A Personal Tribute To Eileen M. Hickey

From Lucille P. Pattison, Former Dutchess County Executive ur friendship began in 1972. I was canvassing our Hyde Park road for George McGovern and soon learned how close to home was the Vietnam War. Eileen’s only brother, Nelson McKenna, had been the first U.S. Marine from Dutchess County killed in action. Although Eileen could have shut the door in my face, she invited me in to discuss U.S. policy in Southeast Asia. It was my first encounter with the searching mind of this beautiful young woman - it would not be the last. Our years together in the League of Women Voters guaranteed many such dialogues, she a Republican and I a Democrat. She went on to become president of the League; I went into politics. When her League activities permitted, she was a volunteer in my political campaigns, starting with my first race for the County Legislature in 1973 and subsequent elections as County Executive. In 1981, by then a registered Democrat, Eileen won a seat in the County Legislature and in 1994, was elected to the New York State Assembly. During that term, she also received her degree from Marist College. Eileen’s years in elected office were marked by her concern for her constituents. She set a standard for caring responses to all who expressed their concerns to her. Her appearance at any political or community function was greeted with genuine warmth by all regardless of their political affiliation or stand on an issue. Her devotion to community manifested itself in her activities in support of the Mid-Hudson Vietnam Veterans, the annual Earline Patrice Thanksgiving and Christmas Day Dinners, the Hyde Park School, and Eleanor Roosevelt’s Val-kill, among many others. Eileen loved people, all kinds. She had a warm place in her heart for everyone, and everyone loved Eileen. Her charm and optimism were infectious. Her generosity of spirit put many of us to shame. She found joy in helping her family; and this family encompassed nearly everyone whose life touched hers. The thousands who stood by her during her sickness and suffering and mourned her death reflected a depth of love rarely expressed to a private or public individual. We miss her now; we always will; our memory of Eileen will never fade.

At no time in the recent past have the Democratic Party and organized labor been in such harmony as both strive to realize common goals for the betterment of all during insecure and unpredictable times. While our economy suffers and political battles rage over what we hold to be basic human rights — a job, a living wage, an affordable house, quality health care, social justice, an education, clean air, fresh water and safe food — we pause to celebrate the working men and women who are the heart and spirit of this land. We remember the heroes of yesteryear who gave their lives to ensure that our workplaces are safe. We honor the leaders of today who work tirelessly on our behalf to see to it that the work environment is sound and the fruit of our labor is sweet. And we thank the organizers and activists among us. They are the ones who put their bodies where their words are and have a profound impact upon the political process that leads us to the future. New York State Governor David A. Paterson
avid A. Paterson broke new ground the moment he assumed office. He is New York State’s first African-American governor and only the fourth African-American governor of any state. And he is the first legally blind person ever to serve as governor in the U.S. Of course, some say it is the Governor’s ability to rise above politics and partisanship - and his talent for bringing together people of opposing viewpoints and party affiliations that is his truly groundbreaking achievement in Albany. Under his leadership, the state government has moved with atypical speed to address critical issues including the budget, property taxes and health care. How has he changed the culture of Albany? Some say it’s the governor’s force of will, some say he has a spine of steel, but being willing to negotiate belies the governor’s steely reserve. “Don’t confuse conciliation with weakness,” he counsels members of both parties. Governor Paterson made clear in his inaugural speech that civility would be a watchword of his administration, exhorting leaders from both political parties to “put personal politics, party advantage and power struggles aside, in favor of service, in the interests of the people. After a distinguished career in the state legislature, Governor Paterson entered office well prepared to lead. Prior to being elected lieutenant governor 2006, he had spent more than twenty years in the New York State Senate. In 2002 he became the Senate’s Democratic leader - another historic first for an African-American legislator. Determined to “Level with the Public” Governor Paterson has led the charge in the budget negotiations, vowing to continue to leveling with the public and expressing your most important values. Governor Paterson is nationally recognized as a leading advocate for the visually and physically impaired. Regarding his disability the governor says, “I have had this desire my whole life to prove people wrong, to show them I could do things they didn’t think I could do.” An avid sports fan, he enjoys playing basketball and completed the New York Marathon in 1999. A graduate of Columbia University and Hofstra Law School, Governor Paterson formerly served as an adjunct professor at Columbia’s School for International and Public Affairs.
