Men’s soccer players earned USA South Academic All-Conference honors in 2011-12 under head coach Ed Goodhines

Averett men’s soccer senior John Thrower is one of several Averett players who define the term “student-athlete” at Averett. In his first three years at Averett, Thrower has received USA South Academic All-Conference recognition. In order to earn Acadmic All-Conference recognition, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.00 GPA in each semester of the school year. Thrower, a three-time USA South All-Conference First Team performer, also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team for District 3 in the College Division and is under consideration again this season.

The Office of Student Success, located in the Galesi Family Student Success Center, offers free academic support to Averett’s more than 300 student-athletes, as well as other members of the campus community. In accordance with Averett’s mission statement, we are here to help you achieve your “big dreams” in order for you to fulfill your “bold future.” Our counselors offer confidential, personable service in person. Our aim is to help with general learning skills and offer individualized tutoring for almost every course. We also provide assistance and accommodations for student-athletes with learning disabilities. The center offers group study nights for math, the sciences and sociology. In addition, we can help you prepare for standardized tests, such as the GRE or Praxis. Finally, we also proctor some exams and the director oversees CLEP exams.

TUTORING PROGRAMS Averett’s Office of Student Success offers individual assistance to students for any class or project. Individual tutoring sessions may be scheduled by appointments and the center also offers walk-in study group sessions at scheduled times each week.

STUDY HALL Averett’s Department of Athletics requires all freshmen to participate in study hall each week to ensure that all first-year students have an opportunity to begin their academic careers on the right foot. The study hall program also is made available to any student-athlete who may require additional academic support during their time at Averett.

LEARNING DISABILITY SERVICES The Office of Student Success works with special needs students who require classroom and testing

CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM Averett University and the Department of Athletics encourage student-athletes to take part in the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success). Averett offers various workshops and activities throughout the academic school year to promote student-athletes’ ownership of their academic, athletic, career, personal and community responsibilities. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program assists student-athletes in identifying and applying transferable skills and encourages the development of character, integrity and leadership skills.

WRITING CENTER Averett’s Writing Center works one-on-one with student-athletes to help them make their writing more vibrant, clear and effective. TRADITION & PHILOSOPHY

Averett University’s men’s soccer program is rich in history and tradition. With success dating back to the program’s early days in the late 1970s, the Averett men’s soccer team has won three conference championships and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. The program has also produced a number of individual honors such as All-Americans and regional awards, in addition to countless all-conference selections. While the program’s past has certainly been memorable, current head coach Ed Goodhines continues to look to the future. After taking over the program in 2008, Goodhines has put Averett men’s soccer back into the spotlight and has the Cougars contending for the USA South Conference title once again.

AVERETT ATHLETICS OVERVIEW

The men’s soccer team stands tall on three pillars. The first of them is family, and the tight-knit Averett family mindset is none more apparent than on the men’s soccer team. By the time a player’s four years have come to an end, his family has grown to include not only his four years of teammates, but also his coaching staff, fans, professors, members of the community and countless others who will have a profound effect on him throughout his collegiate career. Having brothers located all over the world is something that most people will never experience, and one that the coaching staff spotlights in the management of the program.

Baseball Averett’s baseball team, which began play in 1997, has been an annual contender in one of the toughest DIII conferences in the country. The Cougars won the 2003 USA South championship and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. The program has produced several All-Americans and pro draft picks. Men’s Basketball The Averett men’s basketball program enjoyed four consecutive conference championship seasons (three regular season and three tournament), as well as three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths from 2007-2009 and four total as a program. The program has also produced multiple All-Americans. Women’s Basketball The Averett women’s basketball program has risen to the top half of the conference in recent years. The Cougars have four straight 11-win seasons.

WORK ETHIC The second pillar of the men’s soccer program is work ethic. A culture of hard-work is ever-present in the men’s soccer program, and 10 minutes at any training session or team meeting makes that apparent. As intense athletes on the field, studious students in the classroom, and proactive members in the community, members of the Averett men’s soccer team leave college ready to lead by example.

