA LOCKA: “This is another experimental Utopian community built in the 1920s, themed around the Arabian Nights, one more tale in A Thousand and One Tales.” MIAMI SPRINGS: “Another largely unknown community built in the 1920s, with remarkable Pueblo Revival architecture: one hotel went to that health nut, John Harvey Kellogg, who ran the place as the Miami–Battle Creek Sanitarium. KEY BISCAYNE: “The Miami Marine Stadium is a remarkable Modernist icon from the early 1960s: an open-air stadium, created by Hilario Candela and built on the water in Key Biscayne as a speedboat racing venue, it truly defines an evocative moment in Miami.” LITTLE HAITI: “I always enjoy the Little Haiti Cultural Center and Creole food, all the nearby restaurants. Miami is a spectacle to the world, and so we attract people from all over the world, people who want to maintain their identity and still be part of that spectacle.” THE EVERGLADES: “On the Tamiami Trail, just outside Miami, is a great barbecue joint, the Pit. And Everglades City, a town in the middle of the Everglades, is a fun stop on the way to Naples, on the Gulf Coast of Florida.”

The State of East End Real Estate Our experts discuss trends affecting the market out East moderated by Andrew
M. Lieb
H
amptons real estate was electric in 2014. With our distinguished panel of pros, Andrew M. Lieb, Esq., our moderator, helps to bring you home to the Hamptons. In 2014, there was the highest price ever paid for a home in the United States, at $147 million. We watched the Hamptons on TV with Royal Pains; Revenge; Kourtney and Khloe Take the Hamptons; and The Affair. We ate the Hamptons with Dan’s Taste of Summer. Now, we get an inside scoop of buying in the Hamptons from the brokers who make the market. This is Hamptons real estate. AVENUE: How did the real estate industry fare during the past year? JUDI: They were records (for single purchase) but not statistical records, such as in the 2nd quarter of 2007 when nearly a billion dollars traded hands in just three months. In the second quarter of 2007, a billion dollars traded hands in the Hamptons—that was the record! But this was one of the best years we’ve had, and especially since the crash. AVENUE: After a great year in 2014, with the economy up and mortgage rates remaining at record lows, how do you project the Hamptons real estate market for 2015?

Gonzalez
CHRISTINE: It looks to be very good. My Wall Street clients are telling me that bonuses are going to be very good—hopefully, that translates into a great rental season and sales. GEOFF: We are expecting another record year for 2015. Primarily, the Hamptons is a second-home luxury market—when the economy and stock markets are strong, consumers will spend on luxury items. JUDI: I have always said that our Hamptons markets are umbilically connected to the stock market. The Wall Street to Main Street Jitney comes barreling East with great force whenever the stock market does well. 2013 was a banner year for the stock market, so I expected 2014 to be a great year, and it was. And therefore 2015 will not be as fast and furious. But barring an unexpected downturn or catastrophic event, 2015 should continue with a healthy ascent. Another sizable contributing factor is aging baby boomers like myself, looking to invest in vacation and investment properties. AVENUE: It’s clear that Wall Street impacts the Hamptons real estate market, but is Hamptons real estate an indulgence to buy with your Wall Street earnings or, instead, part of your diversified asset portfolio, or both?
