PERFECT NUMBER DAAP CARES X UP AND UP CINCY CINCINNATI CHILDREN’S DOLLSKILL WORKPLACE KAIRA LOORO POETRY FOUNDATION CHAMPLIN ARCHITECTURE CO-OP

PERFECT NUMBER HYPOTHETICAL PROJECT Design Challenge: Inspired by perfect numbers campaign, women on pedestal. I wanted to expand upon women of pedestal to create a free standing outdoor pavilion that customers could feel comfortable experiencing during social distancing. The pavilion would exist in any outdoor space and provide a shopping experience as well as opportunity for a gallery showing. Independent Remote Work Summer 2020 Project Identity: Location: Los Angeles Client: Perfect Number LA Remote Project Skills Used: Revit Autodesk Rendering Adobe Suite

The materials of the project are plywood with an abstracted pattern to create depth, dark toned metal, white plaster, grass inspired curtains for the dressing rooms and an abstracted pattern to create a perforated wall between employees and customers.

The outer rings provide circulation for customers and employees that is distanced for safety it is also an opportunity for models to show clothing in a gallery setting. the materiality is neutral based on perfect number’s aesthetic and the push to return to nature through this pandemic.

Parti: The design is meant to feel like it is the beautiful view after a long hike. The customer would approach the design and order what they want to try on. The employees would bring out their pieces and put them on the racks for them to grab. They can use the fitting rooms to try on their pieces. In the event of a gallery event models could walk around the rings distanced from the crowd and each other. Each fitting room is a pedestal for women to try on their pieces; they can walk around the rings to get a feel for the clothes. During a gallery show the curtains could be removed for more direct view to the models and the audience could gather distanced from the event but still see an equal view. The employees would stay in the back of the pavilion and customers would order the clothes they want to try on. Then they come pick them in the center exchange pedestal. They would then try them on, and either purchase them online or return them to the center exchange pedestal.

DAAPCARES COLLAB UP AND UP CINCY Design Challenge: Up and Up Cincy partnered with DAAPCares to produce marketing materials for their event to raise money for Revolution Dance Theater. As the president of DAAPCares, I led the club through the design process of creating a branded social media page and website to host the event on. The theme of the event is “Flow and Glow and promotes wellness and movement as well as local EDM music artists. The goal of the event is provide a safe and virtual experience for students, and also raise as much money as possible for Revolution Dance Theater. The main form of proceeds for the event are merch sales, venmo donations and event RSVPs and clicks. FLOW AND GLOW MOVEMENT

The posters were created as part of a social media campaign to promote the event as well as raise money for Revolution Dance Theater. The DAAPCares member created merchandise to sell on Redbubble where all proceeds will go to Revolution Dance Theater.

The social media campaign used peaceful blue and purple tones to brand the event to promote wellness and healing. DAAPCares students came up with many creative ideas, like the Venmo Bingo.

DOLLSKILL WORKPLACE Design Challenge: How can a brand take their ideals into their workplace while creating an appealing place to work? During this school project an exploration of workplace trends, brand identity, and space planning was the design challenge. The existing space was a 700 SF ice cream shop in Cincinnati, OH that could be modified architecturally, but most designs were interior focused. Parti Concept: The major architectural change made to the space is the roof that wraps the building. The roof plays on the concept of solid and negative space while creating moody lighting. Dollskill is known for rebellious fashion and the lighting promotes their vision of confident clothing for women.

Existing Axon: The existing space is operating as an ice cream shop in metro Cincinnati, OH. The interior space is about 700 SF and one level. A covered exterior patio is also an important part of the building. Soft curves, glass box windows and linear lines are a major part of the existing design.

Long. Section: From left to right: first is the outdoor work lounge, a public place to clients and employees. Then the reception space and the conference room. After that is the work cafe where clients and employees can collaborate. After that is the photo studio and bathroom. Above is the workplace that overlooks the office.

Cross Section: This cross section shows the photo studio where marketing materials can be produced. To the right is the bathroom. Above is the workplace where the employees can work at desks or in drop in offices. The space is finished in patterns and colors inspired by the clothing brand and is a space designed to attract creative thinkers.

CINCINNATI CHILDREN’S Design Challenge: The idea is to create a space where people feel comfortable and taken care of. One of the main objectives was to create more spaces to rest and more private spaces for families to wait in while their children are being treated. I also wanted to update the family resource space to create a calm- space for people to take a pause or get work done. I also created a small work cafe area by the elevators so families could easily access it from the waiting room if they needed to quickly grab something to eat. The finishes are sophisticated patterns that are also whimsical and playful to appeal to all ages who are using the space. Warm wood tones and a cool terrazzo floor balance the playful colors. Education Project DAAP Interior Studio Spring 2020 Project Identity: Location: Cincinnati, Ohio Client: The community of Cincinnati Skills Used: Revit Autodesk Render Adobe Suite

Analysis: Site analysis was the first step to understand what the community needed from the space and how the space could be improved from its current function. The hospital is a very highly regarded space within the region so it was important to understand its significance to the space.

Family Resources: The family resources area is designed to give families a sophisticated place to work or relax during their children’s hospital stays. It provides private offices, pods and seating for families to have a range of options to feel comfortable and taken care of during a stressful time in their lives.

Work Cafe: The work cafe is on the first floor next to the elevator families would take to same day surgery. Since children can’t eat the day of surgery, the cafe is separated from them so they don’t have to feel like they’re missing out. It is the closest place parents can be without being in the waiting room.

