WHY AVERETT? 1. QUALITY EDUCATION

A quality education and the student experience is priority No. 1 and evident every day. This university is: l Faithful in supporting each student while challenging them to give and be his or her best. l Devoted to small classes taught by highly qualified and attentive professors. l Loyal in our academic philosophy, which is centered on student learning, experience and success. l Focused on the small-college experience within a close, safe and caring community. l Dedicated to rigorous academics that will graduate students of ability and conviction. l Committed to a rich student life of athletics, student clubs and activities and performing arts. l Attentive to improving the student experience with a focus on personal attention and excellence of services and resources. l Steadfast in maintaining our high graduate placement rates into jobs and graduate schools.

2. AFFORDABILITY

A college education is expensive … we don’t have to tell you that. But it should not be out of reach! Averett makes a quality education affordable by: l Awarding approximately $20 million in total in financial aid and scholarships to our students (our spending on financial aid has increased three times faster than our spending on operating expenses over the past decade). l Generously giving financial aid to 99% of our full-time undergraduate students and by designing scholarship packages that lower the cost of attending by almost 40% for most students. No student pays the full cost to attend Averett. l Soliciting financial supporters of Averett – our graduates, foundations, donors and friends – continue to help us pay our operating costs and provide student scholarships. l Increasing tuition annually by only 4% compared to the national average of 8% at most colleges and universities. l Keeping costs down – students’ costs at Averett are less than those of 80% of other private colleges in Virginia. l Consulting with families individually to maximize aid and set up workable payment options.

Averett University Athletics is committed to giving back to both the campus and surrounding Danville community. By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams, as well as individual student-athletes, are involved in numerous charity and community organizations and events. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects and activities in the community. Each year, the Averett volleyball team works together on selected community projects. In the past, the volleyball program has held clinics in conjunction with the Special Olympics of Danville. The Cougars also schedule an outreach get-together dinner with an area middle school volleyball team. In October, the volleyball team also designates a match as its “Dig Pink” game to support breast cancer awareness. The team wears pink accessories and raises money for breast cancer research. The volleyball team and, as a whole, Averett University team up with the rest of the schools in the USA South Conference for an annual food drive during the fall. Averett collected canned goods and non-perishable items and delivered them to God’s Storehouse in Danville just before Thanksgiving. Averett University donates nearly 2,000 canned goods as a part of the USA South’s Cans Across the Conference each year. Across the conference, approximately 25,000-30,000 cans and other items are collected by the league’s schools annually. The event was created by the members of the USA South Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in order to help those in need around the holiday season. Danny Miller HEAD COACH

The 2015 season marks the 21st year of Averett University volleyball under the guidance of Danny Miller. Since taking over the program at Averett, Miller has led the Cougars to a 504-239 record and four NCAA Tournament appearances. He has also won seven conference tournament titles and 10 regular season crowns, including the 2013 USA South Conference North Division championship. Miller has raised the bar in the USA South, while his teams have posted victories in nearly 70 percent of their contests. He ranks in the top-40 among active Division III coaches in career winning percentage at .678. That is a remarkable feat, considering he has done it against some of the top teams in the nation. In conference play, Miller’s resume is second to none. He has a career record of 245-49 against USA South opponents and has won more than 83 percent of his league games. In 2013, his team set a program single-season record with 17 conference wins. Averett went 27-9 (17-2 USA South) in

2013 while playing several of the nation’s top teams, winning the USA South North Division and advancing to the conference’s championship match. Despite losing five seniors from that team, Miller’s young 2014 squad finished 22-15 (15-4 USA South) while starting 4-5 freshmen in the lineup. He had two players earn American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Honors, with one of those players earning AVCA Region Freshman of the Year, USA South Rookie of the Year and Virginai Sports Information Directors (VaSID) State Rookie of the Year. Miller manages to put great teams on the court year in and year out. He wins with young squads and with veterans. Miller is Averett’s winningest coach and has been named the USA South Conference Coach of the Year seven times, as well as the Virginia State Coach of the Year on five occasions. He coached and recruited Averett’s three All-Americans in volleyball and has developed seven players who have combined for 13 conference player of the year awards. He has led the Cougars to at least

20 overall wins in 19 of his 20 seasons. Miller’s teams have also succeeded in the classroom. Since 2002-03, 73 Averett volleyball players have earned USA South Academic All-Conference Team honors. Numerous players have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District teams, and since 2011, Miller had three players who earned Academic All-America honors. On April 20, 2010, Miller became the ninth person inducted into the Cougar Club Sports Hall of Fame. Before his record-setting head coaching career began in 1995, Miller served as an assistant on the Averett staff from 199094 and was the school’s first sports information director until 2000. Miller, who serves as the university’s Associate Director of Athletics, served as the Interim Director of Athletics From September 2012 to July 2013. He holds both a bachelor’s (‘91) and master’s (‘95) degree from Averett. Miller resides in Danville with his daughters, McKenzie and Kayden.