THERESA: Hamptons real estate is Hamptons real estate. It is known across the globe as a place to visit and to invest. Every year, we all think the prices can’t get higher, but they keep getting higher. I was born and raised out here and have seen the dramatic changes—in terms of investment, those changes are for the better; Partly because the municipalities restrict building and preserve the land, and partly because of the beauty and cache of the Hamptons which continues to attract people from Hollywood to Wall Street and everywhere in-between. PAUL: 2015 will mirror the stock market. If profits continue then Hamptons real estate will benefit. I think we also have to keep an eye on the market in the city. If buyers perceive the real estate market is slowing down in the city, a similar perception will float down the LIE. VICKY: People have been trading up—from homes in the $1 million to $2 million range to homes in the $2 million to $5 million range. We haven’t seen that in a while. People are feeling more confident. I’ve also been seeing a lot of renovations in my area. When the stock market gets shaky, my customers tend to panic a little at first. But then they realize that the safer place to park their money is the real estate market. With the high-end market, even when the stock market is fluctuating, I feel it doesn’t affect the market in the high end part because people are still spending the money; they have the money; they’re buying. I have more showings on my $14 million listings than I do on my $2 million listings. CODY: The data and current market momentum indicate that 2015 will be another stellar year for Hamptons real estate, especially on the super high end and special properties. Of course the financial markets have a significant correlation to luxury purchases; however, in both upswings and downturns the Hamptons has historically remained a great place to invest in a tangible asset that you can enjoy! ANTHONY: Well, we’re having a record year in terms of business. Our business, our sweet spot, is basically $2 to $5 million. We do sprinkle in a $10, a $15 and a $20 million purchase.
ROUNDTABLE PARTICIPANTS
AVENUE: When you say the sweet spot is $2 to $5 million, who is someone that’s buying a $2 to $5 million place out in the Hamptons today? ANTHONY: We’re seeing young couples, with or without children, with a lot of money, who are purchasing for the first time. And that seems to be the price range they seem to feel comfortable with. First-time purchasers are coming in, mostly Wall Streeters, a lot of people from the entertainment business, attorneys who are coming in and looking. AVENUE: Are they all buying Hamptons real estate for their own use, or are they instead looking to rent out their properties, at least part of the time? Stated otherwise, what is the relationship between the sales market and the rental market that you are experiencing in the Hamptons? ALICE: Our market report found that the rental market was down slightly in 2014 in number of high-end rentals. However, the market was up in dollars. Many past rental customers had bought properties in 2013 and 2014. PAUL: When sales are up, rentals are down, and the reverse is true as well—a function of supply and demand. Why rent when money is as inexpensive as it is currently? 2015 will be a decent rental season—the wonderful houses in great locations will always rent. GEOFF: As the economy continues to rebound we will see more customers enter the market. As sales increased we lost many good rentals, but there is still a lot to choose from, and I would strongly suggest renters start looking early for the 2015 season. CODY: The best rentals go immediately, and they often recur year after year. Thus the best inventory is typically gone before you know it. We saw a lot of long-term renters turn into buyers in 2014. CHRISTINE: A lot of our renters turn out to be buyers at some point.

The Summer 2015 rental season should be great—but that doesn’t mean that we are doing all of the rentals. Clients are now looking to VRBO, Airbnb, et cetera, as a way to find a rental. AVENUE: So, the sharing economy is impacting the real estate rental industry in the Hamptons. How do these websites impact landlords and tenants? Are there risks? ANTHONY: I think, to Christine’s point, there’s going to be continued pressure on the rental market. Airbnb, VRBO—they’re cutting into it. There are risks for the people that use it. We’ve had a number of cases where people will go onto websites, whether it be Halstead or Saunders or Brown Harris. They have the technology savvy to lift pictures. They know the address of the house. They put it on VRBO as if they own the house. And they put an advertisement on VRBO: house for rent. It’s a house that they don’t own. THERESA: I know of people who have arrived with lease in hand and money paid, and it turns out there is no property available. The more that happens, the more the homeowners and tenants will understand the risk of contracting on blind faith and the more they will turn to a company which, at the bare minimum, can ensure that the lease is valid and the money properly paid. In this way, I see the phenomenon as a boon to the real estate industry; why work with a stranger online rather than with a licensed real estate agent? JUDI: What blows my mind is somebody is going to turn the keys over to their $2 million house to a stranger who emailed them. AVENUE: That is scary. Perhaps that is why brokers are licensed in the first place, to protect the public. Shifting topics, but still dealing with trends, there seems to be a trend that the Hamptons’ market is growing west of the Shinnecock Canal. In fact, the New York Times recently called this area “The Hamptons-in-Waiting:” what are your thoughts?