Dear Friends, It is my great honor to have been invited to “Salute to Labor,” and it is my great pleasure to show my support and appreciation for the labor leaders whose tremendous contributions are being recognized here tonight. We have worked closely together to improve the lives of working families, but our work has just begun. Right now we are working on passing comprehensive health care reform to provide coverage for the 47 million Americans who are currently uninsured and ensuring affordable access to quality care for people who already have health insurance. Another legislative priority is the Employee Free Choice Act, which will level the playing field for America’s workers by ensuring a fair opportunity to choose to join a labor union. Every family deserves a living wage, a safe workplace, quality and affordable health care, access to education and job training, and economic security. These goals have always been at the heart of the labor movement, and the heart of what I am trying to do in Washington. Together, with a new Congress and Administration and a renewed focus on the middle class, we can get this country moving in the right direction again. Thank you so much for the opportunity to celebrate the work of organized labor and Assemblywoman Eileen Hickey. I look forward to continuing our work together to fight for hard working New Yorkers and rebuild a strong economy for the next generation.

Janice Williams-Myers Janice Williams-Myers has cultivated a life built upon promoting civil and economic rights. Her life experiences have ranged from work as a medical provider in Malawi helping to combat tuberculosis during her time in the Peace Corps in the 1960's, to math teacher in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and English instructor in Zambia. In the U.S. she joined activists at UCLA to demand the reinstatement of famed feminist and grassroots organizer Angela Davis. At Carlton College in Minnesota she and her husband Albert regularly talked politics and philosophy with Paul and Sheila Wellstone. Her activist/organizer career has brought her into the company of many other greats, including Saul Alinsky, Rosa Parks, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Thirty years ago Janice and her husband settled in New Paltz where Janice continued her political activism while she raised their two daughters. She was a two-term Vice Chair of the Ulster County Democratic Party, ran unsuccessfully for county legislature, and served as Co-Chair of the Ulster County Rainbow Coalition. She attended the 1988 Democratic Convention as a Delegate for Jesse Jackson. Janice also worked with other community leaders to bring justice after the death of Jimmy Lee Bruce Jr., a case many consider to be a defining civil rights struggle of the 1980's. Schooled in history, women's studies, and sociology, Janice found her real academic passion in public health coursework. When employed at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital she immediately became a local delegate for her union SEIU 1199, representing her colleagues and inspiring participation with the union's political program. After serving with distinction as a full-time “Member Political Organizer� during the Kerry/Edwards campaign for President in 2004, she was brought on as a permanent Political Organizer with 1199.