Dr. Tiffany M. Franks Averett University President Dr. Tiffany McKillip Franks became the president of Averett University on July 1, 2008. Through her collaborative, high energy, interpersonal leadership style, Averett has embarked on an exciting voyage of change and growth. The University is a place where big dreams can become bold futures. The University is experiencing record new student enrollment, and is consistently ranked in the Top Tier of Regional Colleges in the South in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges guide. Averett also recently learned that it has been included among Princeton Review’s Best Regional Colleges, that it has been ranked one of Virginia’s top colleges for return on investment by Affordable Colleges Online, and that it has been named one of America’s most military-friendly schools by G.I. Jobs magazine for the fourth consecutive year. In addition, Colleges of Distinction recently announced that Averett has been named a 2013-2014 College of Distinction, “chosen for its continued commitment to the Four Distinctions: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Community, and Successful Outcomes.” With the first-hand knowledge she gained through conversations with constituents, Franks and her leadership team constructed a strategic plan and have embarked on the University’s first comprehensive capital campaign that will grow Averett to becoming a premier higher education leader in Southern Virginia. With more than 25 years of senior-level administrative experience in higher education that began when she was 23 as the dean of students, Franks’ leadership style and problem-solving expertise have led her through leadership roles in admissions, financial aid, student life, marketing and communications, public relations and fundraising. Before taking the helm at Averett, she served as the executive vice president at Greensboro College in North Carolina. Franks earned her BA from Ohio Dominican University; a master’s of science in education from The Ohio State University; and her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in higher education management. Franks sees Averett’s role as a community building one and she currently serves on the board of directors for the A.L. Philpott Manufacturing Extending Partnership, the Future of the Piedmont, the Danville Pittsylvania Chamber of Commerce, The Boys and Girls Club and the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. Franks is the pastchair of the Smart Beginnings Leadership Council of Danville Pittsylvania County and is a member of the Rotary Club of Danville and the Wednesday Club. She is married to Joe Franks, who recently retired as a long-time high school teacher and head men’s and women’s golf coach at Grimsley High School in Greensboro. Joe still serves as the assistant director of the North Carolina Coaches Association.

USA SOUTH CONFERENCE

2 COLOR, WHITE BG

1 COLOR, WHITE BG

One of the oldest Division III conferences in the nation, the USA South Conference was born as the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1963 when six institutions with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined as founding members. Those colleges were Charlotte College (now UNC-Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College (now Methodist University), North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Lynchburg College. The basis for the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, and thus no athletically awarded financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. That philosophy still exists today. In February 2003, it was announced that the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would change its name to the USA South Athletic Conference. The name change was made official on July 1, 2003, and the first USA South Athletic Conference championships were awarded in the fall of 2003. The Conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time, the NCAA divided into three legislative and competitive divisions, with Division III allowing membership for nonathletic scholarship institutions only. The Dixie joined the NCAA, and in so doing, became one of the first conferences accepted into Division III. Since the inception of Division III, the USA South has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding regional and national reputation in a number of sports. The Conference sponsored athletic programs for men only until 1981. In that year, the NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s sports, and the Dixie followed that lead by including women’s sports. The Conference now sponsors championships in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, golf and women’s lacrosse for a total of 14 sports. Presently, the Conference features 13 institutions, five in North Carolina, three in Georgia, three in Virginia, one in Alabama and one in Tennessee. Averett University, Covenant College, Ferrum College, Greensboro College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Mary Baldwin College, Maryville College, Meredith College, Piedmont College and William Peace University have joined Methodist and N.C. Wesleyan and make up today’s conference full-time membership. The USA South will welcome three new members in 2016-17 as Agnes Scott College, Salem College and Wesleyan College bring the total membership to 16 institutions.