106 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • AVENUE ON THE BEACH • DECEMBER 2014
VICKY: West of the Canal tends to attract a younger demographic— young families. They like the convenience and the fact that they don’t have to travel as much. It also attracts people who have roots in the area. Westhampton is a great shopping street; they have some of the original stores, which is nice; there really are no pop-up stores, so you do have the same merchants who have been in the area a long time, which is great! JUDI: Westhampton Beach, Quogue, Remsenburg and the surrounding markets are of great interest to a certain demographic—people in their twenties, thirties, successful, and interested in getting in and out of the Hamptons quickly and easily. They save one to two hours during prime-time traffic. PAUL: West of the Canal is being rediscovered again due to the perceived values and its proximity to the city. Why add another hour plus to your drive when you can exit off Sunrise Highway and be in Hampton Bays, Quogue or Westhampton Beach with far less agita? GEOFF: There is a definite trend for convenience and lifestyle properties, many are opting for the shorter drive from the city, and they can also buy more with their money. Montauk has experienced record sales this year simply because it is a location and community like no other. AVENUE: You mentioned Montauk: which other areas are like no other? Where should I park my money in the Hamptons? JUDI: Right now, I think the best buy out there is the estate area of East Hampton. Because no matter when you look at history—and the future—the estate areas of East Hampton and Southampton always realize those magic numbers, the 147. ALICE: Southampton, north of the highway, in the $3 million to $4.5 million price range. Customers are beginning to realize the value of going slightly north of the highway, which offers more acreage, yet is still close to town and close enough to the beaches.

PAUL: The areas that are yet overlooked are North Sea in Southampton and parts of East Marion on the North Fork. Both of these areas are ripe for rediscovery. Another area that exploded, which I can’t understand, is North Haven . . . JUDI: Well, everything’s cyclical, and North Haven was beat up for, what, the last nine years? It got to a point where no one wanted to go there because of the deer, because of this, because of that. Now, all of a sudden, if you’re spending $2.5 to $3 million dollars and you’re getting an ahhh house, you go up to North Haven for $2.5 and $3 million and you get a beautiful house. AVENUE: Beyond location, what about architectural features– what’s in? THERESA: The most compelling houses are the really modern structures. And I don’t mean 1970s modern; the new modern house is open, with glass and views and built in tune with the environment—à la Frank Lloyd Wright. It is also green, and people are very conscious of that. ANTHONY: Right now they’re building barn-style houses that take on a very modern look. They’re building homes from the exterior that look more traditional, but once you go inside, it has the clean lines, the very high ceilings. And it’s taking on a very, very modern look. Anecdotally, there are more antiques dealers that are closing shop than ever before. Because that whole style of the 1880s cottage filled with the antiques and the old furniture, is completely out of vogue right now. The other side of it is, new is king. PAUL: Everything now must be new, new, new! That’s what goes off the shelf. AVENUE: Great, but when does new become old? JUDI: The moment you hang curtains.