SUCCESS The final pillar of the men’s soccer team is success. Players on the men’s soccer team take pride in rejecting excuses and refusing to settle for anything other than goal-achieve-

The ability to find creative solutions to problems is an essential skill that players transfer from the playing field into their personal lives, and as a result alumni are able to take ownership of their success. Men’s soccer alumni are continually checking-in with stories of success, and the trend shows no signs of slowing.

Football The Averett football team has claimed one conference championship, produced more than 100 all-conference performers and numerous professional players despite its young existence (program began play in 2000). Men’s Golf The men’s golf program at Averett boasts the 2003 Division III NCAA national championship and has made three NCAA appearances as a team. Women’s Soccer The women’s soccer team has become a contender in the USA South Conference after reaching the tournament championship game for the first time in 2010. Softball The softball program, winner of one conference regular season title and one tournament championship, has back-to-back 20win seasons. Men’s Tennis The men’s tennis program has a history of success, ranging from 11 conference championships to numerous All-Americans. Women’s Tennis The women’s tennis program has claimed six conference championships and produced several individual award-winners. Women’s Volleyball The Averett women’s volleyball team is one of the most successful programs in the region. The Cougars have won 13 conference titles, made four NCAA appearances and have totaled numerous individual conference awards.

The Cougar Den

The Cougar Den is the home field for the Averett soccer and football teams. With a natural grass playing surface, the Cougar Den is located at Averett’s North Campus. The facility features a two-level press box, scoreboard and seats more than 2,500 faithful Cougar fans during games.

The Grant Center arena houses the main court used by the Averett volleyball team. Retractable bleachers that seat more than 1,500 fans surround the main court and may be retracted to expose an additional two courts that can be utilized for warmups or additional teams during tournament play/ The arena also houses the volleyball locker rooms, weight room and athletic training room. The Grant Center also hosts Averett’s graduation ceremonies, concerts and other sporting events such as the Harlem Globetrotters (as seen at right).

NORTH CAMPUS FACILITIES The E. Stuart James Grant Convocation and Athletic Center and North Campus Athletics Facility were opened in the fall of 1998. It is a 55,863-square-foot facility that houses offices for all of Averett’s coaching and administrative staff members. Located in the Grant Center, the main athletics complex, are classrooms used by Averett’s physical education department, six home and six visitor locker areas, an athletic training room used for treatments of all athletes, and a fitness room accessible by all Averett students, faculty and staff. The grounds surrounding the Grant Center include five fields used by all of the outdoor sports for practice and play. Football and men’s and women’s soccer use the Cougar Den, a natural grass field adjacent to the football field house and press box. The stadium seats more than 2,500 faithful Cougar fans and also boasts a two-story press box, which can accommodate up to 30 media representatives and game day personnel. The 7,830-square-foot football field house is the home to offices for all of the football coaching staff, as well as a separate locker room for the football players. There is also a weight room for strength training and as many as four film-study rooms can be utilized at one time by the football team for game preparation. In addition to the Cougar Den, Averett’s baseball team plays and practices on its own 2.75 acre OwenFulton Field. The field is a pitcher’s ballpark, with 410 feet between the plate and the center-field wall, and has stands for fans, batting cages, and its own press box. The Averett softball team practices and plays on the one-acre Cougar Field, which is adjacent to

Completing the North Campus facility are two practice fields on each side of the Cougar Den for the soccer and football teams. The North Campus Facility is one of the premiere

athletic venues in Division III. Averett’s tennis facility is currently located on the school’s Main Campus. The venue features six outdoor tennis courts where both the men’s and women’s tennis teams compete and practice. The courts are also open to the Averett and Danville community.