Pasquale Delli Carpini
Pasquale Delli Carpini was born in Italy and came to the United States with his family in 1971. He attended Fordham University (Bronx, New York) and completed graduate studies in New York University in 1983 and in Western Connecticut State University in 1993. At Cornell University he completed the Seventh Annual NYSUT/Cornell ILR Leadership Institute. Pasquale has been married for 27 years to his loving and supporting wife Maria. They have five children and have resided in Dutchess County since 1987. He began his career at Our Lady of Perpetual Help High School in Brooklyn, New York to 1983, and at Mount Saint Michael Academy, to 1987. He taught Italian at Fordham University to 1988. Having moved to Dutchess County in 1987, he was a Spanish instructor at Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, New York. Since 1989, he has taught in the Wappingers Central School District and presently teaches Italian at John Jay High School. Currently, he is also an adjunct professor of Italian at Marist College. As a member of the WCT Executive Board, Pasquale served as a Secondary at Large, Vice President for Negotiations and was elected President of the member local. In the past five years, along with the able leadership of the Union, he has worked tirelessly in protecting, preserving and improving members’ benefits. During his tenure as WCT President, he has formed strong coalitions with the school community to pass school budgets, elect positive school board candidates, and work with educators to develop worthwhile programs and curriculum to ensure the best possible education for the students of Wappingers. He also serves on numerous committees such as Pension and Retirement, Committee of 100, Dutchess Educational Health Insurance Consortium (DEHIC) and several others. Because of his dedication and passion to his chosen profession and community service, Pasquale has been the recipient of numerous awards. Most recently, he received the prestigious “Dante Alighieri Award” (2001) for his “unselfish dedication and his actions and deeds that have fostered an unprecedented understanding of the Italian language, culture and heritage.” In recognition of his steadfast commitment and outstanding contributions to the order Sons of Italy in American, he received the “Man of the Year” Award from the OSIA Joe DiMaggio Lodge #2248 in 2002. Pasquale is also recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
Lizabeth Piraino Lizabeth Piraino was born on Oct. 9, 1954. She is a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School and Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Ms. Piraino continued her studies through Cornell University in Labor Relations. In 1977, she started her public sector career with Dutchess County Social Services and still remains at the Department of Social Services as an Administrative Services Coordinator. Ms. Piraino is the President of the 2000 members of Dutchess County CSEA and is aggressive and politically active in her union. She was elected President in 1995 and has been re-elected most recently to her fifth term in July, 2009. Lizabeth was also re-elected to a third term as a member of the Local Government Division on the Board of Directors for CSEA, Inc. protecting the interests of union members in Local Government. Lizabeth is a key leader of labor movement and its political efforts in Dutchess County. Lizabeth is known for her commitment to labor, confronting Dutchess County’s leadership, and her powerful voice in the workplace protecting and improving the quality of life for employees. Lizabeth was successful in her attempts to stop the County Executive from opening our contract both in 1995 and most recently 2008. She commends the Democratic Leadership in the Legislature for protecting and honoring the employees contract. Through Lizabeth’s leadership, she has spearheaded several negotiation contracts and has been successful during economic times to maintain benefits and secure raises without reopening contracts and making concessions. Lizabeth has a daughter, Lesli-Ann, who also works in the public sector, and a grandson, Nicholas. The Piraino family are natives of Poughkeepsie.
Matthew Stoddard Matthew Stoddard has been the Business Manager and Recording Secretary of Ironworkers Local Union #417 in Newburgh, NY since April, 2007. He is married and lives in Walden with his wife, Erin and son, Matthew and stepdaughter, Emily. He is a Newburgh Free Academy alumni, immediately following graduation he was accepted into the Ironworkers Local 417 Apprentice Training Program. Matt has a very strong union loyalty and believes in what he does. He is an active member of the Hudson Valley Building Trades as well as the Rockland, Westchester and Putnam Building Trades. He is involved in the Central Labor Council for Dutchess County, the Upper Hudson and the Orange/Sullivan chapters. He is a member of three County Legislative Committees: Dutchess, Ulster and Sullivan and is working with Legislators in Dutchess County to secure a Project Labor Agreement countywide. He is also an active member of the Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation. He has worked on several PLA agreements for area jobs and served on various other labor committees. Prior to being selected to serve as Recording Secretary and Business Agent, Matt served on the Executive Board of his Local Union. Other Ironworker affiliations include serving as a Trustee on the Locals 40, 361, 417 Pension, Annuity and Health Joint Funds, a Delegate to Ironworkers International Convention. When he worked in the field before becoming a Business Agent, he ran several big jobs as a working Foreman and a General Foreman. Matt believes strongly in the Labor Movement, PLA’s and the use of local labor. His goal is to strengthen the standing of the Ironworkers Union, and all Local Labor in the Hudson Valley by educating himself, encouraging others to continue in their training to keep up with changes in their trade, and by being active in the community.