108 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • AVENUE ON THE BEACH • DECEMBER 2014
AVENUE: Ha-ha. I guess the only feature that doesn’t get old is a waterfront location. CODY: Having sold a significant amount of waterfront, both on and off the ocean, I can confidently say that there is no hotter segment of our market. For special waterfront property, there is certainly much more demand than supply right now. With the record-breaking statistics happening across the board, the waterfront trades bring a new market perspective to the Hamptons as a whole. ALICE: These properties accrue in value much more than almost all others. As each year passes, fewer waterfront properties become available. GEOFF: Many waterfront properties are cost prohibitive for many between Southampton and East Hampton, and there are stunning properties available in Westhampton and the North Fork for a fraction of the price. Waterfront and water view properties will always be in demand; they are generally held longer and inventory is always low. PAUL: Waterfront is and will continue to be the backbone of the real estate industry. The water, be it ocean or bay, is the primary attraction to and for the Hamptons. To own a parcel of oceanfront or waterfront is as close to heaven that anyone of us will get. It’s the blue-chip stock of real estate. AVENUE: Thank you to our panel. With the New Year right around the corner, it’s time to contact these brokers to make your purchase or secure a rental before the 2015 summer season. ✦

A
great tradition of this holiday season is taking a moment to reflect on the things for which we are grateful—most important, those items that are very personal to each of us. On a professional note, the market continues to strengthen. The median price, which measures the middle of the market and is not as impacted as the average price is by the extraordinary high-end sales, rose 3 percent during 2014’s third quarter to $898,500. The average price for all Manhattan apartments, which is greatly impacted by these high-end sales, was 18 percent more than it was a year ago. While this is slightly below the record level of 2014’s first quarter, it is the second highest average price ever. Residential real estate is primarily shelter, our homes. Our good fortune is that because of where we live, our homes continue to be a stable financial asset as well. As professionals—and as owners—we now have the opportunity to remember that, with respect to residential real estate, there is much to be grateful for. Happy Holidays. ✦

n the age of innocence and grandeur of old world New York, Edith Wharton once said, “Set wide the window. Let me drink the day” and 163 East 64th Street is the perfect residence to soak in the historical remnants of this golden age. This magnificent townhouse is a rare gem, a gracious retreat from the city’s fast pace and nestled on one of Manhattan’s premier and distinguished tree-lined Upper East Side Streets. The area is unrivalled on the island of Manhattan and is surrounded by the world’s foremost galleries, museums, fine restaurants and boutiques. Luminaries such as Arthur Schlesinger, Pierre Matisse, the Astors and the Rockefellers have lived in the neighborhood not only for its pastoral beauty but also for its rich history. The current owner, Kenneth D. Laub is the quintessential New Yorker, commercial real estate icon, lyricist and composer. Much of his original music was created in the townhouse and is centered on celebrating the people and places of New York City in hopes to “give a little back to the city that’s been so good to me.” The five-level, handsome Neo-Georgian façade is constructed with raked limestone, red clay brick and protected by a striking electronic wrought iron and limestone enclosure. Masterfully built by renowned Gold Coast architect John G. Prague in 1872, the same year in which the Metropolitan Museum of Art first opened. The sprawling 90-foot parlor floor epitomizes luxury and is graced by lavish interiors, generously proportioned rooms, beautifully-sourced materials and an artisan’s eye for excellence and integrity, along with today’s most advanced technology. The 13 foot gesso ceilings set the stage of grandeur beginning with a living room, perfectly proportioned in size and scale, Louis XIV-style panels adorned with 10 joyful painted canvas inset panels inspired by music and the Fragonard Room of the Frick Museum, marble mantle fireplace and beautiful parquet de Versailles flooring with a geometric border design. A warm intimate library features panels of polished English pine dating back to 1872. Imagine indulging in a book by a warm fireplace with a brandy and a cigar, soaking in the aura and history of New York’s finest. If only these walls could speak of the soirees and after-parties past that took place over the course of 142 years. As you meander through the elegant rooms, be the toast of the town in the formal dining room, grand and impressive with large crown moldings and a Rouge Royale Louis XIV fireplace to host your guests. The Belle-Epoque bar atrium will impress you as well as the Lalique-style “North Wind and Universe” glass ceiling, pour yourself an aperitif and transport back to a period marked by artist salons and bohemian encounters. Moreover store your Chateau Lafites and Margots in a hidden 300-bottle wine cellar, which adds the perfect element for entertaining. This one-of-a-kind home can accommodate your guests and family, whether for quiet relaxation, intimate dinners or largescale gatherings. You will find that this 20-foot-wide elegant home, has been updated with all the modern amenities while maintaining its nostalgic grandeur. Currently the

Stay Healthy This Winter Answers From Your Neighborhood Sports Medicine Expert
Kevin D. Plancher, M.D.