Averett University Athletics is committed to giving back to both the campus and surrounding Danville community. By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams as well as individual student-athletes are involved in numerous charity and community organizations and events. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects and activities in the community. The Averett men’s soccer team has done a number of events to help serve the community. The team hosted a one-day clinic for the Southside Soccer Club where dozens of young players came out to learn the game from college-level coaches. During the holiday season the men’s soccer team raised enough money to sponsor a family in need. The money that was raised helped the family to enjoy a Christmas dinner and afford presents to open on Christmas morning. In addition to sponsoring the family, the men also raised nearly $150 for Food for the Poor, the largest international relief and development organization in the nation. The members of the men’s soccer team also teamed up with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during Halloween to collect cans and non-perishables. The “Can-oween” event collected over 500 cans for donation to needy charities around the area. As a whole, Averett University teamed up with the rest of the schools in the USA South Conference for an annual food drive during the fall. Averett collected canned goods and non-perishable items and delivered them to God’s Storehouse in Danville just before Thanksgiving. Averett University donates nearly 2,000 canned goods as a part of the USA South’s Cans Across the Conference each year. Across the conference, 51,248 cans and other items were collected by the league’s schools in 2011, which was the seventh year of the can drive. The event was created by the members of the USA South Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in order to help those in need around the holiday season. ORGANIZATIONS AVERETT TEAMS UP WITH

Big Brothers Big Sisters: Numerous Averett student-athletes work with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville to reach out to the city’s youth. Averett studentathletes mentor area kids and once a week they eat lunch at school with their “little.” Averett teams also invite the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization to group outings at games. Cancer Awareness: Each year, Averett teams and student-athletes promote cancer awareness. In addition to the volleyball program’s “Dig Pink” game, other Averett teams also get involved, such as football, which also wears pink wristbands and tape during select games in October. Habitat For Humanity: Averett student-athletes and coaches give back to the community throughout the school year. Many teams coordinate with the local

Habitat For Humanity efforts. Teams work on numerous Habitat house in the Danville area. Pennies for a Purpose: In an effort to help worthy organizations during the spring semester, the USA South Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed “Pennies for a Purpose” in 2008. This community service initiative has raised more than $19,000 for local organizations. Averett has donated its collections in the past for such things such as earthquake relief in Haiti. Youth Camps/Outreach: Averett student-athletes enjoy reaching out to kids in the Danville area. Several teams hold youth clinics throughout the school year and encourage kids to come and learn new skills and techniques. Other teams also act as positive role models through various activities such as talking to kids in area schools or working with local youth sports organizations.

Ed Goodhines HEAD COACH Since taking over as head coach at Averett in 2008, Ed Goodhines has turned the Cougars into the up-and-coming program in the USA South Conference. Goodhines has guided Averett to three consecutive 10win seasons and three USA South Tournament semifinals appearances in a row. In 2011, the Cougars finished 11-6-2 after going 12-6-2 in 2010. Goodhines’ 2009 squad went 10-7-1, a nine-game improvement from the prevous season. That 2009 squad earned the right to host a USA South Conference Tournament quarterfinals game for the first time in program history. Averett achieved another first, winning its quarterfinal matchup to advance to the tournament semifinals. In his four seasons at Averett, Goodhines has produced 18 all-conference performers, including six first team selections. In 2010, he had seven all-conference selections, including the USA South Conference Rookie of the Year. Goodhines’ overall record at Averett is 34-31-5, including a 33-19-5 mark over the past three seasons. Off the field, his teams have been just as successful. His players have been very

active in community service efforts that include donation drives for Haiti earthquake relief and others who are less fortunate, as well as free clinics for area youth soccer players. His student-athletes have also been successful in the classroom. Several of his players have earned USA South Academic All-Conference honors and one player was named to the 2011 Academic All-District Team. A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Goodhines coached for 17 seasons at Division II Long Island University-Southampton, his alma mater. He served as the head coach of the women’s team from 1983-1991 and guided the men’s program from 1992-2000. Goodhines led the Colonials men’s soccer team to three consecutive New York Collegiate Athletic Conference titles from 1998-2000. His 1999 squad, which was ranked fifth nationally, posted a 16-0-1 record during the regular season and suffered the season’s only loss in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament. That setback was a 3-2 loss to Southern Connecticut State University, the eventual national champion, in four overtimes. In addition to his team’s field accomplishments, Goodhines’