Jean Van Tassel
Jean Van Tassel is a registered nurse currently working in the Endoscopy Lab at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Jean has been a Wappingers Falls resident all of her life, having been born at Vassar Brothers Hospital. She received her nursing education at the Vassar Brothers School of Nursing and graduated in the Class of 1963. She has worked all of her 46 years of nursing at Vassar with 27 of them in the Emergency Department. Jean has been an active member of the New York State Nurses Association since it organized the nurses in 1982. Among her many leadership roles on behalf of her colleagues at Vassar she has served on the Nurse Practice Committee and has met with local politicians when needed during times of contract negotiations. Jean met her husband Stephen at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Stephen is a nurse currently working in the Same Day Surgery unit. and is a former recipient of the Eileen Hickey Award. Jean is the mother of three children, Kim Mackey, John Detweiler, and Michael Detweiler. Regarding this award Jean said, “I'm very proud to receive this award since I was fortunate to have been acquainted with Eileen Hickey. She was an exceptional woman committed to nursing, the community, and she was a terrific role model.�
Mike Salvia
Mike was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York; and after earning a Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude and completing his MBA at Mount Saint Mary College, he chose to remain in the Hudson Valley. Mike presently lives in Poughkeepsie with his wife and family. He started work as a Lineman in the Construction Department for New York Telephone Co. Right from the beginning Mike became a Union activist. In the years that followed, Mike became involved in many civic organizations and union activities. He fought for and won the continuation of union involvement with the Blood Bank after Verizon attempted to abolish all participation. Under Mike’s leadership Local 1120 spearheaded the successful arbitration which took several years. Many CWA members remain active today. He was instrumental in starting the Local 1120 Assistance Fund which was originally created to assist laid off members of Local 1120. Today it has grown into a benevolent fund for all members in need. When ever the Labor Movement needs help Mike is always there. In 2001 Mike was tapped to become a Business Agent, in 2004 Executive Vice President and in 2008 elected to the Presidency and presently holds that position. Mike was the first Officer of Local 1120 to come from western New York State. Mike served on numerous boards, including, the United Way, Occupational Safety and Health Committee, Dutchess County Legislature Labor Advisory Committee and is currently on the Executive Board as Treasurer of the Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation. Mike Salvia has long been on the forefront of Labor’s issues and has always fought for rights in the workplace. His advocacy won him the distinct honor to be chosen by the President of CWA for the select panel of CWA Committees, which are on the cutting edge of issues in the workplace. He has fought for worker’s rights in the Union and the workplace and has taken that fight to Washington, DC. Mike is proud to represent and bargain contracts for over 25 amalgamated units within Local 1120. He represents a diverse group from auto mechanics, telecommunications technicians and truck drivers to newspaper reporters, nurses and professionals at Vassar and Marist Colleges. He is politically active, a staunch advocate of universal healthcare and a defender of civil rights.

The Dutchess County Democratic Committee is proud to organize this opportunity to honor the hardworking men and women of the Hudson Valley's unions. Former DCDC Chair Eileen Hickey pioneered the first of these events, knowing that the Democratic Party owes a debt of gratitude to the crucial friendship of organized labor. As the party of the working class, Democrats recognize the critical role unions play in creating safe conditions, fair wages, and promoting economic growth in the region. Today we owe even more to union activism. Labor unions have placed themselves squarely in support of President Obama’s agenda to reform health care now. We all know that health care reform is the key to leading our economy to a brighter future. But conservative tea-baggers, are trying to stop reform – stop it with the most senseless, brutish tactics. Fortunately, the unions have gone into those town hall meetings to keep pressing for health care reform. Consider these headlines: • Fighting the GOP Mobs: Progressives, Labor Ramp Up Grassroots Response • SEIU Challenges Radical-Fringe to Participate in a Civil Dialogue about Health Care Reform • Unions To Take On Conservative Groups’ Health Care Town Halls Recently, union support of Scott Murphy helped this first-time candidate triumph in his congressional race against a GOP veteran, a stunning upset against the politics-as-usual vision of Albany Republicans. Moving forward, wewould do well to always keep in mind the invaluable contributions that organized labor has made to our country and to the Democratic Party. Over the years, unions have taken great risks to improve the lot of the working class in America, and have fought alongside us to elect progressive Democrats right here in Dutchess County. For that they deserve our gratitude and our support.