I am young and have been told I have arthritis, what are my options? There are a number of conservative, and when necessary, operative options to help treat knee arthritis. Newer topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) can help to decrease the pain without the gastrointestinal side effects of traditional oral NSAIDs. Activity modification and weight reduction also help limit the stress on the knee joint. Physical therapy can help decrease pain, increase joint function, and strengthen the musculature surrounding the knee joint. Hyaluronic acid injections help to decrease inflammation in lieu of cortisone injections. Promising, new research shows that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell injections may delay and possibly restore cartilage damage. Many new surgical procedures for cartilage injuries can be considered when conservative options have been exhausted. Visit your orthopaedic sports medicine specialist to decide which procedure may be best for you. There are many options to get you back to all of the activities you love to do. It’s almost ski and snowboard season; what steps can I take to reduce injuries at the resort? There are simple steps to reduce injuries while on the slopes. First, make sure you are fit and healthy before your trip. Strong hips and core are essential to control the side-to-side movements to control your skis. Make sure you incorporate these muscles into your gym program. “Get your bearings” before taking to the slopes. Even if you have been to a resort in the past, review the trail maps, locations of first aid stations, and location of the main lodge. Not knowing this information can cause you and others further injury. If injured midrun, you need to recognize that you are injured, and seek medical attention as quickly as possible. If you continue down the mountain while injured, you pose a threat not only to yourself, but to other enthusiasts. If you are sore or injured after a long day on the slopes, remember to RICE (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate). Ice application should be in 30-minute intervals for three hours.
“There are many options to get you back to all of the activities you love to do.” If swelling and pain remain the same or worsen seek expert advice from an orthopaedic sports medicine physician. He or she knows current treatment options for common skiing injuries, including ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), MCL (medial collateral ligament), and medial meniscus injuries, and will get you back on the slopes as quickly and safely as possible.
weights, use a mirror to assess your form. Keep your hands where you can see them, don’t let them go outside of your peripheral vision. If you are unsure whether you are doing an exercise correctly, seek advice from a certified personal trainer. Stay safe, Stay active, and Stay healthy in 2015. ✦
The New Year is fast approaching, and I want to get back in shape; how do I stay safe at the gym? Whether it’s your first time at the gym or you’re a workout fanatic, you should focus on larger muscle groups, rather than individual muscles. Key muscle groups include your hip extensors (e.g. gluteal muscles), quadriceps, hamstrings, chest, and back. Incorporation of whole body exercises and core musculature is also key for good posture and form. Prior to your workout, you should always warm-up the muscles you plan on working out to minimize the risk of injury. A 5-10 minute warm-up such as the treadmill, elliptical, or stationary bike can help get your heart rate up and increase blood flow to the muscles to be worked. Working out is not only getting strong, but it is also crucial to maintain flexibility in all joints. Additionally, you should gradually build-up to your target weight to avoid muscle strains or a lower back injury. When using free

STAGING TO SELL Hollywood’s home staging star opens her doors in New York and Miami
M
eridith Baer is America’s undisputed queen of home staging. She is the go-to woman for Hollywood’s elite, with a client list including Robert De Niro, Katy Perry, Brad Pitt, Christina Aguilera, and Gwyneth Paltrow. When homeowners and realtors want to sell a house faster and for top dollar, they use her philosophy and staging tips to sell the lifestyle buyers want. Her recent staging projects in the Hamptons created a bidding war and sold in five days to an all-cash offer. Her New York properties usually sell within 30 days. Meridith Baer Home recently expanded to Miami and New York, specializing in every decorating style: transitional, modern, traditional, European, coastal and more.
What is the easiest way to give my home a fresh new look for 2015? White walls, period. White makes everything look new and also makes rooms look bigger. Then you add in color with your furniture and accessories. Plus, there are a plethora of white shades to choose from, but my favorites are Glass of Milk by Sherwin Williams and Perfect White by Restoration Hardware. How do you avoid chaos when mixing and matching prints in a room? The key is to do different patterns in the same colors. For example, I like to do black-and-white stripes, black-and-white zigzags, black-and-white zebra, and then solid white and solid black.
