The Rug Company - Studio Collection No.1

THE RUG COMPANY Studio Collection

The history of rug weaving is a tale of nomadic travel, blazing suns, blistering winds, star filled nights, bustling souks, audacious traders, the telling of stories and the fading of dreams. We have never held the view that the only thing that distinguishes a desirable rug is the complexity of its design or intricacy of its weaving. We do however know that what makes an exceptional rug is the quality of the materials, the skill of the weaver, the vision of the designer and this is the story of The Rug Company’s ‘Studio Collection’

dhurries

From its modest origins the Indian Durrie has been used for centuries as a decorative floor covering, hung on walls and laid over furniture in village homes and Maharajas palaces. Durries only improve with use and age, colours soften and the woven cotton becomes supple and pliable. They are wonderfully simple to both decorate and live with and then, when it’s time to move home, it’s good to remember, nomads always take their rugs.

hand knotted

Using thick hand spun wool that comes from giddy altitudes high on the Tibetan plateau before being washed in the icy rivers that flow from the Himalayas these knotted rugs are then woven in Nepal by craftsmen so adept that the clarity and simplicity of the design is a masterful rendition. Each finished piece requires the hand of fifteen craftsmen and by the nature of their creation every one is unique.

BAMBOO IKATS

Ikat is a dying technique often applied to silk fabrics, the result is a wonderful infusion of design and colour. Our collection of Ikat rugs are woven using fiber that is taken from the bamboo plant that has an appearance very similar to silk. The effect is superb and softens the transition of the different elements of the design. These are rugs that are easy to use and look fabulous just about anywhere.