Circulation: The circulation is based on the central point of the “C” elevators in the building. From the “C” elevator the circulation branches left and right on each floor to reach family resources, work cafe, waiting room and patient rooms. Even in the large campus, the patient could easily stay in the vertical area of the space.

First Floor: The first floor consists of the family resources, circulation and the work cafe. The first floor is primarily to be used by the families guest and less by the patients. An important point of the project was that families used the hospital as much, or even more, than the patients do.

Third Floor: The third floor consists of a waiting room, play area, check in and the patient rooms. This is the area where patients would spend most of their visit and it is a closed loop between check in and checkout.

KAIRA LOORO COMPETITION Design Challenge: How can architecture encourage healing? The country of Senegal has faced decades of violence and civil war. The people of the country feel divided and deeply wounded spiritually and physically. The competition called for a community center that could bring together prayer, art and education that would be accessible to all religions and backgrounds. Student Competition With Mileek Williams, 2019 Project Identity: Square Feet: 2,500 SF Location: Sedhiou, Casamance region, to the south of Senegal Client: The community of Sedhiou Skills Used: Rhino Revit Enscape Illustrator Photoshop

HAS EXPERIENCED ARMED CONFLICT WITHIN BORDERS HAS NOT EXPERIENCED ARMED CONFLICT WITHIN BORDERS

HAS ONLY FOUGHT OUTSIDE NATIONAL BORDERS HAS ALSO FOUGHT OUTSIDE NATIONAL BORDERS

Project Research: First world countries push wars outside their borders to developing countries who do not have the resources to heal their communities from wars. Shown in the maps, countries such as the United States, Australia and Italy have only fought in wars outside of their own borders in the past decade. The project location, Senegal, has only had armed conflict within their own border and has not participated in any wars outside their country in the past decade. These wars were civil wars and wars with others. The toll this takes on the community is incomprehensible.

GREEN ROOF

PEACE WATERFALL

CLAY WALLS

BAMBOO SCREENING

Parti: The Parti of the project was based on a layering system. The first layer is a bamboo wall system which provided protection from the strong sun. The next layer is clay walls with negative space that provide more ventilation but also privacy. The roof is a slanted green roof that allows water to travel down the inner waterfall but also allows for the community to grow vegetables and produce on the roof. It also absorbs rain water from the harsh rain season that happens every year. The inner waterfall provides water to the pavilion and creates a peaceful environment for the prayer space.

Gallery Space: Local artist will use this space to display artwork they create with the community. The raised platforms provide space for all sizes of sculptures and protect from weather. The walls allows for airflow and light to enter through to layers of slatted wall but also protects from the rain season.

Awareness Space: The community will gather in this space to learn and grow together. Performances can be put on in this space as well as classes. This is a space that encourages growth. The walls allow for airflow and light to enter through to layers of slatted wall but also protects from the rain season.

POETRY FOUNDATION Design Challenge: How can a project respond to the diverse needs of a community while being open for constant change. This project will be a place for art and creativity as well as education. The project focuses on views and connection to the surrounding community. A grand stair reaches all three levels of the building and as you walk down you have views to Washington Park and Music Hall to further tie to heritage into the space. Long. Section: The first level of the building greets the public and invites them further into the building. It also holds the employee offices. Traveling upward is the library and an outdoor space that faces to the park. The third floor is used for poetry reading and a cocktail area faces the park.

Cross Section: The building is centered around the connection to the community and the view to the park as showed in this section. The stair is faced toward a curtain wall that exposes views to the park and music hall. The stair also passes through the office so the community can see into the space.

TECHNOLOGY WORKPLACE Design Challenge: How can we make employees feel comfortable while giving them a fresh space that will last them years to come. These employees liked the privacy their standard cubicles provide but they longed for updated finishes and areas that they could collaborate in. The solution was to keep a private desking system embedded into a work cafe and touchdown spaces for collaborating. Ground Level Floor Plan: The project consisted of three floors connected by an atrium space. The project kept a traditional approach on private benching systems but added areas for collaboration and a work cafe. The renovation hoped to attract and retain employees through improved work conditions.

Furniture Narrative: The furniture should be collaborative and create touch down spaces for employees to work outside of their private workspaces. The workspace were kept traditional and not open because that’s how the employees felt most comfortable.

MARKETING WORKPLACE Design Challenge: Can a workplace attract fresh, new employees, and keep its current employees? The company wanted the interior fit-out to bring new talent to their company and improve the wellness and satisfaction of their current employees. The design concept brings local themes of the auto industry of Detroit, Michigan. A work cafe and collaboration areas give employees a more comfortable environment. Furniture Narrative: The furniture in the space is meant to be collaborative, fun and fresh. The company is trying to retain employees and wants to give them a fresh new look with amenities. The whole office focuses on collaboration and has pods for meeting as well as open office benching.

Lighting Re-purpose: The acrylic lighting pendants were left from the previous office space. The Revit families were modeled and materials were applied so they looked realistic and output light for rendering. It was best to use them in meeting rooms to brighten up the space.

SURFACEWORKS COMPETITION I entered the contest to design a table top for SurfaceWorks Penny Table. I drew a design based on a playful grid of yellow and black rectangles that varied in size. I won the contest along with 8 other tables that were all produced for NeoCon. I got to visit the table at the NeoCon showroom and then got to keep it. A few months later I got news that my table would be used in their brochure to sell more custom table top designs. The brochure that SurfaceWorks produced is shown on the right and my table is photographed on the left.