Meridith Baer, Interior Designer and Home Stager
Is staging the outside of a home important for a sale? Staging the outdoors is very important. We focus on creating beautiful vignettes outside every window for homeowners to see everyday. ✦

A Taste for Fine Living Introducing One West End: the ultimate residence for foodies
N
ew York City, the quintessential foodie destination, is anticipating the arrival of a new condominium set to cater to the world’s foremost tastemakers. Elad Group and Silverstein Properties have teamed together to develop One West End, a residential enclave that sits at the gateway of Riverside Center. The first condominium property of the five-building Christian de Portzamparc master plan, One West End, is located in one of Manhattan’s most sought after zip codes. Standing 42 stories tall with 246 residences, this will be the tallest building at Riverside Center. “One West End will introduce an impeccably designed condo with a culinary experience for all of our residents and New Yorkers to enjoy,” said Larry Silverstein, Chairman of Silverstein Properties. Samantha Sax, Executive Vice President, Elad Group adds, “One West End is the ultimate foodie destination from top to bottom. It is a game changer for the neighborhood and a very exciting one at that!” An award-winning team of designers and architects have been commissioned to fulfill the building’s design intent—a philosophy that affords a resort lifestyle with hotel like design and amenities. Renowned architecture firm Pelli Clarke Pelli skillfully crafted One West End’s commanding exterior, which boasts a distinctive limestone base topped by a glass façade with metal detailing that showcases a cantilevered atrium. Restaurant and hotel visionary Jeffrey Beers conceived the apartment interiors, the amenity spaces and the condominium’s culinary retail destination. Beers, an international icon in the luxury hospitality industry has designed efficient, airy apartments that are complemented by breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and the surrounding rivers. These well-crafted residences have been equipped with innovative open and closed kitchens that are the epicenter of the home. Offered in two distinctive finish packages, the custom-designed kitchens feature recessed storage niches enriched by fully integrated appliances that are adorned by imported marble slab counter tops and backsplashes. “Designing a hotel is about welcoming a guest from your first step into the lobby to your room. We have taken the concept of hospitality and translated it into a home welcoming the resident from Curbside to pillow,” said Jeffrey Beers, Principal and Founder, Jeffrey Beers International.

Jeffrey Beers brings an intimate knowledge of entertaining and hospitality to the design of One West End’s amenities. The capacious amenity levels offer seamlessly integrated indoor and outdoor spaces for entertainment, fitness and relaxation. This impressive suite of resort inspired highlights includes a stunning 75 foot swimming pool encased within the double height cantilevered atrium, a state of the art fitness center and a host of grand-scaled, connecting entertainment spaces that double as venues for private events or areas for leisurely relaxation. The entertainment spaces include a chef’s kitchen with adjacent dining room, a living room with a gas-burning fireplace, a media room equipped with large screen TVs, a neighboring billiards room, a playroom and a high-tech gaming room. These distinctive spaces are topped by a 12,000 square foot landscaped outdoor terrace complete with private cabanas, numerous lounge chairs, BBQ grills and an area for private outdoor dining. Not only does One West End offer world class amenities and outstanding apartments outfitted with kitchens suitable for an iron chef, another aspect of its allure is undoubtedly the plan for a 25,000 square foot retail culinary marketplace. This convenient retail amenity validates the luxury, resort philosophy that is so apparent in the condominium’s design sensibilities. And with Jeffrey Beers leading the charge it promises to be filled with elements that will appeal to discerning foodies worldwide. Though Elad and Silverstein aren’t confirming all the details of this culinary destination just yet, their excitement about its arrival is palpable. We imagine that you will be rushing to this food emporium to get a bite out of this irresistible culinary experience whether you’re a resident of One West End or an eager foodie. And with easy accessibility to and from some of Manhattan’s largest business districts and landmark institutions you will be able to partake in delightful fare and be on your way in less than a New York minute! A marketplace at your doorstep, a level of service likened to that of a five star hotel and airy apartments with both river and city views – One West End comes to market this winter offering a range of one- to four-bedroom residences with pricing starting at $1.3 million to over $20 million. This residential community is the new destination for sophisticated New Yorkers and trendsetters worldwide looking for great value blended into a delightful package. Bon appetite! ARTFUL ADVENTURES Nadja Swarovski, the crystal and gem scion, shares her Miami experiences and inspiration
Swarovski Impact
December is one of the best times to visit Miami—the city is absolutely buzzing, especially during the first week, when Design Miami and Art Basel Miami are taking place. I’m particularly excited, since Swarovski will once again be showcasing its latest design collaboration “Thinning Ice” with award-winning architect Jeanne Gang and Emmy–winning filmmaker and National Geographic photographer James Balog. The project focuses on the melting polar ice cap and highlights the importance of sustaining our environment for future generations, work that we find very important.