1999 team held the country’s highest team GPA at the Division II level. Goodhines guided the Southampton men to seven consecutive top-25 rankings from 1994-2000. He garnered NYCAC Conference Coach of the Year honors three consecutive seasons, from 1998-2000. Additionally, he was named the 1999 NSCAA Northeast Region Coach of the year. While leading the Lady Colonials from 1983-1991, Goodhines led them to six national top-25 rankings. In 1990, after leading Southampton to an ECAC Division II Championship he was named the NSCAA Northeast Region Coach of the Year. In total, Goodhines helped develop seven All-Americans at Southampton, four on the men’s team and three on the women’s. Following his tenure at LIU-Southampton, Goodhines served as the director of athletics and head boys soccer coach at Fredericksburg Academy in Fredericksburg, Va. Goodhines graduated from LIU-Southampton in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. In 1998, he earned a master’s degree in sports administration.

Danny Nadel joined the Averett men’s and women’s soccer programs as an assistant coach in June 2010. Nadel came to the Cougars after a highly successful two-year stint as the assistant coach at Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury, Conn. In that two-year period, Nadel helped to guide a struggling program that counted a total of four wins in the two seasons prior to his arrival all the way to the state quarterfinals. A 2008 graduate of Post University, Nadel played four seasons for the Division II Eagles’ men’s soccer team. Nadel was a four-year starter, logging more than 3,555 minutes in goal. He finished his career with a .750 save percentage. In 2008, he helped his team win the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship as the team captain and was consistently ranked nationally in the top 25 for saves, save percentage and goals against average. In addition to playing, Nadel gained coaching experience while serving as an instructor at various youth summer soccer camps in the New England from 2001-2005. The Farmington, Conn., native earned his bachelor’s degree in English in December 2008. Nadel earned Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference All-Academic Team honors all four years. Nadel currently has licenses and diplomas from both the NSCAA and USSF. In addition to coaching, he earned his MBA from Averett in 2012.

Wilson Assistant Coach l Second Season Middlesborough, England l Milligan (‘10)

Philip Wilson joined the Averett men’s soccer staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2011 season. He graduated in 2010 from Milligan College, where he played four seasons and was a two-time team captain. He received numerous accolades, including All-America Honorable Mention, First Team All-Region, First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Conference. A native of Middlesborough, England, Wilson also played semi-pro in England for Billingham Town FC from 2004-06, in addition to playing for Cleveland County. He also spent three summers playing in the Professional Development eLague (USA) for the Carolina Railhawks (Raleigh, N.C.). His soccer coaching experience includes working summer camps for the Carolina Railhawks (USL), Duke University and Triangle Futbol Club. Wilson also spent three months working for Premier UK in North Carolina. Wilson graduated from Milligan with a bachelor’s of science degree in human performance and exercise science with a emphasis in sports management. He also earned a Football Association Level 1 certification and a Premier Skills Practice Play diploma.

Steve Hajdas is in his second year at Averett. Hajdas previously served as the head trainer at Mountain State University. A native of Toms River, N.J., Hajdas received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida in 2008 and earned his master’s degree from Marshall University in 2010. Prior to his work at Mountain State, Hajdas also served as a trainer at Marshall and at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Hajdas has been a certified athletic trainer since 2008 and also received certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Performance Enhancement Specialist and a Corrective Exercise Specialist.