New York migration
There is always someone to bump into in Miami, especially during the Design and Art fairs. It’s as if New York City escapes for the week and travels south to celebrate the world of design.
NADJA SWAROVSKI has Austrian roots; was born in Germany; has lived in Texas, New York, Hong Kong and currently resides in London, but there is nowhere else she would ever be other than Miami during Art Basel and Design Miami. Here, she tells us why this is such a special time, what she loves about Miami and what Swarovski (her family’s company, of which she is an executive board member) will be showcasing this year.

Miami’s de la Cruz Collection has wonderful exhibits and style and is in a great location. Their support of local artists is incredibly inspiring, and I always take pleasure in seeing something new when I visit [the gallery].

HRH Princess Michael of Kent Kent, whose husband, Prince Michael, is a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth, was feted by her friends Audrey and Martin Gruss at the “21” Club. One of the royal family’s wittiest members, the princess is an accomplished historian, writer and lecturer. Her new book, The Queen of Four Kingdoms, fictionalizes the details of England’s invasion of France in the 15th century and the king of Aragon’s quest to marry his daughter Yolande to Duke Louis II of Anjou in Provence. “The history in the book is all true. All I have invented is the dialogue, dress, decorations, dogs, servants and spies. They surely had them all,” said the princess, who told me that she was related to all the book’s main characters, thus I’m sure she’ll be forgiven by her forebears for the poetic license she takes on the battlefield and in the ballroom and boudoir. N’est-ce pas? The princess also confided that she is working with Julian Fellowes, who writes Downton Abbey, to turn her trilogy into a miniseries. Fellowes says of the tome, “Princess Michael writes of lives wrapped in gilded velvet but drenched in ambition and blood.” I can wait if you can. “A book signed is a book sold,” said the practical princess as she inscribed them to Nina Griscom, Eric Javits, Elizabeth Kabler, Chuck Scarborough, CeCe and Lee Black, Mary McFadden, Geoffrey Bradfield, Cassandra Seidenfeld, Margo Langenberg, Alex Donner, Lady Liliana Cavendish, Billy Morrissey, Lisa Jackson, and Somers and Jonathan Farkas. During cocktails, the princess humorously relayed a few of the gory historical details in the book and talked about the madness of King Charles VI. When she explained “the king didn’t start off mad,” Kenneth Jay Lane quipped, “Neither did I.” The evening benefited the Hope for Depression Research Foundation. hopefordepression.org
THE WHITE PALACE
“It is not the title that makes a person, but the time they take to make a difference,” said HRH Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia as her husband, HRH Crown Prince Alexander, looked on proudly. The couple, who live in the legendary White Palace in Belgrade, will become the king and queen of Serbia if the monarchists regain control of the country. They were in town for Lifeline New York’s annual luncheon at Le Cirque, which was hosted by board members, including Susan Gutfreund, Cheri Kaufman and David Hryck. On hand were their highnesses’ cousin HRH Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, Lady Lully Gibbons, Alison Andrews, Kyle Wool, Della Rounick, Bill Slight, Karen Klopp, Daniela Celikovic, Zoran Gusic, Gordana Barac, Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Metropolitan Opera star Željko Lučić who performed. “Suffering knows no boundaries,“ observed the ever-charming Prince Alexander, who is a godson

HEARST CASTLE
Media king William Randolph Hearst built San Simeon, also known as Hearst Castle, as a private retreat in 1919 on a hill in California overlooking the Pacific. Here he entertained Hollywood royalty, including his mistress, film star Marion Davies, as well as Cary Grant, Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable and Winston Churchill.Today millions of people come every year to view the castle’s architectural wonders, its manicured grounds and its 25,000 priceless artifacts; only Disneyland receives more visitors. WRH’s granddaughter Anne Hearst McInerney, and her husband, Jay McInerney, hosted the sixth annual Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation Benefit Weekend to help preserve and restore its treasures. Only 80 guests were invited to the glittering masquerade ball that began the festivities, as this is the exact number that could be seated in the Refectory for the elaborate banquet celebrating the castle’s golden age. Stilt walkers, jugglers and actors dressed in elaborate Venetian-style costumes entertained the masked guests, who included Anne’s son Randy Harris, Amanda Hearst, Gillian Hearst Simonds, Paula and Tony Peck, George Farias, Sylvia and Alison Mazzola, Jamie Figg, Wendy Stark, Natalie and James Bloomingdale, Edith and Joseph Tobin II, James Coleman and Cynthia Ott, Robert and Justine Bloomingdale, Zoe Bullock, Kick Kennedy, Robert Kennedy III, Irina and Stefan Hearst and others of that ilk and stripe. hearstcastle.org 142 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • AVENUE ON THE BEACH • DECEMBER 2014
THE TEMPLE OF DENDUR
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute unveiled “Death Becomes Her: A Century of Mourning Attire” in the Anna Wintour Costume Center followed by a party in the Temple of Dendur. The show explores the evolution of mourning clothes from 1815 to 1915. Surprisingly, this included a stunning sequined lavender evening gown glamorous enough for Gwyneth Paltrow to wear. In fact, it was worn by Queen Alexandra when in half-mourning for Queen Victoria in 1902. The exhibit directed by Harold Koda and curated by Jessica Regan is on view through February 1st. While at the Met, don’t miss Leonard Lauder’s breathtaking billion-dollar collection of cubist paintings that he has donated to the museum and the “Treasures from India” exhibit featuring the jewels of the Maharajas. metmuseum.org
THE FAIREST OF THEM ALL
Elisabeth Thieriot, whose family founded the San Francisco Chronicle, launched her Replete Skincare collection at the Fairmont Hotel. Thieriot said, “After you take your clothes off, your skin is all you have. It should be treated with as much care as any couture dress.” The evening featured a fashion show by Parisian designers Livia Stoianova and Yassen Samouilov of On Aura Tout Vu and American couturier Mimi Tran. repleteskincare.com Designer Josie Natori presented her elegant new collection of lingerie alongside her new perfume JOSIE at Bloomingdales. Natori said, “Fragrance and lingerie are the same as you wear both next to your skin. It’s personal and emotional, and you should have the same desire for both.” natori.com ✦

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MIAMI MOMENT? A tie: the 50th birthday party my fiancée Jackie Soffer threw for me last year—it brought together my family and closest friends, and made me realize how lucky I am; when Alpha Blondy played in the Cameo Theater in South Beach in 1990; and the first year of Art Basel in Miami Beach. WAS THERE A CAREER MILESTONE OR MOMENT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR YOU? The purchase of my first little Art Deco property on South Beach, when I realized that buildings with great architecture were like sculptures. IF YOUR APARTMENT WERE ON FIRE, WHICH Joseph Beuy s THREE THINGS WOULD YOU RESCUE? My family, the dog and a Joseph Beuys sculpture. DO YOU HAVE A RECURRING DREAM? I used to dream that the test was coming up in school and I was not prepared. Then the dream morphed into the same situation, but suddenly I realized that I did not need to prepare; I was past that and could just read the questions and figure out the answers. WHERE IS PARADISE FOR YOU? With family in the wilderness.