Thomas Underwood is in his second year as Averett’s Assistant Athletic Trainer. Underwood was hired in September 2011 after spending the previous year working at Guilford Orthopaedic Clinic in Greensboro, N.C. Thomas is a graduate of Averett University with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. While at Averett as a student, Thomas worked with the football, baseball and men’s soccer teams. He also had the opportunity to intern with the Green Bay Packers in the summer of 2008. He currently resides in Danville with his wife, Jennifer, and their son, Colton.

Alex Grandia was hired as Averett’s Intern Athletic Trainer in July 2012. A native of Albuquerque, N.M., Alex graduated in May of 2012 from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelors of Science degree in Athletic Training. Throughout her time as an undergrad, Alex worked with the various Division I sports at New Mexico.

Dr. Tiffany M. Franks Averett University President Dr. Tiffany McKillip Franks became the President of Averett University on July 1, 2008. Through her collaborative, high energy, interpersonal leadership style, Averett has embarked on an exciting voyage of change and growth. The University is a place where big dreams can become bold futures. Averett is in the midst of exciting growth, experiencing record new student enrollment. Averett is ranked as a top tier regional college in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2011. With the first-hand knowledge she gained through conversations with constituents, Dr. Franks and her leadership team are laying the groundwork for a strategic plan and major giving campaign that will grow Averett to becoming a premier higher education leader in Southern Virginia. With 24 years of senior-level administrative experience in higher education that began when she was 23 as the dean of students, Franks’ leadership style and problem-solving expertise has led her through leadership roles in admissions, financial aid, student life, marketing and communications, public relations and fundraising. Before taking the helm at Averett, she served as the Executive Vice President at Greensboro College in North Carolina. Franks earned her BA from Ohio Dominican University; a Master’s of Science in Education from The Ohio State University; and her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in Higher Education Management. Franks sees Averett’s role as a community building one and she currently serves on the board of directors for the Future of the Piedmont, the Danville Pittsylvania Chamber of Commerce, The Boys and Girls Club, and the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. Franks is the Chair of the Smart Beginnings Leadership Council of Danville Pittsylvania County and is member of the Rotary Club of Danville and the Wednesday Club. She is married to Joe Franks who is a high school teacher, head men’s and women’s golf coach at Grimsley High School, and the assistant director of the North Carolina Coaches Association.

One of the oldest Division III conferences in the nation, the USA South Conference was born as the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1963 when six institutions with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined as founding members. Those colleges were Charlotte College (now UNC-Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College (now Methodist University), North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Lynchburg College. The basis for the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, and thus no athletically awarded financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. That philosophy still exists today. In February 2003, it was announced that the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would change its name to the USA South Athletic Conference. The name change was made official on July 1, 2003, and the first USA South Athletic Conference championships were awarded in the fall of 2003. The Conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time, the NCAA divided into three legislative and competitive divisions, with Division III allowing membership for nonathletic scholarship institutions only. The Dixie joined the NCAA, and in so doing, became one of the first conferences accepted into Division III. Since the inception of Division III, the USA South has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding regional and national reputation in a number of sports. The Conference sponsored athletic programs for men only until 1981. In that year, the NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s sports, and the Dixie followed that lead by including women’s sports. The Conference now sponsors championships in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer,

women’s volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, golf and women’s lacrosse for a total of 14 sports. Presently, the Conference features 13 institutions, four in Virginia, five in North Carolina, three in Georgia and one in Tennessee. Averett University, Christopher Newport University, Ferrum College, Greensboro College, LaGrange College, Mary Baldwin College, Maryville College, Meredith College, Piedmont College and William Peace University have joined Methodist and N.C. Wesleyan and make up today’s conference full-time membership. Maryville became a competing member of the Conference in the fall of 2005 as a football only member and joins the conference as a full-time member in 2012-13, along with LaGrange and Piedmont. Agnes Scott College compete in women’s lacrosse only. The USA South announced in May 2012 that Covenant College and Huntingdon College will join the conference in 2013-14. Christopher Newport is leaving the USA South following 2012-13 in all sports except football.
